When the Navajo Nation Reopens, Visitors Must Return Slowly—And Respectfully

"One of my favorite drives is from Window Rock, Arizona, the Navajo capital, to the town of Chinle, the gateway to Canyon de Chelly National Monument. The route cuts through acres of rabbitbrush and past forests thick with pines. Once you reach the canyon, its rust red cliffs descend into a valley where Navajo families still live, farming its rich soil and raising sheep."

A beautiful piece of history. Many great places to walk around and get a view of the canyon. During the time that we went, the one trail leading into the canyon that had been previously open to the public, was closed and had been for a few years (Nov 2024). However, you can hire a guide to go into the canyon. We didn’t necessarily have the funds for that, but it was worth it anyway to get the views from the top.

Great views at the many overlooks. I did both the north and the south and every stop was amazing. Such an amazing place! I talked to other sightseers and a few of them recommended the canyon tour to see much much more from below. There are not that many facilities available at the overlooks, just a few have toilets. Almost every overlook has local people sitting there in the parking areas, set up, selling their crafts...

Incredible history culture geology and people. Hiking down into the canyon was hard work but better than a bumpy loud jeep ride. Dinè guide required. Follow the rules to keep it a treasure accessible to everyone!

Returning to see Canyon de Chelly after 50 years was amazing. Refreshing my memories made for a wonderful day. This is an absolutely beautiful canyon and has some of the best cliff dwellings. The hike to White house is a great adventure. Even just driving to each of the observation spots is worth the time and effort. Spider Rock is always something to see, but hiring a guide to allow you to drive in the canyon and see Spider Rock from below is spectacular.

I visited the white House overview. The site had been closed for almost 5 years. It's a very nice visit. The actual site overview is nice and clean and gives a good view. The trail is clear of debris and well marked. The views from the trail are amazing. It is a moderate climb, so don't think people are over reacting. There is no water and no facilities along the way. This sure is also marked as a 'No Vendor' site, so there will be no trinkets available.

Truly God's miracle an amazing place to visit. Not for the faint of heart. If you're not capable of hiking or walking much this isn't for you. Only one bathroom facility other than the Welcome Center is located on the Northern route. Make sure you have good shoes as some of the ground is unstable.

We were only able to visit The Antelop House Overlook due to our time constraint. We were very happy that we picked this Overlook. The views were spectacular. I would love to be able to come back and enjoy this National Park. There is also no fee to enter this park.

Simply breathtaking! Highly recommend a visit to this place and hire a Navajo guide so you enjoy the full experience.
