I don't know why I continue to be surprised by reviews that the unfussy "real" Chinese restaurants get from customers expecting Panda Express authenticity, doting service, and military precision. They'd be a lot happier waiting an hour in line for PF Chang's.
If you are culturally aware, and understand that your dining experience at this type of establishment might involve brusque service, a separate menu you may not be offered because most people who look like you would probably say, "Ew!" or "I don't know what half is this crap is!", and a bit of disorganization (maybe you get your soup after the rice arrives), then you will be very happy with Canton. Their food is solid, consistent, and very Cantonese with a few Americanized abominations (walnut shrimp, sweet and sour pork, etc) thrown in to keep the masses happy.
I ate my most recent meal--the scrambled eggs with shrimp lunch special) a little too fast to photograph anything but rice, but trust me--it was a nice-sized portion and it was very good. My server was exceptionally attentive! She filled my water glass three times, did not rush me as a solo diner, and offered a box before I asked for one.
Other things I like to order here are egg foo yung, pork & preserved vegetable soup, and prawns with lobster sauce. (Yes, I'm a bit of a Chinese food snob, but I do acknowledge my taste for dishes with somewhat questionable authenticity.)
It's difficult to find good Cantonese food around here. If you're in the mood for it, relax, go with the flow, and enjoy your deliciously imperfect experience.
