On the Grid : Carla Mittersteig

"If you just moved to the city and you’re looking for a good bargain for your flat this is the best address for you. The place is paced with unique stuff; people gave to charity or donated on a good will. Carla Mittersteig is also a very good address for amazing furniture from the past. Every now and then you will find a beautiful gem, hidden in the big halls of the caritas organisation. Ever wanted to play the piano? Get a cheap one there and start your musical career." - Catherine Hazotte

Furnitures, books, clothes and so on. I did not really like the clothes section but they offer a great variety of furnitures.

I visited this location more out of curiosity but with a few goals in mind. The place is huge and I loved strolling through admiring everything. However, after selecting 2 second hand Ikea bath towels (retail is €9.99 each) to be told they were €6 each, I left empty handed. Huge furniture and toy selection.

Warehouse full of secondhand stuff. There re almost everything. Not so fancy, more like everyday use. The wide span space with lot of light is beautiful.

Cool place full of second hand treasures as well as rubbish. Some cool cringe stuff from the past decades. Dollhouse, Lederhosen, old school china and books and vinyl.

Really cool place! Lots of items, either furniture, cutlery, glass items, children's toys, books, clothing, even beds! A fun place to visit and maybe find unique items !

There's a sign up near the entrance to Carla saying "Second Hand, Second Chance" - it was certainly a pleasant experience shopping here. The various different sections are well laid out; I was particularly impressed by the two sections for childrens' toys, one of which actually looked like a mini toy shop. There was so much else - furniture, books, vinyl records, postcards, cutlery, clothes, glassware and prices are reasonable.

Yelp
Carla was recommended to us by so many people in Vienna as the go-to place when you're furnishing your apartment or wanting to get rid of old furniture. The warehouse is bigger than I expected and divided into clear sections which makes it easier to shop. They only take second hand furniture which has been looked after so the quality of the stuff is good (regardless of how ugly some of it is - we had a good laugh looking at some of the furniture that looked like it had been pulled out of the 70s!) But all in all a good mix of stuff and reasonably priced. We bought 2 bedside tables for 10 euros each. And got 20% off because we took them home there and then! So 8 euros each. We also got some bargains on a set of big beer mugs, some cooking utensils and egg cups. Literally 30 cents for some of this stuff. Aaaand the money goes to charity, yey! The employees (or volunteers?) were awesomely friendly and help transport your purchases to the front for you to pack into your car (or if you haven't got a car like us, the 13a bustop is literally 2 minutes walk from the front of the store.

Yelp
Looking to furnish your new home? Look no further as Caritas' Carla thrift shop has you covered. In one stop, they'll provide you with furniture, a tv, dishes, pots and pans, silverware, books, clothes, and so much more. Their prices are reasonable and everything they sell is in decent to great shape. Go early and you can find a real steal of a deal in there. The employees were all friendly and helpful. We bought some end tables and they brought them out of the building for us (to your car or to the curb as we carried them home). By taking our furniture home at the time of purchase, they have us another 20% off of their already discounted price, awesome!

Yelp
The warehouse is probably the size of 1000 m2. My impression of the place was - the the furniture were of two extremes: modern but used furniture that were really cheap (anything below €150), or the so called antique / vintage / or just very old furniture that cost a bomb (there were these dysfunctional and haunted-looking ''antique" cabinets that cost €1,500). Else, you can find shoes or TV cabinet that cost around only €20. I found a two-piece huge sofa that cost only €30. Didn't find super happy staff like what the other reviewers mentioned, but one of them did speak English. All products (or furniture) get a 20% off when you check-out, if you want your furniture delivered, a contracted delivery company take €54 per hour (first hour) and €60 for subsequent hour - counting from the time they leave Carita. You pay the delivery fee in cash to the delivery guys when they are in your house. So if you don't have a car and strong arms, you're better off getting cheap furniture at IKEA, unless the ones you found is super cheap to make it worthwhile; or you feel strongly about giving to charity. I went on Monday and had my delivery scheduled for same Friday, still earlier than IKEA, if you buy online, you have to wait 2-3 weeks for delivery, but costing less when you combine with other items. Transport - walking distance from U1 Taubstummengasse or nearer from tram #1 or #62. Lots of shops and cafes nearby, nice area.
