Ambergris Caye, Belize, Travel Guide

"The food at Caramba Restaurant is so fresh "they'll let you pick out the exact fish you want to eat for dinner," says Richard Evanich, managing director at Mahogany Bay Resort & Beach Club. A seafood-heavy menu with everything from conch and snapper to lobster tails features Caribbean and Mexican-inspired dishes at what is one of San Pedro's most popular restaurants." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. "Try Local Cuisine at Caramba Restaurant From the first time I set foot on the island of Ambergris Caye, Caramba became my favorite restaurant in San Pedro. And that’s not changed, even ten years later. Rene Reyes, Sr. and his wife Patty have done a remarkable job with the restaurant. Every season brings something new and exciting – whether it be décor changes, menu enhancements or even new cocktail creations. The Reyes’ sons Jonathan and Renesito are now involved in day-to-day operations, keeping Caramba one of the long-standing family-owned and operated businesses on the island. Personal recommendations include Conch Fritters (seasonal), Sopa de Lima, Fish Tacos, Pibil Pork Sub and the Coconut Shrimp. Any of the seafood dishes are spectacular – go for the Maya or Tour Guide cooking options. Be sure to try one of bartender Charlie’s cocktails, like the Strawberry Beerita, King Margarita, or a special mojito. Not a drinker? Caramba has some of the best fruit smoothies on the island. Closed Wednesdays. Check Foursquare for current specials."

The Perfect Week in Belize

Unique dinning experience with fresh seafood that you select and they prepare it for you with delicious spices. I had the blackened red snapper and it was delicious! Best restaurant we ate at on the island, highly recommend.

I rarely pan a restaurant, but Caramba was exceptional bad with both the food prep and the waiter experience. I won't come back because, for the very high price, I don't want to risk another terrible experience. The food: I ordered sea food a la carte, including lobster, conch and snapper. I chose to have them grilled. All of my seafood was over cooked and damp as if steamed and not grilled. My conch and lobster were like shoe leather. The portion size for the rice & beans was about 1/2 cup, where all other places I've eaten at these last three weeks in Belize gave you a cup. The salad was the same size. Odd. The service: Marshal, who greeted me, was wonderful. I had to wait 20 minutes for a table, which is reasonable. I wish Marshal had been my waiter. My waiter was indifferent. After i ate my entree, i was messaging my wife (not present). My waiter came with the credit card machine and hovered over me while I finished messaging my wife. He clearly and rudely wanted to turn over my table quickly. I had neither beer, appetizer nor dessert and my bill was ~$240 BZ. For that much, he could have waited a couple minutes. If you want to contrast this with similar food at another restaurant a few blocks south, look at my review of El Fodon.

We didn't have reservations, when we got there nobody was waiting but we waited 8 minutes for a table just to be cleaned. The food was remarkably delicious. Plus it was my husband birthday and 5 others that night they done a celebration for each birthday table, was a little slow but the food made everything better and worth waiting for.

I researched this place on TikTok and was excited to go for my bday dinner for my visit to Belize. When we arrived we were able to pick our seafood outside of the restaurant. Our waiter was nice and respectful. We ordered a huge lobster, snapper fish, shrimp, mussels, calamari. When the food came out the presentation was very nice. After tasting the food every thing was super salty. The calamari was rubbery and very spicy to the point where my husband nearly choked on the combo of spice level and texture. We reported this to the waiter, who then reported it to the chef, the chef apologized and stated that’s how he seasons his food. We continue to try to squeeze lime on the seafood to see if we can eliminate some of the salt but it was too much. We ate maybe 3 pieces of lobster (82usd) 1 shrimp, 1/2 of the fish, 2 mussels. Another wait staff was able to speak to the manager, he said that they will take the food back and since we had already eaten some of it and the food was prepared he will take it to the back for them to taste to see if it was salty. They did just that and came back to apologize to say that they agreed that it was salty and that isn’t how they usually season their food. The manager offered 50% off the order. We were highly disappointed bc it was a waste of our $150 us for food we hardly ate. My dissatisfaction was shared with the manager and we left. Now things happen while cooking, but paying $150 for food that we hardly touched due to overly salted food was a big turn off and disappointment for me. There was no other resolution by management. Being a chef myself and owning a business, there is some responsibility/and losses a restaurant should have to take for food that isn’t to the standard of the restaurant, never the customer. Although the food looked good in presentation, it was overly seasoned and the experience was ruined for me. Will never return.

There were only two of us and we were set immediately, right before the dinner rush. I ordered the lobster coconut curry, my husband chose his own seafood, and we shared the crab stuffed jalapeños. Our entrees were tasty but neither of us would recommend the stuffed jalapeños; they didn't have any flavor and we were expecting them to be crispy (because they're deep fried) but they were soft and luke warm. The drinks were good.

Very Good service, and you can chose what to be grilled for you, but the lobster was too spicy and the octopus was impossible to chew. I sent it back and then they returned it again non chewable. Prices are higher than average on the island.

We were super excited to dine here after reviews and checking out their menu online but most of the menu prices aren't real bc you go pick your own lobster/whole fish (which is super cool but the pricing is very misleading). We ended up ordering the mixed fish appetizer and the conch and calamari were horribly over cooked. So was my calamari main course. And the seafood soup only had fish... none of the other seafood listed. The service and atmosphere were amazing but the food was really disappointing.
