A Review of Il San Pietro di Positano | Hotels Above Par

"This casual, beachside eatery specialises in simple, local fare served right on the shore — think mozzarella grilled on lemon leaves and pasta dishes such as spaghetti with courgettes or clams — offering an informal alternative to the hotel’s fine-dining terrace."

This place is awesome. Clean bright store with fresh food.. their tuna and chicken salad is out of this world good. Expensive but worth it. Plenty of parking too

Google
We love this place! My only issue is that they consistently stop selling their hot sandwiches over an hour before they close. During the week, its been before 5 pm and I couldn't order a hot sandwich. I think they would get more customers at dinner time if they stayed open longer. Super frustrating.

Google
Great Italian market with pizza, coffee bar and more. Tons of food to take home and heat up, cook and eat. Great pizza, coffee, desserts and more! Go in and grab a bite or take home a meal. Staff is great, it's clean and well stocked. You must go here to check this amazing place out. No question. ❤️🍕☕🍝🥤🍰❤️

Google
I really wanted to love this place. After all, the good reviews, and it could have just been my experience. I was really looking forward to getting the Pizza and I called and placed my order for how I like to eat my Pizza and what I believe I got for takeout was their standard Pizza pie in a box. No extra sauce like I ordered it. I could get that Pizza anywhere.

TRUE STORY

Google
Carlinos is a hidden gem! Everything is always delicious and fresh. I have never had a bad experience from the sandwiches to the bakery Everything is up there with the bests. Don't listen to the minor complaints from the few Karen's that are probably never happy with anything or find something miniscule wrong that an ordinary person would not even notice. Highly recommend if you want good Italian food and great services!

Emily

Google
I love stopping in Carlino’s for a special baked treat, if I need help with hosting a get together, or for something quick for dinner. My issue with this location is allergen related and lack of awareness regarding ingredients. This is the second time I have purchased something from the bakery and checked to make sure there were no nuts in a baked good. Today it was their Halloween cupcakes. The person behind the counter assured me there were no nuts or pineapple. Lo and behold there are WALNUTS in the cupcake. No nut warning on the sign either. This is a warning to other patrons with allergies to be wary of their food made in house.

Google
Not quite what it was. Still a wide selection of imported italian items. More commercially packaged peppers etc. Hoagies are still excellent but steak sandwiches are oily. Labor costs seem to be a major factor as is with all businesses so that may be a factor in outsourcing. Breads are outstanding and they alone are worth the visit.

Google
It's a fantastic Italian market. I picked up an Italian sub to go.

Yelp
I used the catering service recently for a luncheon and could not be happier with the quality of the food and friendly employees. The Teriyaki salmon was tender and flavorful and the fruit platter was a veritable work of art. Everything was carefully packaged and beautifully presented. Will definitely book them again.

Yelp
This is my hidden gem of the beaten path... When I need an escape from work, I find my way here, to order the meatball remix sandwich and to take a slow walk through the store. Somedays, I won't shop, I'll watch my sandwich be made... Brocolli rabe and roasted red peppers go onto the flattop... sizzling while meatballs get fried up... the seeded roll sliced and a caesar spread goes on, with some provolone... the meatballs and veggies added to it and then toasted with heat a bit... Another drizzle of caesar and parm... So good, just so amazingly good... There is so me bad too, that this sandwich is so good, that I don't want to try anything else... There is always a wait for my hot food, but that's fine. Everything I've ever had from here was so good. I love making my own pasta, but if I don't feel like it, I can grab frozen or fresh pasta here. The back of the store have an amazing bitters section for my cocktails back home. As a warning and turnoff to some people, it's a pricey place. Everything is at a premium here, but so is the quality. When the best vendors want to take me out for lunch, I bring them here. We sit out front at a small table and eat the best food. Outside of Philly, this meatball remix is my favorite sandwich.

Yelp
The customer service is excellent, everyone is warm, friendly, and never makes you feel rushed. The store has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to come back. The deli meats are top notch, and the pizza is crispy, flavorful, and consistently delicious. My personal favorite is the hot honey pepperoni slice, always hits the spot!

Cristina D.

Yelp
to start off -this complaint is not about the food. What we have had there is really good especially the tomato pie. My complaint is about the customer service in the Ardmore location. Spoke to a very nice man about a week ago trying to get information on ordering a sweet tray. Told me everything I needed to know, and according to him, they could accommodate what I was asking for. Called today to place my order only to speak to a nasty snooty woman who seemed annoyed by every request I made. I was about to order the tray until she was just so negative that I told her never mind! .You have great food, but you don't have all great people that's for sure. I'm sure she chases others away as well. keep her off the phones!

Yelp
So scared of the prices. If you want to splurge on upscale quality food from Italy, here's your place. Other than the price tag, everything is amazing. The tomato pie is huge so just order the half size and it can feed like 15 people as a snack. They can cut into bite size. Italian hoagie was just okay in my opinion. They pre-make it and it sits out in the deli case. I asked them if they could make a fresh one for me hoping it'd taste as good as it looks. But it was just mediocre to me. Deli items in the case were ridiculously expensive to me... I asked for like a $4 scoop of the chicken salad and it was literally like 1 tablespoon But all the other items like their packaged goods, baked goods, bread are good investments. Definitely tomato pie. If you don't walk outta that store without a tomato pie, shame on you. It's packed with flavor though so can be on the salty side. I'd buy the whole store if I could...
google avatar

Nick A.

Yelp
I had a chance to try the tomato pie from Carlino's from a friend. Tomato pies are certainly popular around here so I had to see how it compares. It tastes good but I think I prefer Corropolese's more because it's a bit sweeter, Carlino's is more like a vegetarian pizza without the cheese. This store otherwise has a good selection of Italian goods, from cheeses to deli items in a bright space. The staff are nice snd helpful, so overall a great place to shop.

R H.

Yelp
Terrific food emporium offering a wide array of delicious Italian meals to go, sandwiches, homemade soups and very helpful staff. While a little on the pricey side, you get what you pay for. I enjoy shopping here, always come home with delicious meals and baked items

Yelp
I worked in this area for years and NEVER knew about this market until my random west philly friends brought me here a few weeks ago. Of course it was supposed to happen that way lol What I love about the market is how home grown and fresh every looks and smells. The market was pretty lively and bigger than it looks from the inside. All the food sections are organized pretty well. It was easy to find my favorite; the dessert section. I picked up some random items and ordered a meatball sub. My meatball sub was solid, nothing mind-blowing, but the fresh chunks of mozzarella on top really saved it. I love that they mae in-house bread and other things, too. I really enjoy the cupcake and cookies from their bakery section. The chocolate chip cookies are definitely top 5. I'll definitely be back to try some of their pizza and their oil and bread section for fancy wine n' cheese parties cause that's what adulting is all about after 40 I hear lol

Amy K.

Yelp
Such incredible high quality fresh food! A great neighborhood go to! Very nice staff as well!

Leslie B.

Yelp
This place is BYOB! Not Bring your own bottle, Not Bring your own Bag, but rather BRING YOUR OWN BOX. For $47, this is how you get a cake from Carlino's Market in Ardmore. Too bad they can't even afford an appropriately sized box. No good. Next time I won't even accept this. Cannot recommend this place at this point.

Yelp
Carlino's is a standby for many in the Main Line and Philly area. They offer a variety of foods--from cold "salads" to hoagies to pizza to pre-cooked meals to frozen meals--as well as other quick groceries. I recommend their salads (not their actual green salads, those suck; but their farro, bean, and pasta salads) and hoagies. One star off because their other food is incredibly salty. Their frozen soup was so salty it made my stomach sick, and the saltiness of the food is a common refrain from others. Another star off for being insanely expensive. Their frequent buyer discount is $15 off every $500 spent. On the one hand, $500 seems like a lot. On the other, it's Carlino's. You'll spend it quickly.

Yelp
I was starving for lunch and yelped the closest sandwich place. Carlino's came up with good reviews and just a couple of minutes away. I headed for it. Parking was easy at that time of day but it might be challenging at different hours. I opened the door into a patio of tables. A good sign.' The market itself is just beautiful. I walked by a display of pastries, past a coffee bar and into a deli section that included a hot sandwich area, a pizza and Stromboli station and a cold sandwich/salad section. It was fantastic. Except for the prices. More on that. After cruising around, looking at everything on what I soon learned was 'that side' of the market, I ordered the chicken salad special that included arugula and a sweet pepper jam on multigrain bread. It cost $13-plus. Yes, that is right. A chicken salad sandwich priced like an entree. It was huge (i made a meal out of each half) and it was the best chicken salad sandwich I ever ate. I am southern and I have eaten some of the best chicken salad in the country but the pepper jam game changed this sandwich. Carlinos also had all sorts of other prepared items so I picked up some keto vegetable lasagna (liked the veggies and the concept but it needed more sauce), some sort of abruzzi bolognese (good but not great) and some marinara along with some homemade mini meat raviolis (quite good). These things were pricey altho I would buy the sauce/ravioli again. I also eyed the well presented charcuterie boxes ($30 plus) and May do one of those in the future. I wish Carlinos would bring down the prices. It has some great options and I am sure slightly lower priced would bring in more people. Perhaps that is just not necessary considering how crowded it is with customers. I can only hope.

Yelp
Great food and general Italian store. However buyer beware prices are generally really high.

Elliott M.

Yelp
Just ordered a chicken wrap from the counter with JUST CHICKEN, the put bacon on my wrap and when I told them I don't eat pork they said "pick it off" I'm appalled and disgusted at the service, I am a regular here and we are also continuously disrespected over the phone when trying to order. Absolutely pathetic customer service especially for someone who's put hundreds of dollars in your pocket. Not cool. Left the sandwich on the counter, no lunch, thanks for always being reliable guys
google avatar

Amy Z.

Yelp
Picked up few items for dinner recently and also got cannoli cake, wow it was delicious! Although they are not shy with the price, but I think it's worth it to treat yourself and friends once awhile.
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly, what can you say bad about Carlino's? Nothing. If you are looking for an Italian specialty store, look no further. They just keep expanding and improving. I have been coming here for 25 years and everything is great. I have a friend who would visit me from New York York bring a cooler so she could stock up and take it back with her. Their bread and rolls are fresh and fabulous. A huge selection of cheeses, meats, and fresh pasta. There's a whole display of already prepared foods that you can buy by the pound. The tomato pie is great too. The desserts are fantastic. The cannoli and Italian cookies are the best. If you are in the area, stop by. You will not be disappointed.

Julie P.

Yelp
Very nice market good sandwiches they make. always fresh nice and clean Market recommend this place

Lauren L.

Yelp
I'm convinced you can't go wrong at Carlino's! They offer something for everyone. My favorite items are the sicilian pizza and desserts! Their cheesecake slices are homemade, huge, and fabulous. They put attention to detail in everything they make. Not to mention, the owners are so friendly and recognize me when I come in!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is so cool! We visited last weekend and I can't believe we hadn't been before. I ordered the Old Timer sandwich and my wife got a croissant breakfast sandwich, with egg and cheese. Mine was delicious and was a classic old school Italian sandwich. To our surprise, the croissant sandwich was great too! They have desserts, sandwiches, salads, soups, prepared meals, and tons of groceries. We will definitely have to come back and try some of their other awesome stuff!

Mike C.

Yelp
Its a great market. However the turnover in the front of the store is continual and many of the associates seem disinterested and unfazed. I do a big wine and cheese order every year for my Xmas, New Year's, Easter and 4th of July celebrations. Finally the they had hired an older clearly educated woman who could, read, write and communicate above a 10th grade education. She was taking care of everything the past few years making substitutions and recommendations and if course they moved her to another job. The new person is an imbecile. The store is clean, has fair prices and wonderful catering, cheese and wine selections are the best in Metro Philly.

Yelp
One of the best deli markets I've walked through in a while. Everything looked delicious. Cakes, bread, cheese, salads, prepared foods and so on. Sadly a little pricy for my wallet for anything but a splurge. Based on the first and only visit. But I will return.
google avatar

Yelp
The essence of a specialty food store. Stocked shelves of quality goods, takeout counter of Italian traditional and specialty dishes and catering. There is really nothing I have had from Carlino's that isn't Fantastic!! IMO the lasagna is the best I've ever had. Paper thin pasta, finely ground beef.....delicious.
google avatar

Kathy K.

Yelp
They have some interesting offerings but their prices are INSANE. I never had a problem paying extra for the quality here but now it's over the top and not worth it. $42 for a fruit tart. Whaaaaaaa. I got one at an excellent place in the city for $13.50. Even prettier too.
google avatar

Vaibhav M.

Yelp
Look, this isn't your local Wawa. This is a super gourmet grocery store, with tonnes of items either imported (from Italy!) or made in house. The items here are super fresh, and even the frozen items which are made in house taste great. You can find some of the usual brands of items here, but that's not really what you should be here for imho. I had one of my favourite hoagies here. The Italian was delicious (and expensive!) with cheese and meats all cut from the deli in house. The hours on weekdays aren't great, and it's a bit too pricey to go too often for me, which is literally the only reason I took a star off. But rest be assured you really do get what you pay for here. Well worth trying out!
google avatar

Mx B.

Yelp
Great food and not inexpensive. Actually leaning to pricey. for prepared dishes and rest. They'll satisfy most any pallet. Family business. Again wonderful Italian food. Packaged goods populates store very well. Bakery excellent. But pricey.

Riccardo F.

Yelp
Good spot altogether for pizza but their Colomba cake was awful. So dry and dense. Retire the baker please
google avatar

diane g.

Yelp
There is no better TOMATO PIE in the world and this is no exageration. All of the prepared food is excellent. And Italian product offereings from Italy are excellent. A total TREASURE for the Main Line.
google avatar

Jon B.

Yelp
Unbelievable that Carlino's considers this a fruit tray for 12 people. Never again. And they charged $35. It is the size of a dinner plate.
google avatar

Yelp
Carlino's Specialty Foods is just like walking into The Italian Market. Carlino's serves delicious food in a variety of areas including salads, pizzas, pastas, meats, sandwiches and their amazing desserts. From the outside Carlino's looks fairly small, but the inside is laid out in a way where they perfect the amount of space available. They recently built an indoor eating area. I came in today and bought enough food for a couple of nights of dinner. I picked up some chicken marsala, stuffed shells, ribbed steak, buttered chicken and a caprese salad. All of the food is high quality and well seasoned. Everything was cooked perfectly the chicken had the perfect amount of tenderness, the steak was cooked exactly medium-rare. I also couldn't resist picking up some desserts. I got a chocolate eclair and a chocolate chip cake. The eclair had chocolate pieces on top and the dough was nice and soft. The inside was filled with cream. It was so delicious! I had a few bites of the chocolate chip cake, which was really good! The only downside is the price. Whole Foods is cheap compared to his place. I got about two days worth of dinner and it was the same price as the National Debt. In all seriousness, it was over $100. I will return to Carlino's, but the price-point won't make it my usual Speciality Market. I think I will just stick with Gladwyne Market.

Yelp
We were up in the Ardmore area and my wife found this Italian gourmet market. From the outside it was pretty unassuming but when entering our eyes lit up. So much tasty looking morsels everywhere. It was like a food treasure hunt. We decided to grab a hot lunch here and split it. We also grabbed some stuff for dinner later. I will have to say every single thing we ate, down to the deserts was spectacular and beyond our expectations. Everything was fresh and quality. We will definitely make our way back again even though it's so far out of our way, it was awesome and beyond worth it.

Peter P.

Yelp
I write with a very specific, almost picayune, criticism. I have been going to Carlino's since the 1980s when their shop (at the same location by the Italian clubin South Ardmore) was little more than a store front. I have remained a faithful if less frequent customer as they expanded and "premiumized" their offerings. One "staple" for me has always been their pesto. No more. For the first time in possibly 2 years or so, I bought some and immediately noticed an unpleasant aftertaste, a change in texture and the same price as I last recalled. (Currently, it is $7.75; I distinctly recall it being $7.xx whenever I was last there pre-pandemic.) I will likely throw it out instead of eating it. All of which strongly indicates that, for this product, at least, out went the good and in went the cheap. No thanks. PS - I made this a 1 star review, but Yelp made it 4. Yelp is shit.

Carolyn S.

Yelp
I just ordered a stuffed crab meat over salmon... The presentation was beautiful, however the salmon smelled it taste fishy which means it's not fresh... I also ordered stuffed shells... And they were delicious... I have had a problem with a fish before in the future I thought maybe it would be better this time, but it wasn't... Just to give you a heads up.

Yelp
This place is amazing!!! I usually visit every other week. I haven't had a bad purchase yet. Today's purchase included beef stew, sausage and peppers sandwich, oversized breadstick, hoagie, and more! No sweets today. First time having soup and it was perfect on this cold day. Large cut veggies and chunks of meat made it a hearty lunch. My husband liked his sandwich. The hoagies are always good. I like the variety of meat and cheeses. The breadstick was great. It was at least a foot long and was covered in powdered cheese and seasonings. The outside eating area is ample and is nicely heated right now. The parking is iffy because the lot is small and difficult to enter/exit. Space is tight inside the market so be patient or you'll get annoyed if you're in a hurry because you'll get nowhere fast. I do recommend!!!

Yelp
Carlino's is everything Di Bruno Bros. strives to be. At heart, it's a specialty foods market with house prepared dishes and imported treats. Somehow, they manage to delight me on every visit. Starting outside, they have a sizable parking lot which earns them major points for a Main Line spot. There is also an insulated and heated porch style dining area which is perfect for enjoying their delectable delights on the spot. The place is laid out in a sensible way with salads, cold/hot sandwiches, deli, bakery, cheese, bakery, antipasto, prepared meals and frozen goods sections. While the place is small, they utilize space efficiently and manage to avoid the "overcluttered" feel. No matter which department I wander into, there's always a charismatic employee ready to assist when I'm ready. They go above and beyond so you feel welcome. I've only had one negative interaction in the dozen times I've been here, and it certainly didn't discourage further visits. The chefs here can cook. The pizza balances the delicate line between crunchy and chewy, and they have both standard and adventurous flavors but there's no bad options. Their margherita is to die for, I can't resist a slice when I want to treat myself. The guys behind the counter are always willing to add crushed hot peppers and fresh parmesan when I ask which sends their already fantastic pizza over the top. In the deli, my husband swears they make the best Italian in all of Philadelphia. I'm not sure what the magic is, but I brought him one and he repeatedly proclaimed his love while eating it. They also have a hot porchetta and chicken cutlet on seeded rolls that will whisper sweet nothings while you devour it. My favorite area is the antipasto section where house marinated cold veggies demand your attention. I'm an avid consumer of artichokes and they have at least 3-4 varieties whenever I visit. Even better, they don't serve the canned garbage that's preserved in vinegar. This is the roasted variety, leaves, stems and all floating in a blanket of infused extra virgin olive oil. Pricey, yes, but worth every cent. The rest of the store is a foodie's wonderland. I can wander for hours at risk to my bank account. While some items are reasonably priced (pizza, breads, sandwiches, soups, individual portioned desserts) the rest are largely artisanal and are priced accordingly. To give some examples: pumpkin spice caramel, Weckerly's ice cream sandwiches, homemade pastas and sauces, gingerbread maple syrup, cocktail bitters, uncured bacon jam, 5 types of switchel, 1 lb of crackled top brownies, more varieties of chocolate than you ever imagined, an array fancy cheeses and the list goes on! It is possible to leave with a $20 dinner for two, but temptation is everywhere...think of Carlino's as a dirty pleasure. Come here to delight all your senses and leave happy. Life is too short to waste on drive throughs, chain restaurants and grease pits when there's a one stop paradise in Ardmore. Live the dream today!

Yelp
Carlino's is such a staple of the Ardmore community. They have delicious homemade confections (fruit tart is our favorite), they make a mean hoagie, have plenty of prepared food to take home and reheat as well as specialty grocery items for sale. When my daughter was born my grandparents were visiting for a few days to help us out, I took my grandfather there one day because he was in the mode for a sandwich. We got some deli meats and hoagie rolls to make them at our house. He was blown away, 78 years old, lived in many places up and down the east coast and Carlino's was unlike anything he had seen or experienced before. When we got home he was so excited to tell his wife about it! "You need to see this place!" "They have everything you could want" "Floor to ceiling goods". My daughter is nearly 2 now and he still brings it up when I see him. When they visit us, Carlino's is now a mandatory stop.

Jamie M.

Yelp
Mediocre food. The subs and takeout is just ok. Very overhyped. Better off going to dibruno brothers in Ardmore. Staff there is much more friendlier and better quality food.

Bill E.

Yelp
Been shopping Carlino's for 12+ years. I now know that deli sandwiches must be unwrapped and thoroughly checked - and fixed - before leaving the store. For 10+ bucks on a roll half the size of other hoagie shops I got a skimpy product with a few shreds of lettuce, a whisper of onion, and mostly absent peppers. I couldn't taste the other seasonings. I asked for a hoagie, not a bland diet entree. Very disappointing.

Judy Y.

Yelp
I've loved Carlinos for well over 20 years, when it was just a tiny place. Today I picked up a few things, one being the Greek garden salad. While eating it in the car on the way home, I looked down and saw a piece of yellow bell pepper with a piece of a price bar code still on it. Immediately, nauseated, feeling how could this have been washed? In addition, how was it still there even after being cut up! I called to report this, and the person answering said he has to talk to the kitchen about washing vegetables. I asked how it still could be there after prep? No, apology, no offer of refund, nothing. Very disappointed..

Elizabeth Q.

Yelp
Unfortunately Carlino's missed the mark today. We are regular customers there and had a fair sized catering order for a family party today. The Caesar salad was full of lettuce that was brown on the cut ends. Very unappetizing for our guests. In addition, our catering order was to be ready at noon, but after waiting a half hour we were informed that part of our order was en route from their West Chester location. They offered to deliver the order to us and to the several other customers waiting for their catering orders. For the prices that Carlino's charges, I expect better quality food and better service. Very disappointed.

Mark R.

Yelp
5 dollars for 1 vanilla cupcake wtf! The kicker is it wasn't even good. Acme cup cakes were much better.
google avatar

Holli G.

Yelp
We went to get groceries here today. It felt very safe in the store as every employee was wearing masks and there were floor markers in order to encourage social distancing. They always have a great selection of both prepared and unprepared foods. Their pasta salad selection is especially impressive. We live in center city but will make the drive out to Ardmore from time to time because of the high food quality and friendly atmosphere.

Barbara C.

Yelp
Carlino's market never disappoints! Great food and friendly service. They never disappoint!

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
Got some cheese lasagna for guests. It was so cheesy it did not heat up well, was like one lump of mozzarella on the plate. Besides being extraordinately expensive it was tasteless as well.
google avatar

Regina M.

Yelp
If Whole Foods decided to branch out into specialty markets, it would model them completely on Carlino's Specialty Foods in Ardmore. This small marketplace is extraordinarily well designed, from the time you enter, follow a serpentine path, to when you check out, you are presented with beautifully displayed Italian foods. There are frozen foods, soups, gravies, there are dry goods, desserts, cheese, fresh bread, there's a large antipasto bar opposite their ready-to-eat foods - hot foods, salads and sandwiches, and of course cookies, cakes and other desserts. They have recently enclosed a porch in front, complete with tables and heaters, for anyone who buys prepared foods and wants to eat there. According to the staff, they do a very busy lunch. The food is high quality and delicious. We enjoyed fresh cheese ravioli and frozen meat ravioli (they didn't have any fresh at that moment). Both cooked up perfectly, with pasta that was not too thick (a common thing) and not chewy. It was a high enough quality that we could not tell which was frozen and which was fresh. That's skill. Delicious. Yes, it's pricey. It's also high quality food, made well, by a local family. I cannot say it's "as good as it gets" only because there are places in South Philly that are better, though without the atmosphere. It's definitely the best in the 'burbs, that's for sure.

Yelp
This market has every italion dish you need or want to take home they have fresh. Fruit. Deserts breads cakes

Yelp
Their pizza is NYC quality. Some of the best i've ever had for sure- make sure to get it heated up in their oven for some unimaginable crisp!

Joyce L.

Yelp
Great selection of pastries, seasonal baked goods, deli and salad counter, and hot bar!

Kathleen K.

Yelp
A special thank you to Carlino's for the gorgeous and absolutely delicious wedding cake and petite desserts! They certainly made a hit with all of our guests!!!

Saunna S.

Yelp
I didn't expect much from the spot although the community always raved about it. One day after being in the neighborhood I popped in and it's been my favorite spot ever since. It's surprising to see gourmet foods and the variety it carries. I particularly love the tomato pie and the dessert bites here, and very often have to keep away in an attempt to avoid overindulging.
