On the iconic island of Marstrand in Kungälv municipality, Carlsten Fortress stands as a construction that has truly endured the test of time. Its stone walls and commanding presence tell centuries of stories, yet the site feels alive and welcoming to visitors today. Exploring the fortress is a beautiful way to experience where nature meets history—surrounded by sea views, rugged cliffs, and the timeless architecture that once safeguarded the island. Between November and December, the fortress transforms into a festive haven, hosting the traditional Swedish julbord. Here, guests can indulge in all the decadent dishes of Swedish Christmas cuisine, from herring and salmon to saffron buns and rich desserts, in an atmosphere unlike any other. Carlsten is more than a historical landmark; it’s a place that feels like stepping into a historical or fantasy film set. Whether you come for the history, the scenery, or the seasonal celebrations, it is truly a site to be seen.

Great fort with awesome views and history. You need to buy tickets to get around the fort but free to visit around and catch breathtaking ocean views. Neatly maintained and well preserved. Camp, swim and trek. An awesome experience.

Did not purchase tickets to go inside but the exterior was cool to look at! You can hike around the castle through trails over rocks and look out to the sea! Pretty sweet!

Ive been absolutely in love with castles, forts and the likes since I was a small boy. This was extremely interesting and informative! The castle is in very good shape (of course only everything made of Rock, there are multiple floors/parts which were made of wood and sadly didnt live to see this day) But they talk about that in the "Podcast" through the castle with 28 1-2min parts. I loved the Story being told, its in multiple languages, including german, which tells you about the forts origin, how much blond and sweat it took to build and what its purpose. The ticket price was 120 Krona (ca. 11 euro) for regular grownups and 100 (ca. 9) for students, which is completly justified, as you have to keep the fort in check. Definetly Worte the Trip! There is also a small place to eat infront of it.

Outstanding views from the walls. A very well preserved fortress worthy of many pictures. Exceptional when the weather is good. Easily one the most beautiful place in Sweden. We came here during midsommar, we would have liked to visit the inside but we did not have the time, said I would come back to the very welcoming young woman at the entrance but in the end I could not, maybe next time!

Majestic castle on top of Marstands Island. It will take a 2 minute ferry ride from Mastrands Färjeläge. Two way tickets cost 34 SEK per person. No need to buy tickets in advance. Tickets available from the counter.

It’s interesting to walk around and explore the fortress. But the fact that it was used as a prison — and that they still display portraits of former inmates — makes you wonder what exactly they’re proud of. +very expensive tickets!!!

Yelp
Not enough words can be used to describe the natural wonders of Bohuslän coast, Marstrand island is the fairest of them all. Knowing it's a short 45-minute scenic drive from Gothenburg, we jumped at the opportunity to make a day trip, and what a glorious day it was. Carlsteen Fortress, along with boating culture and royal history, is what Marstrand is known for. The massive stone fortress sits atop the rocky island. It took more than 200 years to build, and was in use by the military as recent as 1990's. A guided tour is highly recommended so you can learn other fascinating stories about this fortress. Give yourself plenty of time to explore, as they are many rooms to check out and lots of climbing. The roof-top view is magnificent, those white and pastel blue, yellow, green wooden buildings start at the sea level and climb up towards the Fortress. During sailing season, imagine a view of hundreds of yachts taking part in the many international regattas here. If you happen to chat with a local (they are friendly), they are very proud of their boat (usually. boats). A must-visit. Bring you camera. This place is as pretty-as-a-postcard.

Yelp
I took a private tour by myself around Gothenburg since my husband was on a business trip. My guide and I stopped by on our way to Marstrand Island, (gorgeous!), so I only saw the fortress from the parking lot. From what I saw it was massive and parts of the stones were taken to build homes surrounding the area before they decided to preserve the history. If I ever find myself here again I would take more time to explore.

Yelp
A Classic swedish fortress. A must see for the history buff. But not on a windy day...
