Yelp
When you're visiting a new town, what's one of the things you are always inching to do? Shopping! Come on, don't pretend and say you've never had it come across your mind. Even I, a staunch advocate of "no-nonsense traveling" (a.k.a. travel for experience, not shopping!), fall into this trap every once and a while. So let me be the first to say that if you are adventuring into the Carmel, you might want to check out the Carmel Plaza Shopping Center! My girlfriend and I took a quick walk around here when we drove in and thought it was a lovely window into this gorgeous coastal town.
The Carmel Plaza Shopping Center is located in the heart of Carmel on the corner of Ocean Avenue and Mission Street. I really dig this spot for a couple reasons. For one, it's SO EASY to travel here because you can get to the shopping center within 5 minutes of Highway 1 by taking the Ocean Avenue exit and following it all the way there; Carmel Plaza is literally the first destination you'll come across in this town. Furthermore, parking actually isn't that bad despite Carmel being such a huge tourist destination; there's PLENTY of street parking EVERYWHERE, and most spots are free for two hours (at least on weekends)! If you plan on coming, I recommend checking out the shopping center when they finish renovating the first floor so you can get the full experience.
What I really enjoy about the Carmel Plaza Shopping Center is that it truly embodies the spirit of the town: It's very quaint, cute, and aesthetically pleasing. From the first to the third floor, every inch of the shopping center is absolutely gorgeous; the architecture really gives off that old-town vibe. As you can see from the pictures on Yelp, the best time to go is definitely during winter afternoons when Christmas decorations are up and lights illuminate the entire plaza.
Besides the ambiance, I find that the variety of local shops is another reason for visiting the shopping center. In this plaza, you will find art galleries, clothing stores, and even a cheese shop! My favorite was probably Carmel Coffee and Cocoa Bar, a nice little shop that had delicious Belgian Waffles (https://www.yelp.com/biz/carmel-coffee-and-cocoa-bar-carmel). If you only care about brands, don't worry because they even have an Anthropologie.
Unfortunately, the best feature about the Carmel Plaza Shopping Center is also its worst. Because the shopping center is very cute, cozy, and tiny, you are not going to find a large list of stores. Even though the map/guide notes that there are 33 different shops, you probably won't care to visit many of them.
Despite the fact that I dislike shopping during my travels, I really encourage visitors to walk around the Carmel Plaza Shopping Center. It's a really chill and peaceful place that's perfect for a morning stroll. Even though the Shopping Center is quite small, it's a great symbol of the beauty you will find at Carmel. Oh yeah, and they also have an elevator (yay ADA accessible) + NICE BATHROOMS! Thus, I give this place a "nice-su, you can take your parents here and they'll be happy" rating.
Shop well and prosper,
