In Baden-Baden, Learning to Heal in the Style of German Aristocrats

"Caracalla, the 43,000 square-foot modern bathhouse built on top of the city’s tourable Roman bath ruins, features thermal baths and saunas. Visitors can enjoy warm water under rock grottoes, an outdoor hot tub, and a forest sauna. The bathhouse is known for its relaxing atmosphere and health benefits."

The spa has a beautiful setting with both indoor and outdoor pools that look great. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end for me. The hygiene throughout the spa is really poor. The bathrooms in the spa area smell strongly of urine and feel damp and neglected. The whole place is way too moist, including the locker rooms, where I also noticed rubbish on the floor and human hairs everywhere. It gave a very unclean impression and made it hard to relax. The solarium beds are dirty and clearly not taken care of. For a wellness facility, regular and thorough cleaning should be a priority—but here, it clearly isn’t. The sauna area is also outdated. While the wooden chalets outside look nice, everything inside feels old and run-down. Overall, the spa looks good at first glance, but once you actually use the facilities, it’s clear that cleanliness and maintenance are being ignored. This needs urgent attention.

Very nice experience at the Spa. We went 2 hours in the evening. We took tickets only for Spa area and was very relaxing, the pool are clean and the water was very good temperature. Also nice wet sauna inside the spa.

We stopped on our way to Frankfurt for three hours. Three hours goes fast with all the great things that are here. We were greeted by the front desk and everything was explained. We rented towels and were shown how the changing area and lockers work. We then had a nice lunch in the restaurant and started exploring the pools on the main level. Great pools both inside and outside. It was a bit crowded and loud, but that is what I would expect on a holiday weekend. My wife stayed in the lower level pools the whole time, but I had purchased access to the sauna level so I spent about 90 minutes up there. Great selection of saunas in various temperatures and themes. Nice cool down options from showers to plunge pools to outdoor areas. I tried several saunas and even got to enjoy the Aufgaus. Yes, you must be naked in the sauna area, but it is not at all uncomfortable. Try it and find out for yourself how great it is. I would have liked a longer visit, but we wanted to finish our trip to Frankfurt.

The thermal baths offer a variety of pools, hydro jets, aromatherapy, indoor and outdoor jacuzzis, hot and cold water pools, and red light treatments. The showers are clean, and the staff is friendly and speaks good English. However, it’s crowded, with some people hogging the outdoor jacuzzis, limiting access for others. Too many teenagers are overly affectionate in the pools, showing little awareness of public behavior. It’s also quite noisy. Overall: Very good 👍

Second floor of Sauna is amazing, specially the one of 95 degrees. By the way, the front desk is very kind and nice

Excellent place to relax. The pools are clean. The changing rooms and lockers make getting in and out quick. The outside pools are delightful. You pay for either 2 hours 3 hours or all day.

I liked Caracalla Spa but if I came back to Baden-Baden, it's Friedrichsbad I'd go to. Caracalla is more along the lines of a waterpark than a spa - it's got a big warm round pool with jets at all heights plus raised bubbling pools, there are two outdoor pools with more jets and waterfalls and hot tubs in the cooler one, there's a steam room, a pair of hot and cold plunge pools and a full-on cafe/restaurant and lots of sunloungers. Upstairs is the textile-free sauna area which somehow felt a bit uninspiring, but then I'm not a huge fan of sitting around feeling too hot - there are two outdoor saunas in log cabins which are really hot and you're going to want your pool shoes to run out to them, as well as a towel to sit on. Inside are some more conventional saunas, one of them with lights, scents and music. There's plenty to keep you busy in the clothed area - I spent somewhere around four hours mostly going backwards and forwards between the hot plunge pool and the outdoor pools with the occasional trip back to the main pool to enjoy the massage jets. Wouldn't make a trip to Baden-Baden deliberately to go to Caracalla Spa but if I was in the area, no doubt I'd find myself back here in the evening.

Yelp
I had a horrible experience at this place. Beware! As I was leaving a gentleman from the US was being accused of taking something/not getting refunded for his towel because he did not have a receipt. Next it was my turn to check out... the woman at the check out desk aggressively kept saying I owed 3.50 for a lemon... and accusing my son of having a lemon??? We are wondering what a lemon is (apparently it's a drink) then accused me going to sauna... we never stepped foot in a spa and never had this so called lemon... it was a horrible experience and terrible way to end my experience in Germany! Just beware!! Horrible situation!!

Yelp
When in Rome, or in this case Germany, you have to experience the spa. It's affordable and relaxing. Pools filled with natural mineral water of varying temperatures, under lots of natural light from the dome. A sauna and massage unit in different rooms, there is a variety of areas to lounge. I didn't see any children, I believe 16 is the minimum age here. There are waterfalls and swimming areas outside and I hear this is open all year. The water is warm so even if the air is freezing, you will be comfortable and exhilarated by the variance. Upstairs is a clothing prohibited area for a few extra euros for those who are adventurous. I was. For an American this is for the very mature and open minded. I love to people watch and experience the culture from a non tourist perspective. This was not an American nudist beach where everybody is 60+. All ages from probably 16 up since I believe 16 is their technical adult age. But a wide range of people. There were outside areas that led to saunas, a hot tub and bar to grab a drink. Everything was charged to your waterproof bracelet (no where else to hold a wallet or purse, flip flops and towel only). Very relaxing and free. Loved it!

Yelp
I loved it here. It was the most relaxing and enjoyable experience of all of Germany. My body was exhausted and tight and soar from all of my travels. They have so many different jets and whirlpools to help you relax and to target each part of your body. It felt like an aqua massage. The restaurant was okay, nothing special, but the experience of the cold and warm plunge as well as the sauna and steam room and the indoor out door pools.... i never wanted to leave. Definitely recommend this for anyone.
