Taking the plunge with freediving in Cape Town - SilverKris

"At a dive school in Muizenberg run by John Daines, I completed a two-day freediving course that taught breathing techniques, how to lower my heart rate and use mental control to resist the CO2-driven urge to breathe; Daines, a calm, athletic former competitive freediver who can hold his breath close to seven minutes, shifted from chasing records to non-competitive adventure freediving, and his school—Cape Town Freediving—was the first in South Africa to offer recreational adventure freediving about four years ago, helping me extend my breath-hold to more than three and a half minutes and attracting growing interest from people seeking mindfulness, slowness and stress relief." - Tommy Trenchard

My daughter and I had the most incredible snorkeling experience today with Cape Town Free Diving, and it’s one I’ll be talking about for a long time. From the moment my daughter and I arrived, the team’s professionalism was clear—they were organized, friendly, and made sure we felt completely prepared before getting into the water. Our guide, Rex, was exceptional. His knowledge of the ocean and the local marine life made the experience both educational and unforgettable. He pointed out different sea creatures with genuine enthusiasm, sharing fun facts and making sure we didn’t miss a thing. What really stood out was how attentive he was throughout the entire trip. He constantly checked in to make sure my daughter and I felt comfortable, safe, and confident—something any parent truly appreciates. Cape Town Free Diving delivered an experience that was equal parts adventure and reassurance. Thanks to Rex, we were able to relax, explore, and enjoy the underwater world together. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a memorable and well-guided snorkeling adventure!

We had an amazing time snorkeling with the seals! From the moment we arrived, the staff was welcoming, friendly, and clearly very knowledgeable about the area and the animals. They provided all the necessary gear, so we felt comfortable and prepared for the experience. The water was quite cold at first, but as soon as we got in, we were too distracted by the playful seals to notice! They swam around us with so much curiosity and energy—it was a blast to watch and interact with them up close. A tip for future visitors: definitely rent an underwater camera. It made a huge difference in capturing the magical moments with these playful creatures. Overall, an unforgettable adventure that I highly recommend!

A friend and I did the snorkeling experience in the winter. The water was cold but we were provided extra thick wetsuits with a cap, gloves and shoes. We were very warm despite the cold weather. Our guide Chris was extremely professional and experienced. We've had a briefing at the start explaining the dangers and were guided very well in the water. The kelp forest is a magical place to dive and I can highly recommend this place. Highly professional, friendly and accommodating.
