"Blue Meditation One of my favorite places in the whole world—Vieques! I'm actually a little apprehensive to share, because I'd love to keep it the semi-secret it is. If you time it well, you can have this beach all to yourself. By Gui E"

"The most popular beach is Caracas, because it’s the first one on the south side of the reserve, and because it’s white sand — like, so white, white, powdery sand. You can easily visit a couple beaches in a day; the best thing to do is get a map and explore all the beaches, and the further you go — like to Ensenada Honda or Pata Prieta — the more secluded they are."

Google
The cleanest and most beautiful beach that we visited in Vieques. The sand was the softest and water the warmest. Plenty of parking. Only downside was that there was not much shade. If there were some trees or areas for shade, this would’ve been the perfect beach!

Beautiful beach. There are easy hiking trails that start at the end of the beach and take you into other trails that lead to other beaches and cool spots. Wear closed shoes. Take water with you.

Vieques, PR We just visited on 6/21/25. Getting there was not the most fabulous experience. We took the ferry from Ceiba. It’s very cheap. For two seniors it’s $4.00. If you bring beach chairs , coolers etc it’s extra for each item. I thought the ferry would be like here in NY. Where you could see outside and walk on the deck. But you’re enclosed and can’t see a thing. With that said we called a taxi service and paid $60 round trip. Horses roam freely , even on the beach property and their poop is everywhere. The beach was covered in sea grass. I didn’t go in the water but my husband did. He said once you get beyond the grassy area in the water, it’s clear. If you arrive early you can get a covered area with table and chairs. Not sure that I would visit this beach again. I’ll try a different one.

Beautiful Beach, My families first time visiting Vieques. We decided to make it a day trip, took an early ferry. I recommended negotiating with the taxi drivers right off the ferry for the best price. We had 7 people so I thought we would be limited in options but there were plenty of taxis with large vans. We worked a deal for drop off and pick up, definitely get a phone number for your driver. Ride was about 15 minutes from the ferry terminal. The beach was flawless, not over crowded. Sand was clean and water was clear. Keep in mind there are no facilities at this beach, that includes bathrooms, food, rentals. We brought everything we needed. If you are unsure of which south side beach to visit definitely keep Caracas on the list.

Probably our favorite beach we tried on Vieques. Fully paved road to get there minus the parking lot/access road so 4WD is not needed. Went on a Sunday morning and was able to find parking and a spot on the beach very easily. Beach itself was very clean and the water is incredibly clear and calm. We didn't have snorkeling gear but would have enjoyed doing that here too. Wish we could have spent a full day here but we will certainly come back if we visit Vieques again.

We came on a cloudy day and the waves were really big and the water wasn't very warm. There's also a lot of seaweed on the beach as well as in water and the water is on the cloudy side. The sand is not the clean kind because there's a lot of sticks/debris. Most of the beach is plants and there's a lot of sharp things in the grass. We were also getting bit up by ants for whatever reason. I'm not sure if it's the weather, but from this experience I wouldn't recommend this beach. Since the beach itself is so small, there's not much to explor or room to walk down the beach. Keep in mind that there's no bathrooms here (there is sheltered picnic tables). Also, there are a lot of wild horses, so guard your food or you won't have any.

Google
Waves aren’t high even when it is the middle of the month and sand is a beautiful white color. Be careful of poisonous plants because my daughter got some type of allergic reaction that stung so make sure to wear pants and swim shoes. There are also stinging nettle that looks like normal leaves so be aware of that too.

This beach is amazing! White fine sand. Not too crowded and surrounded by nature and beautiful palm trees. It makes the perfect storm for an amazing time. Also getting here by ferry is about an hour, but it’s totally worth it! Not to mention seeing the free range horses. I would definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Favorite beach out of our whole Puerto Rico trip! A must go for anyone traveling to PR/Vieques. The horses on the beach were such an awesome sight.

Yelp
I spent my first day in Vieques at Blue Beach, but was just as impressed my second day at Red Beach. It was a bit crowded compared to Blue Beach, but just as beautiful and serene. The wild horses and native plants provide a full Vieques beach experience. The Caribbean waters are warm and clear. The white sand beach is pristine clean and perfect for relaxing the day away. If you're lucky, you might get a glimpse of an amazing sunset or rainbow after a nearby rain shower.

Yelp
MOST POPULAR BEACH FOR FAMILIES WITH YOUNG KIDS because it has gazebos, toilets, soft sand, and clam waters (on most of the beach). For daredevils, the western end of the beach has much bigger and rougher waves.

Yelp
My favorite part of this beach is that it's super breezy. The wind keeps me cool. Not as much natural shade as other beaches though, so bring an umbrella just to be safe. Lots of waves too since it's not in a bay

Yelp
This wonderful beach has good boogie waves on one aside and calm on other end. There a cabanas and grills and some shade under trees. There is also a hiking trail.

Yelp
I love this beach. I came here 7 years ago as a child and this was the only beach I remembered. But when I came back this time it was even more beautiful then I remembered. Don't miss out on this very accessible and beautiful beach! I did some snorkeling and saw beautiful coral and reef fish with bright blue and yellow. Make sure you walk to the end and touch the cliffs and walk under them!

Yelp
Paradise!!! This beach is perfect !!! beautiful! First if you are staying in the main island you will need to drive or take a taxi to Fajardo to take the ferry or if you wanna fly you can do it too. I would recommend taking the ferry , its cheaper. If you go in high season you would need to buy the tickets days before you are planning to go. Just ask in your hotel if they can get the tickets for you. For this beach you need to take everything!! there is not a store or anything nearby avaible for you to buy anything. You need to be prepared. When you get to the island take a taxi and tell him you wanna go to Red Beach or Playa Caracas. He is going to charge you 10 dollars for each person, this is including your ride back to the ferry. There is some areas of shade ! not a lot!!!! The water is clear ! the sand is soooo white ! you can do snorkeling !.. You would not find a lot of people in this beach and if you go during the week maybe you will see 5 or 6 people ! It's the perfect spot!!!

Yelp
In A Nutshell: -Like almost every single beach on Vieques, Red Beach offers you seclusion w/ access to spectacular beaches. -There are a few gazebos available for you to set-up a picnic. -There is one bathroom (on the right by the entrance), but don't have high expectations, it gets the job done. Overall, there isn't much to be said. Look at the photo. Post card perfect.

Yelp
Crystal Clear Water and White sand. Definitely one of the Best beaches in Vieques! Note: This beach is located inside of what was the Naval Base. There's some canopy, but there's not kiosks or anything to buy food, so go prepared. www.islandbreezepr.com * Taxi Service from Ceiba or Fajardo Ferry to San Juan or San Juan Airport. Rainforest tour available departing from both. 787-370-8841

Yelp
THIS IS IT. The beach of your (my) dreams. Pack a cooler and come prepared. Come early and grab a shelter. Big, beautiful beach with wildlife in and out of the water. Great snorkeling on the left hand side as you look out on the water.

Yelp
Of all the beaches we checked out during our scooter tour, I'd say this was definitely the most crowded ("crowded" is used loosely, it still wasn't bad). I'd also guess most of the people here were locals (noticed a few beach parties with music, dancing, and cans of Medalla). Once again the beach itself was perfect with soft white sand beaches and nice calm blue waters for swimming. There are a few cabanas with tables if you want to get set up for a lunch, but other than that, there is minimal shade. There is a big parking lot here, but no facilities (no water or restrooms). Of all the beaches east of Esperanza, this one is the closest (other than the ones which are walking distance near Esperanza). A solid 4-star beach experience.

Yelp
This was by far our favorite beach in Vieques. Don't get me wrong, there are no bad beaches on this island, it's just Playa Caracas was the best one from all the excellent ones. Perfect sand, perfect Caribbean Sea, good snorkeling, great sunsets.

Yelp
Gorgeous beach! Calm water for swimming and areas for snorkeling. Large parking area and some areas for shade. Can get a little crowded. Don't forget to bring EVERYTHING you will need at the beach that day. Water, food, towels etc. There is no place near by to purchase these items. Also the vans that pick up and drop off are fairly spotty. Make sure that you are ready for them or pre-arrange a pickup time.

Yelp
Heaven. This beach is so insanely beautiful that you feel like you are living in a postcard. It's a speed-bumpy ride out here, but worth it. We originally planned to go to Garcia Beach/Playuela, but the cab driver missed the turn & dropped us off at Caracas. What a great substitute! We arrived around 10 & there was not another person until noon, when the ferry arrivals start trickling in. At it's busiest there were maybe 40 people there. The beach is lined with palm trees & 8 little cabanas, providing some shade, although on a busy weekend, surely not enough for everyone. The water is warm & clear, the sand is bright white & the scenery is amazing. The snorkeling is decent. Not the best on the island, but worth putting your flippers on for. My only complaint, at all, was that the sand did have a lot of "stickers" in it by the grassy areas, so you may want to wear your sandals!

Yelp
4/5 if they get a few kiosks up, then this would be perfect! so you got up super effin early to catch the damn ferry on a bumpier ride than expected. you flag a taxi and you're driving down, and you realize there are wild horses running around. you make the mandatory pokemon joke and next thing you know you've pulled up to this strip of beach and it's just you, a few other families, and clear skies and clear water. whoa. if you catch the first ferry, you'll be toes in the sand by maybe 10:45 or 11am, then you'll need to call by around 4pm to get back to the ferry - so total play time about 5ish hours. we pretty much had a good strip of sand just to ourselves. we went in the middle of the week and it was pretty lax - we left our stuff in the little pavillon (i think there were maybe 10 available across the whole beach) and then hit the water. it was lovely and calm, definitely felt more relaxing than other "destination beaches." if you're facing the water, to the left are some rocks that you can walk out towards and have a cute mermaid/merman photoshoot - to the rights are more rock faces where you can do the same. i'd say generally the water was calm and enjoyable for lapping at your feet in the sand and for swimming around. the challenge here is that there's literally you and the beach...and nothing else. which means you need to bring water, food, ice, etc. great, you remembered to pack all the medalla, but then you forgot potable water. uh-oh. great you remembered the snacks, but for staying the bulk of the afternoon you really wish you had something more substantial to eat - you get the point. if you don't want to lug that all with you on the boat, then pick it up at the few restaurants/stores right by the ferry in VQ. you'll be less hangry than we were by the end of it.

Yelp
This place is...just YES! After all my Yelpsearching, I chose this beach because it was the closest beach to where we are staying and have you seen the pictures? This place is absolutely amazing! The beach is located about 15 minutes away from Bananas Restaurant area. We came here four about to hours (3p-5p), it was love at first sight. I was nervous that there would be an overload of people at Caracas, but to my surprise there were the right amount of people. We were not able to find a spot with shade, so we just put our each chairs down & endured the sun. It was definitely a hot day, so after a mini selfie session we headed into the water. The water was clear see through blue, with a perfect temperature to cool down our bodies, but not freezing. We splashed around, relaxed, and stared in amazement at the beautiful view surrounding us. This has to be the best beach I have ever been to and I consider myself a beachie. COME HERE, you will not regret it! I wish I could live here, but I am glad there is not any hotels to ruin the peacefulness of this place.

Yelp
Beautiful! The water is super clean. It is sandy in the beginning and gets coral-i later. Has shades and it gets deep gradually.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
This beach is really beautiful. It was a great place for clean sand and calm, clear waters. There were a lot of people here (more than other beaches we went to), but you can see why. Very safe and the water was just perfect. It was also very clean, ie, not lots of rocks, seaweed, etc. I enjoyed the water, but the one thing that I did not enjoy was the sand flies. I got bitten a LOT and decided to just stay in the water to avoid them. Maybe it was the day we went, but the other beaches weren't as bad. I suggest to bring bug spray, just in case!

Yelp
Now this is beautiful. The beach was clean and well maintained. I felt I and my family were safe. Fair snorkeling if you wish to paddle and walk a bit but foe the sun-bather, it is top notch! My 14 year old daughter said that it was like a dream. Because most Caribbean beaches look better in the ads than in real like. This was the opposite. I will be back!

Yelp
RED BEACH was my favorite! Parking was right there, beach was real clean, loved, loved everything about it! Easy to get to, paved road, I highly recommend!

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Beautiful beach! A bit more crowded than I expected, but still plenty of breathing room. If you get there somewhat early, you can claim one of eight or so covered picnic tables. We got one, but a family that showed up after us mind-bogglingly decided to "share" ours without asking first. WTF??? Anyway, we had heard that this is a great snorkeling beach, but when we were there in February, the surf was very rough, underwater visibility was limited to about 6-8 feet, and I didn't see a single fish out in the rocky area, so it's definitely not good snorkeling ALL the time. Even though the surf was rough in the deeper water, it was calm enough for swimming or floating near the shore.

Yelp
We visited Playa Caracas during our trip to Vieques. It's a lovely spot - secluded and not too big, with beautiful sand, clear turquoise waters, palm trees, and some decent snorkeling along the rocky areas on the left side. It is the most accessible of the nature reserve beaches, with parking, a composting toilet outhouse, and even on the weekend a small kiosk selling a few bottled drinks and chips. Playa Caracas was probably our second favorite beach that we went to in Vieques. Our favorite overall was Sun Bay Beach (more expansive, more spots to spread a towel under a palm tree, and food/drinks, lovely to walk along, but a bit more developed and no snorkeling), Pata Prieta had the best snorkeling of the spots we went but less beach, and Playa Chivas was less accessible, a narrower beach, and had fewer shady spots.

Jenna K.

Yelp
Loved it. Beautiful, serene, somewhat secluded, picture-perfect. I took the ferry from Fajardo and came straight to this beach ($5 one way taxi), which was a recommendation from a guy who grew up in Vieques. And he was right. This beach is beautiful, the locals knows it. There was a couple of local families on the beach among just a handful of other tourist couples. The sand is white, the water is aqua-blue, and the number of huts were perfect for putting your stuff down and/or relaxing. I didn't bring much other than water, but I was okay. Some people brought ice boxes etc, but I thought it would just be too much of a hassle. It's true--there are no facilities of any kind at the beach. No bathroom, no shower, no vendors, no one trying to rent out beach chairs, etc. This is what makes this place feel like an unadulterated, private beach. The only thing not great about the beach is the lack of snorkeling site, but I can live with that. There's just some sea grass and dead corals without many fish. This was also true for the Pata Prieta beach, which is 0.3km east of this beach and harder to get to. Go to the Red Beach and enjoy the picturesque sight and water!
