Google
Best hero's in the Bay Area. You will not be let down. Great ingredients fresh bread. if you know what a East coast sammich is supposed to taste like this place knocks it out of the park.

Michael

Google
By far and away the best lunch spot in Clayton, so long as you like great sandwiches. Massive and delicious without breaking the bank. Even the staff here is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, which as you can see, is extensive.

Brian Andre

Google
My usual spot when I’m feeling like a Sub… They have plenty of different sandwiches here to choose from.

Donny Bryant

Google
My co worker recommended this to me. This is my new favorite sandwich spot! Amazing choices and fresh sliced meats. A must try!!

John Freeman

Google
As you enter Clayton, between the Bocce Courts and Skipollini's, don't blink. Park, and see what's on the Daily Menu Board. No,you can't call or text or order online. As they say, Subway is around the corner!!! If you want a great big delicious sub....go here!!!! It's well worth it!!!

Ken Swenson

Google
The best sandwiches ever! Bread is soft, meat is tender, and the flavor is perfect. I don't eat out often but if I'm around Clayton this is where I'm eating.

Michael Moniz

Google
Meatball special is epic. Never had a bad sando there. Very filling.

Google

Yelp
Not a fan. Don't have Dutch crunch bread. Dont have avocado. Menu online is non existent so very low amount of sandwiches offered. The girl at the front who took our order is very rude. Check it out baby doll I didn't choose your job working at a sandwich spot, you did. So, if you can't give service with a smile go work somewhere else. I said have a nice day and you just respond with, "yeah." Like wtf. Then want to give attitude when I asked to have avocado on our sandwich. Like wtf is wrong with you. Anyways won't be back $66 for two adult sandwiches and 3 kids sandwiches and a rude ass attitude. I'm GOOD.

Yelp
This is a to-go only sandwich spot with a couple tables outside. The service was quick, the sandwiches were fresh, and it's an easy spot to grab lunch after hiking in Mt. Diablo. I liked the Bensonhurst sandwich.

Yelp
My kids and I love hitting up this place once a week. I have super picky eaters but they will gobble an entire turkey and cheese sandwich right up! The bread is delicious. Super fresh. Actually, I find all the ingredients they use to be really high quality and fresh. I love the turkey bacon sandwich and the meatball sandwich is superior. I go there typically around 11 and most of the time people are already forming a line to order. It's a small place so be patient. Good things take time and I'm pretty sure it's only John and another set of hands helping in the back. Hailey usually takes our order and she's super sweet. I've never had a problem with customer service there. I've read other reviews complaining about there not being an avocado option. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but it sounds silly. Maybe it's just me but you shouldn't expect a restaurant to have certain things. It's a Brooklyn sandwich shop. Avocado is such a California thing. I feel it's like going into an Italian restaurant and asking for ranch to dip your pizza in. Anyway, highly recommend this place.

Yelp
I'm a sandwich lover and I've lately been trying to hit up all the sandwich shops in the area. I found Canesa's Brooklyn Heros on Yelp and I decided to pay this place a visit a few weeks ago. I ordered a Cool Hand Luke which has Pastrami, Pepper Jack, Hot Cherry Peppers, and Deli Mustard. It was a pretty good sandwich. The gentlemen working there were nice too. They even threw in an extra sausage and peppers sandwich for me. Sweet of them. Great sandwich shop in the Clayton area!

Michael G.

Yelp
Had a meatball sandwich today. First time at this location. Absolutely delicious. Thr meatballs, sauce and bread were so tasty. Great customer service. Can't wait to go back again. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Food: delicious sandwiches. I was a bit worried about what type of bread they would use because my typically go-to for bread would be Dutch crunch and they didn't really ask me what kind of bread I wanted. And I was happy with the bread they used - very nice, soft and pillowy on the inside. I got their #6 Vinny's Stromboli and the combination of salami, ham and pepperoni was really nice, and the tomato salsa added the nice and needed freshness to the sandwich. I'd definitely get this again. Price: $15 per sandwich is a bit pricey, but the sandwich was delicious. Service: super friendly guy at the order counter. Service was pretty quick in general. They took the time to make the sandwiches but I see it as then putting love into what they're making. Ambiance: not a lot to say cause it's technically just a stand but there were some outdoor seating.

Yelp
I absolutely love eating at Canesa! The food is fantastic. Made just the way you like it! Never had a sandwich I havent liked. You can sit at one of the picnic tables and listen to good music and eat. John is awesome, always with a smile.

Yelp
Best tasting sub I've ever had! I was told from a coworker from New York, that Canesas has great subs in Cali. He said it reminds him of home so you know I had to try. It's this small shop with big flavor. I told the young lady to give me their best cold sub, she gave me Vinny's Stromboli? I think that's what it's called. It twas amaze balls!!! Wish I got her name, thank you so much for the fantastic tasting sub. It was huge well worth the money.

Mike D.

Yelp
I've had the BEST sandwich! Vinny's Stromboli is just flat out the best. The people working there are nice and very friendly..

K G.

Yelp
10/10 every time. Very good rolls. Toasty, quick and delicious! A must on a a Saturday afternoon!

Yelp
First time patron and I need to know where they get their bread! We ordered the Italian, the corn beef, and the meatball special. All three were so flavorful and super fresh! Couldn't choose between them, so we made sampler plates and ate all three at once. Absolutely delicious!! We will be back regularly, and I will try to find out where they get their bread. Best bread I've had in a long long time
google avatar

Yelp
First of all I've never had sandwiches this long before. Yes they are hero's but i still wasn't expecting it and the bread was delicious. I enjoyed the meat the best the sauce tasted very authentic like they put a lot of love in and we added spicy peppers and it had a punch! Can't wait to try more sandwiches from here. Next door there is a bocce ball court which i thought was fun too!

Wendy T.

Yelp
Service is poor and the owner is not nice. Yelled at people while waiting in line. Bad vibes before a meal is a case for indigestion. Don't care how good the sandwiches are.
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
Always uncomfortable here if you are a minority. Tomato salad is oily but pretty good. Otherwise I can get a good sandwich somewhere else without feeling like I'm being intimidated.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
Great food, awesome people and great environment! The bread is soft, chewy and the best around. I would suggest this to anyone looking for a tasty sandwich.
google avatar

Janette J.

Yelp
Their food is SO DAMN FRESH and GOOD. But that voice mail is shady. Hella mafia vibes, Lol. Stay safe ya'll!
google avatar

Eric J.

Yelp
This is our "go to" for the bests subs/sandwiches (I should probably say subs) in the Clayton Area. Canesas is the epitome of the Brooklyn hero. The bread used is flavorful and beyond compare. Ingredients are fresh and tasty. Canesas adds the flavor downtown Clayton needs at lunchtime. This is one of our favorite small businesses!

Yelp
Best spot to go when you're really hungry - sandwiches are huge and always delicious. I try to go whenever I'm in town.

Evan

Yelp
I really love their sandwiches and would definitely recommend coming here, only setback is that they are almost rarely open.
google avatar

Nikol P.

Yelp
I'm a sprouts and avocado kind of gal but Canesa's forever changed me. The bread, the meats, the cheeses the perfection of proportioning it all is an art. I love everything here. The owner's are fabulous and really just make this place everything it is.
google avatar

Yang S.

Yelp
Sandwiches are good, but service and vibe of this place is extremely unwelcoming...esp if you are a woman or POC.
google avatar

Hugo E.

Yelp
Final got a chance to try this place out since its like 5 min from my house. Ordered the Stromboli and Verrazano. Stromboli was excellent, red peppers, soft bread took it over the top The Verrazano was ok. Nothing special. Very safe sandwhich I am coming back to try everything else. You can see and taste the quality ingredients and care when it's made.

James S.

Yelp
Service was friendly and fast. I ordered the #7 - the only vegetarian option, unfortunately. The bread was great, but the sandwich was underwhelming. For a vegetarian sandwich, it was lacking filling - barely any marinated peppers and chopped lettuce which left the fresh mozzarella asking for some more friendly accompaniment. The predominant flavor was bread. Wanted to support local but afraid they're off my list for future sandwich options. Balsamic vinegar and romaine additions at home were of no help either; sad to say. Cool place to hang outside at picnic tables and enjoy your sandwich!

Yelp
Oh yeah Authentic delicious sandwiches with so much flavor. Your belly will thank you. Great hidden spot & good for walking. Great service, I recommend it.

Yelp
Maaaaan!!!!! This Dude just brought the true New York deli sandwich to California!!! This sandwich is fire. The owner made it just right! He didn't cut any corners! I've been to Katz's deli in New York! When I say Canesa's know's what they're doing. This dude knows how to make a sandwich! Maaan, if he keeps this up! No telling what he'll create new!

Yelp
I've been here a few times and started my review before covid and then went back recently to finish but many things changed, so here the break down: First change, All Hero's $15, kinda price for a small town shop, but they usually have a line so people are finding it worth it. For me at that price point, the sando has to be over the top good. I ordered #16 Italian Combo (ham, salami, prosciutto, provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, roasted peppers, pepper rings, garlic, oil and vinegar, salt, pepper, oregano) It was good, but not over the top good. If I return I would add mustard and may with no cheese. I removed the cheese, provolone is to strong and over powers the meat and veggies. I have a feeling they might not allow changes, they seem to run a tight ship. The bread was really good, long sub roll, chewy crust with a soft inside. The meat was good quality and all the veggies but wow factor was not there in the dressing. I assume they combine the garlic, oregano, oil, vinegar, salt and pepper to make the dressing and then squeeze bottle it over the veggies. The flavor was light, not bold. I couldn't taste the garlic or oregano, the vinegar came thought which was good, but again light. To make it over the top worth $15, the dressing needs to be better. Precovid visit notes.. They are not serving these salads but the guy mentioned that would be coming back. Anti pasto salad, good. Potatoe salad, good on the sweet side, kinda like Costco brand Macaroni salad, good, a little sweet, but not too bad. Traditional style #6 Vinni's Stromboli, toasted, pepperoni, Genoa salami, ham, provolone, roasted peppers and tomato salad. This seems to be there signature sandwich, which is very good, if I return I'll try this again #18 Buffalo Bill toasted turkey pepper jack blue cheese, ranch, cholula, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes red onion, It has some spicy heat, it was ok Cool Hand Luke, pastrami, pepper jack, hot cherry peppers, Russian dressing, deli mustard, toasted The breads was awesome, peppers are hot, maybe a little over powering, pastrami is Good quality, the rest good. I might try this one again

Yelp
If I could leave a NEGATIVE 5-Star review... I would They don't take calls so you can call to get it fixed, & several of us heard him him telling another customer when they questioned their order "that if you don't like it you can f**k-off and take your business elsewhere". Very sad.

Yelp
Very Mediocre sandwich for $16 or $17 when paying via credit card. Not a lot of meat, bread wasn't good, and the bacon in the sandwich seemed like the stuff you buy and microwave. There are many better options in the East Bay. 100% prefer Moruccis or Genova than a sandwich at Canessas. I would not recommend it.

Christy B.

Yelp
I guess if you want mayo, lettuce, tomatoes mustard you should ask very plain sandwich for $15.00.

Yelp
2 words, Vinny's Stromboli. Big love to Jon and the whole crew. Shop has been around for a minute, food still hits to this day. PS: Please bring back "the godfather".

Laura B.

Yelp
Seriously great sandwiches in the heart of downtown Clayton. It's hard for me to deviate from the Cool Hand Luke, my favorite. The other sandwiches look great, too!

Yelp
Best sandwiches in Clayton. I think they're closed on Monday. Only open from 11-2 I think. "Let's go Brandon" !

Rod M.

Yelp
Really great sandwich shop. Their hours are not long so you have to make sure to stop in when they are open. The Godfather sandwich is awesome. Their bread is really fresh and has good flavor. The staff is very friendly and give really great customer service. This is our "go-to" sandwich shop when we are in Clayton.

Bruce P.

Yelp
Went there once it was ok. Always a line and their hours are extremely limited. I go to Jersey Mikes for convenience and probably just as good.

Ted C.

Yelp
Delicious, delicious, delicious, delicious, delicious, delicious. You may wait a few minutes, but you're waiting for deliciousness. Our favorite is the Stromboli. Keep up the great work.!!

Michael B.

Yelp
Best sandwiches in town!! John and Rob are great. Prepare to wait a little for your sandwich. If you're in a hurry go around the corner to subway. If you are easily offended don't come here!! If you want a great sandwich in a relaxed environment this is your spot. Enjoy.

Stori M.

Yelp
Delicious the bread is always amazing and never disappoints. The sandwiches are always great and tasty you can't beat a delicious sandwich .

Yelp
Such a good sandwich! I'm a 36 year local to Concord, but had never been here. A few friends had recommended that we try it out, and we finally got the chance to. Their menu is limited, due to covid, but the limited options were great. I got a turkey, bacon and cheddar, and my husband got a bbq roast beef. Both sandwiches were absolutely delicious. Their bread is the perfect combo of soft, chewy, and holds the sandwich together nicely. The amount of mayo and mustard were right on, and the bbq sauce used wasn't too sweet or too spicy, it was just right. The two gentlemen working when we visited were kind and helpful. We really enjoyed our sandwiches, and we definitely plan on coming back!!
google avatar

Tabitha O.

Yelp
Amazing! Thats all. Just one word is all you need to describe this place. Sandwich is amazing. Service is amazing, location is amazing. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Kathy G.

Yelp
Need to go back! I'm from Stockton and miss going to Genova's for truly good sandwiches on real bread. Canesa's is truly classic and honest food that is utterly delicious. I love that the owners have found a business model that works for them -- have so many fresh ingredients, have a set time frame, and if you run out early -- so be it! You can't have fresh food that's been laying around for days folks. The reviews that criticize this aspect of the business don't get the difference and they never will - their loss, our gain. Guess it's time to get myself organized so I can make it down there when they open -- as I'm hungry :D
google avatar

Glen R.

Yelp
I love this small shop. It doesn't have every sandwich every day, but all of the subs are great. I like to go on the days when they have the meatball sandwich. Check Yelp for the hours that they are open. Great location with a park nearby and some picnic tables that kind of share space with skippolinis pizza

Ti G.

Yelp
Best freaking sandwiches anywhere! That the employees are funny as hell just adds to the fun and ambiance! If you want a fantastic sandwich mixed with spicy humor, go to Canesa's in Clayton!!
google avatar

Patrick R.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches in a laid back town. Loved the Stromboli. Bread is the best. We'll be back on meatball Parmesan day.

Matthew R.

Yelp
Used to be awesome now not so much they have their sandwiches only can't make your own ? NO BUENO! Tried Parma very good!,
google avatar

Ed B.

Yelp
Very delicious sandwiches and a good size too! Looking for a great sandwich place this is it.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
Talk about an unassuming hole in the wall establishment. The entire restaurant is maybe a few hundred square feet but man what they do in that square footage is pretty delicious. The environment is something out of a New York movie. The owner was funny and engaging with customers while making the sandwiches. Now let's get down to the food... I got the roast beef with bbq sauce and cheese. The roast beef was a perfect medium rare and had great flavor. There was just the right amount of bbq as to not overpower the meat. Definitely a place I will come back to when I am in town.
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
Great sandwich, great people working there. Best sandwiches in town. I was just on the east coast and I'd say these can compete, if not win. Tasty moist pastrami with that fresh bread is a combo made in heaven. Don't expect good service if you walk up with an attitude and expecting them to kiss your feet, traditional joint=traditional manners. Will be going back.

Maureen G.

Yelp
I got a sandwich there today. I ordered a pastrami. No Russian dressing, or 1000 Island dressing is offered. Just plain old mustard with a pickle and a couple of onion slices and Swiss cheese. The pastrami was so dry and overcooked. Very boring and awful. To top it off, I was almost done with 1/2 of the sandwich, and I found a hair in my sandwich. I threw the rest of it away. What a waste of $15.00! Never going back again.
