Caneta

We got here as they opened as a party of 5. After being told it was a little bit of a wait. We waited for over 2 hours to be seated, others were sat before us and my mother-in-law had to ask if they planned on seating us. We spent about an hour and a half at the table and the food was really good. We did have to ask for the side of sweet bread that came with our meal that they seemed to forget. The service was ok.

We came here given the high reviews and it was mentioned in a list of best restaurants on the island, but it is not worth the stop. The service was incredibly slow, and the food was alright at best. Except the bone marrow, which was fantastic. The limpets were very large and numerous but overcooked making them chewy. Overall this one can be skipped unless you are in the area and there are not other options

Had a wonderful lunch there today! Started with a delicious Bean Soup. Then moved on to main course - beef alcarta and a plate of assorted pork products. All were delicious and servings was plentiful. House wines were very good. Would highly recommend eating here!

This is a really busy and popular restaurant. If you're a group of four people or more I highly recommend making a reservation beforehand. We loved our lunch sitting outside in the beautiful garden. When ordering our food at the bar inside, the staff clearly communicated to us, that we had to fend for ourselves when sitting outside, because they only serve foor in the restaurant inside. So we had to set our own table and take our drinks outside by ourselves. We didn't mind though, because we could clearly see the restaurant was very busy. All tables were occupied and people were queueing to get in. When our food was ready, the waiter took our food to the first floor balcony and from there gave it to us. It was worth the hassle though, because the food was excellent. My squid was great and the beef my boyfriend ordered was equally as good. Highly recommended, but next time, we'll make sure to have reservations.

Waited 2 hours and saw a table seated before we arrived still waiting to be served. Reserved or not you will wait. Poor time management. I lived 6 years on the mainland and never waited this long for a table. After being served the owner picked up the slack and made sure all the tables were served including serving the table himself. It feels like a shift changed after 2pm. The food is great. Once this place handles the time management issues then this restaurant would be perfect. Not sure what caused the slowness before 2pm as things are moving now.

Waited 1.5 hours. The sausage was dried out like it had been sitting and the steak was like shoe leather. If you dont spend a lot you dont get very good service. They cater to their own. Go elsewhere! I would highly recommend Tasca Das Tias.

The best steak I've ever had in my life. Perfectly cooked and flavored. The marrow was incredible and the chickpea salad was delicious and light. Highly recommend!

When you arrive on the island and someone asks, "do you like beef"? You know they're going to recommend a good place to eat. This is what happened on our arrival and my friend was picking up his rental car. We were told this was the restaurant to eat at. After a day of sight seeing we arrived just as the restaurant was opening for the night. It's nice that they have a private parking lot on the side of the building because the front walkway is essentially the street. It's safe to walk on but I wouldn't suggest stumbling. We were a party of four adventurous eaters so the menu was right up our alley. After a quick perusal of the offerings and a suggestion from our server we ended up getting all the starters (bread, butter, smoked sausage, & cheese), the Azorean dish (essentially a meat platter), the pork head stew, the regional stew and the meat plate (a cutting board full of steaks). Our server made sure we didn't over order, because we were prepared to order more. The starters came quickly. The cheese is a soft fresh cheese and it is accompanied by a pepper topping which pairs perfectly. Smear it on the bread and you're in luck. If you're smart save some of the cheese and pepper topping and serve it with the regional stew and fries and you won't regret holding on to it. The smoked sausage was a beef sausage and was smoked before it was finished with a hard sear because the outside had a terrific crispy texture while the inside had great smoke ring and a contrasting softer juicy center. We were served the Azorean plate as part of our starters (which has pork ribs, black pudding, pork sausage).

Ambiance, food and service was great! Probably one of our favorites stops while in Terceira. We tried all the appetizers...beef marrow was absolutely delicious. Should have ordered 2 for a party of 7. Alcatra for 2 was perfect amount and massa was delicious as well. Don't recall all of the other dishes we ordered but it was all great. Loved the tradition decor.

The Ambiance was great, the food was as good as most people mentioned. The service was outstanding.

Best restaurant on the island. The highlight of our trip to the Azores. We enjoyed a fantastic early steak dinner after a morning swimming in Biscoitos. We were a big party but the portions were more than enough to satisfy everyone. The restaurant itself was also a great spot with beautiful decor and a really nice courtyard. Highly recommend.

Nice interior and friendly service. I had a rib eye steak which was well done (ordered medium) and very over salted. My husband had some fish, also very salty and with a seasoning that was not very good. We couldn't place what it was.

Awesome place to eat only negative is they need to be open in the evening. Everything is great to eat and the ambiance is lovely!

We picked this restaurant for lunch after our drive up the Serra Santa Barbara yesterday. Really great atmosphere here and looks like it's pretty much a local favorite with large family gatherings. Menu has a lot to offer. Started with their version of lapas, which was delicious. 1 of the best so far. Wife had the whole grilled red snapper, Daughter had the squid and shrimp skewers and I ordered the Caneta steak. This restaurant had a more rounded flavor profiles than most of the others on the island. My steak was tasty but still a little tough. It was a bone in sirloin, I've saw pics of the same dish with bone in rib eye steak. Did I say it was very tasty? Which is hard to find in most the restaurants on the island, usually just salty. Waiters were very attentive and and very informative. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Delicious but limiting. If you're a non beef or pork eater like myself, you'll not find much on the menu here. I've resigned myself to this in much of the Azores but at most places I'm still able to slap together a more than decent meal. Here it was a struggle. Even the fish alcatra, which was the whole reason I came here in the first place, turned out to have beef in it. That being said, what we DID order was really good! The grilled shrimp were outrageous. The lapas was good, but I still think Ponta do Garajau in Sao Miguel had the best version that we tried. The grounds and the restaurant were super lovely, and I'm sure it would be a great dinner place, but as a late lunch grab it was scant. It was situated in the town over from the Biscoitos swimming pools, so it's a nice thing to do afterwards while you're exploring the North of Terceira.

Happy to be able to make it back to Restaurante Caneta! Five years ago it was a fabulous dinner in their beautiful dining room upstairs. Today it's lunch downstairs in what they call a snack bar - but still decked out in beautiful woods and wonderful food! I'm glad I've been following Restaurante Caneta online because we were able to ask for off menu items they are testing (shhhh!). Any trip I make to Terceira will always include a meal here!

Glad that this place was recommended to us and worth the drive. Food was really good. Almost all of it was made and prepared in house. Blood sausage and linguisa was spectacular.

Came here on the first night on the island through a friends recommendation. It is quite a few minutes drive from Praia or from the airport; although it takes awhile to get there, the drive is nice and the food experience is great! The most popular dish here is the skewered steak meat. They hang it on a hanging rack and they add garlic butter as they serve it hanging vertically. The meat is juicy, tender and tastes fresh as if they just butchered it. The island has lots of cows which is their primary source of food and you get that here. I also had grilled cod fish dish called bacalao and it also tasted fresh. Seafood is another source food on the island and this restaurant definitely give you that freshness with this dish. The staffs here are friendly and it seems like they are all family members. The young man that served us was funny and the rest of the staff were very helpful as well. The ambience is really nice, quite and comfortable. The decor and wooden furnishings and interior structure are beautiful. Overall, I would highly recommend this place. They made a big impression with me on my first day on the island and I hope provide it to you as well.

This was my absolute favorite resturant in Portugal. The resturant has such a beautiful feeling when entering. Its calm and quiet. The house wine was delicious.From our soups to our main meals, everything was full of flavor. Out server was friendly and engaged in conversation.

We have been to many very good restaurants on this trip. We had dinner w a local guide and he asked where we had been and when we did not say Caneta, he told us we must go there "tomorrow". He eats at this restaurant every day! He wrote everything we should try so I will do the same (our waiter, Marcel said he knew what Juka would want us to have). The local cheese with homemade spicy sauce. The homemade sweet and spicy sausage. We will never be able to eat regular sausage again. So amazing with just the right amount of sweet, spicy and grilled flavor. Beef if the day- this is essentially a grilled T-none but somehow of all the beef I ate on this island, this was the best. So tender and full of flavor. Pot roast w sweet bread. This classic dish was great. Serving it over the bread made a huge difference. We paired this w the vino tinto from Pico, another local island. It was the perfect compliment. Finally for desert we had the sweet vinegar. Forget the vinegar part, it tastes nothing like that. It is a very sweet, lemony custard. One can be shared by a couple. All of this plus a second bottle of wine and cofffee for around 70€. You must go!

Excellent! Our guide took us here for lunch between our caving exhibitions. The traditional beef stew over sweet bread was outstanding! Loved the environment and highly recommend.

We came here on the second to last day of our trip, and it was probably the best meal of the whole week. Definitely gotta start with the blood sausage and homemade smoked sausage. We got the traditional pot roast for 2, and the beef was so tender. Paired perfectly with the sweet bread that comes with it. Beautiful, relaxed ambiance and scenic drive up.

The food at Caneta is delicious. Tonight was my 4th visit here and they were a little off their game, but it was still very good. The espetada is amazing and the Bife à casa is quite a sight. Think massive amounts of steak. Mmmmm.

Divine is the only way to describe this place. Beautiful restaurant, excellent food and attentive service. The squid appetizer is incredible! We had the steak skewers and the traditional stew. Just excellent example of the Azores would highly recommend.

If I could give it more stars I would. The Azores is not known for its beef, but the pot roast and beef kabobs here are better than anywhere I've been in the U.S. The squid is so fresh and buttery you can taste the ocean. I can't say enough good about Caneta. If you don't a visit here you are missing out. The service is a little slow, so you can't be rushed. Make reservations or you will wait to be seated. WELL WORTH IT!!
