Hotel Capitán Suizo, Tamarindo, Costa Rica - Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Zoom out—what's the big picture? Sat right on the beach and overlooking the Pacific, this eco-conscious hotel occupies prime real estate at the tip of Tamarindo Bay (read: you can hear the surf crashing at night), but is still an easy walk into town if you feel so inclined. Look out for the resident Howler monkeys and sunbathing iguanas as you walk in. Nice. What’s the crowd like? You won't be finding Tamarindo's backpacker set here. Expect to see plenty of holidaymakers and honeymooners hanging out by the pool or drifting in and out of the on-site spa. What's the low-down on the rooms? The standard 'Superior' rooms all come with either a balcony or a terrace shrouded by drooping palm trees, and are decked out with terracotta-colored tiled floors, furniture done up in neutral tones, and luxe four-poster beds. The large, breezy beachfront bungalows, meanwhile, have unobstructed views of the Pacific, whirlpool tubs, outside showers and hammocks that serve as prime spots for napping. And what about connectivity? There's free WiFi available in the main hotel area, but don't expect a flatscreen TV in your room. This is a place to disconnect. What's the dining scene like? El Barco, the on-site restaurant, is right on the beach—a picture perfect setting come cocktail hour, when two for one drinks are offered. The menu is dubbed "seasonal fusion," but you can find everything from ceviche to mezze to burgers for lunch, and seafood-focused dishes like mahi-mahi carpaccio, tuna tartar, and grilled sea bass once dinner swings around. Any other features worth noting? The pool is secluded and shady thanks to the towering palms that line the edges, and the open-air spa resides right in the middle of the hotel's lush gardens. There's a ton of massages and treatments to choose from, too, like a Sunray Wrap to soothe your skin after a day on the beach or a hydrating Mud Lime Facial. What's the bottom line? The oceanfront setting is hard to beat—especially considering how secluded it feels compared to a lot of resorts along the bay. Bonus: an on-site surf instructor means you can live out all those Costa Rica surf dreams for real." - Lale Arikoglu

I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. It was amazing for our weeklong family stay!!. It is managed so well, the staff are so friendly and the location is perfect. Great for kids too!. You feel like you are at your own exclusive retreat, but you’re so close to Tamarindo, which is walkable for restaurants and bars and day trip activities around Guanacaste. The beach in front is perfect for beginner surf lessons. All the staff were so kind and accommodating. One of the managers Tom was very professional and friendly. Nubia was attentive at breakfast and made sure we had what we needed. Tiffany and Katherine were excellent concierges and arranged some really fun and family, friendly activities. The company they sent us on tours with had safe drivers, and we felt well looked after. From the bar staff to the waiters to the reception staff to the massage therapists, we were very impressed with the service and attention to detail. Four star hotel but five star service! Did I mention there’s lots of wildlife just hanging out? From birds to monkeys to iguanas to raccoons you don’t even have to leave the hotel to see some of Costa Rica’s famous wildlife. And you can play soccer with the staff on the beach on Thursdays! So fun. We will definitely try and come back and will be recommending to all of our friends and family!!

All I have to say is that we cannot wait to come back here again and again and again! The location is perfect - a 10 minute walk from the activities of Tamarindo but a perfectly quiet and lovely beach area. The pool was divine. The service staff from check in to check out and everything in between exceeded expectations. We had lots of fun and laughs with the bar and restaurant staff. The included breakfast was amazing - you haven't had pineapple until you've had it in Costa Rica. And the animal friends were over the top - how amazing to stay in a place with howler monkeys, igaunas, parakeets, and so much more! ||This is literally one of the best hotels we have ever stayed at.

We had a great stay for two nights at the end of a tour through Costa Rica. A wonderful superior room with private terrace. The pool is great and so is the direct access to the beach. We had both breakfast and dinners outside under the trees with views on the beach, perfect! A nice choice of meals at decent prices. Even music in the evening. The garden is also beautiful and well maintained. Overall a great experience 🤩

This vibe may not be for you if you don't love wildlife, cats, dogs, and monkey poo. We loved it here but you should be aware. Tom and Jose Pablo were fabulous and we enjoyed their company very much. I have to say the city of Tamarindo is somewhat stressful with all the cars and people. It can be overwhelming. Inside the hotel you have direct access to the beach and tons of games to play with the family. They often put on events. We were here only 3 days and they had a band come and play Christmas songs with a BBQ buffet and they had a staff soccer game. 😁Make sure to get some banana bread in the free breakfast in the morning. It's Soo good. But they have plenty of options for the buffet. We saw howler monkeys, bluejay, hawks, and very cool looking squirrels.

Absolutely fantastic boutique hotel. Definitely the highlight of our stay in Costa Rica. The hotel is great, the food is great, the beach is just amazing and the staff is exceptional: welcoming, warm and attentive. Special shout out to Nubia, Maricela and Max. Will definitely come back. Very highly recommended.

My wife and I have stayed at this amazing property several times and have reservations to return in February. It is an oasis of calm and tranquility in Tamarindo which, although great, is neither. The grounds are lush and immaculate and the rooms are beautiful. What sets this place apart is the staff. Every single person might be the friendliest person you’ve ever encountered. And the key is that they are genuinely friendly- not fake or obsequious. We highly recommend a stay.

We had a fantastic vacation at this property. We had a beachfront room that was huge and spotless. There was a living area which led to a veranda with outdoor seating and a hot tub. The bed was comfortable and there were always plenty of towels. The beach was just steps away. The town is a short walking distance from the property and can be accessed by the road or beach. We were told that it’s safer to go by the road at night. Kaylor at the bar made delicious cocktails and always had a smile. Breakfast was included and there was a decent assortment or items as well as a chef making omelets. We were told that there were some howler monkeys around the property, but we didn’t see any. We did see some further down the road though. I had a massage at the spa. Marta was amazing! The hotel doesn’t have any evening bands but we entertained ourselves in town. I would go back in a heartbeat!

My SIL and I just returned from an 8-night stay at Capitán Suizo and oh my goodness, what a magical, unparalleled experience it was. CS is an eco-resort that practices sustainability and oneness with nature in ways that exceeded our expectations. The animals (a rescue raccoon named Lluvia, five cats, dogs, and all the wild animals such as howler monkeys, iguanas, squirrels, birds) are all treated with respect and a posture of awe and wonder. I asked the staff if they thought seeing the monkeys was old hat, and they all replied that they never tire of seeing them and appreciating them. Our room (Superior Balcony) was spacious with all the amenities you need, and with a private view that made us feel like we were in our own treehouse. The restaurant was delicious (complimentary breakfast and an incredible lunch and dinner menu) and they accommodated my vegan diet without a flinch. In fact, every morning, one of our favorite staff, Nubia, greeted me by name and said, “¡Buenos dias! ¿Te gustaría panqueques veganos?” Yes, they made me vegan pancakes to order whenever I wanted them. One thing that could be an improvement on the vegan options would be 1-2 vegan dessert options. Currently, there are none. We had massages at the spa and they were top notch. The concierge, Katherine, helped us book a private yoga class on the beach which was stellar. And the staff… there aren’t enough words to describe the level of hospitality they offered. Each person we encountered from the front desk to housekeeping to the restaurant servers to maintenance, to the general manager herself, was warm, personable, and made us feel like family. Truly, it felt like we were saying goodbye to genuine friends on our last day and Nubia even got misty-eyed saying she hates saying goodbye but can’t wait to have us back. I have never experienced such a level of care and authenticity as I did at Capitán Suizo. You can see how much everyone loves to work there. Several of them told us, “we have good bosses” and this is evidenced by the trip they all took to Switzerland last year (check out their website for the video and more info) and how every week they gather on the beach for a staff soccer game (guests are invited to join in). It is truly a magical place with an understated elegance that combines extraordinary hospitality with the warmth of family and a love of nature. Pura Vida at its best. Special shoutouts to the following staff who made our stay a memory to last a lifetime: Nubia, Max, Alexander, Cristobal, Argenis, Raul, Katherine, Wilfredo, Marisela, and Helen. ¡Te extrañaremos!
