In Baden-Baden, Learning to Heal in the Style of German Aristocrats

"Caracalla, the 43,000 square-foot modern bathhouse built on top of the city’s tourable Roman bath ruins, features thermal baths and saunas. Visitors can enjoy warm water under rock grottoes, an outdoor hot tub, and a forest sauna. The bathhouse is known for its relaxing atmosphere and health benefits."

Spent a good 2 hours enjoying the thermal waters. Ticket for 2 hours to visit the pools and use the naturist sauna upstairs is 25 euros plus a 6 euro fee gorvtowel hire. But caution keep an eye on your towel as it's 21 euros if you lose it! In the sauna area upstairs it is a no textile area and you are obliged to sit on your towels in the saunas. There are lots of choices based on temperatures and there is a cafe. Downstairs the pools are huge and extend outside so you can swim and bathe in the sun. This area is textile so you need a costume. It is very clean and there are lots of changing areas ...showers and lockers for valuables. You get a waterproof fob that does everything including charging for food and drinks...opening lockers ...gaining access to the sauna area etc. Very well run...A must if you are visiting Baden Baden.

Disappointing. In the city’s largest thermal complex, they won’t even give you a glass of tap water for free (4,5€), and that pretty much sets the tone. Yes, you can relax a bit, but the whole place feels like a spa experience frozen in 2005: dated, worn-out, and in parts visibly damaged. The pools, especially the outdoor ones, are not warm enough. You can’t stay outside for long before it becomes uncomfortable. The saunas and steam rooms are also nothing special, which is disappointing for a “top German resort.” Overall, it feels like both the city and these spas haven’t aged well. I wouldn’t come to Baden-Baden for the spa experience. Only worth it if you’re here anyway to enjoy the nearby hills and use it as a base for trips to France and Switzerland.

Loved my first spa experience in Germany. I was definitely nervous and a little confused at times, but overall I had a great time and would love to go again. I wasn’t expecting kids there, which surprised me, but it was still super fun.

I had really high hopes for Caracalla, especially after planning this trip a month in advance. Unfortunately, the experience was incredibly disappointing from start to finish, like AWFUL! For weeks I tried emailing to book a treatment. I did get responses, but no one actually helped me schedule anything. They kept saying I could just walk in, even though online booking wasn’t working. When I arrived in Baden-Baden and went in person, the woman at the desk told me they were fully booked. After asking more questions, suddenly two appointment times appeared — so I took the earliest one. I asked if my husband could buy a day pass or even a couple of hours at the thermal baths while I had my treatment, and she told me absolutely not and that it was “forbidden.” The next morning I found out that you can rent time by the hour — and I was actually charged for four hours, even though the treatment itself included a couple of hours of bath access. Essentially, I was charged twice, and the staff member told me they could not refund me and “deal with it, lady.” The whole place felt unclean, run-down, and shockingly unkept for such a famous spa. I was genuinely shocked by how dirty some areas were. My treatment was supposed to be one hour but only lasted 35 minutes. I left feeling worse than when I arrived. To make matters worse, a man approached me and asked me to get naked in the sauna together — it felt extremely inappropriate and uncomfortable. I would strongly recommend reconsidering a visit here. The photos online make it look beautiful, but the reality was chaotic, unhelpful, and far below the standard you’d expect from a wellness spa in Baden-Baden. I left frustrated, upset, and honestly wishing I had spent my time elsewhere.

As a lover of Japanese style hot baths, the rather tepid baths didn’t do it for me. Also the scale and theme park atmosphere was missable. So suffice to just walk through the first floor and experience the various baths especially the outdoor one with the strong current and lazy river. The second floor (no clothes) was much better as the saunas were actually hot! There are a variety of them and the most impressive is the steam room (great spa) with a sun drenched view of the outdoor bath downstairs. There are also outdoor saunas which are charming especially in cooler weather. Here you really get to sweat out toxins and the spaces are smaller and with fewer people so that you can relax. The cold plunge pools dotted around are amazing for circulation, and the foot baths to regulate temperature were a thoughtful healthy touch. I wish I skipped through downstairs more quickly to spend my time here! The changing rooms were well designed for maximum efficiency - you enter from the outside into a changing room, disrobe and the locker is on the other side. Vice versa when you leave. Everything is streamlined and neat. With the mass of human traffic I think the spa staff do their best to keep things clean but it’s not going to be 100%. Don’t bring too much - swimsuit (a must for baths) and rubber nonskid slippers if u need footwear (optional I think). Also a towel or two for the sauna - if u like to put something over u or under your head. Bathrobe if u intend to hangout in the comfy chairs for a while. Important tip - the GPS location fails if coming by car, please put in GPS the address for the parking garage : Rotenbachtalstraße 1, 76530. Did not realise the spa validated parking, so please remember to do so.

Good experience. Loved the outdoor pools. The reception person could surely use a smile to make the place more ‘thermal’ (warm). There is a lot of things one can do. Recommend 3-4 hours minimum. Did not try the cafeteria but it is good. Parking can be validated. Being own towels to save money. And relax as much as u can. Most visitors were nice and fun.

Excellent place to relax. The pools are clean. The changing rooms and lockers make getting in and out quick. The outside pools are delightful. You pay for either 2 hours 3 hours or all day.

We visited Terme Caracalla on early sunday afternoon and we really enjoyed our visit. It was not as crowded as we expected to be. The water temperature was perfect and the saunas was great. No water machines at sauna area, you can purchase beverages though. Staff was friendly.

Yelp
I had a horrible experience at this place. Beware! As I was leaving a gentleman from the US was being accused of taking something/not getting refunded for his towel because he did not have a receipt. Next it was my turn to check out... the woman at the check out desk aggressively kept saying I owed 3.50 for a lemon... and accusing my son of having a lemon??? We are wondering what a lemon is (apparently it's a drink) then accused me going to sauna... we never stepped foot in a spa and never had this so called lemon... it was a horrible experience and terrible way to end my experience in Germany! Just beware!! Horrible situation!!

Yelp
When in Rome, or in this case Germany, you have to experience the spa. It's affordable and relaxing. Pools filled with natural mineral water of varying temperatures, under lots of natural light from the dome. A sauna and massage unit in different rooms, there is a variety of areas to lounge. I didn't see any children, I believe 16 is the minimum age here. There are waterfalls and swimming areas outside and I hear this is open all year. The water is warm so even if the air is freezing, you will be comfortable and exhilarated by the variance. Upstairs is a clothing prohibited area for a few extra euros for those who are adventurous. I was. For an American this is for the very mature and open minded. I love to people watch and experience the culture from a non tourist perspective. This was not an American nudist beach where everybody is 60+. All ages from probably 16 up since I believe 16 is their technical adult age. But a wide range of people. There were outside areas that led to saunas, a hot tub and bar to grab a drink. Everything was charged to your waterproof bracelet (no where else to hold a wallet or purse, flip flops and towel only). Very relaxing and free. Loved it!

Yelp
I loved it here. It was the most relaxing and enjoyable experience of all of Germany. My body was exhausted and tight and soar from all of my travels. They have so many different jets and whirlpools to help you relax and to target each part of your body. It felt like an aqua massage. The restaurant was okay, nothing special, but the experience of the cold and warm plunge as well as the sauna and steam room and the indoor out door pools.... i never wanted to leave. Definitely recommend this for anyone.
