This is my second stay at Cape Rey. This is a lovely location with high standards for cleanliness and customer service. The people at check-in are very friendly, and every meal at Chandler's exceeds expectations. Unfortunately, our experience at the pool on the second day of our stay reminded us of simmering tensions in the world, and I have to address them here. An employee, a Black woman, was bitten by a medium sized dog. The dog was left by the fire pit unattended, and the owners were at the jacuzzi about 100 feet away. The employee had to raise her voice to get someone to hear her calls for the removal of the dog and the owner, a white woman, emerged from the jacuzzi, holding her baby, and began to escalate the situation. Instead of showing concern for the employee or apologizing (which anyone would do), the guest began to tone police her, saying "don't f*cking talk to me that way!" and telling her that it's the beach and she can bring her dog wherever she wants. Another guest, also a white woman and presumably a friend of the dog owner, stood up and put her camera phone in the employees face which only exacerbated the situation and provoked the employee to defend herself. I personally told the dog owner that she was making everyone at the pool uncomfortable, and she began to challenge me aggressively even though she was holding her baby. I told the guest the employee was only representing the best interest of the property, and she again challenged me, making me feel like she was willing to physically accost me. I left the situation as soon as the manager arrived and felt comfortable the employee was safe. The guest with the camera phone turned to me and said "this is what happens when you walk up to a dog you don't know" as if it's the employee's role to make friends with a dog instead of the owner's responsibility to ensure the dog doesn't pose a threat to others. I was deeply distressed at what I witnessed and the role that bias and microaggression played in making a situation go from bad to worse. It's my sincere hope that the employee be given a fair opportunity to share her side of the story. In this situation, the guests should have been asked to leave the pool but they returned in just a few minutes, acting vindicated, indignant, and consequence-free.
