On a Trip to Ireland, Author Lisa Taddeo Confronts Her Grief

"The next day I went to see the course, Carne Golf Links. This place had been built by men who had been laid off from their machine-operator jobs. Most had never played the game in their lives, which lent Carne an ungolfish, working-man air. And yet I am positive the rugged dune-scape they molded above the wild white Atlantic is the best golf course in the whole world."

Played this fab course for the first time this weekend. Every hole is unique. The views are amazing. Certainly a challenge. Called into the clubhouse for a pint and a bowl of soup after and I must say the staff in the bar and indeed the Pro Shop were very welcoming and so friendly. Will definitely be back to play one of the other courses.

I have been lucky enough to play over 20 courses in Ireland over three trips there from the states. Carne is one of my favorite courses that I have played and that includes a few courses that have hosted the Irish Open. The people at Carne including Gerry and Fiona are some of the best people you will come in contact with anywhere in the world of golf. The course itself is a Hackett masterpiece, weaving through some of the best dunes in Ireland it feels like God laid out the course and Eddie just put in the tee boxes and greens. You have to play Carne if you are heading to Ireland for a golf trip, if you don't I promise that you will regret it.

This is the ultimate Dunes golf course in the world. I have played it 3 times and am always impressed with the layout. The new routing takes advantage of the best holes. I told those who've never had a golf experience like this to beware of what's coming and they were still blown away.

Possibly the best links course I have played. Fantastic course, well layed out, challenging but not to the point of punishing. The course is in brilliant condition and the greens were immaculate,(if a little slow, but that is to be expected at this time of year). A warm welcome in the pro shop and an excellent putting green nearby to sharpen the eye all added to a fantastic days golf. I look forward to returning there hopefully sooner rather than later.

Just getting ready for bed - back at the hotel. Played the full 27 today. Almost no wind & light cloud cover. Brushed swell lines pouring in-along the surrounding beaches all afternoon. These are the most serious dunes I’ve golfed in Ireland & the architecture is exceptional. If you’re looking for top tier conditioning, proshop, dining, etc. then this is not for you. This course is for the serious, adventurous golfer only. If you favor pretentious golf & are incapable of finding the imagination that this place demands, you can look elsewhere. I’ve honestly left a piece of my heart in those dunes. I’m certain to be dreaming of these scapes for some time, to come. Tip of the cap to Gerry, Olivia & young James for helping to make my visit into the enduring memory I’ll take away. Cheers, Scott Saunders

I had such high hopes for Carne... and what it offered wasn't what I expected but it was way better. Raw and rough in patches but that is what I loved about it. This course really feels like you're in another world. Certain areas are in need of some rain, but I can only imagine how great this place would be coming out of winter. This is a true test of links golf with great elevation varity. You have to play a variety of shots with wind always at the forefront of the mind, and this is this style of course I love playing. I really hope to get back here one day. Staff are lovely and the cat in the men's locker room is cute and will appreciate a pat.

Wonderful and super challenging course with majestic views and massive dunes. The Chairman himself Gerry Maguire engaged every player, and was accommodating to let us take a buggy. My 75 year old Dad with a hip replacement would not have been able to walk this track. We can't thank Gerry, Sara, and Ian enough for making us feel so welcome!

Situated on the far west coast of Ireland, Carne Golf Links overlooks Blacksod Bay and the Atlantic Islands of Innis. The course was designed by the country's most famous course architect, Eddie Hackett. It was his last course and many say it is his greatest challenge. The golf course is characterized by the monumental sand dunes that cover its landscape. They were used to create elevated tees, providing golfers with a glimpse of the impending challenges. The layout offers a variety of interesting holes that each have a unique character. The range is there but it's shag your own ball Caddies are available and the curse offers full services The Hackett course is their main course but they also have a newer nine hole course that should be fun when it fully matures Pro shop and club house is a little sparse and needs a touchup but this course definitely has an "old world" feel despite the fact that it opened in 2005.
