"Aspen's Mom and Pop Store Carl’s Pharmacy is more than a pharmacy. Opened in 1965 as a drug store, it is an extended version of a mom and pop’s store with a little bit of everything. On the first floor, they have a liquor department, a food department, a cosmetic department, the biggest greeting card selection in town, and of course the pharmacy and all the medical tools and remedies that go along with a pharmacy. The second floor is the fun stuff with souvenirs and costumes for the next upcoming holiday but the best part is the toy and arts and crafts area. For a small store they have a wide selection. They have everything from the modern computerized toys to the old-school wooden toys to the silly putty. I enjoy going up there and looking at all the entertaining knick knacks. On your way up the stairs make sure you get a pin to mark where you are visiting from on the large map."

This place has everything you could ever possibly need! Cosmetics, a pharmacy, homegoods, office supplies, children's toys and games, cold weather gear like hats and gloves, travel necessities, baby supplies, vitamins and supplements and lots more more, more!

Has everything you would need.

Google
I needed a prescription transferred here, and they managed to transfer it and fill it in about 24 hours! I appreciated being informed it was ready by text. Great service from an independent pharmacy!

Google
We stopped by this cool, old-school pharmacy and convenience store. I was looking for a hard-to-find sleep aid, and they had it here at Carl’s. The pharmacist was highly knowledgeable and gave us great information, which we appreciated. We would not hesitate to come back here. Thank you.

Google
The store is quite big and is the place in Aspen you will find everything you might need! But it is a bit confusing and dirty. Still, if you need anything, that’s the place to go

Google
The closest thing to shopping on a budget in Aspen. I was thrilled with the breadth and variety of their selection, especially upstairs. They have really nice Aspen souvenirs for quite cheap prices, relatively speaking (there are really nice collectible mugs for $9). They have a variety of camping gear upstairs (the cheap but quality brands), as well as toys, puzzles, games, electronics stuff, and more. You probably won't leave empty-handed from this place because you'll find something you didn't remember that you needed at a good price.

Google
They have everything but - what an awful service. They should also really take a shower

Courtney

Google
Extremely rude male pharmacy staff member. Poor customer service. Condescending way of speaking to me when I came to pick up my script that they sent a text saying was ready for pick up. Completely reasonable to expect customers to know your lunch schedule and to mold their day around it, right? Maybe include your lunch break hours in the text, it would have been more courteous than the way I was spoken to. Could have been polite about it, but couldn't manage that. I had to walk away without a script that is required to be taken daily. I guess ill just go without my medication. It's very disappointing that a "local" pharmacy treats its locals this way. Take your scripts to City Market or Clark's Market Pharmacy. Don't waste your time here.

Yelp
This place is Aspen's answer to the general store. They have everything. Now you will need to poke around but if you can imagine it, chances are they have it. Staff are super nice and friendly. Highly recommend this place for all your assorted needs.

Yelp
Convenient place to stop and pick up essentials while in Aspen. It had everything I needed after a long hike, and the employees inside were kind and helpful.

Yelp
Great speedy customer service. The pharmacist was fast, efficient and friendly and filled the Rx very quickly. Highly recommend this business

Buffy S.

Yelp
Believe everything you read in the negative reviews about their miserable staff and comically overpriced products. I watched my friend be humiliated by a nasty pharmacy cashier for accidentally putting one foot over a line in the floor intended to create space between customers. And then charged $35 for a Covid test. The price gouging is one thing - this is Aspen after all and one expects it to a certain extent. But if you are going to charge your customers more at least have the decency to treat them with courtesy and respect. They could learn something from the folks at the hardware store and Clark's and just about every other business in Aspen/Snowmass for that matter. What a shame.

Yelp
Probably the only place other than City Market where you can find essentials like soap, toothpaste, wipes, candles etc. Also cards and other random common stuff that seems rarer than porches in aspen town OK prices but like I said ... it's aspen
google avatar

Mihaela M.

Yelp
They have everything you need. They might be a little pricy but it's a great location for essentials and more. I always found unique little gifts... I once bought a bathing suit I still get compliments on. Their natural soaps, bath bombs, oils, little glass figurines, makeup, ... everything you can think of is there. I love spending time in there looking for "something"... and I'll find it without knowing I looked for it. I want to call them and ask how can I find the "half pint naturals" products. Can't find them online anymore... but I discovered them in Karl's pharmacy. Great spot!
google avatar

Anonymously Y.

Yelp
Its a NO FOR ME. Sorry, but the lady upstairs treats people weird. She gives me and my daughter dirty looks when we come in to buy gifts. And she is the reason i Won't be spending over $300 there again like I usally do around Christmas. Here's why.. My Aunt has bought me gifts from here since i was 9 years old!!!... I wanted to start buying my daughters gifts from here as a tradition as well. But Not Now... They act like Everything there is Super Expensive. It's same products as Walmart, lol. This shoulda been the first clue, that vibes are off.. I know the wine selections are good. But the rest of the store needs NICE' people. Except the older man in the bottom quickstop part. He is actually is really Nice, and helpful. Also had the Most Awful Experience Ever with the pharmacy there. I wont be back. So I dont mind adding Truthful opinions on here.

Yelp
Carl's is all the goodness of an old fashioned pharmacy! Lots of extra fun merch! My husband had so much fun shopping there on Dec 23,2021. Our favorite purchase is Aspen Monopoly. Even found pet supplies we needed.

Spencer G.

Yelp
Went in to just look around, found a shirt I liked and was trying it on to make sure it fit before buying it; was harassed by a worker and accused of stealing when I was just trying to see if it fits. Even though I explained that to her, she insisted I was stealing and need to buy it immediately. What a jump to make at a kid who clearly is a tourist. Avoid, store was disorganized and cramped, not to mention overpriced

Jamie B.

Yelp
I bought 5 iHealth home Covid kits from Carl's and 2 of them were dried up. NO LIQUID to perform the test. They charge over $30 per kit which is 2-3 times the national average cost!! When I took them back for a replacement, they said they could not replace an open package. How would I know they were NOT GOOD without opening them. They are taking advantage!! Not to mention the rudeness of the woman when I tried to replace the item. No compassion whatsoever!!! The insurance reimbursement is set at $12 per test. If you pay $30 for a test, you eat the $18. Carl's pharmacy has no ethics, manners, or integrity.

Yelp
Another few feet from The Emporium and Flying Circus is Carl's Pharmacy. This store is much, much more than a pharmacy. This shop actually has an upstairs. I want you to make your way to the second floor where there are souvenirs and gifts to shop. Make sure you grab a basket, you're going to need it. I especially loved the art section where I purchased myself a wonderful set of watercolor pencils and paper. This store is surprisingly affordable for Aspen. I imagine the wealthy who live here like to utilize Carl's Pharmacy like I utilize my local Walmart. You can find almost anything here. Make sure to grab a postcard to celebrate your journey. Send it to a friend or family member back home to let them know your thinking of them. Yelp
This place honestly gets a 5 for having the things that are required for a small mountain town. But I'm giving a 1 star because the lady upstairs denied my 4 year old daughter use of the bathroom because of COVID. HER FUCKING STORE WAS FULL OF PEOPLE!! Is the bathroom full of her COVID infected patients?? She suggested I walk to the Jerome, to which I replied 'she will piss herself on the way' Merry Christmas. I had her pee behind the magazine racks right next to the front door and shared my story with a few people as they walked in.

Yelp
TERRIBLE customer service. Avoid when at all possible. I bought a small overpriced toy for my son for about $8 and realized at home it was clearly defective. I took it back a few days later and was told there was nothing wrong with it and even when I proved it was flawed they refused to do anything to compensate me or my child because I did not have receipt, which I had told them I refused on purchase to save paper (big mistake, obviously), but it still had the Carl's price tag on it. They then questioned how they would know I hadn't stolen it! As if someone who can afford to live in Aspen, Co is stealing an $8 toy. Horrible experience and terrible to deal with. Will never go back unless under duress, which is sad after giving them 30 years of business.

Yelp
There is ALWAYS a reason to go to Carl's Pharmacy!!!! You need mascara? Not just drug store brand not department store quality? Got it. You need a bottle of wine as a hostess got? What kind would ya like? Forgot an activity for the kids? Need a souvenir? How about a cookbook? My kids, husband and I adore this place. I stock up on a certain lotion and lip ball from there that I can't get enough of! Beware of the register....not always the most polite it that's not why you go there!

Yelp
Carl's is the Aspen answer for everything. I need a battery, light bulb, bottle of gin, aspirin, frisbee, children's book, incense, and white out. ...Go to Carl's. I need a picture frame, plastic bowl, kite, bottle of rum, packing tape, an Aspen snow globe, soap, greeting card, mesh basket, a t-shirt, bag of chips, and a gallon of distilled water. ...Go to Carl's. I need a prescription filled, a kid's backpack, an iron, 5 hangers, more white out, a sharpie, a cape, paint thinner, a toothbrush, a vase for flowers, shampoo, garbage bags, and more shirts. ...Go to Carl's. I need to go to a store where everyone walks really slowly, the shelves are stocked so full items are exploding on the floor, and I need to pay at least 20% more than I would at a normal store for everything. ...Go to Carl's. Carl's is Aspen's combination liquor store/general store/CVS/pharmacy/souvenir shop/Staples/Bed Bath & Beyond/Ace Hardware that always had what I needed (or a version of it) and allowed me to never make more than one stop...but I sure paid a lot extra for that convenience on most items. As a self-proclaimed neat freak...it did take a little while to get my head around the overstocked & items on the floor shelf situation, but when I got sick and needed medicine, and when we ran out of packing tape three different times...Carl's became my best friend.

Yelp
Have loved this place but they really need to get rid of some of the rude staff that have been there some time. (Upstairs)
google avatar

Byron S.

Yelp
Anything you ever thought you might need, they will have it. Stopped by to grab a greeting card and was amazed with the amount of selection they had in everything. They are very helpful and gave me directions to the local post office to mail my card. The one thing they didn't sell, postage stamps!

Yelp
Ok, I gotta admit, this pharmacy is probably a 3.5, but I have a special place in my heart for mom n pop dime stores. Now, Carls is by no means a dime store...'cough- cough' but it IS Aspen, I don't expect affordability. I like the upstairs Knick knacks. Great for last minute stocking stirrers if you are up here for Xmas, & a drive to Glenwood springs target is not something you are up for. Great selection of magazines, cosmetics, drugstore stuff. A liquor store, and full service pharmacy is here too. Which brings me to my "issue" with this place. I dropped in yesterday to fill a rx. Girl told me twenty min max to wait.....one HOUR and twenty minutes later I finally got my 12 pills. WTF? Overall friendly though.
google avatar

Amanda J.

Yelp
Carl's Pharmacy is essentially a junk store. They have everything you could ever need, quite literally. Cosmetics, essential oils, alcohol, board games, souvenirs, greeting cards, and more. They are very friendly here as well. People are not kidding about how high the prices are, though. Two small magnets, a shot glass, and a deck of cards cost just over $20 with tax. None of these were anything special, but I needed them. The other things is that the store has a slight musty smell. Perfect when you need any last-minute items.
google avatar

Emk K.

Yelp
Great wine selection for a small place! Also they have everything you need in the pharmacy department!!! Super cool and authentic place

Yelp
I always love going to Carl's! Right in the heart of all of the restaurants and hotels in Aspen. Walking distance to pretty much everything. It's a bit on the expensive side, which is not a surprise. Carl's is a mixture of a pharmacy and gift shop. The first floor is for medications, groceries, beer and wine, and related items. The second floor has t-shirts, sweatshirts, magnets, batteries, toys, you name it! The staff are always inviting and knowledgeable on where everything is. Highly recommend Carl's!
google avatar

Cole B.

Yelp
Absolutely terrible customer service. They've left me standing with stuff in hand for a good 5-10 minutes while they talked before ringing me up. The cashiers are total creeps at the liquor store section. Real trashy people in my opinion.
google avatar

Mollee M.

Yelp
This isn't exactly what most would consider a pharmacy. They don't accept insurance and medicine isn't their main focus. With that being said.... I love Carl's! So many great and interesting things to see and play with. They have an excellent makeup counter (Blows the stuffy Cosbar away!) with tremendous counter staff. I recommend you buy something from the UBER exclusive Nouba line. That and Urban Decay is all I use now. Go upstairs and be ready to be floored by the sheer amount of trinkets!! So fun. Lots of fun little gifts to bring back to family. As far as being expensive...the makeup or trinkets were nicely priced and I wouldn't consider Carl's the place to go for Red Bull....go to City Market and use your Kroger/Fred Meyer/City Market/etc. discount card!
google avatar

Cassandra F.

Yelp
Cute little pharmacy in the middle of Aspen. Definitely the place to go if you need anything while you're up there. As several other reviewers said, pharmacy may not be the best name to describe this place though. It's got a little bit of everything, even a liquor store in the back. That's why I was there, I went in to grab a bottle of wine for dinner. They have a good selection of wine there, from inexpensive to very pricey.
google avatar

Xenu M.

Yelp
This place should be called: Carl's: The Pharmacy that has an oddly large wine selection. This place has everything. High end cosmetics, post cards, tons and TONS of wine, an entire upstairs filled with knick knacks, toiletries... If you left some odd, random item at home, Carl's will probably have it. Obviously, it's a little pricey, but remember where you are.

Yelp
Carls is conveniently located on Main Street next door to the Hotel Jerome. We have stopped by many times for toiletries, make up, beverages and snacks. Also a great place for Colorado souvenirs like shirts, shot glasses, key chains, mugs and magnets. The staff assigned to the back room where you can find homeopathic medicines are extrememly friendly and helpful. However, the rest of the staff upstairs and at the front are not very friendly. I guess they feel they have a captured market so they don't need to go out of their way. Although the prices are Aspen standards, Carls pretty much carries everything you may need while in town.

Central Austin F.

Yelp
They've "got it all" except for smiles. Don't expect friendly service (it totally depends on who you're talking to and in which department). They have the "Aspen Curse" which is "all customers should feel honored to pay large markups (because it's Aspen) and don't ever expect friendly service (because you're an invader and they hate visitors even though we're the reason this place exists). It's hit or miss, people, but I will say that the pharmacy was fast at transferring my prescription from my home state... even over a holiday weekend. Expect curt responses and high prices...

Yelp
I LOVE CARL'S!! Love 'em. When you are in Aspen / Snowmass there are no Walmarts, Targets, Walgreens, etc unless you drive 3+ hours. Carl's is right there on main street, and I'll be damned if you can't find everything you need: department store cosmetics! health food and supplements! crazy gifts & booze, including lots and lots of wine. The upstairs is hysterical. It is chocked full of novelty items and too many things to mention --- (from their website): Arts & Crafts, Electronics & Accessories, Sporting Goods, Housewares, Aspen Souvenirs & Gifts, DVD's & CD's, Sewing Notions, Hats, Wigs & Costumes, Picture Frames, Jewelry & Crystals, School & Art Supplies, Toys & Games, Hiking, Camping & Fishing Equipment, Bed & Bath Items, Socks & Underwear, Video Games. Yes it said wigs and costumes. Wow!!! It is bizarre, yet wonderful and you will get your shopping fix, for sure. Anyone who complains about the prices probably hasn't thought about it hard enough. :)
google avatar

Norma R.

Yelp
I have fond memories of cruising by Carl's on my bike, purchasing booze, stuffing it all in my backpack, and happily cruising away. But 2 years later, after moving here, I realize how expensive this place is! 3.50 for a Red Bull? Come on. $10 for a 6er of bud light? No way. It's expensive even by Aspen standards. I give it a halfway decent review because it has an inside waterfall and because it looks like a brauhaus in Austria.
google avatar

Demitri R.

Yelp
This is more than a Pharmacy. I would say this is a Macy's and Wine Store and a Convenience Store all wrapped up in one. They have a huge cosmetics section, and you can also find gifts here as well. They have a upstairs section with all kind of items. If your in Aspen and need something last minute dont be a stranger. And the staff is very knowledgeable on their wine selection as well.
google avatar

Luis O.

Yelp
I was visiting the area and stopped in to find a few things and had a question. The Pharmacist Stacy was very abrupt and rude and made me feel like I was bothering her by asking for something. Next time Im in town I will defiantly go to a different Pharmacy.

Holly S.

Yelp
I've been in Carl's Pharmacy a few times before while visiting Aspen, to buy a map or some sunscreen, and everyone is always friendly and helpful. They also have a wonderful selection of nice cosmetics. Today I came in because my curling comb broke last night. Not only did they have the exact tool I needed (Conair's round heated curling comb, 1.5" size), they even cut the hard plastic off for me as I'd otherwise have had to buy some scissors. So nice! They were so helpful and friendly, and their selection is great. Going upstairs for the first time, I saw that they had all kinds of toys, towels, school supplies, etc. If you need anything at all while visiting Aspen, my guess is that Carl's has it.
google avatar

Vy N.

Yelp
Of all the things to catch on a ski trip - a serious head cold caught me. Luckily Carl's pharmacy carries different options to alleviate the symptoms. Upstairs is a plethora of items from very reasonably priced sovenirs to knick-knacks... they have it all, including good service and a polite staff. I'm very happy that I stopped by.

Katie B.

Yelp
Good for medicines, make up, basic necessities and knick knacks although often over priced but whatever you do DONT buy wine here. Often corked and they're customer service is horrendous.
google avatar

Christy S.

Yelp
Ok MUST review because I chose to have a scrip filled here--quite reluctantly--based on other reviews. They DO, in fact, accept prescription insurance, with some exceptions. If you are worried have just enough medicine to get you through your vacation called in. My friend and hometown physician who called in the scrip noted that they were extraordinarily friendly AND professional. They were super fast in filling the scip and I could not have been more pleased with their pricing or service. As a frequent visitor to Aspen, I will certainly recommend and return to Carls!

Nick B.

Yelp
This is seriously the worst establishment I've ever been to.. .i walked in casually and bought a lighter because I misplaced mine, I walk outside and realize that the lighter was not working properly so I walk back in and asked if I could swap it out with a different one, the guy behind the counter looks me straight in the eye and says "I tested it before I sold it to you" just a complete and total lie, "this was 2 minutes ago and you're going to just lie to my face? You absolutely did not do that and you know it" is what I responded back with, then I guess his manager or something said that I was making a scene and needed to leave before the cops were called...look I will admit when I do wrong but I don't think asking for a $2 lighter to work properly is inherently insane ,either way please never give your hard earned money to this place, I would love to see them go out of business if these are standard practices and if the owners are reading I will take this post down and leave a good review if the two employees that were working around five o'clock on 4/6/19 were terminated, I hate being malicious but I seriously cannot believe the treatment I received...
google avatar

Ms C.

Yelp
This place is definitely a little spendy, but no more so than your average Duane Reade in New York. It's also- between hours and location- one of the most convenient stores in Aspen, and it has a little bit of everything, with a good selection of both bargain and expensive brands. They have helpful employees, too. When a product I bought turned out not to work for me, they were great (if a little bit grudging) about taking it back. I'm hoping to come back to Aspen every summer now, and Carl's has gotten a loyal customer.
google avatar

Jay A.

Yelp
Terrible attitude! Female Manager refused to take back defective toy in presence of a tearful 4-year old. Will not darken the door of this establishment again.
google avatar

Angela D.

Yelp
Champagne, cosmetics, basic toiletries, cold meds, candy, greeting cards, games and toys, sleds, souvenirs, shoe strings, paper towels, Christmas ornaments, you name it, Carl's has it! Such a charming shop!

Sasha C.

Yelp
Great store! One of the last real locally owned stores around! Pharmacy is on point and fast. Store is a bit pricey but worth it.

B J.

Yelp
We were in Snowmass for Spring Break when our daughter got sick. Our pediatrician phoned in a prescription for her at Carl's, and everything from that point on went very well. When I called to see if it were ready, the pharmacy staff knew about the prescription and said they were expecting us. At Carl's the staff was helpful, and the pharmacist really took her time to explain everything about the drug to an anxious father. Plus, Carl's had a contract with my insurance company (BCBS of TN), which was more than I had expected going to a local pharmacy. I was very pleased with the whole experience.
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
There's a lot in here! We found everything we needed - water, sunscreen, icepack, wine, chap stick, and a lighter - three trips - in that order.
google avatar

Eric K.

Yelp
This place is very small inside but has a lot of items inside. It reminds me of stores that are in japan since the aisles are so narrow and everything is compact. It's nothing special but has everything you need basically. Some of the staff are quite interesting as it looks like they have taken too much advantage of colorados new weed law haha
google avatar

Sharon M.

Yelp
This place carries everything you may need, but The hours suck! I miss CVS

Yelp
I would NEVER shop at this store again! I bought a shampoo and conditioner by Joico two days ago (over $40). I used it once and it burned my hair and made it so greasy that I actually had to go to a salon to get the product or of my hair. When I went back to the store to return the products, the manager told me that even if I had a receipt they wouldn't return because "it's not their product." Let me ask you this, what product in your actual store is actually "your product." She also said since it was opened (which it come open) she wouldn't return it. All I was asking for from the store is for a store credit to get a product that wouldn't ruin my hair. Since they are the only pharmacy in town they make it like a monopoly to have to buy from them. I will never go back here and would also recommend that you buy your products elsewhere or if you're in Aspen for a vacation to bring your own stuff from home. Regardless that I spent over $200 there a couple days ago and regardless that I have been shopping here since coming to Aspen for the last twenty years, they didn't seem to care... They obviously don't value repeat business. Their customer service and return policy is awful and I will not be coming back .Save your money and your time and don't step foot in this store.
google avatar

Yelp
Ridiculously over prices - $2.69 for a single swim diaper!? They do not sell packs of swim diapers.
google avatar

WInston F.

Yelp
The booze store is great, the pharmacy serves its purpose. They do have socks and tshirts and they are the only place to get these items. The staff are jerks!! WOuld be 5 stars if not for them.

Jane P.

Yelp
I'd stay away from Carl's if you actually need a prescription filled. They don't file with insurance and make no effort to accomodate with insurance. It made my trip to Aspen A LOT more expensive!

Linda S.

Yelp
Remember the old-fashioned General Store that used to be in every small town? This is it. Yes, it's Aspen and the prices are high, but the delight of finding that thing you never thought you could find here is wonderful. An earlier review from 2013 exaggerates the distance to Big Box stores (it's really only 45 minutes to WalMart in Glenwood Springs) - but who wants to support a retailer like WalMart? It's so important to support local businesses!
