I've been going there for 3 years now for the convenience.....but most of the time I'm treated with distain and it's by the people who's skin is the same tone as mine.....today I decided that I wasn't going to go in if one of the people of color was working the register....but had a curve ball thrown at me by the male security guard who asked me if I was in there a few days ago wearing a white hat....I became instantly upset and said let's go check the camera.....he obviously declined. I asked what was the deal with the black employees hating their own and decided to leave......but I discarded my pride and went and got what I needed.... however.....will not go back.....Rouses and Winn Dixie are just down the street

I had a great experience, Jacob from the deli section helped me out! He made me a box of cold cut sandwiches in 10 min and he did it with a smile! I will definitely be back thanks to his awesome customer service!

Google
Consistently friendly and knowledgeable staff guide you through finding what you're looking for rather than having to wander around like you do at the big box retailers. This family-owned retailer treats every customer like their family! I've been here numerous times and never been disappointed about the quality of products on the shelves and the very reasonable prices. If you have never been to one of their locations I strongly suggest you try it out to understand just how amazing a grocery store can be.

I go here for convenience because it is close to my house. I do not like the idea of dropping your bags on the floor before you enter. I mean, there are cameras everywhere and there is security and yet you have to drop your bags on the dirty floor and pick it up when you are about to leave. If it’s your first time there, you won’t know because there is no sign that tells you that. So as you enter, someone might give you the rude awakening as if you were plotting to steal in the first place. Put up a sign!!

Oh my gosh! Loved this little shop! In a great neighborhood. Good prices and quality products.

Awesome place to visit and shop. Employees are friendly and the sale items can't be beaten. The food bar is awesome.

Canseco's Esplanade lacks proper accommodation for bikers (or anyone who can't store their belongings in a car). On two occasions, I've been directed to leave my bike bags at the front entrance upon entering. As a biker, I don't have the option to store my belongings in a vehicle, and I'm uncomfortable leaving my valuables. I reached out to management via email several months ago to address this issue, but unfortunately received no response. Furthermore, I've noticed a discrepancy in the quality of produce compared to other grocery stores in the neighborhood and local farmer's markets. I believe addressing these concerns would greatly enhance the experience for bikers and anyone else without a car.

I love the uptown and gentilly location, but I bought some rotten pork loin from here and when I called management the manager asked for my receipt. I told him I could show him the transaction on my bank statement to prove I was just there and all he said was he was going check the rest of the supply still for sell. So I just lost out on my money for two packages of sour loins. I still love the store, but will not shop on esplanade. Very disappointed.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood store. Well stocked. Clean and orderly. friendly staff. Little pricey on some items and others very competitive! Well pleased. Parking can be an issue

Yelp
I give a one star review because the cashiers are rude, unfriendly, and will NOT empty your basket. The literally stand there and look at you, sometimes on their phone, and say "would you empty your basket." They do not smile or say hello, thank you or have a nice day, even if you say hello and greet them nicely and say have a nice day. I am the CUSTOMER. I went in on Wednesday after 5 and the cashier told me to empty the basket she also told me where to return the basket! In fact, if they had emptied the basket to make it more efficient for everyone, I would have immediately returned the basket. I will try one more time at this store, and I go at least 3 times a week. Be warned, the next time they tell me to empty my basket, I will dump it on the counter and walk out the door. The other great qualities of this store are ruined by the cashiers. Management needs to train them or replace them.

Yelp
For the most part this is a fantastic store and great for the neighborhood. Since the remodel it is laid out, the stock is generally full, the produce section is terrific. The store is spotless and the customer service at the deli is great. The only reason I put 3 stars and not 5 is the customer service at checkout. I find them rude and not helpful. What's up with please empty your basket it will help me? I'm sorry, I don't work out at Canseco's and how much effort is it to reach in a basket and scan items? I may as well go to a bigger grocery store and use self-check out. There is absolutely no reason for this. Yesterday, the cashier would not even move the basket closer (I had other bags in my hands) and glared at me and said please move it closer. On top of that I did not realize where the bags were with items and she raised her voice at me and said they are right there, take both. All the while she was texting on her phone. This is terrible customer service. The front end staff need a lot of training on customer service and no texting while working. I can easily go to Winn Dixie and use self checkout, but I prefer local grocers like Cansecos. With some improvements at the front this store would surely receive 5 stars from me. Having a great grocer like this in the neighborhood is what makes it a neighborhood.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick grocery run when I was in the neighborhood. There is a lot in this small space! I bought some fruit, some snacks and some of the prepared foods. Staff was helpful. Food was tasty. And shelves were stocked. Love a local market!

Yelp
My sister and I have been here many times and usually our experience is just fine. However, we visited yesterday and had a terrible experience. We both checked out separately with different cashiers and purchased about 8 total items. My sister finished before me and had purchased multiple items and a case of water. I went to another cashier, and I purchased some cherries only and then took all of her bags so she could grab the case of water. We left the store and as we're loading the car, the security guard, who was sitting at the door when we left and didn't stop or ask us ANYTHING, rushed out asking us if we stole the water and asking for a receipt. My sister told him she paid but wasn't given a receipt. He argued back and forth with us until one of the other cashiers (a black woman) had to rush out saying we had paid. We left upset because we were in a rush but called back to report the incident and the manager, Jackie, was rude, condescending, and racist and frankly not helpful. We pointed out that if it's the policy to check receipts for non bagged items, receipts should not be optional but automatically given. Also, we said it looks and feels terrible for two young black women to be wrongfully chased down by security and accused of stealing anything, but especially a pack of water they're basically struggling to carry, in a majority white neighborhood/community. She said she would talk to the security only but since he was a black man that the situation was not about race but about him not checking receipts. We pointed out that the cashier who told him that we did not pay was a new white male and that was the problem. There were 3 cashiers up there and we checked out with 2 separate cashiers and had multiple bags so why is the assumption from one cashier that we stole a water ok?! She also said she was from Africa (South African probably given her English accent) and therefore could not be racist. I asked to speak with the owners because we've been loyal customers to all of the Canseco's in the city over many years and have NEVER had an issue like this. Jackie wouldn't give me any information on how to contact them except for "they're here sometimes". My sister and I are honestly deeply disturbed by this experience and will not shop here again and tell every we know to do the same.

Yelp
Quality grocery experience!! I was extremely disgruntled once I learned the owner of Rouses grocery was a flaming Trumpy:( lucky for me Canseco's was always better anyways. Always a pleasant experience walking by and the scent of the fresh hot plates luring in faithful customers such as myself. Delightful encounters with employees, I always leave with a lasting sense of fulfillment reassured I have restored my love for humanity through my local bodega.

Yelp
The best cansecos in New Orleans! I bought some broccoli and cheese casserole and mixed veggies as sides for my steak. Everything was delicious and the cashiers are really nice, I also love the layout of this little store. I will definitely be returning!

Yelp
I like Conseco's for a neighborhood grocery, but it Rev's to be pricey. I did find some things that I wanted (think cheese, wine, bread) and overall I was happy with it. But honestly, if I lived in Nola it would only be where I'd go if I was über busy and needed milk or bread or the like. Think prices of WF.

Yelp
Nice little local market with lots of groceries! The wine selection was amazing! I really wanted to try some of the sliced cakes, but I don't want to undo all the calories burned on our epic bike ride today! Lots of fresh veggies and meats/seafood. Very convenient If you're in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Honestly I enjoy this little grocery/food GEM! Very good as it relates to getting items that you may not be able to obtain in a Walmart or other chain establishment. You have alcohol at a good affordable price (the options are pretty unique. Your usual bread/protein/endless soda/water options/fruit/etc. What I absolutely adore is their cooked food section. I probably come and get the roast beef and shrimp (surf and turf) like every Tuesday or Wednesday. The food is really good to say this is a grocery store. The staff is always pleasant and ready to assist with whatever needs you may have. Sometimes if an item is out of stock they are even knowledgeable about what other market may carry the brain or something similar to it. Overall you really just cant go wrong!

Yelp
My favorite grocery in the city! Great location and great specials - I just purchased two packs of local oysters that I'm guessing were super high in demand. Love their wine selection and the fact that they have my favorite brand of oat milk. Their prepared food items are so worth it. They keep it fresh and switch it up and there's always going to be something for every taste. I'm a regular.

Yelp
Finding a place to park was the only problem. Other than that, the place is a small gem in the neighborhood. I love this little store.

Yelp
I am a regular customer at Canseco's on Esplanade and usually am satisfied with their store but on January 30th I called to tell them that a gallon bottle of milk dated January 9th was beginning to spoil. The person who answered the phone told me to bring it in and a manager would be glad to switch it out. When I got there, the assistant manager, Walter, refused to change out the milk because 3/4 of the bottle was gone. Well, of course because it was still good prior to January 30th! He suggested I come back in 1/2 hour and take it up with the manager. This I could not do so, after a heated argument at the front of the store, I left the bottle with him and went across the street to Terranova's where they are always accommodating. I'm sure the distributor would have credited the store and they would have lost nothing but even if that did not happen, I think that is poor customer service.

Yelp
Good solid, community minded folks. Real neighborhood vibes. Beats biggest chains any day of the week

Yelp
The best little Cuban store in New Orleans. Your only going here for Cuban food which is delish. Get the cuban sandwich which is real with the real cheese the real roasted pork and ham with mustard and pickles on real latin style bread. Hot and cheesy it is a delicacy when done right. Then go to the chips isle and get a bag of fried plantains and you will never want chips again. For dessert get the tres leche cake if they have it, it sells fast. Then you will have a real Cuban meal right here in NOLA.

Yelp
I'm thankful for Canseco's. It's a little market, reminiscent of a bodega, nestled among restaurants and coffee shops on Esplanade. My local friends, my dude, and I stopped by between brunch and the Bacchus parade for snacks and beverages. Everything we were after was easy to find and reasonably priced. The young woman at the register was friendly and efficient. I returned a few days later to pick up some beer as a parting gift for my friends that live a few blocks away. It was a quick trip, as I knew exactly what I was there for. While I was waiting in line, I picked up the most adorable trinket pouch made from a map of New Orleans. It was an easy choice to toss it onto the conveyor belt. The same young woman was working the register from my first trip a few days earlier. An elderly male customer was giving her a hard time over something silly and she didn't back down. By the time it was my turn, she was right back to her pleasant self and we joked how not all customers can be winners. It's this kind of authenticity that makes me adore New Orleans and small businesses like this one. I imagine Canseco's isn't a one-stop-shop for all your necessities, but it served me well during my trip and I'd happily recommend it to anyone else in the area.

Yelp
I called to see if they were open on July 4. The person that answered the phone scoffed. I went to Rouse's instead.

Yelp
This is my convenient store. When I forgot to get an ingredient and I am in the middle of cooking, or if I want to get some beer, or wine, or liquor and don't wanna get in the car and drive, I can walk here and get what I need. The produce is kind of weak, but the staff is always nice and if I don't feel like cooking they have a pretty decent hot food selection, and sushi, too.

Yelp
Ok, I took off a store only because it's a bit pricey but hey, they gotta survive! One of my friends lives nearby and we exercise on Sundays and make Sunday lunch after church. So if we're missing ingredients or anything I usually pop in to grab a salad etc. their prepared foods are friggin amazing! Two words-meat pies! Omfg!! Feel like I'm at Jazz Fest without the crowd and the meat pie tastes better than the crawfish pie even though you want the crawfish pie to taste better, you know what I mean? Plus the staff are super friendly behind the counter. They also have a decent wine selection. Love this neighborhood store! I remember when it was the original Whole Foods back in the day! Plus it's so convenient near Maple Street bookstore (new and used books and they buy books, Swirl wine bar (fun new year's eve at a private party there), Fair Grinds coffeehouse (now I finally remember the name! Hehe with the bank lamps and strong yummy chai!), Santa Fe with nice owners and lots of outdoor seating and live music some nights with yummy margaritas!, Nonna Mia (my fav outdoor patio and panini!), Lola's across the street (can we say authentic paella with the best sangria anywhere!), and Cafe Degas which I still need to go and use my Groupon!

Yelp
Several months ago I discovered the Canseco's Italian pasta salad. I love the tang of the dressing combined with the crunch of the veggies perfectly mixed in. I live around the block and look forward to that salad each time I visits Canseco's. I have noticed, however, that they've been making it less and less. I have been habitually disappointed for the past several months as I have discovered that recipe is not in continual rotation. Can we please get the Italian pasta salad back????

Yelp
I like this place, a little pricey but that's to be expected given the neighborhood it's in. This is more of a general informational post than a review actually, and it really shouldn't count against the place. I thought that it would be a good idea to roll out of bed at around 6pm with a hangover so bad that it would make the Pope renounce God, and then blindly find my way to the store for food. I knew I had to eat or risk this hangover interfering with my plans to drink again that night. My brother was with me, and honestly the blame lays squarely on his shoulders here. He should have been a voice of reason and steered me toward something like chicken soup or beefaroni, but no.... 30 bucks later I was on my way back home, an hour later I was spectacularly ill. The lesson here is that it's actually not a good idea to buy ALL of the prepackaged "sushi" that's left on the rack a half hour before closing and then eat all of it while watching American Pickers and planning an evening of drinking. You will regret it, the cab ride to the bar on the notoriously smooth and well maintained streets of New Orleans will not be your friend. But yeah, Cansecos is really nice though, the staff is always friendly and it's close to City Park so it's a convenient stop to grab snacks if you plan to drink in the park.

Yelp
Great place to get all your grocery needs and more with great prices. Also sells hard liquor for those festive seasons. The hot deli does not disappoint either. Its like eating at grandmas house.

Yelp
An amazing neighborhood grocery store! They have a great selection and are more than willing to order anything you ask for! The employees are always super friendly and helpful! Great wine and beer selection and always running specials!

Yelp
What a fine, fine store! Lots of goodies, an ATM which comes in handy during Jazz Fest, a deli with loads of options and a staff who is sincere and helpful. Can you ask for anything else from a neighborhood store?
google avatar

Yelp
Super convenient, tiny little grocery store in Mid-City. My only complaint is that it tends to be kind of expensive, as in Whole Foods kind of expensive, but they've got everything I need and it just makes me happy to go there. Plus I'm too lazy to go to the real grocery store.

Yelp
ONE OF THE BETTER CUBAN PO'BOYS IN TOWN. I say po'boy because it is not a Cuban sandwich because it is not made on Cuban bread. What makes Canseco's stand out from other local attempts is the generous portions of pulled pork, ham and Swiss, as well as a good slathering of yellow mustard and plenty of pickles. With a side of Mac & Cheese and beverage the meal totals just $10.32 after-tax. RANT: PRESSED OVERPOWERING LEIDEHEIMER RUINS A CUBAN! PLEASE USE A VIETNAMESE BAGUETTE INSTEAD! Cuban bread, similar to a Vietnamese baguette, is waxy and chewier than po'boy bread. The texture's velvety pliable unlike a good po'boy loaf that strives for a crispy crust resembling an alligator back. Consequently the key recipe ratios are vastly different. For every cup of flour a Cuban and a Vietnamese baguette have half the sugar of the po'boy and 2-3 times the fat. In fact true Cuban recipes call for lard and not butter. The difference shows up in the grilling process. When Leidenheimer is toasted it has a strong nutty taste that's quite overpowering. Further it becomes dry and practically falls apart when eaten. Conversely, true Cuban bread when pressed stays slick and intact with just a touch of butter flavor. Toasted Leidenheimer is so pungent and crunchy you can't taste the subtleties of the two meats and Swiss, accented by the tartness of the mustard and pickles. But when true Cuban bread is used those ingredients blossom in that soft buttery loaf. BONA FIDES: I lived in Key West 3 years and one of the subjects Conchs are most particular about is how to make Cuban bread and what not to put in the sandwich (tomatoes, onions, lettuce or mayonnaise!) GREAT SITE FOR MORE INFO: http://icuban.com/food/pan_cubano2.html BUT I HAVEN'T BEEN BACK! There are way too many alternatives in the area now that get my dollars!

Yelp
I always leave Canseco's with a smile on my face. -friendly and helpful staff -aesthetically pleasing -convenient -small enough to feel personal -big enough to have what you need -deli food is appetizing -nice cheese selection -always a few good looking people in the store

Yelp
I come in from out of town a couple of times a month to ride my bike around the city to d-stress and clear my head when works gets tough. The location is a great place to park and start my ride. This is a nice clean place with a great selection of whatever you need to enjoy your time in the city plus there is a clean restroom. The people are so nice. Last week I had an emergency confrenece call which included printed forms. Walked in and asked if i could recieve a fax for my meeting....no problem. I love these people and this place. Located right across the street from a park. Wow what else could a person ask for in a food market. Locals are so lucky to have a place like this close by.

Yelp
i love this location however i prefer the one on elysian fields because it has more of a selection. honestly i'm in love with their smoked turkey salad..... it's sooo good with club crackers!! btw: one rule in my house.."don't mess with my turkey salad or else!!!"

Yelp
Love this little market that's packed with everything. The best part is super friendly staff. The cashiers are always funny and happy.

Yelp
Convenient, nice location. Pretty decent selection for a small neighborhood grocery (organic products along with conventional grocery store fare). Pretty expensive, but I would rather go here than Rouses.
google avatar

Feldman A.

Yelp
Cansecos on Esplanade is one more reason to love my neighborhood. The staff is super nice, and for a little corner mini-market, the selection is top notch. The prices are a little high for some stuff, yeah, but if you watch the specials, you can get some stuff cheaper here than in Rouses. It ain't Walmart, dats-fer-shur, but the quality and sophistication here is high, and the staff and the management are tippy top. Plus, they have one of the best lunch specials in Mid-City. I should keep it a secret, but there you go. I grab lunch there at least twice a week.
google avatar

Teddy E.

Yelp
This market is pretty expensive and the produce leaves something to be desired, but it's convenient if you live nearby without a car.

Yelp
Avoid this place at all costs- your cost. They are intent on price gouging every item at the price point, and ciphoning off from otherwise well meaning customers. Every item is at least .50 higher than normal retail, and in many and in the case of 2 items recently, $1 more than other groceries, and infuriatingly marked 'on sale'!! (Community coffee $7 a bag, $6 at Rouses, usually always on sale at Rouse's for $4.50). They are exploiting being the only market in a food desert of Faubourg St. John, rather than sympathizing with this real problem. Fortunately for essential goods there is a solution: Sip wine store next door handles distribution of Hollygrove Market's weekly CSA box upon preorder at Hollygrove's website, every Saturday. Really though, it's one thing for the 'New Orleans Food Co-op' to overcharge in a blantantly bourgeoise, trustafarian, organic grocery pretense, but Canseco's is also audaciously fronting as a Mom and Pop place. And this is not a 'Cuban' grocery, nor anything to be found. The staff is the slowest to be found anywhere, completely consistently spaced out, the prepared foods are terrible, and the wine selection is terrible. I saw an associate stock multiple packages of rotten herbs on the shelf. They should learn that they don't hold a monopoly on staple goods: Rouse's is yet another 10 min. walk, and better still is the Italian grocery-convenience store across the street. Naive one-time visitor tourists have all favorably reviewed this place here.

Yelp
Old Timey folks (ok, those of us who lived here in the 90's) remember the Whole Foods on Esplanade. Clint Maedgan even likes to refer to it in song. But I have to say that I have been pleasantly surprised by the Canseco's market that has moved into that building. Right after Hurricane Gustav, when the neighborhood was without power for DAYS (thanks, Entergy), this grocery got a couple of generators and let us creep around in the dark foraging for fruit, canned goods, chips, wine, and anything else that didn't need refrigeration. There was enough power for them to run one light and one register and the floors were soaking wet, but everyone was in a good, joking mood and the spirit of the neighborhood really came out. I go here now whenever I run out of milk, need a bottle of wine, some local Creole Cream Cheese ice cream, fresh fruit, or even a birthday card for a friend. It beats hitting up the Rouse's on a weekend or driving out to Wal-Mart. For staples the prices are a little high, but I will continue to shop here whenever the need arises.
