Hotel Capitán Suizo, Tamarindo, Costa Rica - Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Zoom out—what's the big picture? Sat right on the beach and overlooking the Pacific, this eco-conscious hotel occupies prime real estate at the tip of Tamarindo Bay (read: you can hear the surf crashing at night), but is still an easy walk into town if you feel so inclined. Look out for the resident Howler monkeys and sunbathing iguanas as you walk in. Nice. What’s the crowd like? You won't be finding Tamarindo's backpacker set here. Expect to see plenty of holidaymakers and honeymooners hanging out by the pool or drifting in and out of the on-site spa. What's the low-down on the rooms? The standard 'Superior' rooms all come with either a balcony or a terrace shrouded by drooping palm trees, and are decked out with terracotta-colored tiled floors, furniture done up in neutral tones, and luxe four-poster beds. The large, breezy beachfront bungalows, meanwhile, have unobstructed views of the Pacific, whirlpool tubs, outside showers and hammocks that serve as prime spots for napping. And what about connectivity? There's free WiFi available in the main hotel area, but don't expect a flatscreen TV in your room. This is a place to disconnect. What's the dining scene like? El Barco, the on-site restaurant, is right on the beach—a picture perfect setting come cocktail hour, when two for one drinks are offered. The menu is dubbed "seasonal fusion," but you can find everything from ceviche to mezze to burgers for lunch, and seafood-focused dishes like mahi-mahi carpaccio, tuna tartar, and grilled sea bass once dinner swings around. Any other features worth noting? The pool is secluded and shady thanks to the towering palms that line the edges, and the open-air spa resides right in the middle of the hotel's lush gardens. There's a ton of massages and treatments to choose from, too, like a Sunray Wrap to soothe your skin after a day on the beach or a hydrating Mud Lime Facial. What's the bottom line? The oceanfront setting is hard to beat—especially considering how secluded it feels compared to a lot of resorts along the bay. Bonus: an on-site surf instructor means you can live out all those Costa Rica surf dreams for real." - Lale Arikoglu

Heaven on earth, perfect gem of a hotel with wildlife and tranquil beaches. Special thanks to Angel and Brittany for making our trip special. Everyone at this hotel is friendly and helpful. This was our second trip to this resort and brought our granddaughter, she had an amazing time with the monkeys, squirrels, hermit crabs, iguanas, geckos along with the boogie boarding, surfing and relaxing in the pool. The food is amazing and we really appreciated the wonderful breakfast buffet. The staff truly make the experience at this lovely property. I hope it stays exactly as it is so I can return a 3rd time in the future.

Just wonderful. We were back for our second time, and have already booked to come back again for another week at same time next year. Capitan Suizo's quiet yet near-everything location is perfect. It is on the beach with lots of shady trees a little ways back. The sea has mild surf, the pool is a comfortable temperature, the grounds are beautiful. It has a first class restaurant, the food is sumptuous and plentiful. There are several other top restaurants less than five minute very safe walks away. The concierge and front desk seemsto be able to arrange anything with little notice. The staff are always welcoming, thoughtful, responsive, and always offering warm smiles. Tamarindo's best.

The staff at this location is phenomenal! The views are stunning, and the accommodations are wonderful. The proximity to the beach, along with the natural beauty of the surrounding plants, makes it well worth the stay. The spa is fantastic, and I can't emphasize enough how great the staff is! This was my first visit to Costa Rica, and I will definitely stay here again if I return to the area.

Such a lovely hotel. Everybody was wonderful and the rooms were so spacious and nicely decorated. The grounds were well kept and it was right on the beach. We were walking distance to the town but not close enough to hear any noise. I would definitely go back and I highly recommend Capitan Suizo

A Canadian travel agent booked us at Capitan Suizo in one of their Beachfront Bungalos for 3 days in 2024. We liked it so much we returned in 2025 for a week and have already booked for two weeks in 2026. ||I don’t know whether to highlight the location or the friendliness of the staff. Both are outstanding. It’s a ten minute walk to the heart of Tamarindo but it’s away from the crowds and noise of the town. Don’t miss their Friday night BBQ.

We were first timers to Capitan Suizo and had a lovely time. The staff is wonderful and accommodating for everything we needed. We had a room with a balcony terrace and enjoyed hearing the howler monkeys in the morning, and then making our coffee and sitting on the balcony to watch them move around the property. Hearing the "bird symphony" come to life around 6am is magical as well. ||We didn't do much other than enjoy this resort and walk on the beach which is a very nice 3.5 mile walk from one end to the other. We had two days at the pool when a howler monkey family moved through and we got some fabulous photos. I was even lucky enough to see a pair mating. We had better views of the monkeys here than anywhere else on this trip. ||Breakfast is included and good...particularly the omelet bar. We had dinner twice at the restaurant and it's solid...nothing too fancy, but it's good. Drinks are very good, and we noticed a bunch of people taking advantage of the Happy Hour drinks and lower priced snacks, which seemed nice....next time! ||When I had an issue with my back (pulled muscle) and 5 days ahead of us in La Fortuna with hiking and zip-lining I was concerned I wouldn't be able to do any of that. I talked to the concierge ladies that particular day and they arranged for a doctor to come to my room. It was a reasonable fee from the doc...and he literally saved the second half of my trip. Great service all-around. ||We enjoyed our time so much that we just booked a week next February in one of their oceanfront bungalows. Already looking forward to it!

If you are visiting Tamarindo, you MUST stay at Capitan Suizo!! Beautiful clean rooms, excellent service, incredible pool area with direct access to the beach! Breakfast every morning was delish, and happy hour cocktails at the poolside bar are not to be missed! Every single person working at the resort, from front desk, to wait staff to house keeping were so incredibly friendly and helpful. The resort is a perfect walking distance to the town but far enough away that it maintains its tranquil quiet nature! Thank you Capitan Suizo, we WILL be back!!

This hotel was nothing short of amazing. The staff, the restaurant, the grounds & the monkeys right outside our room in the trees was simply the best. Staying at a property like this where everyone knows your name & knowing how my wife likes her coffee every morning was just the best. Don't miss the Friday night BBQ!
