Overpriced for what they offer. We were there around 10:00 and had expected a "bakery" to have baked items but it was limited to cupcakes in a cooler. I wanted to go somewhere else but we were hungry and didnt have time to go be picky. The server was very friendly and said she could do a ham and cheese croissant even though it wasnt on the menu. I should have asked the price but assumed it wouldn't be much since it's just ham, cheese, and a croissant. So I ordered a ham & cheese croissant and potato salad. The croissant was ok, nothing special, which was fine. The potato salad was surprisingly bland. When I got the check I was surprised to see that my croissant ended up being over $18 because the croissant was an upcharge from a similar item on the menu. It was definitely not worth the price and I was pretty annoyed that the server suggested something without mentioning that it would cost extra. My wife said her quiche was good but also felt like it was not worth the price. Overall we were disappointed in how much our food cost for what we got. I would definitely not eat here again.

Google
A good brunch experience for all of us here. Team effort by staff & manager in checking in on us during our visit. The food came out faster than I expected too. I had the crab cake & shrimp sandwich and enjoyed every bite. My picture here could have been better taken - sorry about that.

Google
The food was excellent. The service was a bit slow. Although it was a beautiful day out, the tables could use some umbrellas to provide coverage from the sun.

Google
Great food and service…nice and cozy atmosphere on a cold Yorktown day. Thanks Carrot Tree!

Robert

Google
Absolutely wonderful! Food and service was fantastic! Early Spring weather was great for eating outdoors!

Google
Came in to try a baked good as an out of towner I was excited to patron the shop. But I was not treated very nice. I asked for a cupcake from the case and was directed to take one from the cooler in the lobby “ cause it was the same thing “ it was clearly not the same thing. I can’t understand why giving me the bake good I requested was an issue.

Google
Chicken salad on the croissant was so refreshing, great potato salad & I enjoyed the cute patio seating. There is indoor seating, but it’s a small area.

Google
The people are really polite. The food is amazing and at an affordable price. The portion size guarantees you won't be hungry leaving. (I ate the other side of the wrap in the picture) I highly recommend this as a lunch stop if you're coming to the shops or even in the area!

Yelp
We revisited the carrot tree restaurant recently and again, we loved the charm of this small cozy place. We got the turkey cranberry wrap again and this time I had the roast beef sandwich with horseradish dressing. Both sandwiches were excellent but, this time we thought they overdid it with the mayonnaise so it made for a very messy sandwich experience. Nevertheless, we will always enjoy returning here to a warm friendly place.

Yelp
You never know about the quality of restaurants in tourist areas that get a lot of new visitors and not dependent on repeat business. Fortunately for those visiting Yorktown, Carrot Tree Kitchens is an outstanding option. The food is excellent and you really feel comfortable, with super-friendly service. I had the Brunswick Stew which was on the specials menu. This is apparently some specialty from area and was really good, the broth had a rich flavor with some good vegetables. Others had sandwiches and also loved them, particularly the ham and Swiss. I also had some of the hummus plate which was really tasty. Then you really need to save room for dessert. I had one of the cupcakes and it was absolutely delicious. Then people also loved the slices of cake. This is definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
A delicious little sandwich shop not far from the Yorktown Museum. Free parking across the street in the little garage. We had planned on lunch at the museum cafe, but when we realized it was just prepared cold sandwiches in the case, we decided to go down the road. I had the Mason Dixon sandwich, which was warm and fabulous. They don't have a kids menu per se, but the waitress said they could make a grilled cheese which was perfect. My husband got the Strawberry Fields sandwich which is a limited time spring menu item. He loved it! The sides are unique: carrot salad, orzo salad and some other more standard fare like potato salad and cole slaw.

John B.

Yelp
Good food, good service, fair price and nice outdoor setting. Menu mix with the right combination of protein and vegetables that made each plate great.

Mary L.

Yelp
best lunch we have had in ages! The roast beef sandwich was excellent. The 1601 salad was a delectable sampler. Don't leave without trying the pickled carrots. Simply the best!

Tom R.

Yelp
Great little place to grab lunch. It didn't look like much but the food was a very nice surprise.

Nanci K.

Yelp
My boys and I had visited the original Carrot Tree back in 2012, so it was really fun to take some other family to eat lunch here. They've moved into another building, but they've got the same folks working and same menu. Our lunch was just as good as it was 10 years ago- hearty sandwiches, delicious salads and terrific desserts. The carrot cake was as good as my mom's & hers is really good. Definitely a lovely lunch spot in Yorktown!

Maureen F.

Yelp
The food was very good. I loved the carrot salad and the sandwiches were delicious. I took my 3 grandkids for lunch and it was very pricy for a quick lunch. 3 lemonades and 4 sandwiches with tip was $93. Im wondering what the threshold for raising prices is. $16 for a chicken club wrap with chips. They didn't even offer fries. We also were served on plastic disposable plates. For a quick lunch after the beach, I think it's just too expensive for what it was. Sandwiches were good but really? The service was fine but you do have to pay inside or use a QR code so nothing special there.

Pamela G.

Yelp
The location is great and the food is pretty good for a to go type place. They use quality products.

Jamie A.

Yelp
This little nugget is pure gold. Such tasty homemade food and friendly staff! I had the Abe Lincoln wrap with a side of potato salad and it was seriously sooo yummy. The "zippy" sauce on it was something I could drink a gallon of! My husband had the Good Dad sandwich with a side of potato chips and it was delicious. For my kiddos we had two sides, potato salad and orzo pasta salad. Both were so yummy and the kids gobbled them down quickly. The portions were perfect and generous, and don't even get me started on the decadent cake. We had the carrot cake and chocolate cake and if I wasn't worried about gaining 1000lbs I'd have bought a whole cake of each! They had some seating indoors but we had decent weather (late December) so enjoyed a sunny outdoor table. Will definitely come here again when I'm in town.

Sarah S.

Yelp
My dad's birthday was coming up quickly and I desperately needed a carrot cake. The lady who normally makes make cake was out of town and I needed a second option short notice. I reached out to carrot tree and they were able to secure my order for pick up at the yorktown location with no problems at all. I went to pick it up just before they opened and I was let in, I paid, and left. All quick and simple. My dad LOVED his cake and I was so happy!!

Shelley B.

Yelp
What an absolutely adorable little cafe right in the heart of Yorktown! Very quaint inside with a just a few tables and more outside. Very personable staff. They've got a good selection of yummy sandwiches, wraps, and deli style salads and some very tempting desserts. Had the turkey, melted Brie, and strawberry special on the flakiest croissant with their carrot salad. Both were excellent! Definitely plan to return to try out their other offerings!

Michael M.

Yelp
I live a mile away from the main Carrot Tree location in Williamsburg, and we've eaten there many times. I don't know why, but the experience at this location is always somehow... different. Lackluster. They have far fewer options, and strange rules about sitting to eat and who may ring up your order. It just always feels like this location is run by the JV squad. Today, a couple came on to order lunch and were told that the kitchen had closed, an hour and fifteen minutes before the posted closing time. It's never bad here, per se, but often odd and nonsensical.

Alison M.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my lunch at this cute little restaurant. There is indoor and outdoor patio seating depending on the weather and your preference. We were quickly greeted and chose the table we wanted. Our server was attentive and polite the entire time. The menu has a lot of options on it - enough to please several different tastes which is always something I'm looking for. We chose the hummus starter bc we were starving and needed something - it was out pretty quickly with some delicious fresh hummus and assorted fresh, crunchy veggies like cherry tomatoes, slices carrots and cucumbers, sliced red onion, lettuce, olives and delicious warm, toasted pita slices. Yum. It was a great start. Our main entrees were out pretty quickly as well. I chose the chicken salad wrap bc, I love chicken salad and love to try new takes on it. This one was pretty standard but was served as a wrap on a tomato wheat wrap with tomato, lettuce and bacon. It was really good. My date got the BBQ platter which had slaw, some fresh crunchy veggies, potato salad and a scoop of pulled pork with a bun. The potato salad, also served with mine as you got a choice of a few sides, was really fresh-made and delicious. I loved it. I also ordered one of their buttermilk biscuits for $5. There are a few options and the one I chose was served warm and toasty with turkey, brie and cranberry. It was salty and sweet and warm and delicious. Loved it! They had some fresh-made baked goodies and large cupcakes and carrot cake but I have eaten out a ton lately and decided to pass. I'm sure they were good. Next time!

Yelp
On an unusually warm April, I took my wife to Carrot Tree for lunch while visiting Yorktown. We initially had to sit in the sun, but the waitress allowed us to move to a table with an umbrella when it was vacated. I got the egg salad wrap with bacon and pasta salad. The wrap was overstuffed and tasty. You definitely get your money worth! We also stayed for a dessert. I got a raspberry Linder bar. I was honestly enjoying by my dessert to much to find out what my wife ordered. We'll definitely return when we're again in the area.

Justin M.

Yelp
Nice outdoor seating for quick lunch service. Food was fairly fresh. Had the bbq sandwich. Super causal and suitable but not impressive except for the service which was fast and friendly. Coffee is weak. Skip it.

Cindy C.

Yelp
Having tried the food when I lived in the area several years ago I was super excited to go back. I was majorly disappointed as the the quality of the food did not justify the price. I had the Colonial Gardener and did not finish it. They had me at spinach and mushroom croquette but sadly it was dry and glavorless. 3 stars because my teen enjoyed his sandwich and staff was courteous. Might give the Williamsburg location a try.

Jay T.

Yelp
I have been eating at one or the other of the Carrot Tree locations for decades, and have never once been disappointed with anything they serve. Today I decided to try their Colonial Gardener; a spinach and mushroom croquette with special sauce (it's lit) on a bed of lettuce and tomato slices with some homemade pita chips and hummus, and a side of their signature carrot salad. My only regret is not leaving room for dessert. I was treating a couple of fellow museum educators, and our 3 entrees, their two soft drinks, and the 20% gratuity they included automatically because we were in a group of 8 people came to a grand total of $40 and change. Definitely worth it!

Vicki E.

Yelp
Such a nice little place with outside seating in the courtyard. Our waitress was very pleasant and efficient. The food was good!

Beth M.

Yelp
We stopped in at Carrot Tree after a few hours exploring Yorktown and it seemed like it would be perfect for a quick lunch. So let me start with the positive: it was fairly quick and delicious and the menu gave plenty of choices. I had a delightful chicken salad, bacon wrap and a side of carrot salad; I could've eaten a giant bowl of that Carrot salad it was so good! My son had a pimento cheese croissant and cole slaw and it was huge! My dad had a roast beef wrap and was also extremely pleased. The issue was that upon arrival we had to go inside and wait for a server to seat us, and then she didn't give us a menu, and then when she did she gave us approximately 37 seconds to review said menu before asking if we were ready. She then left and didn't return for like 10 minutes and haphazardly threw our silverware on the table. After all that, the woman I presume is the owner took over and brought our meals, checked on us, and brought our check in much more polite and timely manner. So I give it 3.5 stars because it really was a perfect lunch spot, but the service could use some help.

Mike M.

Yelp
In for a quick treat. Both, the Carrot Cake and the Peacan Bars were great. Thank you

K J.

Yelp
I ordered a 14" carrot cake for an adult birthday party and picked it up the day of the party in the Yorktown shop location. They said it would feed 40-45 people which I doubted, but it really will. It was huge, heavy (to carry, not on the stomach), moist and without a doubt the best carrot cake I've ever eaten! My guests thought so, too. I'd eaten their carrot cake before, but this was better than I remembered. Thank you to the bakers in Williamsburg; you do a wonderful job!

Kristine D.

Yelp
So good! I wouldn't have thought to come here, but while playing tourists in this town not too far from us, we were trying to decide where to have lunch. Glad we chose this spot. It's a cafe, a deli, and bakery. There is outdoor seating, and inside there are only six tables! Small but it gets the job done. It's bright inside and decorated with what else? Carrots galore! See one of my pics and you'll see the story behind their name. :) It's also on their menu. Long story short(ish), they sell a lot of wraps here, sandwiches, and biscuits, sides, and some pastries (cookies, cakes, cupcakes.) They are known for their carrot cake, which was probably my least favorite thing. BUT, everything else was GREAT, including service! Today, we tried the Southern Sampler - a scoop of their delicious ham salad - so simple but so tasty, I wanted to put the whole scoop in my mouth at one time! Who needs crackers?! Also a scoop of their Pimento Cheese. *drooling* thinking about it again. I would return for this alone! Fiancé had the BBQ platter which was good, and I had the Biscuit with Pimento cheese & ham, and their potato salad. Yummmmm! Such a great lunch! They also sell their Pimento Cheese, Chicken, Ham, or Chick Pea Salad in containers to go. I told the lady helping us that I would have taken some home but we don't have a cooler & still had to go to the beach, etc. She enthusiastically offered to pack it with ice if I wanted, but I declined and told her we would be in the area at least a few more hours but that we would be back, and we definitely will. Check this place out & promise me you'll get the Southern Sampler to start with. This place can't be beat with their prices, tasty food, and great service!

Rumit P.

Yelp
Mediocre service (no smile, minimal eye contact, and low energy), very small selection of baked goods, and just okay-tasting carrot cupcake (dry, cold, and not very fresh). Also, despite partnering with AAA, they said they don't offer any AAA discounts. I'm sure there are better places in the area, but this was convenient and not a national chain like the Ben & Jerry's across the street, but I am not sure they have quality control evaluators at this small shop.

Andrew A.

Yelp
Great food but the head lady there was in a bad mood. I would come again but not if she is around. Also there was room for seating, but some people who paid for take away and tipped were asked not to sit down at the outdoor seats which was odd and unwelcoming.

Abigail L.

Yelp
Most definitely one of my favorite joints to eat. You cannot go with larger parties (4+), but you should know this in advance. If you do, you can order and go wander Yorktown. The food is sandwiches or quiches. I alway like the croquette they serve with the special sauce (so Abe Lincoln is my jam). I really love their soups too. But the best part of carrot tree is the desserts: duh a carrot cake! The wait staff are flexible with my needs, but I think it is because they know me. So I am very thankful for their investment in me as a longterm customer. One request, I really wish that they could expand their menu (similar to the larger Carrot Tree in Jamestown area). But it is not their fault, thanks to their neighboring restaurants who control this. Also they are trying to be more environmental friendly with togo boxes of sugar cane and limiting plastics - keep pushing that effort!

Perry G.

Yelp
I never really thought of Virginia as a "southern" state, but having spent a long weekend here in April, the southern flavour of the state really came through on a couple of occasions. That flavour was the most evident at Carrot Tree Kitchen, especially the pulled pork. It was a gorgeous afternoon and we were lucky to get a table outside (it was only a five minute wait for a table, despite a packed patio. We took a look at the menu before we sat down (we were really hungry!) and ordered as soon as the server came over with utensils and menus. I ordered the Hogg Island BBQ Platter and it was amazing. The slow cooked pork was tender with the perfect blend of sweet and hot, served warm with a buttery burger bun, fresh slaw and potato salad. I liked the DIY approach to a pulled pork sandwich, it let me put just the right amount of crunchy coleslaw in the sandwich for a great lunch treat. The portion size looked a little small when it came out, but it turned out to be perfect size. Eating off plastic plates seemed a bit odd though (and not environmentally friendly) for a cafe. My wife had the Mediterranean melt, bursting with fresh Mediterranean flavours of olive, feta and onion. Served warm, it was a healthy version of a personal pan pizza and was surprisingly filling. Although the dessert menu looked tempting, we passed. We will be back for the Carrot Cake that apparently made the cafe famous in the first place. Long live the south!

Mary E.

Yelp
This is my favorite restaurant in Yorktown. I especially like the wraps and enjoy eating outside when the weather is nice. The food is always fresh and the service is excellent.

Emily H.

Yelp
I never write reviews but I do this in hopes of saving someones money and time. I paid $15/sandwich. I got chicken salad on a croissant that was beyond bland. Also got a club wrap it has a ton of lunch meat but it just shouldn't be $15. They're overpriced. The bakery items all look great maybe they should just do that. I paid $42 for a cookie, 2 sandwiches and some water. It just wasn't worth it. $10/sandwich aligns we'll with the quality in my opinion.

Ashley J.

Yelp
I ordered the spanakopita and hummus. My family ordered the quinoa salad and the make your own wraps. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I liked the varied menu and there was Mary vegetarian options. I don't really like places that add a 20% gratuities for groups (7 or larger) and there was minimal seating. The key lime pie was amazing.

Rebecca M.

Yelp
We were looking forward to visiting this location due to our desire to eat light and healthy. First, they were not serving the menu they gave us. None of the soups or stews were available, leaving one gluten free option, the 1607 Sampler. Enjoyable! The ham salad was the favorite. Our server was odd. She made an audible noise when we ordered only water and tried to remove my plate twice, while I was still eating. They still weren't closing for an hour but the impression was that they were ready to leave as soon as we were finished. The bathroom had no toilet paper and the overall environment was not welcoming or happy. We were relatively satisfied with our meals but we were not overly impressed with the experience.

D L.

Yelp
Waited about twenty minutes for two biscuits (The Jefferson and The Jamestown) but man... so worth the wait! Found a table behind the adjacent jewelry shop where the wife and I enjoyed the combination of flavors that were produced in the Carrot Tree's tiny, one cook, kitchen! Delicious food in a unique setting! Stop by. Be prepared to wait. But know it will be worth it!

Local E.

Yelp
With several wraps, salads, and a few EXCELLENT biscuits on the menu, I'd only suggest that they consider adding two or three kid-friendly items (seeing as how a lot of the foot traffic are probably tourists). E.g.: a PB&J? Chicken nuggets? Jam on a biscuit? It is very fairly priced and is a welcome alternative to the pricey stuff nearby. We picked up on a little micro-management here and there: Do Not Eat Takeout At Our Tables! But, besides the lack of kidstuff at a place that does have a highchair, it was a good find.

Amy C.

Yelp
We're visiting here from Southern California. Family suggested we tour Yorktown. All the walking made us hungry so we decided to stop here. We're so glad we did! I ordered the Smithfield croissant and hubby ordered the All American wrap and we both had the side of potato salad. Everything was delicious and the customer service was excellent! Their carrot cake was awesome. I agree with my hubby that it's one of the best we've tasted! I would love to come back if ever in the area again. I would not hesitate recommending this cute little eatery.

Chris M.

Yelp
It was great to find a good Vegan option! Hummus wrap at Yorktown beach. Great outside seating.

May M.

Yelp
Staff and food are amazing. It's great living here and coming to these little joints with outside seating. Pleasant crowds

Shelby B.

Yelp
Carrot everything! I've been here twice and will probably not come again. The service was mediocre, and although I arrived for lunch both times, they were out of most of their food both times, highly limiting the selection. The food that was available was not especially memorable, and most of it was dry and tasteless. Limited seating, and if it is cold or rainy, you may have to stand to eat.

Yvonne O.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this place. It is tiny - so make sure you are prepared to sit outside in heat if there is a crowd! We were lucky that we got there early on a Sunday for lunch and could sit inside. We ordered a slew of foods for the family - fruit bowl, quiche of the day, ham biscuit, pulled pork plate and everything was delicious. The kids loved it and loved looking at the pretty deserts in the cases as well. The ham biscuits ended up being some of the best of our whole trip! All of the meal, with juices and sodas was only about $40.

Andrew G.

Yelp
Wonderful food, friendly and efficient staff who will serve you with a smile . Comfortable patio seating gives you a view of the activity in Yorktown. Nice to have another carrot tree location :)

Patty P.

Yelp
Yummmm this place is outstanding in food, service, hardly any Wait time... Low cost for FRESH FOOD, very healthy. A must go to to eat!!!! Don't miss out on this gem!!!!!

Rochelle S.

Yelp
OH, MY, GOSH!!! This is really an amazing place! From the service to the ambiance to the food. Stopped in with 2 other co-workers and was not disappointed. I ordered their spinach and cheddar quiche and can say I've never had anything so good. The crust literally melts in the mouth and has a beautiful made from scratch taste. They even had a full quiche in the 'take away' case, that would have come with me if I wasn't staying at a local hotel. The wraps are huge! Definitely enough to fill up even the hungriest of guests, or a perfect opportunity to eat half and have the other for a snack later on in the day. The sides were plentiful from chickpea salad, carrot salad and my favorite, the potato salad. All available in the take away case for a quick glance if this is your first time at the restaurant. If you really want a treat to eat there, or take away, stop by and have a look at the desert options. The chocolate cake, carrot cake, cupcakes, cookies and brownies will leave the most die hard sweet tooth happy and satisfied. I can happily say that this will be my lunch stop every day while I'm here in town.

Missy U.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our lunch here. I had the ham biscuit and Brunswick stew. Both were so delicious. My daughter had the same but with the tomato basil soup. This was one of the best tomato soups I've ever had. My husband had the barbecue sandwich and he said it was delicious which says a lot coming from a barbecue connoisseur. It's a small restaurant with few tables but the food is all made to order. My only complaint is that all the sandwiches are made as wraps. I really dislike wraps.

FA F.

Yelp
This is a quaint little bistro on the Riverwalk. The biscuits were buttery goodness, like you're eating mana from Heaven is God was a Southern Grandma. Then you order the Southern sampler, and your tastebuds thank you for the ham salad and pimento cheese. Just when you think you're done, you order a slice of the carrot cake...with two forks...to share. This was the best carrot cake I've had. It was moist and a perfect blend of spice and sweet. The pineapple mixed into the batter helps keep that moistness, and I was hogging that cake like I was Golem from the Hobbit. I made it my precious, and I'm going back for more...just for me. One fork. Many slices.

Diane B.

Yelp
Stopped at their Yorktown location because of the reviews but I can say I would probably not eat here again. The dining area is EXTREMELY tiny; there are six small two-seater tables and one larger round top. Service was good but food wasn't amazing. I ordered the Strawberry Turkey Croissant with potato salad as a side and my hubby chose the Hogg Island BBQ platter. Our food was just average. Pretty basic and a bit underwhelming. Unfortunately I bit into a piece of potato that had a rotten center so the moldy rotten taste stayed in my mouth and I didn't feel like finishing the rest of my sandwich. Not a great experience.

Martha F.

Yelp
Good fresh salads, nice servers, outdoor tables, the prettiest day in June. This was a wonderful choice for lunch in pretty Yorktown.

Zach B.

Yelp
I was going for a walk along the beach and saw their sign for Apple cider. I popped in and am glad I did! Lovely little place and very nice service. I had the General Grant (Turkey wrap with cranberries and walnuts) with a chickpea quinoa salad. Delicious! Definitely will be frequenting here from now on.

Renee D.

Yelp
Wonderful service, excellent meal, and the best carrot cake I have ever had! Plus, you can't beat the pricing!

Jon S.

Yelp
This small sandwich and dessert shop is big on flavor. We, a family group of 13, invaded earlier this week, and had a great lunch. From the hummus, to tomato basil soup, to the US Grant wrap, everyone loved their meals! US Grant was perfect: smokey turkey breast, blue cheese, cranberries and greens! We had to try the eponymous Carrot Cake and chocolate cake for dessert. Brought it home, and they both were remarkable! If it were closer we would have gone back for muffins!

Duane D.

Yelp
Simple Southern Deliciousness for lunch this afternoon at Carrot Tree Kitchens in Yorktown at Riverwalk Landing! No fancy plateware needed as long as the flavors are true to the roots and the Southern Sampler of Pimiento Cheese and Ham Salad with Crackers is an excellent start. The Hogg Island BBQ Platter With coleslaw and red bliss potato salad with dill looks so unassuming but is well balanced. The BBQ has good balance of vinegar and sweetness and of course major points for pairing it with a potato roll! The coleslaw was just how I like it. Not mayo thick and with good crunch and sweetness. The Potatoes had a good bite to them with just the right amount of dill where it was not overpowering. The cupcake was a touch on the dry side but the icing was surprisingly not cloyingly sweet and matched the flavor of the cake itself with raisins added. Great flavor, simple presentation done right
