An In-Depth Travel Guide to Cape Town (Updated 2025)
"We kicked off our visit with a free walking tour, which was the best way to learn the main sights, pick up local history, and get recommendations from an expert guide — just remember to tip at the end since that’s how guides make their living." - Matthew Kepnes
Cedric was a very informative and knowledgeable guide. Bo-Kaap is such a stunning neighbourhood with an immense amount of rich history - not only about Cape Malay culture, but also many hidden gems related to Afrikaans culture and South Africa as a whole. The tour was truly eye-opening and offered a depth of context and storytelling that you don’t get from simply exploring on your own. I’d highly recommend this experience to anyone wanting to understand Cape Town beyond the surface.
The only point of improvement would be to walk more given it’s a walking tour haha, there was a lot of standing in one place and we felt we could have seen more places!

What an awesome guide and experience! Troy made our tour so much fun, he was super accommodating and polite, always checking in to make sure we had everything we needed.
It honestly felt like our own private adventure, with his personal insights and that great sense of humor keeping everyone laughing the whole time!
Can't recommend Troy enough for an unforgettable outing!

What a sensational concept! Cape Town Free Walking Tours offers a selection of guided tours around the system based on different themes. I did the Bo-Kaap cultural tour departing at 2pm. I had lunch at the coffee shop before the tour started. Our group only had 8 people and our guide Tim was amazing. Excellent storyteller and happy to answer all the questions we had along the way. I felt safe exploring the neighbourhood being part of this group. We learned a lot about the Muslim history, restaurants, architecture and end of apartheid. Please tip your guide generously, they deserve it as volunteers. I had planned to do another tour the following day but ended up getting sick so was unable to take further advantage of this setup. Wish more cities would run tours like this!

We did the 9:30 Bo-Kaap tour and the 11:00 Apartheid Tour with Tim and it was great! Not only did he know a lot of historical facts and stories about the history of Cape Town, but as a contemporary witness and growing up as a white ZA under the Apartheid, he was able to vividly explain everything going on at that time.
Overall 10/10 highly recommended

We went on the Historic City and Bo Kaap Tours. Both were great but Bo Kaap with very knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour guide Cameron was particularly interesting! A great way to spend a couple of hours to learn about the city and get some local tips.
