We spent one week at Canfranc Royal Hideaway and, unfortunately, the experience was very disappointing.
On the positive side, the property itself is beautiful and the rooms are spacious and elegant, consistent with what you would expect from a five-star hotel. It was also a very nice gesture to leave a present for all the kids during Three Kings day.
However, the service falls far below that standard. The staff was overall rude and unwelcoming. Basic hospitality was missing: staff members rarely greeted us when we entered a room or crossed them on the property. One particularly unpleasant experience occurred at breakfast with a cook who did not respond to my greetings for two days; when I finally commented on it, he replied with a sigh. The following day, there was again no greeting. This behavior was shocking for a hotel of this category.
Food at the café was overpriced for the quality (almost all the menu was sandwiches), poorly adapted to the season (for example, serving salmorejo in winter), and portion sizes were inconsistent from one night to another.
We stayed in a duplex suite, where the heating system did not work properly, fluctuating between hot and cold within minutes. When we reported the issue, we were told that since it had not happened before, everything was supposedly fine—leaving us feeling dismissed and unheard (and gifting a Christmas tree decoration probably was not the most accurate solution for the issue).
And this is only the highlight of the many incidences we had during the week.
Overall, while the building itself may deserve five stars, the service quality is very poor and completely undermines the experience. I have never felt so uncomfortable in a hotel and was actually looking forward to going back home. We will not return and cannot recommend this hotel. Very poor value for money.
