9 Under-the-radar Safari Experiences Travel Experts Recommend for the Trip of a Lifetime

"One of my favorite under-the-radar safari properties is the Canvas and Orchids Retreat in the Cardamom Rainforest: an eco-glamping site with just 13 luxury tents, some sitting on floating platforms over the Tatai River with private sundecks facing the Peam Krasaop Wildlife Sanctuary; you can swim, boat to waterfalls, take guided jungle treks and nature walks, visit local fishing villages, and encounter hundreds of bird species as well as wild monkeys, cats, crocodiles, and even wild Asian elephants." - Samantha Falewée Samantha Falewée Samantha Falewée is an associate editor for Travel + Leisure, interested in adventure and culinary travel, Indigenous culture, and wildlife conservation. Went there as a couple and with friends, and we were all enchanted by this place. The location and environment are unique, on the Tatai River surrounded by jungle and mountains. It’s the most beautiful area I visited in Cambodia. Beyond the location, the resort is also unique with large floating or on land tents with the comfort of a luxury hotel. Very good food and services on top of all these make it an amazing experience for an immersive nature retreat.

The hotel is good, location is great but is definitely over priced, considering the fact that getting in and out of there is difficult. So when you add up the costs for a cab in and out of there, it certainly adds up. It’s a nice getaway but I would say that value for money is not great when you compare this property with many other similar locations like. Malaysia or even Bali. The rooms are pretty hot considering that it’s basically a tent and there is no aircon. The water in the bathroom is funky. After rinsing my mouth with the water, I ended up having a really bad bout of stomach infection and ended up throwing up the whole night. All in all, the river and cardamom forests are lovely but the time taken to get there and the costs are a bit much.

Probably one of the most chilled places I have visited. So relaxing and peaceful. The floating tents are fabulous and just sitting on your terrace gazing at the river is such a great way to destress. The staff are so friendly and food is excellent. I’d highly recommend a visit

So lucky to be one of the few to venture here. Peace, tranquility with a touch of jungle luxury. Excellent new roads and a short private boat ride, greeted by enthusiastic eco aware, local team made our stay a dream. The Khmer people of Cambodia are so friendly. Safest county I have travelled to in a while (except Laos perhaps).

We were genuinely inspired by the thoughtful personal touches provided by the staff throughout our stay. Just a few examples that made our experience truly memorable:||Each morning, hot water and freshly baked cookies were delivered right to our tent for a cozy start with coffee.||The staff took the time to introduce us to the gardener, who was not only responsible for the beautiful surroundings but also kindly managed the tent’s curtains during rain.||A friendly mechanic personally came by to introduce himself and assured us that any issues would be addressed immediately—such attentive service!||We stayed for 2 nights, but it felt far too short to soak in everything this magical place offers. The comfort, care, and serene atmosphere make it an ideal retreat. We strongly recommend staying at least 3 nights to truly experience the charm and relaxation this place provides. It's simply perfect.

A True Hidden Gem – Pure Tranquility, Exceptional Hospitality, and a Heart for Sustainability Staying at Canvas and Orchids Retreats was an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived, I felt completely at peace—beautifully isolated from the noise of the outside world. The setting is incredibly serene, with stunning floating tents surrounded by lush nature and gentle waters. It’s the perfect place to truly relax and unwind. What stood out even more was the impeccable service. The team is warm, attentive, and genuinely thoughtful. The owners were present throughout our stay, always making sure every guest felt welcome and taken care of. Their presence and personal touch added so much to the experience. Another reason this place is so special is their commitment to sustainability and the local community. They actively support local people through employment and sourcing, which makes your stay feel even more meaningful. It’s inspiring to see a resort that combines luxury with real purpose. If you’re looking for a peaceful escape, with heartfelt hospitality and values that go beyond just tourism, this is the place. I left feeling recharged, inspired, and already dreaming of my next visit.

The setting is nothing short of magical. We arrived through the mountain road from Battambang which is largely unpaved but in the midst of massive investment - it was a 6 hour drive through the beautiful scenery of the Cardamom Mountains and a far superior drive compared to the one from / to Phnom Penh. From the embarkation point you sail for 30 minutes on a traditional longboat soaking up the atmosphere of the river. The sense on arrival is awe inspiring.|Staff is enthusiastic and incredibly welcoming and helpful. Tents are very spacious and comfortable. Well appointed also. Plenty of fans though of course no air conditioning and the tents get quickly very hot in the morning but are fine in the evening and at night.

Set on the river, this location is ideal for peace and quiet in a beautiful setting. The staff are so thoughtful, kind and helpful- nothing was too much trouble. The daily sunrise and sunset was incredibly picturesque. You can swim / kayak in the river from your own accommodation or go on trips to the waterfalls or mangroves. The glamping tent was very well equipped and we had 2 fans- but could have more if required - NB no air conditioning. Definitely a back to nature feel to this and well worth a visit.
