PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU EAT AT CARLI'S. Don't be fooled by the ambiance, the music or the food. Carli, himself, is an surly Puerto Rican brute who threw is staff under the bus, wouldn't take responsibility for an unfortunate mishap, and almost got into a fist fight with my brother-in-law were it not for the police that HE summoned to the restaurant to ensure we were going to pay our bill. Quick backstory: my family of 15 (age range: 18-86) was visiting over Xmas break, so I made a reservation for 6:00 at Carli's, and was charged $300 to hold it. After three hours of walking around OSJ, we arrived at the restaurant right on time to discover there was no table available. (Apparently, the host had an emergency and didn't tell anyone else about our reservation.) The woman in charge (I thought another host, but I later learned she was just a server) indicated it would be another 60-90 minutes before we'd be seated; sensing our collective frustration, she said, "look, we'll get you some drinks, you'll hang out outside, and when we can put enough tables together you'll be seated." What I heard was that the restaurant was buying us a round of drinks to make up for keeping us waiting for what turned out to be 80 minutes. At the end of the meal (it was 9:30 at this point) the bill came: $872 and NO DEDUCTIONS (they later took off the $300 deposit). When I raised the matter of buying us a round of drinks given the mixup, the restaurant kept us waiting another 20 minutes until Carli and his belligerent wife came outside to our table with clear hostility. Two minutes later the police arrived. Carli explained that a reservation is NOT a guarantee that we will be seated at a specific time, yet he couldn't explain why I was charged a $300 reservation deposit. His wife kept yelling outrageous insults at us -- my 86 year old mom was aghast! Regarding the drinks, Carli turned to his server, the woman who tried to smooth out the reservation issue early on, and yelled, "if you want to buy them a round of drinks out of your paycheck, that's fine with me! Is that what you want, to buy them drinks?!" She was mortified. And when I asked why the police were there, he said, in no uncertain terms, that it was to make sure the bill was paid. When I mentioned that I would be leaving a bad review, Carli said, "I don't give a sh*t what you do -- your review is not going to matter." My brother-in-law continued to ask him about the $300 deposit, and finally Carli started to come after him fists raised; but for the two police officers who held him back, I'm sure he would have thrown a punch. I eat at nice restaurants all the time and there are many in OSJ -- in fact, if you want a great piano bar experience, go to the Cannon Club on Calle de San Sebastián, it's always wonderful with much better ambiance! Carli's proved to be the worst dining experience I've ever had, and that goes for all 15 of us. It's shameful that someone is so arrogant about his restaurant that he ignores basic hospitality and customer service. I would urge you not to indulge this kind of behavior and eat ANYWHERE ELSE other than Carli's. I'm just bummed I didn't record a video to put on TikTok, that might have shown him! BTW, if you look at the other one-star reviews they are all about poor service and rude behavior -- As they say, the fish always stinks from the head!
