16 Hidden Gems to Visit in Portugal

"Originally, the stunning marble- and granite-strewn beaches of Miramar were the site of ancient pagan worship. Specifically, the giant boulder jutting into the sea was where rituals were once performed and where the Capela do Senhor da Pedra (Chapel of the Lord of Stone) sits to this day. As part of the mass campaign to Christianize Europe during the 17th century, the hexagonal structure was constructed to ‘reclaim’ the land from the ‘heretic,’ naturalist pagans who sought enlightenment at the very same site. Visitors can scale the set of stairs leading from the sands to the altar, or take the more penitent route by scrambling up the steep boulder sides. The doors to the sanctuary are framed by two azulejo mosaics boasting of the site’s architectural import, as well as noting that Pagans had worshiped here before the chapel became ‘certainly the oldest place of worship in the region.’ Inside, three ornate altars decorated in gold leaf were erected, depicting Christ hanging from the cross. Today, the crucifix is back-lit by a (questionably-chosen) green bulb. To the chapel’s rear, a horseshoe shaped indent appears in the rock. Explanations of its origin are odd and vague, ranging from belonging to the Virgin Mary’s donkey, to having roots in D. Sebastian’s horse who was navigated poorly on a foggy day, etc. Perhaps most interestingly, starting on Trinity Sunday, an annual three-day festival commemorating the site’s Pagan past takes place in Miramar. The festivities culminate on the following Tuesday with a procession led by fully cloaked women (“witches whose identities remain unknown” according to one local) from the city center to the chapel. The chapel is worth visiting as much for its unique situation and gorgeous vistas, as its embodiment of a culture clash whose traces remain traceable to this day." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

A picturesque spot on the ocean shore — the chapel seems to rise straight out of the rock. Especially beautiful at sunset, when the light and waves create a truly magical atmosphere. It’s often very windy with sea spray, so bring a jacket you can put on if it gets uncomfortable. Easy to reach by suburban trains — the station is very close.

A wonderful place to visit! Just 30 min train from Porto, if you have extra time I would pay a visit especially during sunset. The church inside unfortunately was closed despite on Google showing open, but still worth it!

This beach is amazing, rich with minerals and stones, rock pools to explore nature, a play park for kids, amenities for a beer and coffee and ample free parking. The view and feel is second to none anywhere in the world. And if you want to see a great sunset here is where you go

Such a unique and beautiful place. I definitely recommend visiting (possible to reach by public transportation but also Uber from Porto was only 7€). The chapel opened at 14h so it was possible to visit inside. Very little people visiting. The beach surrounding is really nice and calm, and there is a path for a nice walk.

I am living in Porto And I've been traveling all over the country I am from Chile And I found Portugal so interesting It's like, you will never gonna see everything Full of culture, gastronomic wonders, architecture and much more. Thia chapel is very close to the train station Miramar From Porto you get a ticket of 2€, very cheap, and actually you can take the twain in São Bento Station in the center of Porto. It took like 20 minutes to get there, which is nothing. I personally found the way to this place very easy. It is incredible to think that this beautiful place was built here next to the sea and in the rocks. The views are amazing. There is access to chairweels until the sand and then a distance of 50 meters to get to the chapel and it's only sand. Perfect to go with kids Parking spots nearby Very walkable Restaurants nearby Biking routes Very calm town
