Cantina Do Mori

This place was recommended to me by a Venezian friend. Apparently, it’s very well-known and well-liked among the locals. We came here for a light lunch. I had a selection of cicchetti, along with a glass of wine. There is a very good selection of wines and their prices are more than reasonable. They also serve sandwiches. There are very few stools (both inside and outside) but we were lucky to find a place to sit and enjoy our lunch. We paid 20 euros per person.

This was the start of a crawl that my husband and I ventured out on during a misty day in the off-season of Venice. Bourdain visited this in the early days of NR. Perfect first stop as we tucked into this tiny place filled with hanging copper pots and elder locals. We did two rounds and enjoyed every bite and every sip!

I visited Cantina Do Mori last week and received excellent service and really liked the space. The wine selection was good, but the cicchetti were a bit hit or miss.

This wine tavern is an absolute treasure. The cozy, rustic atmosphere immediately makes you feel at home, with charming copper pots hanging from the ceiling and shelves lined with carefully selected bottles. It’s like stepping into another time – authentic, warm, and full of character. The selection of wines on tap was outstanding, with something for every palate. Each glass was served with care, and the staff was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, happy to explain the different varieties and make great recommendations. If you’re looking for a genuine, local wine experience with charm and soul, this is the place. I could have stayed here all evening – I’ll definitely be back!

Cute wine bar with a nice rustic feel. Felt like a hangout for locals. There are so many wine options with some small bites. Great experience overall.

Well…this review is hard. The place, the history, the atmosphere is 5 stars or more! Now the food it is actually less than 4. We arrived at 14:15, not that off from lunch time. They serve us cold everything, even the meat balls. The cheese was great, but the rest, honestly not very impressed. And we were five, this is not only my opinion. The wine was very good, red and wine, both. The server was efficient and quick, maybe not the friendliest, but again, considering the place and being only one running the whole shop it makes sense.

We were there today waiting patiently for our turn. A guy shows and cuts line, we say very politely to the staff sorry we are here first, and he just answers “wait a little more “. Not a sorry not a I misunderstood not anything . Pure rudeness and unprofessional manners. Other than that it was expensive with mediocre cicheti and mediocre wine. The inside is beautiful though !

Horrible! This place is past its prime. Cicchetti toast was so hard it cut my mouth. Meatballs weird, lumpy like from a school lunch. They charge 0.50 Euro for stale water. Don't know where the charm is. Dead ambience. NOT RECOMMENDED.

I've visited Venice several times over the years and I always make time to stop in here for their Baccalà cicchetti. Paired with a glass of Prosecco, there is literally no better way to take a break from the walking and the heat. The service is always friendly and the cafe itself is cozy and charming.

We went in here quickly with the intention to just try some Cichetti for the first time. We got one with card, to just try and then to see if we wanted more. It was quite good, however, we watched the man knock over one of the pieces onto the FLOOR, then clean everything up, put more topping on it and then put the piece of bread back on the tray. This was something worth 3 euros, it was crazy.

This is a great spot for cicchetti and wine! The prices are very reasonable. There a few stools at a small bar so there is a good chance you'll be standing as in most spots in Venice. The man working the bar was kind and gave great suggestions for their wines and bites!

One of the places on my Anthony Bourdain walk that I put together for this trip. AB is never wrong so I knew this was going to be great. Cicchetti was nice and paired well with the wine that was recommended. And I really enjoyed the old school tavern vibes.

This is one of the oldest Bacaros in Venice introduced to us from the food tour. There's a double entrance from two alleys near the Rialto Bridge. Small little bar so it gets really crowded. Do Mori offers one of the best selection of Cicchettis which are small single serving portions of typical Venetian dishes (they look like bruschetta topped with seafood except the bread is soft) and meant to be enjoyed standing up by the bar. You will see different ways anchovies and bacalao served in Venice.

We came at around 2:30pm and it wasn't full. There was another bar pretty close to this one that had a line out the door but this place was quiet. We ordered 4 of the cicchetti and a prosecco. I can't tell you exactly which cicchetti we got as there are no tags on any of them BUT they were all delicious so just pick blindly. This was another great recommendation by Anthony Bourdain. The servers/barmen aren't particularly friendly but don't let that deter you and just order. You order at the bar and pay. Then you sit and enjoy. I would definitely recommend it to people visiting Venice

OMGosh the best Cicchetti on our Ciccheti crawl. The setting is historic, filled with charm and vibe. The food was really good. Wine was awesome. We sat in the alley outside dining off of old wine barrels. Loved this spot oh so much.

Didn't get to even try. While I waited behind a group of 3 people to order, a local came right in next to me. As soon as the trio was finished ordering, the local steps right up and orders. The guy behind the bar said nothing so my husband and I just left. Just rude.

Oldest wine bar in Venice has terrific wine and excellent appetizers like bacala. Ambience is very cool and very much a place for the locals and insiders. Good service. We discovered it on a food tour thanks to our guide. A treasure.

The bread was stale, the fish was bad, i'm worried i'll have food poisoning tomorrow. I would not recommend.

You can't beat the ambiance at Cantini Do Mori. This little establishment dates back to 1462 and is the oldest, continuously operating bar in Venice. Good selection of wine. We stopped in around 4pm...neither lunchtime or prime cicchetti time, so maybe that's why the selection was limited. Cantina do mori is known for their "postage stamp" mayo soaked finger sandwiches, and what they had at the time did not look all that appealing. We ended up getting an assortment of other cicchetti, all served room temperature. Pass on the cicchetti. Very limited seating and no bathrooms.

No trip to Venice is complete without spending an afternoon eating cichetti and drinking wine in a charming bacaro (Venetian gastropub). Located just footsteps away from the Rialto Mercado, Cantina do Mori has been serving cichetti to Venetians since 1462. Do Mori can be a little hard to find because it is tucked down a narrow alley. TIP: The entrance to the alley is right across from the Chiesa di San Giovanni Elemosinario (if you are nearby, just look up and you will see the bell tower). What is cichetti? Cichetti are basically Italian tapas. Just don't call cichetti "tapas". The Italians are a very proud people! Don't be shy, if there are no tables available just find some standing room at the bar and enjoy one of the oldest traditions in Venice. Many of the cichetti were not labeled so I just pointed to whatever looked good. Most of the smaller cichetti on the toothpicks are €1-2 each. Seafood and larger plates are more expensive. We enjoyed a delicious variety of cured meats, cheese, small sandwiches. The marinated octopus and the meatballs were my favorites. Half of the fun is having no clue what you are eating. At one point I accidentally tried some foul tasting fish served over a crostini... it was an excuse to drink more wine! Speaking of wine, order the house wine. It's cheap, €2.5 to €4 per glass and it tastes great!

Stopped in this bar simply for a few glasses of wine (did not try the food)- just to experience the really cool ambiance of this bacaro that dates back to 1462. Dark and earthy inside, copper pots hanging from the ceiling (once used to collect water), wooden decor, and barrels used as tables (to eat and stand-no sitting). They had a wide selection of cheap cichetti and wines, with fast, friendly service. Definitely make this a stop while you're in Venice; you'll get a great feel for the vibe and atmosphere of the city!!

Bf: "I'm gonna find it, even if I have to use up ALL of my megabytes!!!" * sigh * Here's the thing about Venice: google maps doesn't work here. It tells you to turn into this main street, go straight for 200 m, make a right into an alley which leads to a smaller alley, turn left and you end up ..... right where you started. I've a pretty good sense of direction, but apparently, not here. Half an hour and 50 MB later, he gives up. We were ready to just head back towards the Rialto Bridge when we turned a corner and .... voila! The Cantina Do Mori sign was staring at us straight in the face. Go Figure!! I heard about this place from a fellow traveler, Anthony Bourdain. The guy knows his stuff, right? Being the oldest cichetti bar (cichetti is tapas in Venezia) in town, of course we had to go here. I love the old world ambiance of the place: dark, lots of wood beams, copper pots hanging from the ceiling and casks of wine behind the bar. Offerings are encased behind a glass compartment and range from cheeses, small sandwiches, salumi, pickled onions and seafood. Point what looks good and hope for the best! Skip the sandwiches and focus more on the meats and veggies. The mushroom and cippolini onions, stewed eggplant, grilled octopus (get several if you love, love octopus) meatballs and salami. Their wines vary greatly in prices, so we opted for the cheapest ones: a glass of 2.50 euro Montepulciano and 3 euros for prosecco, because one thing I've noticed in Italy, you really can't go wrong even with the cheapest wine, it's still very good! Just remember, like any tapas bars, your bill can easily get spendy and keep in mind this place is cash only.

I was happy to find this hole in the wall wine bar place. Well, I did not find it to be exact...my hotel concierge sent me. When I heard the name first, I thought it's some sort of Japanese eating place due to 'Mori'...anyhow, I love the ambiance, and loved it more after I heard this place opened back in the 15th century - the oldest bar in Venice for sure! As an ignorant traveler, I had to ask what those buckets hanging from the ceilings were for. ;) I did not know this place was introduced by Anthony Bourdain's show until someone pointed out while I was there, but it did not matter. You come here, enjoy the ambiance, and of course wines. Those finger food (aka mini sandwiches) may not be the best tasting food (to be honest), but hey they're very cheap and it's perfect to accompany your wines especially if you don't feel like big meal. If you order cheapy wines, they serve in a crappy glass. But if you order nice (aka more expensive) ones, they serve in a big wine glass. :) They close early (8pm), in fact, they start closing preparation around 7:30pm, so ideally you should come here for a glass or two before your dinner...or breakfast/lunch if you are up for. They open at 8am, haha. Cash only, folks!

Visited Venice with a friend and did a tour called "Eat Like the Locals...Authentic Venice Small Group Food Tour" and this was one of our stops. I probably would not have found this restaurant on my own. It's a small old restaurant with a pretty cool interior (see pictures). The most traditional way for Venetians to eat and hang out is at wine bars known as bacari. Where you stand around together in the bar and talk over an ombra (small glass of wine) and cicchetti (Venetian tapas). Here we had Cicchetti (with sardines and onions) and cuttlefish. Both were very good! I highly recommend this restaurant, the food was amazing!! After eating like a "tourist" my first few meals in Venice I was sure glad I found a place where the "locals" eat...it was soooooo much better!!!! I will definitely dine here again and try other menu items!

Cute, old world cantina. Small but more than adequate. Dank and earthy. Focused choice of whites and reds, along with a few Spumante. Light food fare. Owners are friendly and attentive. Esposa and I enjoyed a big earthy Brunello. Rustic and delicious. Warm and inviting place to grab a quick drink or eat on the main walking path. Salute!

Really cool spot. It seems like a lot of tour groups breeze in but it's worth it to stop for a bit longer. They had good tapas, a good variety of fried and other types as well. It's a small space, pretty much standing room only. It's definitely a great stop, I'd recommend it!

Hands down, this was my favorite cicchetti joint in Venice. First off, the wine. There is a lot of it. And it's really good. The man who was working in there was amazing and allowed me to try so many different types of wine. It was my "ah-ha" moment where I realized just how good wine can be. Highly recommend their pino bianco. Now...the food. Sheesh, there was so much of it and everything I tried was amazing. Unlike some of the other cicchetti places I wandered into, everything looked incredibly fresh, not like it had been sitting there for 8 hours untouched. There was also an incredible variety. I especially appreciated the many baccala options. My trip to Cantina Do Mori was truly one of the highlights of my trip to Venice.

Very atmospheric spot to stop for wine and cicchetti. No outside seating and only a couple of seats inside as it's a stand up cicchetti place, but it is a very atmospheric place. Old wooden and copper wine paraphernalia decorate hanging from everywhere. The cicchetti were delicious, I tried several seafood based ones and the wine was good as well, about a dozen red and a dozen white choices. Note that they open early (8am I think) and close early (8pm).

While exploring the hot spots of Venice, my husband and I took care to avoid the tourist traps, seeking authentic experiences instead. We were happy to fall into this place near the Rialto Bridge. The wines we had were fabulous, and the snacks we selected were quite good (except the octopus! I had to try it since I saw a local eat one!). There were many young locals snacking and socializing, and we enjoyed doing the same amongst them. The vibe is rustic and old, the staff friendly. Certainly put this on your list for a quick and easy bite and drink. We did not know that this gem was featured on an Anthony Bourdain show, but it's easy to see why he'd select this place!

An interesting spot where you can try a variety of small food items...and of course wine. We ordered about 20 euros of food and two glasses of wine. Some meat and cheese options...some shrimp and bruschetta options. Not a place to eat a full meal, but something different for a snack.

Colour me in loooooooooooove! Upon arrival in Venice we dumped our bags at our accomodation and set off for a wander. Now, we'd done a lot of research beforehand and had read all about the bacari - traditional Venetian bars where you can buy a little glass of wine for roughly 1 euro and a few cicheti (fancy bar snacks really) for about the same price. Do Mori is one of the oldest and most famous, and we happened upon it by accident. We did know it existed, and were planning to seek it out in advance, but oh! There we go, here it is, well it'd be rude not to go in having found it so early in our trip. We ordered 2 'ombra' of white wine, and a selection of cicheti to get us started. Oh wow. It's a revelation. We had two meatballs with a spicy sauce, two little squid and two crostini with some sort of fish on them. Delicious! And all reasonably priced, absolutely perfect. It was perhaps a little dearer than some of the other bacari we visited on our trip, but it was definitely the most beautiful with copper pots hanging from the ceiling and all dark wood. Very nice. Oh, and the barman who served us was very helpful! If you're in Venice you should definitely do a bacari crawl and make sure that Do Mori is top of your list!

Walking through the streets of Venice, one often wonders how much of the old city operates as a real one, or if it's mostly a Disney-like facade. It's easy to get that impression if you stick to the typical touristy destinations and base your culinary experience on places with photographic menus. If you take your time and wander down a side alley or two, you'll enjoy an experience provided by a place like Cantina Do Mori. Being so close to Ponte di Rialto, and being featured by Anthony Bourdain as the starting point on his night out on the town, I assumed that the cantina would be shoulder to shoulder when we arrived in the early evening. Our party of three quickly noticed that there were only two other patrons at the bar, both of them locals. In fact, throughout our time at the cantina, no tourists entered, and it seemed like those patrons who did knew the staff well. The bar is well decorated with a rustic venetian theme of dark woods, copper, and old photos on the wall. The cantina specializes in a thorough selection of Italian wines and the Venice specialty of cicchetti. This makes Cantina a bácari by definition, and you choose from a selection of the snacks a la carte. I tried some local cheeses and a fried piece of zucchini. A friend tried a crostini and some of their squid, which he claimed was the best he had tried in his life. We sampled a cross selection of various wines, both red and white. All were amazing varieties that I have no plans of forgetting soon. Cantina Do Mori is another Bourdain recommended bar that not only met but exceeded expectations greatly. I could go back to Venice for this place alone!

Such a cool little spot! I wanted to eat at a local spot and this definitely was one of those. They had some good variety of flat breads to choose from. I had a prosciutto with cantaloupe and I never thought it would taste good but it did. We also had their house white and red wine which was very smooth and delicious. There isn't a lot of seating so be prepared to stand or take your items to go. They also had a wide variety of cheeses to choose from. I wish I could remember the names but I can't. The cheese I did have was a couple white ones. If you want to try a local spot check this place out!!

Part of our food tour and they got great mini sandwiches. We came back another day and tried almost every one of their mini sandwiches, all are incredibly good and highly recommended. It's like English afternoon tea but unpretentious.

When you just get off a plane from S Fla and you haven't slept...the smart thing to do ofcourse, is to find the oldest bar in Venice and have some cicchetti and house red. A very cool place that's been around since 1462 on an intimate little alley. There are a handful of standing wine barrels to serve as tables to set up on and have a quick bite. We spent about €20 for a nice selection of cicchetti (everything was tasty) and a couple of glasses of wine. Very little English is spoken here so I was very thankful that I took the time to learn a little Italian (came in handy throughout the trip). When all else fails, pointing to what you want to eat always works. A great place with a lot of history.

This was our first stop when we landed in Italy. We had some great wine and a couple of small bites. We would have loved to eat more but we don't eat pork and unfortunately that dominated the menu here. The wine, however, was cheap and delicious!

The wine and cicchetti are delicious and plentiful, but it is extremely hard to find, even though there are two entrances. It has been open since 1462, with copper pots lining the ceiling. The resulting atmosphere is a bit sombre, and there is little seating. Great for a pit stop.

My wife and I sought this cool, cozy wine bar out because it's said that Giacomo Casanova frequented it! They have delicious and inexpensive cicchetti (salami, shrimp tramezzini, meatballs...) and a great selection of wines. The Prosecco Naturale was fantastic! They open and close early so it is a great spot for a quick lunch or an aperitivo before dinner!

The good: tasty meatballs and eggplant parm The bad: poor value. We had two glasses of house red and two small plates of chicchetti; it was 37 Euros. We tried went to several traditional bacari spots while in Venice; this was the worst value (see my other reviews). The bottom line: The food wasn't amazing, but it wasn't awful either. But the value just wasn't there. While in Venice, you can do much better. I probably wouldn't return.

Meat, cheeses, fish, wine, bruschetta, you name it. Very small place and the place is really OLD (I think he said since the 1400s). I stood and ate everything (no seating I don't think). Everything is wooden, and it almost feels like a bar you would see in the Pirates of the Caribbean, except Italiano style. Lol.

According to our food tour guide, this is the oldest baceria in Venice. The bread for their mini sandwiches is homemade and so soft, full of flavor. Great spot to stop grab a little bite and a drink!

My wife found Cantina Do Mori after doing a search of local wine bars in Venice. It is a little off of the tourist beaten path but I highly recommend checking it out. It has been open since 1462 and although ownership has not remained within a single family the layout and design have been kept in tact. There aren't any tables to sit at however there is some bar style seating available along the back wall. There is a wide selection of wine available to try as well as some freshly prepared snacks to pair alongside. We tried the Nozzole La Forra Chianti and a couple of the snacks were very impressed. Definitely a must see place if you enjoy wine and want to experience an authentic Venetian establishment

One of the oldest bars in Venice, we came here and enjoyed some cicchetti. We were feeling daring and tried the octopus, sardines, cod, and a few others. The meatball and fried carne were delicious. We had four glasses of wine and about 8 cicchetti and spent about 25 euros. The bartender with the piercing was super friendly and helped us picked his favorite choices. He was very kind even though we didn't speak any Italian. We would definitely come back here again

Finger food! Everything we had was delish! Cash only so be sure to bring those Euros. Close to Rialto Bridge and not excessively crowded even during the Tuesday Noon hour. No seats- standing at bar or on the ledges around the edges. Some places outside to stand and eat outside one of the doors, including a barrel. Two drinks and two platters full of items for 38 euros... not bad!

Highly recommend if you don't want your traditional pizza and pasta! This is truly a hidden gem and you won't regret getting the baccarat!

After reading that Anthony Bourdain came here on his visit, we sought out some ciccheti (little snacks and small glasses of wine) at Cantina do Mori on a Monday afternoon. It was a bit hard to find, but was worth it when we made it there. Just look for signs that say do Mori and try to follow the street numbers to 429! Unexpectedly, it was not crowded at all. The guys working were nice and charming. The decor was photo worthy, wooden wine decanters displayed and brass buckets hanging from the ceilings. The food was pretty good, we tried some things we had never had before. All of their snacks were on crostini. The house red wine was delicious. I had 1 glass of wine and 3 snacks and only spent about 7 euro. Be mindful that this places closes around 2:30 and re-opens around 5pm.

BEST cicchetti place in Venice! And GREAT customer service for English speakers, not rude like some others. Awesome ambiance. Go early!

We had a blast eating little sandwiches in this medieval feeling wine bar. The bar man was really nice, the atmosphere great, the food delicious, and the wine delightful. We loved this one so much that after visiting a different wine bar we came back for the rest of our evening. It is hard to find, but keep looking. It is definitely worth the time and effort!

We rented an apartment for two weeks one summer a few blocks away from here. This Cicchetti (tapas, snacks) bar, the oldest in Venice, is a short way from the market, it is a classic. A lot of the market workers ended up here when they were finished working. It is a little difficult to find as it has no sign and the addresses in Venice make no sense. It is small, with low heavy wood beamed ceilings that are not much taller than me, not very much light and there is no place to sit. Other than that it is great. I would go shopping in the market in the morning for dinner and stop by for a few snacks and a glass or two of wine. They always had several great bottles of white on ice in a big copper bucket. It felt so completely decadent because it was always well before noon. I imagined I was living like a real Venetian. BTW, ALL of the Cicchetti here are GREAT.

Great little Venetian wine bar with a lot of history. Came in with my wife on a day when the fog was so bad in Venice it practically shut the city down. To be clear, we came in here as they opened at 8am. We ordered some wine and sat on some bar stools to escape the cold. As their runner ran down the block to the Rialto fish market, their famous cicchetti began to put together and on display behind the bar. Some great choices of snacks with some good selections of wine that won't drain your wallet. If you are daring, try the fresh whole baby octopus

Great wine, finger foods on toothpicks and small sandwiches. Guy there not the friendliest, but he was playing heavy metal in the kitchen... I understood. Sardines on bread, cheeses, octopus, tuna and ham sandwich were great. I'd rather fill up here than lot of other places. They close 8, right after ciesta, and isn't easy to find. Keep it simple and move on.
