I struggled with this review. For the price, something just seemed off. The food was good. Rather tasty, in fact. We all mostly enjoyed our meals. But, for example, my daughter wanted the chicken in her pasta dish on the side yet it still came out smothered in sauce. Why? They fixed it but it took a while. The fried oysters had a side of loaded fries. The fries were extra brown and the cheese was burnt... I didn't even want to take a picture of the dish. But the oysters were great. Our one adult beverage at the table was forgotten about for a while. At the end we actually wanted dessert (celebrating a birthday) but I was surprisingly given the check without even a mention. I had to say we wanted dessert. If these were $10 entrees I'd just roll with it. But these were much more than that.

First time eating at this restaurant and have a love/hate relationship with it. We were seated quickly and the server took our drink order just as quickly. The service was very good, but the food was lacking. My wife and I travel a lot and whenever we see Shrimp n' Grits on the menu, we are always excited to try it. The list price was pretty high and we were more than happy to pay it until the server told us the shrimp are NOT cleaned of their veins when we asked. How is a restaurant this expensive not clean their shrimp before cooking??!?! We decided not to order the Shrimp n' Grits. I ordered the ribeye steak at medium temp and it was slightly overcooked. Was too scared to send it back after waiting so long to get it. Again, at such a high price point, it should have been done correctly! My wife decided on a few small apps to be her dinner and they were all pretty great with the star of the evening being the Clam Chowder. The food was o.k., the service was good, and the price points were too high for the lack of quality of the food. Unclean shrimp and over cooked steak is what sank this dinning experience for us. Do better Captain Ratty's.

I was glad they had outside seating cause it really nice day to eat outside. * small con. in the inside part their was a slight smell off wet rags . like water thats been dirty . IDK but it was a pleasent eat regardless

With a lot of competition in downtown New Bern you have to be good to survive. This is a very nice place to eat. We were met at the door by a friendly guy who walked us to the hostess desk, then we were escorted to a table. Our waiter came right away and took our drink order. For appetizers, We got tuna guac, which has small chunks of sushi-like tuna in guacamole and fresh chips. We also shared fried green tomatoes. Both dishes were a step above what we're used to. I like to try the shrimp and grits wherever I go, just to see how many ways it can be prepared. Here, it was a broth over some of the creamiest grits I've ever had, and lots of fresh tasting shrimp. My wife got oysters with arugula. My daughter got crab cakes. It was all delicious and we were too full to even consider dessert. Oh yeah, dinner includes a salad bar which has a selection of veggies to choose from, as well as some soups.

Stopped in for breakfast this morning and had the tacos. They tasted pretty good, the home fries were awesome. The service was friendly and pretty quick. The price was kinda high for two tacos. The avocado was an upcharge.

Considering the reviews, I wanted to give this place a try. First of all, despite the restaurant's claim to be a seafood restaurant, the menu was not at all what I had expected. I guess I had hoped for more choices. The Choose Three Seafood Basket, which costs $19.95, is the only dish I want to focus on. It included a tiny bowl with perhaps five oysters in it and two skewers each holding four little scallops and five medium-sized shrimp. It also comes with one side, which I decided to be the bland coleslaw. The fact that this is all I received for $20 astonished me when it first came out. It should have been embarrassing for the chef and restaurant owners to serve this food. I've had both good and bad seafood over the course of my life, but this was by far the worst. The shrimp was very overcooked and the oysters were also terrible. Not to mention, the $20 they charge you is not at all reasonable. The onion rings that someone else with me ordered and the water were the best parts of the entire meal. Extremely disappointing for a location that calls itself a seafood restaurant.

Google
Fresh Fish and Great Ambience. The food is very fresh, ate here everyday while on vacation. The fish was lightly battered-more fish than bread. The salad had the right blend of lettuce and ingredients along a perfect balsamic vinegar dressing. Riley the server was very professional and nice. While waiting for my meal, the restaurant played "Louis Armstrong" and other classic jazz music, very nostalgic. Intially walked in by mistake, but so glad I found this restaurant. Oh, how I miss the food here! However, I am very far away.

Google
The food is delicious and the manager is fantastic. The atmosphere is warm. The hostess was super friendly. It was quite crowded at lunch so the service was probably slower than normal. I would return and I recommend putting this place on your must visit list. We had a positive experience.

Yelp
Captain Ratty's is a good place to dine in Downtown New Bern. They have inside and outside seating depending on what you prefer. I liked the large menu and the reasonable prices. My waitress was on top of things and very patient with a customer at a nearby table who was struggling to get the words he needed to order. I had the filet mignon with baked potato and did a lava cake for dessert. I enjoyed my meal and would return here again.

Raymond B.

Yelp
BTW, the staff told me this place is changing names - possibly Buzzys Chophouse. The inside is a little quaint on the one side by the bar but the main entrance is a bit confusing since they had a salad-ish bar behind the divider. The main room had a lot of room and good bar seating. I read the reviews and wanted some seafood and the fish and chips caught my eyes. I was also going to try the clam chowder but the last two reviews were not appealing so I asked the waitress other options. I was offered the Tomato Bisque soup which was very good . Very creamy and tomatoey. For the main course I changed from the fish and chips to The Bounty, and unfortunately it was NOT. The meal was fried with French Fries and Cole slaw. I mentioned I didn't like coleslaw so they left it off but didn't offer any as a substitute or knock the soup price off. The meal came with 5, average sized shrimp with the tails off, what was supposed to be scallops, and small fried oysters. The fries were better than the oysters and scallops, and I believe the scallops were imitation because they did not have any grain when I cut them. I wasn't asked if I wanted tarter or cocktail sauce and just got tarter. I had to chase down the waitress for water since I didn't want anything else. I'm not sure this would make me a return trip but every place is worth a try

Chavis B.

Yelp
Had a club meeting here very nice good view rooftop lounging, food was great also, downtown scenery

Ray K.

Yelp
Poor service. Sunday brunch was all Dried out foods and I was never asked if I wanted a refill for my coffee until I was getting ready to leave

Jimmy S.

Yelp
10-3-24. Service was good, waitress was friendly and attentive. Food was only ok at best but the baked potatoes had been cooked very early in the day and were only barely warm. $24.99 for catch of the day (Salmon) was over priced when you got a small piece of fish and one side only. We will not be returning

Chris B.

Yelp
The service was friendly and the atmosphere was very original for a local eatery. I tried the salmon which was slightly over glazed and over seared. However it was still a good meal. I'd recommend trying out the menu. The calamari portion was great as an appetizer. I did overhear that you cannot get a steak cooked medium which did and didn't concern me, medium-well is my go to anyway I'd recommend trying them out.

Elissa H.

Yelp
Had to ask to be seated as sign was up wait, but no one was at the host station. Wait for server was long. When food arrived (after another wait) had to for missing side. On a good note, Grilled Shrimp was probably best I had this trip! Maybe just caught them on a bad day today.

Bryan M.

Yelp
Food was good. Service was better than food though. Salmon was extremely small portioned. Filet was adequate, properly cooked. Mashed Potato underneath was very dry. Requested beer had run out-Modelo. Ambience was enjoyable not too crowded.

Evelyn D.

Yelp
LOOOVE this place for brunch! Service is always good, servers are always on it. Food is always really good, and they always have mimosas!!!

Jeanette C.

Yelp
Wow! I haven't ate at Captain Ratty's for several months since I moved out of state. I love the addition of a Salad Bar! They also offer a Brunch Buffet on Saturdays and Sundays. I will have to try that before I leave. Captain Ratty's has been one of my fave restaurants in Downtown New Bern. Soooo glad it's still running after all these years. For this particular visit, I came to support and honor the McDaniels family as they're mourning their son, Jordan McDaniels, who was a chef here. May he RIP!

Bill O.

Yelp
Just finished lunch with my lovely wife. The food was excellent. I had a chicken sandwich and fries. The fries were awesome as they were smoking hot and had that garlicky taste, and the chicken was very good. My wife had the grilled Tuna, which she thought was very good. Ryleigh, our server, was outstanding. Stopped by to check on quality of the food, while updating the drinks. Very courteous and always smiling. The overall place was very clean and well maintained. The people working there were nice and you felt comfortable being around them. I really enjoyed my meal and overall experience.

Bonni M.

Yelp
We chose this place because it seemed like one of the few restaurants open on Mondays. Turned out to be wonderful! Friendly staff from the moment we walked in. I wish I could remember our waiter's name because he was great. He answered all our questions with patience, was very helpful. The fried oysters and sweet potato fries were the best I have ever had! Would love to go back but we may never get to this area again. Ambiance was casual but had white table cloths- classy!

Becky S.

Yelp
Ratty's was just ok. My fried tomatoes caprese style were weird. My husband's shrimp and grits were over sauced and the shrimp were rubbery. Service was fine and we liked sitting in the window.

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
Food was good. Our server, a young lady whose name escapes me, was delightful. She was new, but very good. Cute blonde who was going to school to be a pilot. Nice place.

Brenda J.

Yelp
All the seafood was bland in taste and garlic potato was not garlicky and pretty solid in shape. Not fluffy. Salad bar was very fresh and pretty good. Service was just alright, didn't check our drinks enough. Owner was very friendly and was helpful to his staff because they got busy with two floors.

John S.

Yelp
Great friendly service up top on balcony provided a great view. The food was also nice a good evening out. I really enjoyed the mussels

Dee D.

Yelp
We came across the restaurant while walking. Our food came out in a timely manner. Our waitress was friendly, helpful and attentive. Kids loved their grilled cheese and popcorn shrimps. Sweet potato fries were the best. I loved my shrimp and grits and my husband enjoyed his cheesesteak. Although everything was tasty I wish the food is a little less salty and clam chowder was not something to rave about. It had a sour taste which I still try to figure out if it was something wrong it the soup or it was their specialty. Overall, it was good to try.

Lisa A.

Yelp
We stopped in for a drink while waiting to meet up with family for dinner (at another location). The bar area was SMALL. They had 4-5 beers on tap and very basic liquors for mixed drinks. The place seemed quite old and needs a lot of updating. Their prices seem high for what you get (based on what I saw coming out of the kitchen). It was fine for a drop in drink but I wouldn't go back and I don't think I'd go for dinner. There are nicer places within walking distance. This place needs a major update if it wants to compete with the surrounding businesses.

Laiza H.

Yelp
I visited this restaurant after reading other people's reviews on Yelp. I was looking for fish and chips while I was in New Bern and I saw some people recommending it. We sat at the bar and I ordered Fish and Chips and it also came with coleslaw. After about 15 min they brought me my food and it was one of the tastiest fish I have ever had. The server/bartender knew that my husband and I were sharing food so he gave us two plates and each plate had a piece of the fish and some fries so we didn't have to move food around, very good! The fish was delicious, herby and not fishy at all. So far one of my favorite fish and chips! I was so good that I didn't even need the tartar sauce, because the herby taste was great. The fries were also very good and tasty! I usually don't like coleslaw but this was a game changer! The mayo that they used for their coleslaw was very delicious! I'm definitely coming back for the fish and chips.

Sabrina A.

Yelp
We got there and sat down by the front. It was FREEZING. We asked to move to a different table in the back, so they did that. Once we sat down, it took me to get a waitress to ask where our waitress was at ? We've been sitting for over 10-15 mins. Just to find out, it was a lack of communication on their end and they didn't know who was taking our table. Once everything was situated, we ordered our appetizer. We got the calamari and the mussels. SALTY. We had to ask for lemon to help balance the saltiness and the taste of strong garlic. Then we ordered our food. I was hoping that this would be a hit from the reviews. We got the seafood boil, shrimp scampi & the fried seafood. SALTY. I was highly disappointed. I understand to use a little salt here and there but if that's all I'm tasting, change the chef. I had to drink like 10 cups of water. The manager was cool and understood my problems. She helped me out and took what I said into consideration although she stopped me mid-talking ‍ The only good thing I got was the clam chowder. Nothing compared to MA clam chowder but it was not salty like the broth that they use for almost all seafood dishes. Should've order a burger.

Suzy D.

Yelp
Might be the best fried fish I've ever had. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meals, burgers were cooked perfectly and scampi was fresh and flavorful.

M J.

Yelp
First time here, got beef tips, it was stew meat and no red wine Demi it was brown gravy....my other dining friends got shrimp and grits with weird sausage chunks rubber shrimp, and salt y salty salty.....our waiter Jonn what a prize, acted like he was doing us a favor to wait on us, asked for some fries and garlic bread and it came like 10-15 minutes later and we were informed we had ordered our food before and it was a full restaurant what did we expect on the wait. Didn't care for that.

Deborah B.

Yelp
Great fish and chips! Especially love the fries with ranch dressing. Variety of drinks and alcoholic beverages. Friendly service and a kind wait staff!

Jim F.

Yelp
I had the Low Country Boil, shrimp , clams & mussels, and it was delicious!!! My SO had the shrimp and grits and it was amazing as well!!

Philip C.

Yelp
Great food just small sitting area so your wait time will be a little bit. But it's a nice ambiance

Jeff S.

Yelp
Food is always great. Love their burgers. Excellent servers - arguably the best downtown - noise can sometimes be elevated. Taking all this in, I would go nowhere else for steamed seafood downtown.

PS P.

Yelp
Waited over 50 minutes for food that tasted like a lean cuisine meal. This used to be a great place to eat. So sad.

Harry O.

Yelp
We went here occasionally prior to the covid plandemic and loved everything about it. We went this past Sunday and oh my how things have changed. Interior no longer had that fishermans appearance or ambiance. In fact quite the opposite. Prices went up and food quality went down. One or the other but not both. As an example we ordered coleslaw with our meal. We got our food and the coleslaw was about 2 tablespoons each in a condiment cup. We also got margaritas. Skinny little glasses instead of the proper margarita glasses and, $10.00 each!? I used to love their sweet potato fries. They used to be crisp and flavorful. Now, bland and soggy. The seafood was mediocre as well. Felt more like a cafeteria than a seafood restaurant. I know, change is inevitable but, we won't be returning.

Iris C.

Yelp
We decided to try Captain Ratty's for dinner on our anniversary. it was not crowded and we were seated immediately and then....nothing. There were plenty of servers around, however, ignored us for over 10 minutes. When parties arriving after us were seated and waited on we inquired and were told that these parties were in a different section, I.e. had a different waiter. A little hard to believe when one table was directly next to us but ok. Someone finally offered to get our waitress, who was in the back apparently. She came out and promptly started waiting on yet another table. At that point we got up, told the front desk that we were leaving because we apparently were being denied service. We went to The Chelsea instead, had wonderful service and a great meal. I will never again set foot into Captain Ratty's and will advise my friends accordingly.

Deb G.

Yelp
Steak was served with fries on top. I have never encountered such an odd plating that was not fast food. Seafood was not fresh. Quality has decreased over the years. The server was great.

Sandra G.

Yelp
Sunday afternoon we took a 3 hour ride to New Bern from Sandbridge Va. We love the quaintness of this small town. We found a Restaurant that we had walked by before and decided to try it. We ordered Clam Chowder that was a C+, but it was salty and tasted like there was bacon fat in it . The food was atrocious! The salad bar for $4.95 added to your entree. It was not appetizing in appearance. You had to reach over everything to get a scoop of olives, no beets were left and everything was very picked over. I came back to find my sirloin tips for $21.99 sitting. Not even warm. There was a layer of a coating over the gravy like it had been sitting for a while. The meat was stew meat with grizzle, not sirloin tips. What was supposed to be a Demi glaze was a flour based meat gravy. It was horrible, I tried to eat one piece and it made me sick to my stomach. My husband had the same only over mashed potatoes and he tried to see if eating it on the dry potatoes would help but it didn't. He told me he forced it down. The waitress tried to serve us the wrong things 2-3 times. She never checked if we wanted a refill on coffee which he didn't finish, or if there was something wrong since I only ate one bite out of my entree. When they did ask I told them it was bad and they gave me $5.95 off a $21.99 meal that I barely touched. The only thing that was good was my Apple hard cider, it really smelled like golden apples. 2 stars is really too good for this place. I will never enter that establishment again. When we were walking out, a couple asked how it was and my husband couldn't help but tell them no don't go there. It was a total waste of $75.00 including tip.

Johnny M.

Yelp
I just recently moved into town and I was looking for a nice restaurant to have dinner. I ended up on the corner of Middle St. And boom, Captain Ratty's. Service was very quick and on point despite having a large group the night we visited. Food was great with the exception that the food was a little too salty. The spices and salt took over the taste of the shrimp and grits, but it was still a very great plate. I would recommend to order some bread on the side to balance out the saltiness and the texture. The grits had a thick consistency and was blended with cheese. Nice touch. The ambience was a little dead due to no music in the background but still a good time. Partially could be because it was Friday night and multiple restaurants here in New Bern do dining on the street, outside. Additionally, there was an event going on named mum-feast. Nice little restaurant in New Bern downtown would definitely come back.

Ron C.

Yelp
I see some of the reviews here and I don't get it. My experience here was just fine. Captain Ratty's, as noted by others, is a low-key seafood establishment. It provides fine service, good seafood prepared to order, and outdoor seating that's covered should it rain. I arrived here after flying all day from the west coast. Needless to say, I was hungry and wanted decent food. Captain Ratty's hit all the marks with my fish and chips. And the beer went down well, too! No problems at all!

Genna G.

Yelp
I come here every Saturday morning with my 2 year old after going to the farmers market and I have really grown to like this restaurant. The staff goes out of their way to be friendly with us and my son just loves it! The first few times we went, we would get full breakfasts but the kitchen took anywhere from 20-40 minutes to get it out and we never finished it anyway so now I just order sides that I know are already being made for their all-you-can-eat buffet. They do get crowded for breakfast so keep that in mind but I would never go to bakers kitchen instead of here. The prices are great and the service from the host stand to back of the house is the friendliest around!

Lachelle S.

Yelp
I ride my bike into town today. Hoping to sit on that attractive rooftop terrace to have a brew and a burger. I was met at the door by a confused young girl who said they don't have anybody to serve me up there. At noon, on a Saturday. I had my bike I asked if I could bring it in to there doorway, and a third person appeared to tell me I cannot. I have a cute, pink beach cruiser that would've been an attractive addition to their otherwise boring entry. I was planning on spending an hour or two up there. Inviting friends. Rooftop dining overlooking Newbern Harborside. So... Nope that cute rooftop dining area has no servers. And don't think about leaving your bike there or on the street anywhere. Nowhere to lock it up. I won't be back. I had an excellent burger at Michaels pub and patio just down the street.

Domonique J.

Yelp
Food was great! Service was wonderful the bartender was awesome she made a a great little mango tequila mix drink that was delicious. I had the tuna guac and the cannon shrimp tacos amazing the tuna guac was the appetizer of my dream definitely deserve 5 stars

Suzanne H.

Yelp
If you're patient, they'll bring deliciousness to your table! Dine inside or outside. Dad had their burger, and I had their world famous crab cake sandwich. Nothing but crab in the sandwich...ok maybe a smidge of breading to hold it together. Burger was cooked perfectly and crab was delicious on its own. Like most restaurants in these unprecedented times, staffing was light and service was slow during lunch on a Friday. That's my only reason for 4 stars instead of 5, because the food was worthy of 5 stars. Definitely worth visiting again!

Minas C.

Yelp
I had gone to New Bern with a list of restaurants that had been recommended. Ratty's wasn't on it, but it was a few steps away from a noisy recommended restaurant with a long wait. We opted to eat at Ratty's and it was a good decision. We were greeted quickly and seated in the smallish, bricked-walled dining room with a bar along one side. It was nicely quiet, a positive change from the noise of the other restaurant. I would have like more dining options, but that wasn't enough of a problem to reduce the rating. I had the captain's burger with sweet potato fries and my dining partner had the Bounty (fried oysters, shrimp & scallops). Both were plentiful and delicious. Several staff came by during the meal to be sure we had everything we needed and were enjoying our meal. I'd recommended Ratty's without hesitation.

Mac M.

Yelp
Always good, always reliable, great seafood. Love eating on the rooftop when it's open. Service is friendly and prices are reasonable.

Sam E.

Yelp
Food was good as usual, but today for some reason it felt like it was 30 degrees in there. Not sure why they had it so cold , it was uncomfortable . When I mentioned it twice once to the waitress and once to the host it was silence. Made me think because of the floatilla event going on they wanted to turn tables faster

Aymee V.

Yelp
Never as good as the first time..Like the song by Sade. Let me start by saying that This place was one of our favorites when we first moved to town a few months ago so I am seriously not trying to hate but what a plummet in standards. We have been here numerous times since our first experience in March of this year which was a spectacular dinner. I'm sorry to report that they have managed to consistently disappoint over the past four to five visits. We are done with Captain Ratty's. We came here for brunch yesterday and requested a table for two. We were promptly ushered upstairs into a small dining area with a buffet set up. There was an array of standard breakfast foods in chafing dishes such as bacon, sausage, home fries, french toast biscuits and gravy. There was also an omelette station manned by a young person who was at the far end of the room making omelettes upon request. All of my breakfast items ( bacon, sausage, home fries and French toast) were cold. Not lukewarm.. Cold. There was no syrup readily available. When we requested it was given to us in a sloppy, sticky plastic container. The fruit was not prepared properly ( the pineapple) and fruit was not fresh ( strawberries were bruised and old) I will say that the blueberries were rather sweet, so that was the high point. My husband had an omelette which was okay as it was not cooked to death and I ordered one as well, after I gave up on my other food. My omelette was not seasoned well and cheese , which I did not request was added. I will note that the young gentleman who made it did put in notable effort, he just needs more training. I'll end with the biggest disappointment which was how incredibly greasy all of the food was and the "gravy" for the biscuits was Bernaise sauce.. Come on y'all as we say in the South. Did you think we wouldn't notice? That was insane. The Bernaise was cold and bland just like everything else. With the exception of the home fries, which may have been phenomenal of fresh and hot, given those strings of caramelized onions The bottom line is.. At first we were charmed. We thought this place was great and kept giving it a chance but every time we have been back ( this is our fifth or sixth) it keeps going downhill. On a positive note the servers are very polite and pleasant. The hosts and hostesses are as well, but sadly that is not enough to bring us back. I hope someone in management takes notice and does something to raise their standards once again. Until then it's goodbye for now.

Ne J.

Yelp
There were 8 of us during the 2023 Christmas holiday and we all were very disappointed with the food. Three of us ordered Filet Mignon and were served Ribeye that was well done & cold. One order the burger Med and he was served well done & tough burger. He was unable to eat it. Room was quite cold and many people had their coats over their legs. We all said, we will never return to Capt Ratty's again. We spent a lot of money for this dinner and we truly expected high quality food to be served to us all.

Stephen Z.

Yelp
Great fried oysters. Have been there many times and never disappointed. Very friendly staff.

K O.

Yelp
I am rating the brunch buffet and nothing else. This is not what I remember from two or three years ago. I came in shortly after they started it and it was really good. If I had what I did today, I would not have come back. I'm sorry they could not keep up the quality, but I understand times have changed.

April R.

Yelp
Delicious cannonball shrimp and fried oysters. My husband enjoyed the salad bar, and he said the shrimp bisque and gumbo were fantastic. Our server, Sheena was so attentive. We'll be back!

Belen L.

Yelp
I really don't know how this restaurant has 4 stars. Maybe it was an off day but this place was honestly a huge let down. First, the two hostess' seemed frazzled and disorganized with their seating and didn't inform us on wait times and just took our names and number, luckily we got sat fairly fast and granted it seemed slightly busy but nothing crazy. Second, i ordered a lavender lemonade cocktail and it tasted like straight Gin with a hint of lavender and our waiter seemed a bit irritated when i asked for it to be returned. My husband glass was also dirty with towel fuzzies all over. We thought maybe the food will make up for it but yet again our waiter seemed a bit fed up when we asked for our utensils since we didn't get any and for condiments. We were handed 2 smalls cups of (1) ketchup and (1) tartar to share and that was it. The seafood honestly wasn't the best and was really underwhelming for what we were hoping for. I've never written a review but this place was bad enough for me to finally write one. Spend the money at Persimmons.

Peggy A.

Yelp
The food was excellent. We had a great server who was attentive, but not overbearing, and congenial. Ambiance could use a little work but good place to eat and doesn't empty your wallet!

W W B.

Yelp
We dropped in for lunch, oysters and shrimp basket. The oysters were tainted, and the waitress just brushed it off.

Priscilla D.

Yelp
Mediocre at best Ceasar salad was some Romain with store bought generic croutons, the dollar tree wine glasses with bad quality old wine should be served. The fried haddock doesn't look like the ones posted that looked hand breaded in a light crispy tempura like coating on their website photos from the chefs page. These were pre frozen & crumb like coated & then what appeared to be baked. I don't need the extra calories from oil, but warmed frozen pre breaded fish wasn't what they had in photos. It was just bad. The fries came from a frozen bag. Honestly it is most likely from Walmart freezer section. It doesn't even seem like typical food service truck delivered bar food. This is really poor quality. The best part was the Cole slaw, It at least seemed fresh not really tart & creamy & sweet but at least it was cold . The shrimp scampi was not even good. I think the shrimp could be called previously frozen pre cooked topped on some pasta it wasn't made with fresh garlic & some wine or even touched with some parley it was pasta with what seemed like garlic juice & margarine. The other Caesar salads were the same. It was served by a rude guy that was not very welcoming. There was a couple of hillbillies seated beside us in their overalls & beard , showered not likely. They were having some public personal issues & she ended up dumping her plate in a styrofoam clam shell container you know the cheap ones that leak. That's their meal , haha , it couldn't get much worse & then it becomes old to go & cold bad food to begin with. God I wanted to take my grown children out to dinner with my husband & myself in the historical quant picturesque town of New Bern since I'm from the outer banks , down east, but we live in Atlanta Ga & one daughter is from Philly now after each traveling for 2 days straight to meet up for a meal. This was just really sad mediocre warmed frozen mass produced bad quality food. It was disappointing & sad. How this is what the people think is worthy of 4 out of 5 stars is truly sad. It is Sad if this is what you are offered as a good meal. Honestly outback would have been better at least there is a standard of quality & you know what you'd be served. You cannot say it was an off night when the food was the bad part of the experience & not just one persons but even the wine served was bad. Maybe they don't get many that drinks a glass of wine with what should have been a nice meal out together after being apart & having traveled all day from all different areas. This was just bad. There is some really high quality pub bar food places with in house made dressings & hand breaded crispy hot boars head brand chicken tenders served with fresh made onion strings (for $4 Less than this was )in Atlanta & many other places less than this frozen warmed poor quality fish & bagged frozen fries . I get there are fewer options even available locally in New Bern why to do excellent when they can serve something like this with no effort & get away with it. I wish I could catch this on Gordon Ramsey 24 hours to hell & back episode . Or restaurant rescue, or kitchen nightmares. Until then I won't be back. I'm sure when this place opened it had to have been better then something it is now. Something had to have happened & so they no longer give a crap & just started serving crap & this is now what's acceptable. Sorry but this isn't said to be mean it is the truth. Now to the waiter Zachary with some attitude issues " like he just didn't want to be here " told us there was only a grouper special , but the other waitress waiting on a table beside ours started offering all sorts of options. Like Ahi tuna & a salad bar & soups . We even motioned for Zachary to come & we asked him " do you have ahi tuna special ?" The woman at the table that was just offered that special perked up when she heard my husband ask Zachary . I think he knew he had been caught as a slacking waiter & flat out lied ! He said "well we did have some but it all sold out." & he turned & walked off quickly to avoid eye contact . The woman at the Ahi tuna table just shook her head in disbelief. It is pretty unbelievable when the waiter won't even offer the menu specials. Like I said if this is a good restaurant & this is considered good food in this area, then that is just a sad excuse for a night out with family. I'm just really glad I can cook much better than the chef & care about the experience of those I feed & serve. At least put some fresh garnish of parsley on your sad food. If you are still reading I would obviously say please find another place if you want a good memory from a meal out in New Bern.
