If you are a seafood lover and are in Ambergris Caye, you will hear about Caramba. They specialize in all things from the sea first, with also other meats. They have a catch of the day station, just outside and near the entrance of the restaurant. Here fish, scallops, crab, large prawns or langoustines, to name a few, sit half buried in ice. You choose what you desire, the associate tags a price on each item, puts it on a plate and you take it to your table. There, you tell the server how you would like it prepared. There are many options to cater to almost every taste.
This all sounds lovely, because the seafood is fresh, but it is way overpriced. The langoustines are all small and about $25 US each (yes each). The popular red snapper varies in price depending on the size. Keep in mind, there is no weighing here. The outside associate just sticks a price on every item just by a glance. My small whole red snapper was $40 US.
I had one langoustine grilled with spices and the red snapper deep fried. Both were excellently prepared to perfection. Succulent, moist and full of flavor. For the two included sides I chose rice and beans (the national dish) and potato salad. The rice and beans were dry and tasted old. The potato salad was creamy and tasty. Garlic bread with thousand island dressing on the side is available, just too small slices but you have to ask for it. On my last night here, I came back. Had the crab cakes to start that lacked flavor and taste. More filler than crab (3 pieces for $18 US). When asked how it was, I mentioned it to the server and he did not care. The fries were at ambient temperature, been sitting for a while. I also had 3 langoustines grilled as before (for $75 US) even though they were not of equal size. The accompanying coleslaw was superb. Yes, this is a tourist trap and still very popular. Hence the high prices. If you order the right stuff, you can have a memorable evening, even though it can put a few holes in your wallet.
