The 8 Best Hostels in San José, Costa Rica (Updated 2025)

"I found Capital Hostel de Ciudad to be a chill, slightly upscale option with cozy beds and lots of common space, striking a nice balance between relaxed and social. There’s an outdoor patio for BBQs and yoga, a game room with a pool table and a projector for movies, a fully equipped kitchen, and a co-living/co-working area that makes it a good choice for remote workers; the mattresses are thick and dorm beds include privacy curtains, multiple outlets, and individual fans. It’s close to Sabana Park and about a 15-minute taxi/Uber to downtown or the airport." - Matthew Kepnes

Small but cozy hostel. It is in a quiet neighborhood. It is a 10 minute drive to the central part of San Jose. You'll be submerge in the culture, a lot of restaurants, museums, parks, and mercado artesanal. The reason I liked the hostel is because it's quiet at night. I stayed in a double bed room, which was very spacious. Just note that it does not have air condition, I went the first week of September so it wasn't hot at night.

Great place to stay! Alyson and Justin are the best host! Very informative, helpful and friendly! Great price & location. Clean and cute decor. Nice outdoor seating areas. They also have shuttle services from airport which Warren was my driver. They were All very communicative throughout the entire trip! Which made me feel secure in my trip. The guests were respectful and quiet. I couldn’t have asked for better service for my first trip to Costa Rica! I will Always come back here to stay! 10/10 I recommend!

The team there was so helpful, especially Justin who we worked with the most. He was extremely knowledgeable and gave us a lot of good recommendations. The hostel is gorgeous, clean, and you can tell the design was very thoughtful. Definitely recommend if you are staying in San Jose!

Place is nice and quiet + gated area. Private room with two beds was huge and spacious. Was easy to walk to different places from the hostel if needed. Went back in December 2024

It’s probably the best place to stay in San Jose, and I’ll most likely go back if I’m in the area. It’s very chill and comfortable, and the dorm beds are of the highest standard👌 I didn't enjoy the location too much (it's safe but a bit away from the center); luckily there's a bus stop just at the corner.

Fantastic staff and very clean accommodations. They were great about answering questions about our excursions, offering suggestions for restaurants and sights seeings and even safety tips for when we were planning to go out and party. Thank you for a great stay!

This is a great place to stay in San José. The staff is very friendly and helpful, making you feel welcome from the start. The kitchen is well-equipped, perfect for cooking your own meals. The dorm rooms are comfortable, but since they are in an open area, you can hear people talking and walking by. The location is safe, with many restaurants within walking distance. They provide towels, but no breakfast. Overall, a clean and well-run hostel in a convenient spot.

We booked a private room with bathroom for two nights. The bathroom and closet area were enormous, but the shower had black mold everywhere. The mattresses were rock hard, the pillows were terrible, and we could hear the full conversations of the folks using the community workspace immediately outside our door. I have asthma and am allergic to mold so we checked out a day early and went to a far superior hotel - Hotel Colonial - instead for the same price. We asked for a refund for the second night and they took down our information, but never got in touch to give the refund. This place is probably fine for a 20 year old with a healthy spine and lungs, but would not recommend when you can stay elsewhere (with a better location) for exactly the same price as a private room.
