The Canopy by Hilton Zagreb made a good base for a sightseeing/family get together trip to Zagreb. It is in between the main bus and train stations, a ten-minute walk to either. The main square and shopping district is a 15–20-minute stroll, the upper town a 20–25 minute walk. There is a small supermarket and pharmacy next door and restaurants in the neighbourhood. There is parking under the hotel. Check in seemed busy when we arrived and was friendly but slow, it took about ten minutes to find the reservation, have the passports scanned, give information and give us our room cards. The receptionist seemed new but was not getting much help from her colleagues. The experience at check in was bittersweet in other ways, the good was that we were upgraded as we are Hilton Honors members, the downside is that the Canopy by Hilton took a 200 Euro deposit from us for our four-night stay so we could ‘charge things to the room’. We charged one round of drinks against the room and two days after checking out we are still waiting for the balance to be refunded, which frankly is very cheeky. It’s not their money. We were also given no paperwork assuring us of this, just told an email will be sent.|Our room was large and comfortable with a large clothes rail with lots of hangers, room for luggage and drawers, a desk, safe, kettle and coffee machine, slippers but no robes, a full-length mirror, iron and board, hairdryer, lots of lights and sockets and complimentary Wi-Fi if you are an Honors member. The bathroom was a good size with shower, sink, vanity and main mirrors and shelving but the extractor fan was lamentable, so it was steamy every time we washed. There are ice and water stations on two floors. Housekeeping was very good except they failed for two days to replace used face cloths. Otherwise, it was great, the room was clean and in very good condition. |The service in the bar is good with a good selection of wines and beer, but a lot of the beer advertised was not in stock when we were there which was disappointing. The lift/elevator to the right as you face them is infuriating. If you get on at the upper floors, say 5th or 6th floors, and you want the Lobby on 0, the lift takes you all the way to -4 and then brings you back up which takes time and means you must wait longer. The doors also take three or four goes to close unless you press the lift closed button down. It does the same even if you want to visit the floor below. The stairs seem to have some sort of security pad on them so if you take them the only floor you can emerge at is the Lobby. Engineers were looking at the misfiring lift when we were staying but they certainly did not fix it. The left-hand lift is fine. Breakfast has an extensive range of hot and cold dishes, everything from bread, pastries, cereal, eggs, bacon, fruit and vegetables, cheese, meats, salad and yoghurt. The quality is a little bland but there are a lot of options. Service is good, there are flasks of filter coffee on the tables which were usually on the cold side, but you can request a cappuccino, fresh filter coffee or hot water for tea. The same breakfast area by the Lobby serves as a place to get dinner |Overall, bar waiting for our deposit back and the issues mentioned with the lift our stay was good and just the base we wanted to explore the city.
