"Cape View Clifton This exclusive hotel perched high above popular Clifton Beach sits on some of the country’s best real estate, nestled between mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Part of Rare Earth’s Beach Portfolio of properties, it’s an airy oasis, complete with a contemporary yet timeless feel.Designed like a chic beach house, rooms feature crisp whites, soft grays, and soothing taupes. Cape View Clifton isn’t the kind of hotel where guests are cloyed with attention. The staff is there when you need them (to help you plan an excursion, perhaps), but they’re mostly unobtrusive so you can do your own thing, uninterrupted—just as one would at their own beach house."

Cape View Clifton

"Give us the low-down on this place. This former beach house, high above Clifton’s famous beaches, has five suites and two self-contained apartments. What you can see from the entrance does not prepare you for what is tucked neatly into five storys below street level. Original owner Jess Latimer transformed what was a family rental property into a chic lodge with a casual beach house aesthetic. It’s now part of Rare Earth, an exclusive collection of boutique properties throughout South Africa. From the entrance you walk into a sitting room with 180-degree Atlantic Ocean views. Down a flight of stairs you come across a library, shop and small glass-fronted gym with stupendous views of Clifton’s four famous beaches - first beach is directly below the house, with fourth beach furthest away. Another flight of stairs takes you into the main living area and dining room with an open kitchen, leading onto an large deck and infinity lap pool suspended over the edge of the cliff. What are the other guests like?Young, trendy couples, especially honeymooners, who don’t need a full-service five-star hotel but love the proximity to Clifton’s beaches and Camps Bay’s nightlife. Onto the good stuff: Tell us about your room. The guest rooms all have balconies and sea views. Each room has its own configuration and unique character. Interiors are a clever curation of beach house chic: bleached wood, oversized sofas and armchairs in pale linen and cotton, cowrie shell treasure boxes and African beads and tribal sculptures. My deluxe room is more like a suite with a lounge area. It’s luxurious, large and extremely comfortable, decorated in harmony with the sky and ocean in natural fabrics in shades of white, cream and grey with vintage pieces and striking black and white photography and simple line illustrations adding interest to the walls. A king bed dressed in immaculate white linen and a sparkling clean white bathroom with subway tiles up the ante. All rooms have AC but flinging open the doors onto the balcony and allowing the salty air to waft inside is preferable. Plus, who doesn’t love the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks below? Were there any little features you're still raving about?I loved the beach bag stuffed with beach towels, ready for trips down to the sea. There’s a minibar to stock with your own drinks, and in-room tea- and coffee-making kit. How about on-site food and drinks? Worth it?Breakfast is served as a visual feast, buffet style, with dozens of fresh, cold options and hot dishes to order. There is no restaurant per se, but you can order a home-cooked meal in advance if you don’t want to go out. You can also relax on the deck with take-outs, delivered to the door. Crack open a bottle of Cape wine, and you’ll feel like you’re at one of the best restaurants in the world. The bar is operated as a honesty bar, with a lovely selection of boutique labels, craft beers and spirits. The staff: Was there anyone who really impressed you?The chefs who rustle up breakfast in the open kitchen—chatty and informative, all while flipping omelettes or timing a soft-boiled egg to perfection. Any other services or features you want to shout out?The ‘honesty’ pantry, stocked with delicious treats and snacks, and self-serve drinks, from wine and beer to soft drinks. Experienced and knowledgeable managers are quick to give their recommendations on what to do and where to go in a city with overwhelming choice. The entire property is available for rent as an exclusive-use villa Bottom line: worth it, and why? This feels a bit like having your Champagne tastes met on a beer budget—if you can secure a room, don’t hesitate. It’s Clifton, after all." - Jane Broughton

Absolutely loved my stay at this spectacular property! Cape View has been on my wish list for ages and this was the ideal time to visit. Enjoying the beauty of the beaches and seascape as well as the mountains from a hot tub way above the crowds, ice cold wine in hand, was the stuff of vacation fantasies. The rooms are spotless and beautifully appointed, the staff friendly, and Charmaine serves up a five star breakfast. Highly recommended, indeed!

Cape View Clifton is a boutique guest house that offers the most spectacular views of the ocean. Rooms: the rooms were clean, nicely furnished and very spacious. The room offered all the required amenities like a kettle, hair dryer, tv, air-conditioning, etc. The best part of the room was the breathtaking views. We made sure to be back every evening to watch the glorious sunset. Staff: the staff were very helpful and friendly. Food: there was only breakfast available. It was usually muesli and fruit and then a freshly cooked breakfast with bacon, eggs, toast, etc. Every morning there was a slightly different menu. We were a bit disappointed that there was no restaurant on site which meant we would have to go out for every lunch and dinner. Accessibility: firstly, there is very limited parking available right outside the guest house. However, you are able to park on the side of the road opposite the guest house which was okay but not ideal. Secondly, there are lots of stairs and the lift doesn’t stop on every floor - this was fine for us but may not work for everyone. Price: definitely on the expensive side. Overall: I had a wonderful stay and the views were awesome.

The best hotel we have ever stayed in! Perfect location for our first honeymoon room. We would love to come back once saved up enough money again! The staff are lovely and even put hot water bottles in the bed for the turn down service. My personal favourite thing was to be able to have breakfast in my dressing gown. Loved every minute of it x

This is an incredible hotel with a great staff and great view. Book it and go now however because they will be closing in a few months due to the property being sold to a private owner. The staff is amazing so tip them big and enjoy the wonderful views of the ocean from your room and patio

Terrible stay! The worst place we stayed in our entire 2 week trip in South Africa! We had no WiFi, was told to come back and tell the front desk about it! We did multiple times, and still nothing. Had WiFi for about 30 minutes our entire 3 night stay. Secondly, they allow people to smoke in public areas in this hotel and we could smell the woman smoking ciagarettes in our room right next to us! Thirdly, which was the icing on the Cake for us was that someone stole all of our us currency cash we had out of my wallet one night or morning while turning over the room. Literally $350 cash, took it all and did not leave one dollar to spare. Ridiculous service considering we had a junior suite and was paying $1,000 per night us currency!! After our first night of terrible WiFi and service we asked nicely if we could get out of reservations the next 2 nights and they declined. This place was classless and the worst costumer service we have ever encountered, I hardly ever leave bad reviews or reviews in general but I had to for this establishment because I do not want someone else to pay high $$$ for such a terrible experience. Also I have a copy of my invoice and time staying to show if anyone would like to see.
