"Dinner under the Eye of the Moose For a thick, juicy steak; a casual, upmarket atmosphere; and one of the best cocktail lists in Red Lodge, book a table at the Carbon County Steakhouse, a trendy joint with a bit of rustic, Western pizzazz. The patio is open during those precious warmer months and makes for a sensational sundowner spot, or sit under the watchful eye of the ever-present moose at the bar, where you can toss back a few oysters as you work your way through the carefully-curated wine list."

We made reservations ahead of time. We checked in and were immediately seated. I would've given 5 stars for the food, but we ordered the "chicken lollipops" and one was way undercooked. We both had New York Strips, very tender, cooked perfectly. Our server was attentive all evening. Very good service. The best steak in Red Lodge.

Google
Excellent food, excellent service. We got the tomahawk steak for two (it could have fed 4 lol) it was perfectly cooked and extremely flavorful. Our waiter was excellent, very knowledgeable and helpful. Our table was outdoors under a canopy and was a very nice setting. Although people did go by and stare at the huge steak. Not a problem, They were friendly.

Google
A wonderful restaurant with top quality steak. Having visited Montana now and being such big foodies we can honestly say the quality of beef is unbeatable . The potatoes were absolutely delicious , we tried both the mash and the baked options.

We had such a great experience here! Our server was Megan and she is amazing! She checked up on us frequently and with an infectious smile! We got the cowboy coffee ribeye which was tender and very well cooked. We also got the lobster Mac and cheese which had great flavor and was perfectly cheesy. To finish off the meal we got the cow pie which was so yummy! Great meal will be back here, thank you Megan!!

Well, a few weeks ago we got to visit this lovely restaurant...The ambiance is beautiful, it's a little but very inviting and warm- it's perfect for a romantic date night. The upstairs wine cellar is beautiful as well. We were served by a very nice waiter, and all of the staff were very pleasant. Everyone seemed very welcome here, from men just knocking off work from their construction jobs, to well dressed business people. We were so excited to give this place a try- my husband had seen the tomahawk steak on the menu online before our trip and was super excited. Unfortunately, that was where things fell flat. The steak came out and it looked as if it was cooked on a grill that wasn't quite hot enough yet, or as if the piece of steak had been pulled from the refrigerator and stuck on the grill without coming to room temperature (in our industry, you can do this with care- think dry aged steaks). Well, when we started eating, it was very much under seasoned and very tough - a good steak needs only salt and pepper - you can guild the lily with special sauces and such, but that should be only if you want to. The broccolini that came with it also had no seasoning, and had the flavor of the smell of burnt hair (I'm was kinda sad because I love broccoli and had the bearnaise sauce that I was looking forward to using with it). My side that I had picked were the fries. They also had no seasoning, and reminded me very much of McDonalds French fries...I hate giving reviews like this, especially for the cost- we were so looking forward to this dinner. I hope on our next trip through, that we have a better food experience (maybe it was just an off night for the restaurant?), and that everyone else does as well.

Google
Here for our third anniversary and couldn't be enjoying it more! We actually came here the night we met, also. The food is always amazing and our waitress, Kristen was attentive and very friendly.

Google
Fantastic atmosphere, beautiful building, and amazing food! Could it get any better then this? Yes pumpkin spice creme brulee! I love this place. When I come back to Red Lodge I'll have to come back!!!

Google
Our waitress Meaghan was wonderful and the place has cool vibe to it. However, the food for the price was mediocre. Did not look like a 6oz filet. At $45 dollars, you shouldn't have to pay for béarnaise and mushrooms. Caesar salad and pasta dish had too much dressing and sauce.

Yelp
Staying at the Pollard Hotel on a recent motorcycle trip and the front desk clerk highly recommended Carbon County Steakhouse for dinner, so we followed her lead. We were greeted by a friendly young woman and were asked if we had reservations. We did not. She said no problem and offered us a seat at a hightop in the bar area. Weirdly, the bar (3 feet away) was "closed"? But no problem, we were happy to order drinks and wait for a table. I ordered their Rosemary Old Fashioned (see pic), which the nice young lady made. Honestly, that drink is the reason for the 4th star in this review. It was well crafted and exceptionally tasty. My colleague ordered the Bearproof Manhattan and enjoyed it as well. Our wait for the table wasn't more than 10 minutes so we took our drinks and headed into the dining room. Very western steakhouse vibe, which was nice. Our server was kind of a strange dude. Very low energy and acted like we were kind of annoying him by being there. We heard him interacting with other tables and it wasn't quite as bad but it wasn't the level of service you'd typically expect at the prices they charge. Fortunately, I was so tired and love-drunk on my Old Fashioned that I didn't really care. I had the salmon and my buddy had the beef stroganoff. Both were good. I would absolutely go back here to have another cocktail, but probably would try a couple of the other places for dinner before doing food here again. Cannot recommend the Rosemary Old Fashioned highly enough--provided it's made by the same young woman (wish I could remember her name!).

Yelp
A wonderful place to meet family or friends for dinner! Great atmosphere, amazing fireplace and great food!
google avatar

Yelp
The food, drinks, atmosphere and service were all amazing. Among the best steaks I've ever had (tenderloin) and my wife loved her beef stroganoff!!! Loved the alfresco dining on the patio. All in all, a perfect dinner!

Mickey M.

Yelp
Always great food and service! Every time we visit we plan a dinner at the Steakhouse!

Yelp

Yelp
Ordered the Tomahawk. Cooked perfectly. Wife and I were very pleased. Service was great. Nice place.

Yelp
We came here for a birthday dinner. The food was absolutely wonderful. Cooked to perfection. My only complaint was our waiter (Joey? Bald gentleman) He never cracked a smile and was NOT friendly at all. In the 2.5hrs we were there, he checked on our table 3 times at most. We will come back, but I will ask for a different server !!!! This was a Thursday night at 6:30 pm.

Rico H.

Yelp
Today, makes the day I've had the greatest steak of my life, we ordered the 38-40 oz Delmonico, and it was absolutely phenomenal! The service was delightful too, for a small anniversary dinner they still gave us extra love! Thank you Megan and Kristin! You guys gave a wonderful and joyful environment while also keeping very professional!

Yelp
Immediately upon walking in, you step into the intimate bar, where Tim, the bartender happily greets you while serving and creating drinks for the bar and the restaurant. To the left is the hostess stand. It was Christmas Eve, and we had a reservation, but we were able to be seated early. The restaurant was filled with local families and tourists, alike. Our server was the friendliest pop of joy, and he had a great energy. The grilled Caesar is not your typical chopped salad. You get a head of romaine that has been grilled to perfection drizzled with a house made Caesar, some capers, parmesan, and house made croutons on the side. I've never had grilled lettuce, and my mind was blown! The shrimp cocktail comes as 5 jumbo shrimp atop the restaurant's own cocktail sauce. This was also fantastic! My son ordered the stuffed quail. The only other time I've had quail was from a street food vendor in Japan, and it wasn't horrible, but I said I'd likely not eat it again. Let me tell you... this stuffed quail was a total redemption for that. I actually considered trading my steak away for it. If this special is available when you visit the steakhouse, ORDER IT! You will not be disappointed. My steak was the Cowboy Coffee Ribeye. It sounded good on the menu, and I opted to add sautéed mushrooms. I began to second-guess my decision to order the steak, because I was thinking it might come smothered in the "coffee" sauce or that the mushrooms would have a sauce of their own and ruin the steak experience. I was wrong!! The coffee sauce came on the side (I actually dumped half of it onto the plate, so it mixed with the juices from the steak, and I got just the right amount of flavor in each piece of steak I sliced off. The mushrooms on top were not saucy at all, just a hint of butter, and I thoroughly enjoyed that and the fact that my steak still tasted like a steak. I would order this again and again. My steak was cooked PERFECTLY! The Gallagher Ribeye came out looking like grilled gold on a platter, BUT it was unfortunate that the flavor didn't match the aesthetic. The steak was seasoned with salt and pepper and should have been medium rare. The steak was overcooked, and bland in flavor. I was offered a bite to confirm this, and I offered the rest of my Cowboy coffee sauce as a band-aid. The server had a wonderful personality, but I do feel like he could have checked on us a little more often, and he did forget my son's "after dinner Shirley Temple". WITH THAT SAID-- the restaurant was busy on Christmas Eve, and I think that he was one of only two servers in the restaurant, so I'm not docking stars for that.

Steve A.

Yelp
Waiters were very friendly, nice atmosphere in classic Montana style wooden interior, the steak was delicious and very nicely prepared

Nicalaine B.

Yelp
The food is excellent and quite beautifully presented. The service couldn't be better and we like the ambiance. Tenderloin was so tender you didn't need a knife. Try the Burrata for something different. Perfect spot to celebrate a special occasion.

Joseph S.

Yelp
We had a fantastic experience. The drinks were perfect. The burrata appetizer was a fantastic opener. The grilled Caesar salad was an incredible mix of smoky, salty, crispy, cool, and delicious. The NY Strip was perfectly done and the cowboy sauce was so much better than described. The "Beggars Purse" pasta is up there with the best pastas we have ever tasted. It's the kind of taste you daydream about. Our server Joey was wonderful and memorable. Overall it was the best restaurant experience we've had in ages.

Maria V.

Yelp
My husband and I came for dinner and loved it. We had the crab cake appetizer, grilled Ceasar, steak special and chicken mole special. All DELICIOUS!! Service was great. Loved the ambience had the music too. We would definitely come back.

Jami F.

Yelp
We have never had a bad meal at Carbon County Steakhouse. The steaks are always perfectly cooked and the service is always top notch. we look forward to dinner here whenever we go.

Eric S.

Yelp
Nice ambiance, but disappointing. Consider all reviews before eating here. Drinks were good

Yelp
We were staying in Red Lodge with our family (total of 6 adults and 3 kids) and had dinner here. I was worried that the kids would not be welcomed here but the restaurant has a nice and cozy atmosphere. It's nice without being too stuffy. The Brussels sprouts were great! Our steaks were delicious and the drinks were great too! I can't remember the name of the cocktail I got but I think it was the honey sage? Our waitress was great and super patient with our rowdy group. She even brought us a dessert for our anniversary. I wish I could remember her name but she looks like Lake Bell! We unintentionally closed down the place and the manager was so kind to us. We were in town for a funeral and eating here as a family was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. If you're in the area and want a nice meal with great service, I highly recommend this restaurant.

Brad H.

Yelp
Had the tenderloin, baked potato, broccoli and a bottle of wine for a Sunday dinner. Service and the food was excellent!

Becky T.

Yelp
Very disappointed. 645 reservations, got seated at 720 AFTER seeing another group of 4 getting seated before us that had just arrived. We had to go up to the host and ask again about our table. "It's ready, so sorry". Another 10-15 minutes until the waiter came to take our drink order and tell us the special & what they DIDN'T have, 2 of the 3 items we planned to order. Took our order - then came back 30 minutes later to say it will be 5 more minutes. Ok cool. 10 mins later comes back and says they are out of mashed potatoes and rice. We can have baked potato or fries. For the $ we were spending we should be able to have what we ordered. Food came. 3 say the food was good and 1 said it was ok. Definitely Not worth the +$200 bill or our time. Go to Bogarts. 10 times better!!

M E.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Amanda our waitress helped steer us in making the right decision since I was torn. Service, ambiance was what I would expect in this quality steakhouse. Carbon County Cow Pie dessert was awesome. Cowboy Coffee Ribeye was my choice and Bill had the Gallagher cut.

Shelly B.

Yelp
The restaurant atmosphere was good! The service was not good at all! The waiter recommended a dish , when it came was awful ! Four prices of meat cut up with some type of cubin sauce. The meat was dried out! I sent it back! He brought me stroganoff! That was good! I was very disappointed with the meal. To say the least it was my birthday and I was looking forward to a good dinner! The waiter was rude after that! The dinners are expensive !

Yelp
We have been to Carbon County Steakhouse about a half dozen times since moving to the area and the food and service are always great. Looking forward to our next night out there.

Chassey W.

Yelp
We had the pleasure of dining here with a large group of 10 of our friends. Bonnie was a huge help in getting us a reservation short notice. It's not often you find a restaurant that will take your number and actually contact you back after working it out. We had a great sever and the food was excellent. Local beef was featured and cooked to perfection. The atmosphere is quiet and welcoming. Not loud or crowded. Highly recommend when visiting Red Lodge. And the Duke graces the ladies restroom
google avatar

Oscar R.

Yelp
The general manager, Bonnie, displayed the VERY WORST hospitality I have ever experienced in my life. She had no grace and no class. The wine list is pedestrian and their are noticeable errors. An 1990's time warp from hell. Save your money and support Wild Table, Mas Taco, Prerogative, and La Palmita. If you want a great steak than I would highly recommed either Bearcreek Saloon or a drive out to the infamous Edgar Bar. Life is too short for mediocrity. Hard pass.
google avatar

WesternCritic W.

Yelp
What a shame. Atmosphere is great! But sadly the food was a let down for the price! My ribeye was basically equivalent to chewing bubble gum as much gristle was in it. When I went to pay over $100 for 2 meals my magnetic strip was too dirty and they didn't know how to type numbers there so thankfully I had a card that the magnetic strip worked. The place used to be amazing but is going downhill unfortunately.
google avatar

Eileen B.

Yelp
The food was excellent, we each had a steak that was so tender! Try the Huckleberry Martini too. Our waiter Nicholas was so attentive, kind and professional. I'd definitely go back!
google avatar

Doug G.

Yelp
Nice decor. Definitely having problems No carbonated drinks Broken lol. No bread,no bartender slow service. Waited 50 minutes for food. Steaks were excellent. Very smokey something wrong with ventilation. All doors to outside were left open.
google avatar

Bill Y.

Yelp
Not bad place. The steak isn't done like it should be at a high Price steak house. It wasn't bad but it was well done not even close to medium that was asked for.
google avatar

Hayley J.

Yelp
Arrived for dinner at our reservation time, and was seated immediately. The bar was empty, but we arrived just as they opened. Small dining room, and a little bright so the ambiance was a bit off. However, take away the slight off put dining room distractions and focus on the food- you'll be impressed. All steaks were cooked to their desired temperatures. The wine list was great! A little outdated, but still very appealing. Service was great as well! The only thing regarding the food that I would mention is that the presentation wasn't the best. It was if the plates were thrown together in a hurry, but the taste made up for the poor presentation. Overall, it was a lovely experience and I would return in the future.

Sierra W.

Yelp
Decent steak house, good cocktails. Just don't sit outside. Got BOMBARDED by 20+ flies the entire time we were eating.
google avatar

Chelsea C.

Yelp
Excellent service and amazing food! We started with the mussels and shrimp cocktail. For dinner we had the New York strip and shrimp fettuccine. We were celebrating our anniversary and when our waiter found out, he brought complimentary dessert! Reasonably priced for the portions and caliber of food you receive. Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Fantastic foodie experience from beginning to end. Great cocktails with spirits made locally and an interesting wine list made everyone in our party happy. We started with the duck and crab cakes which were wonderfully seasoned and cooked perfectly. All 5 of us had different entrees and none disappointed. Cozy, welcoming atmosphere and staff.

Eric E.

Yelp
The steak was very good. Sevice was prompt.. HOWEVER, the HUGE number of flies circling and swooping in were just awful. I took several pictures of OVER 20 flies on our small table. Manager said "What can I do?" Do not eat on patio.
google avatar

William B.

Yelp
Interesting experience. Hostess is just learning her job. That's okay. Lisa is a delightful waitress. She's definitive in telling me her favorites. Pleasant woman, definitely aware of her job and certainly overworked. The manager was standoffish until the end. He needs to step up and better support his staff. I ordered the pork chop. Ordered medium, Lisa concurred. Received a well past well done piece of cardboard instead. Sides were good. The second attempt was better, only medium plus. Edible is all. I hope this is an establishment working out the kinks. Hurry up it's costing you clients and cash at this rate.
google avatar

Ashlynn B.

Yelp
Came here for an anniversary dinner and had a great time. The food was absolutely amazing and our server was super nice! Would definitely go again!
google avatar

Vince S.

Yelp
I literally can't place an order lol. They won't answer their phone and their online ordering website will not let you add anything to your cart. Something needs to be fixed.
google avatar

Heath D.

Yelp
Great steakhouse that's spectacular and accommodating in the off-season. Wonderful steakhouse with great staff. Our server was knowledgeable and funny while serving us a great meal. The Brussel sprout app is to die for and the Gallagher steak of the nite is always changing based on the availability. Last Monday's steam was a double cut pork chop. All in all a great meal.
google avatar

Desiree W.

Yelp
Hmmmm let's just say I asked for a to go salad. It took 15 minutes to get this salad. I wasn't looking for a fast food salad but a nice salad. Walked down to our car and opened up what I thought was going to be a fantastic salad. Was a horrible maybe 4 bites of a salad. I even gave them a tip, because I thought I was being a bit hasty as this was the 4th restaurant we went to in Redlodge trying to get a descent salad. I was tired and hangry. They gave me my salad in a fancy to go brown paper bag. I asked that it had the dressing on the side. They did not put it aside, they also didn't give me any utensils. Hmmmm how was I suppose to eat my salad. Well we headed home back to Bozeman and stopped at Columbus found a McDonalds and their salad and customer service was a 1000 x's better. They also gave me utentils, and honored my wishes for dressing on the side. Hmmmm
google avatar

Chad T.

Yelp
Service , drinks, and steak were excellent. Prices are a little high but my service and food made up for it. I don't normally leave reviews but I felt they deserved a higher rating than they have.
google avatar

Kenneth J.

Yelp
Served a supposed forty ounce ribeye (for two)that was under twenty ounces. The server was embarrassed to do so. Took 50% off the plate without hesitation, but we had to complain. I guess the management was hoping we wouldn't notice. I have to laugh. We're locals. I heard my wife on the phone today sharing the bad experience with several of her friends. She makes this one star review look good! We'll never go there again and I'm guessing the people my wife talked to won't either.
google avatar

Jennie G.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, apparently had a staffing issue which was ok, but no bartender. Food took forever and was cold when delivered. The poor staff was left hung out to dry. No manager, owner wasn't there, basically no one in charge. Felt sooo bad for these kids. We were visiting from out of state and we're celebrating a 25th anniversary and a 50th bday. (Party of 8) 3 people from out party who ate in the industry stepped up to help out. 1 of them who is a bartender, jumped behind the bar and the other two waited in tables. Lisa was amazing and very appreciative, even took care of some of our bill. I'm not saying don't try this place, but shame on the owner for allowing this to happen and not coming down to help. These poor kids did everything they possibly could. A few of them were crying and we tried to comfort them.
google avatar

Chrissie W.

Yelp
Husband & I stopped on our way through to Yellowstone. Enjoyed a fabulous bottle of wine, the Buffalo Ribeye & Ahi Tuna Steak. Both entrees were spot on flavor & preparation. If looking for a nice dinner, with unforgettable service, food & wine.. this is the place!

Tim P.

Yelp
We just came for dessert and drinks. I made a reservation through yelp for 4 people at 8:00. We arrived at 7:45 and were seated at 8:30. The hostess was very apologetic but when we were seated, no further mention was made, no offer of drinks while we wait was made. The service once seated was ok. Perhaps, giving us a complimentary dessert would have been a reasonable gesture. At 9:00, the bar next door started cranking up the music on their patio, which is basically the same seating area. While that was happening, the manager and employees were counting tips on the patio, not super classy. They only serve "Red Lodge Ale" beer on tap and Stella. While this is the most local beer, it is not very good compared to 90% of the other breweries in the state (I have been to 40+ breweries in Montana). All that aside, the desserts were fantastic and I would return just for that. I would definitely make an early reservation to avoid backlog of overbooked reservations and tourists sitting around occupying tables all night.

Yelp
Celebrating our 5th Anniversary of which 3 have been at CCS. We are never disappointed with the service and our meal. We were greeted immediately with a great smile and taken to our seat . Booth #22! Brian introduced himself , and took our cocktail ordered and wished us a Happy Anniversary. Our meal, as always was fantastic. Brian suggested a featured appetizer of a cheese blend inside mozzarella cheese and covered with a lushes pear and fennel chutney. Served with toasted bread. Outstanding! Robert had his usual wedge salad (never disappointed ) We always say we are going to try something new , but we both ordered the Cowboy Ribeye with a sweet rum sauce. Our steaks were cooked to perfection. We were surprised with Banana Foster prepared at our table by Brian. Words can not express how good this dessert was! Brian did a fantastic job, attentive, even though the restaurant was very busy. He was very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu and the specials. Left full and as always highly pleased with our dining experience. We love this place and the staff. We have never been disappointed!

Ande S.

Yelp
One of the best meals I have had in my life!!! I am from Chicago and have been to some of the best steakhouses in my city and honestly would pick this restaurant over them. The service was excellent! My drinks were on point! The steaks were amazing ! This restaurant is a modern with a nice Montana feel. I highly recommend!
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
I love the Carbon County Steakhouse, it is our go-to place for special outings and has never disappointed. Quality of food is exceptional (particularly the steaks of course) and the atmosphere is wonderful. If you are celebrating a life event be sure and let them know. If you like mussels, you won't find better but you need to reserve them ahead as the secret is out that they fly them in fresh in limited quantities. Enjoy!
google avatar

Ken W.

Yelp
The food (steak) is absolutely amazing!! One of the very best streaks (ribeye) I've ever had! Service was decent. Restaurant decor/ambiance is excellent. If in Red Lodge you should definitely eat here!!!
google avatar

Mark J.

Yelp
Three out of six plates were not hot when served. Had to leave table to find the server, he was leaning on the bar texting. Steaks had good flavor. Two were under cooked. Not what was expected. Poor slow service.

William F.

Yelp
What a disappointment ! We had not been to this restaurant in over 5 years due to the poor quality of the food then . We only returned when we heard it was under new owners. Instead, same owner, just a remodel of the dining room. The dining room is beautiful, and the employees and wait staff were absolutely excellent. The food , however, which was served promptly, was shockingly bad... at ANY price, and this is an expensive restaurant, 4 people came to over $250 not counting wine or cocktails... The Montana Egg Rolls were dry and tasteless, my steak and my partner's steak were overcooked and gristley and tough, the mashed potatoes undercooked, dry, and cold, served via ice cream scoop, congealed with a surface scum, a true horror - I would have begged for the mashed potatoes at the chow hall at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego to replace them !! - the vegetables an overcooked tasteless glue identified as veggies only by their colors, the raspberry flavored creme brulee as sickeningly sweet as candied corn and just as subtle, a whiskey sour served in a glass so small it could have been a votive candle in a prior life, etc, etc, you get the picture. The crab cakes were moist and good. And again the wait staff were great. Two of the four of us would have sent our entire meal back to the kitchen, but we were not paying, it was a thank you gift, and we did not want to make a scene or seem ungrateful or overly " big city ".... we're not, we live in a small town in WY.... but it was a stunningly bad meal for the price. We will not be back for another 5 years.... Beware eating here unless all you care about is ambience and service. The owner has recently bought the Pollard Hotel so we will hope he doesn't ruin that alternative for dining in Red Lodge as well. So sad. 20 years ago the CCS was a stunningly great steakhouse. Now the entire kitchen staff needs replacing. That's the problem with potentially good restaurants in small towns across the West : They seldom can retain good chefs and kitchen staff for very many years. Hopefully the CCS can snatch someone culinary fleeing Seattle or San Francisco. The place could turn around in no time.

Yelp
By far the best summertime patio dining experience I've had. Make sure to get reservations for the patio - in the summertime will definitely need them. The brussel sprouts and Cowboy Coffee Ribeye are amazing. As is the Swanky Roots Salad. The staff is accommodating and helpful. The children's menu goes beyond the typical chicken strips and ranch, and is actually healthy and interesting which is uncommon and I always appreciate.
