Yelp
This boutique hotel, in a slightly peripheral district of Shimbashi, was recommended to us by a Japanese colleague so we knew it would be pretty good--but it exceeded our expectations. It's impeccable, quiet and very private in that you can take the elevator directly up to your room without even passing the front desk. But if you need assistance, front desk personnel are very helpful and conversant in English. The neighborhood is a bit seedy at night, with a lot of hostess clubs, but it's very subtle by western standards and totally safe. There's no aggressive behavior whatsoever and IMO it's a perfectly appropriate area for families. It's also an easy walk to Shimbashi Station and a 10-min walk to glossy Ginza.
I've seen a few comments that the rooms here are tiny--in our case, we sprung for a corner room with a king-sized bed (only about another $20 a night) and were surprised at how spacious it was. The bed is much bigger than an American king, plus there's a desk and a lovely little cushioned bench on which to lounge by the window.
The bathroom features a deep tub, excellent water pressure and a high tech TOTO toilet, which I won't detail here; suffice to say, it's reason enough to visit Japan. Other in-room amenities include a small fridge, toiletries, North American outlets, USB chargers, powerful AC, and a large screen TV. There's also an ice machine on every floor.
Breakfast buffet was good--not incredible--but a highly convenient option with both Western and Japanese foods. But the best part of this hotel is the Sky Spa, the rooftop onsen where you can quietly enjoy the indoor and outdoor hot tub and sauna after a day of walking around. Pretty incredible for the price! We would stay here over and over again. Fortunately, they have Candeo Hotels in a few different cities like Kyoto and Osaka.
