On a Trip to Ireland, Author Lisa Taddeo Confronts Her Grief

"The next day I went to see the course, Carne Golf Links. This place had been built by men who had been laid off from their machine-operator jobs. Most had never played the game in their lives, which lent Carne an ungolfish, working-man air. And yet I am positive the rugged dune-scape they molded above the wild white Atlantic is the best golf course in the whole world."

Played @ Carne Golf Links a few days over the last week. SPECTACULAR links course, and I've played alot of them in Ireland and Scotland. Incredible sight lines. Course in great condition thanks to excellent greenskeeping work after a tough weather winter and spring. Very good. The staff, members, and people at Carne are incredible. Much thanks to them for their kind welcome. Don't miss the seafood chowder and a great pint of Guinness in the clubhouse after. Definitely on my "must return to play" list.

What an unbelievable place. Gerry is a great host and the golf course is very special. Try to play it with somebody that has played it before to get the full experience. Dinner and drinks were top notch to cap off a wonderful day at Carne. I'll be back.

Go to Carne. Play both routings. Have a few pints on the porch over looking the dunes. Stay in Bellemullet and go to McDonnels. No Irish golf trip is complete without this spiritual links experience. The hospitality and conditioning were top notch. The links are wild running through dramatic dune land with ocean and farm views all around. If you love golf you simply must go to experience this magical place. Words will not do it justice. Special thanks to Jamie R., the international member who guided me around for the day. Great ambassador for Carne.

Absolutely astounding Links golf course (Wild Atlantic Dunes - Played as separate 9s) to play, with quite some scenic views of the surroundings, but as well onto the Sea/Beach itself on holes 3/4/5; apparently, the wind will also be blowing the strongest along those holes :) While the starting holes on 'White' and 'Orange' are far from exciting, the rest of the golf course will not only teach you a lesson (in how quickly you can loose many balls) but it will give you an unforgettable experience into the Links golf: sand dunes overgrown with the thickest grass, many holes without visibility of the fairway (and sometimes the green is even partially hidden - Hole 10), and 'wavy' greens that will drive you crazy. The fairways and the greens are in outstanding condition. My rating of 4 is only given because of the tee boxes, that are uneven and, on most tee boxes, with little grass to be found; it'd be appreciated to have this improved, especially since the first shot on each hole is of utmost importance to not loose it right away.

Never fail to have fun going around Carne. Played the Wild Atlantic Dunes, then had a lovely lunch and a couple of pints before playing the back 9 of Hackett. Already looking forward to my next trip. Staff were all lovely as always

What an absolutely magnificent golf course. A beautiful property carved into spectacular sand dunes that will more than challenge any golfer. Cormac was an amazing caddie and made the round that much more enjoyable. Carne is a must play if you are in County Mayo.

Played this fab course for the first time this weekend. Every hole is unique. The views are amazing. Certainly a challenge. Called into the clubhouse for a pint and a bowl of soup after and I must say the staff in the bar and indeed the Pro Shop were very welcoming and so friendly. Will definitely be back to play one of the other courses.

Travelled a long way to play this course, and was very hyped. The course layouts are fantastic, especially the Kilmore 9. The greens were super consistent and nice to putt on, I like that they were a little slower to account for the extreme wind. The members were very welcoming, and the staff in the bar were excellent. Where the criticism comes for me is from a service point of view on the golf operations side of things, and maybe I just had a bad day. I was initially overcharged 65 euro, with their system not acknowledging my deposit paid. I was then waiting for my playing partner to show up, standing by the putting green awaiting his arrival and it took me going into the shop to follow up only to find out the guy had cancelled and I was playing alone and free to go to the tee. Then, at the turn I was standing on the 10th tee whilst some lads had jumped onto the course in front of me, and once again I had to inform the guy in the shop of some trespassers who were affecting play. Maybe it was a bad day, we all have them, this was just my experience. My final issue was with some of the playing surfaces. Carne is known for being a bit wooly around the edges as a part of its charm, although tee surfaces that are basically sand, and tyre tracks killing the grass down to sand in the playing areas at the front of greens is an issue for me considering the price of admission.

Yelp
Situated on the far west coast of Ireland, Carne Golf Links overlooks Blacksod Bay and the Atlantic Islands of Innis. The course was designed by the country's most famous course architect, Eddie Hackett. It was his last course and many say it is his greatest challenge. The golf course is characterized by the monumental sand dunes that cover its landscape. They were used to create elevated tees, providing golfers with a glimpse of the impending challenges. The layout offers a variety of interesting holes that each have a unique character. The range is there but it's shag your own ball Caddies are available and the curse offers full services The Hackett course is their main course but they also have a newer nine hole course that should be fun when it fully matures Pro shop and club house is a little sparse and needs a touchup but this course definitely has an "old world" feel despite the fact that it opened in 2005.
