Retracing the Steps of My Ancestors, the Wild Scots of Galloway
"We were startled by the hulking silhouette of Cardoness Castle before we could even consult the GPS. Still standing on a rocky outcrop overlooking the River of Fleet estuary, the McCulloch stronghold was built in the 1400s."
We when to visit gatehouse of fleet. We have been trying too visit for a whlie but because of car issues we did quite get here. But 3rd time luck. And I am really glade because it have been such a great visit with great weather too go worth it.

Very small for £5. But with English heritage you get 50% off.
Had fun exploring. You can climb right to the top for a good view which is nice. Lady on the desk was very nice n helpful. Worth a quick drop in if you are passing.

Lovely castle perched on the top of a small hill, the views from the top are amazing. The garden beside the ticket office was a lovely place to enjoy a picnic and watch the wildlife, red squirrels and a variety of butterflies.

Yelp
Great views of the water! Climb to the top, great views of the ocean. High ceilings and nice large rooms. Get the guidebook too! Dogs welcome. Bad to view if very rainy.

Yelp
This is a tower house which is set next to the sea. We came here when we were staying at the wonderful caravan site near by, this place is historic scotland so free to its members and members of english heritage. There is a visitor centre which tells of the feud here between the mcullochs and the gordons that went on for so long that the family fortunes were drained. They memebr of staff here is very knowledble and will tell you all about it. The tower house is a nice place to expore with a prison main hall and battlements. The castle itself is a nice place but what makes it really interesting is the terrible history of the owners

Yelp
Cardoness Castle is set just outside the small town of Gatehouse of fleet on the Solway firth. It is a six story tower house dating back to the 16th century which was designed primarily to house the family of the local laird. It is in a great defensive position which gives excellent views over the fleet and further to the Solway firth. I would suggest that the £3.70 admission price is a little steep as I can't see you spending a massive amount of time here unless it is a fine day and you take a picnic. The best time to visit would be when they have additional things on such as during gala week or the beer festival.
