We stayed in the self-catering Family Loft, called “Luxury” on the website, but we felt it was a far cry, and despite high hopes we unfortunately wouldn’t recommend Cape Dutch Quarters.
The site lists amenities for the room we stayed in as including a queen bed, but it was a double with a mattress that sags in the middle. The linen was clean but the pillows might be authentic from the Victorian era they were so lumpy.
Issues with hot water supply and water pressure throughout our stay (attributed to a municipal issue, but unresolved and inconvenient).
We had to ask multiple times for a hairdryer - one of the complimentary facilities mentioned on the website - and eventually we were given a relic to use that was so ineffective we shouldn’t have bothered.
Despite attractive photos online, our particular room was gloomy and poorly lit in reality.
Air conditioning unit makes very loud clanking noises sporadically through the night.
Service from Jayson was varied. Seemed friendly at times but also came across as snarky/ irritable. Called the venue we were going to be attending a wedding at (Mont Rouge) as “dodge” an likened it to a “pak stal”- not great ambassadorship for Tulbagh, which is very ironic considering his efforts to improve and advocate for the town, apparently being on various relevant tourism boards etc. (and in our experience this turned out to be untrue).
My husband said he sounded annoyed when the keys we were given didn’t work, but Jayson then seemed surprised when he tried them himself and found it was actually the case. He did remedy this immediately.
Charmaine at the front desk was warm and welcoming, a the other staff on the premises were all very pleasant.
We were asked to tread carefully in our room so as not to disturb the guests downstairs. Fair as far as not dragging furniture around etc. but made us feel quite self-conscious and kept asking the kids to be careful, which wasn’t very relaxing for anyone despite them being pretty well-behaved.
Overall, we will obviously not be returning to this particular establishment, and based on Jayson’s responses to other negative reviews it’s highly doubtful we’d be welcome to 😂
The town has an interesting history and some beautiful historic sites worth visiting.
