Cannua was absolutely incredible from the day we booked to the (sad) day we departed. Service was top notch and the food was amazing. A few days before arrival, I messaged the hotel on WhatsApp and asked for assistance booking a ride from our hotel in Medellin to Cannua. They quickly replied and took care of the arrangements. The ride took about an hour and 15 mins. The last bit of the ride was a bit bumpy, but unavoidable to get to the beautiful mountainside location. ||Reception|Walking in, the initial view of the valley is breathtaking. I can only compare it to seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time. We were greeted with some incredible passion fruit and white wine welcome drinks, and sat out on the terrace, taking in the view while they took our passports and checked us in. ||The Cabin|The initial reveal was slightly underwhelming because all the shades were closed, but as soon as we opened them up, OH MY GOD. We had a view of the entire valley, exactly like what we saw from the terrace at check-in, we saw from our bed. It was incredible. ||Downstairs, we had a sitting area with a pull-out bed, clothing storage with shelves and plenty of hangers, and a bathroom with a large shower. The water pressure was excellent, and the hot water was consistent and always available. There was also a mini fridge with some beer, wine, water, and snacks, along with a kettle, French press, and coffee. Upstairs was a very comfortable bed and a desk where we were able to work and take calls while looking out the windows. Excellent Wifi from all over the property. ||PRO TIP: Sleep with the shades open and wake up with sunrise to see the clouds burn off, revealing the valley below. ||EXPERT TIP: Only open the shades at night after you've turned off all the lights inside. ||The Food|The food was delicious and made with intention. They used produce grown by them or from other local sources, and added edible flowers and other touches that made each plate unique. The servers (Sebastian and Fabs) explained each dish, where things came from, why things were paired, and how we should try them to experience different tastes. My favorite was the coconut cream corn. It’s 100% not what you think it is, and it’s amazing. ||The first night, I asked for the bill, and they said, “No sir, it’s all automatically billed to your room.” It felt like staying at an all inclusive. And it was all VERY reasonably priced. (Like, all the food and drinks for two people over 4 days only cost maybe $200)||The Experiences|We didn’t plan ahead for things to do while we were there, so we ended up with a slightly less than ideal schedule, but it wasn't a big deal. We just had to do a hike on our own and a coffee tasting at 4:30 in the afternoon. ||Coffee and Chocolate Tasting: This was an awesome experience led by Fabs, who was super knowledgeable about both subjects. He explained a lot about how the coffee was grown and the process, and then brewed the same coffee three different ways, so we could experience the differences that different brew styles produced. It was crazy to experience. Same with the chocolate. If you are interested in either, I highly recommend doing this experience. ||Day trip to Guatape: We asked the hotel if they could hire a driver to bring us to La Piedra. For $120, we had a private driver who drove us not only to La Piedra to climb the steps, but also stopped at a Llama farm where you can pay $2 and feed the Llamas and other animals. It was an awesome surprise. The steps took us about 25 mins to climb and were definitely worth it. The views are incredible. Once we got down, we continued on to Guatape to get a late lunch and check out the city before heading back to the hotel.||The Coffee Farm: This was an awesome experience, and I definitely suggest you ask to do this if you're into coffee. We went to Finca La Rivera and got a tour by the owner, Miller, who explained the growing process and let us taste the coffee berries. He then strapped us up, and we went out to the field and picked some coffee! After about 5 mins we were tired and he fired us as coffee pickers. He showed us the rest of the process of fermenting, drying, roasting, and bagging. Then we had some coffee and enjoyed a really unique view of La Piedra. Can’t recommend this excursion enough. ||Permaculture Tour: Fabs led the permaculture tour as well (a true jack of all trades) and gave us a thorough background and history about the hotel and its construction. Really detailed and in-depth. We had to cut it short due to our departure time, but he was kind enough to give us an abbreviated tour of one of the gardens and the flowers. One flower tastes EXACTLY like a mushroom. It was so interesting.||Overall, Cannua has been one of the top hotel experiences of my life so far. The food, the service, and the property were all amazing. It opened my eyes to see a different side of Colombia that you don’t see by staying in the cities. ||Visitor recommendations|- Bring a small flashlight for each person. They give you a big honky one at check-in, but I brought a small pocket one that was way brighter and easier to carry. |- Bugs were not a big deal, but if you’re sensitive, bring some bug spray. |- Keep shades closed at night to keep the bugs out. |- Grab a walking stick to knock down cobwebs on the walk back after dinner and for the morning walk to breakfast. ||Hotel recommendations|- Pre-open the room shades before bringing the guests to the rooms. It makes the entrance more “WOW” and less “where’s the light switch?”|- I understand what happened with the pool, but add a hot tub or some kind some small soaking pool or something. Just someplace to cool off after a hike would be nice.|- Keep up the amazing work!
