Where to Stay Near Redwood National Park | Condé Nast Traveler

"In Eureka, I stayed among four Victorian buildings—the Hotel Carter, the Carter House, the Carter Cottage and the Bell Cottage—that blend rich Victorian architecture with contemporary furnishings and local art; Hotel Carter and Carter House rooms can include flat‑screen TVs and whirlpool spa tubs, the cottages have full kitchens, and the on‑site Restaurant 301 serves a weekly tasting menu with an extensive wine list alongside breakfast and a daily glass of wine." - Jill K. We love the Carter House Inn for many reasons. Wonderful ambiance! Not a chain hotel. Charming Rooms, great beds, lovely linnens. Breakfast is included and it is ample and very good. The staff- simply the best. We have stayed at the Carter House several times in the last couple of years, always polite and kind staff. Troy, one of the front desk employees, so nice and patient. The bar- simply must visit! Let the bar tender tell you about a very special feature!!

The whole place is warm and welcoming. The rooms are comfy and high quality. The staff was very understanding of my chihuahua's disposition--they even brought him bacon for breakfast! I felt that they wanted both my dog and myself to feel welcome. Definitely glad I came here!

Everyone was so attuned to making a great guest experience! We were so impressed. There's even a generous wine and cheese reception every evening. They kept coming around with the bottles of red and white and the pours were generous.||The room was large, clean and well appointed. With a gas fireplace!

Beautiful boutique hotel in the style of the classic Victorian build with all the amenities. Rooms were beautifully furnished with tasteful antiquey pieces. Lots of thoughtful touches in the room such as a water carafe that is refilled daily. Our suite had two fireplaces and a very large and deep two person jacuzzi bathtub, I'd love to get the brand of tub. Staff is small but absolutely wonderful, so kind in every way, and very attentive to our needs. The lobby is cute and comfortable, set up for visiting and I saw many people using the area to eat the bar appetizers throughout our stay. The area is downtown Eureka, which is beautiful but be warned it is a "downtown" area, but still felt very safe to walk around in during the day and evenings, and the hotel is right next to the harbor which is just beautiful to see in the mornings. There's plenty of parking in front of, and behind, the hotel and I felt safe parking my car in the area (although the hotel does warn against leaving bags in your vehicle). I think the thing that really adds that extra wonderful value to the stay is the complimentary breakfast. They put on a beautiful continental spread and offer a hot meal selection on top of it. Their dinner was wonderful as well, a beautiful French menu selection. Highly recommend making a reservation.

Google
Boutique hotel with comfortable lobby. Check in is at a sit down desk. Friendly staff and lovely ambiance.|We were upgraded to room 201 which is a premium room with bay window sitting area and a gas fireplace. It had a huge very comfortable king size bed. The bathroom had a jacuzzi tub, was very large and had two bathrobes. It was our wedding anniversary trip and we had a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine waiting for us. ||There is a complimentary glass of house wine every evening. The wines were nothing special but it was a nice touch. Breakfast is very delicious with cooked to order eggs, buffet fruit and pastry, juice, and plenty of very good coffee. Breakfast is included in your stay.||We had a reservation for dinner, but the chef was sick. It was too bad. The staff suggested we try the Brick and Fire restaurant. The Brick and Fire was an excellent choice for food, wine selection, and desserts. It’s about an5 minute drive.

Our stay at Carter Bed and Breakfast was perfect, from check in to check out. We were greeted with chocolate chip cookies, then a complimentary class of wine in the bar/lobby before we went out to dinner. Our room was large, quiet, airy (tall ceiling with large fan) and the bed was super comfortable. There were lots of potential restaurants within walking distance - and old town is lovely to walk around in - and the bar at the Carter House even serves light food/appetizers. The breakfast (3 choices made to order) plus an amazing pastries, fruit, yogurt, juices, etc bar. The General Manager who we met before checking out, took us on a tour of the home across the street and gave us a great verbal history of Eureka. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend to everyone!

Google
The worst lodging experience of my life. There was a hole in the wall with a grate on it that brought in constant cold smelly air (not connect to AC in any way) it was just this cold smelly draft. Then on top of this the room was sprayed with some sort of horrific scent. The linens had all been washed in heavily scented products. My allergies were over the top. We were cold (it was July) covered in hives from the sheets, eyes itching all night. I’d asked for and paid for their nicest room. The furniture was not comfortable and there was a feeling of everything being worn out. The breakfast was a complete disappointment. We were so exhausted that we did not make it to the next stop on our trip, instead we stopped early and checked into a hotel to sleep. We paid over $500 for our room. Three years later I still regret this stay.

Google
We basically stopped in Eureka to sleep. This hotel was very nice but needs a little bit of love. Our room was huge but didn’t have AC. So we opened windows. The staff was great and the hotel gives you breakfast and a complimentary glass of wine and beer.

Yelp
I had stayed here previously a couple of years ago during Covid. My experience this stay was quite different. I booked a king suite with sitting room and fireplace, it's spacious and has a comfortable couch with a tv in bedroom and sitting room. This Inn is in an old building and the hotels rooms reflect that, high ceilings, odd angles and crown moldings. The bed was comfortable and had pretty upscale bedding. The bathroom was older but adequate and the hot water pressure was fine. Lots of amenities provided, robes are nice, though it would be great to have had slippers. The only caveat I have about the room is that the carpet is odd, looks like indoor outdoor material and is in need of an upgrade. One of the nicest things about staying here is that the staff are so supportive and accommodating, there is never a request they don't try to fill. Breakfast is part of the package and it's in the restaurant. There is a nice bar off the main lobby which also has pleasant seating areas with a fireplace. The restaurant is now operational again, which is very convenient. I had a really nice dinner the night I arrived, and the prices are reasonable for what you receive. The location is nice, almost to the harbor area in an historic section of Eureka. So, if you want a place to stay that's not run of the mill, this is for you.

Yelp
A recent trip to the Carter House bar, the second floor upstairs on a friday night was an interesting mix of old school style with a twist towards new school sway. The crowd was definitely older, from late thirties to the guy sitting beside me with a Korean War Veteran hat (1950-1953) on. This interior is very comfortable and close, the bar a gorgeous traditional room, rich tones and wood accents. The bartender, Ian is a kind professional who knows his crowd and moves smoothly through it. This place was busy the night of my visit, a lot of people coming and going, and it was standing room only for quite a while. I sat at the bar with a buddy of mine, we ordered some food as well, I had the fish and chips and it was very good. The fish golden brown, plenty of fries and a nice red cabbage slaw on the side. Live guitar music playing downstairs, people sitting around enjoying the evening. A solid bar with good food options most nights. 4 Stars for the great bartender and his kind manner. 00934

Yelp
We stayed in a jr suite and the bed was super soft - to the point where it was uncomfortable left us waking up stiff. We did love the many complimentary options offered but thought that the staff needed more support and wait times and quality suffered. The breakfast left us hungry but we liked it was complimentary and had many options. The wifi was medium speed and we couldn't get through an entire Disney + movie without many moments of buffering every 7 - 10 minutes, which was tough. The robes are exceptionally comfortable, and we loved the jacuzzi. The walls are thin though and we did hear our upstairs neighbors walking in and out all evening while we were trying to sleep at midnight.

Yelp
Check in was very easy and the property was pet friendly, so we were able to bring in our miniature schnauzer. There was even a back door we could bring our pooch in and out of without having to march him through the lobby and possibly disturb other guests. Sarah greeted us warmly and told us about nearby dinner options since the restaurant isn't open on Wednesdays and even gave us a great guide as well as a simple information sheet with Wi-Fi password, check in and out times, as well as bar and breakfast hours. (There is a free wine pour at night and complimentary breakfast worthy of a five-star restaurant included in the stay.) The entire property was immaculate and handsomely appointed, including our room with queen-size bed, armoire, dresser, and desk. There was a basket of goodies you could purchase from, which included chocolates, wine, and other yummy eats. The bathroom had plenty of room to spread out our toiletries and provided huge bath sheets and robes that were plush and comfy. They also had great spa-worthy amenities that smelled fabulous but were not overpowering. The bedding and pillows were ultra comfy, although we barely used them since it was warm. Troy, the manager, was super friendly and was happy to talk shop (since we are in the hospitality business ourselves) and give great recommendations for things to do next time we visit. If you're ever in Eureka, this is the place to stay, especially if you want easy accessibility to Old Town and the waterfront.

Yelp
Wonderful professional business, bar and restaurant, great attitudes, amenities and location. The bartender (male) is a character and makes up for some of the others who seem less than impressed with their jobs. Always an interesting crowd in and out ( locals). They are very communicative by email or phone and have specials. Best place to stay in old town!

Yelp
My fiancé and I recently had the pleasure of staying at Carter House Inns in Eureka, California. To say it was perfect is an understatement; it was a celebration of our love and the beginning of our shared future that we will remember fondly forever. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warmth and friendliness that made us feel welcomed and cherished. Every member of the staff we encountered was genuinely kind, going out of their way to ensure our comfort and happiness. I must specifically mention Troy, the manager of the inn. His attention to detail, professionalism, and personal touches were remarkable. He went above and beyond to make our stay exceptional, ensuring that our room was a haven of romance, from the chocolate-covered strawberries, beautifully handcrafted by the chef of their on-site restaurant, to the stunning bouquet of roses, the champagne, and the bed covered in delicate rose petals. It was evident that Troy had put thought into every detail to make our celebration unique and unforgettable. The rooms at Carter House Inns were impeccably cleaned, beautifully furnished, and radiated a warm, cozy charm that immediately made us feel at home. Each evening, we returned to a spotless room that had been meticulously prepared for our comfort, providing us with a serene retreat. Dining at the inn's restaurant 301 was a delight. The food was consistently delicious. We dined there both nights of our stay, opting to have the food brought to the room on the second night. The staff's attentiveness and the chef's culinary artistry contributed to an extraordinary dining experience we won't soon forget. Overall, our stay at Carter House Inns was an absolute dream, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you're seeking a place that goes beyond the ordinary, offering superior service, exquisite food, and an unforgettable experience, look no further than Carter House Inns. A special shout-out to Troy and his fantastic team who made our visit an absolute joy. We can't wait to return to celebrate our future milestones. Thank you for the perfect engagement celebration!

Yelp
The staff here are the most welcoming and helpful folks. We were traveling with our 2 med to large size dogs and was thrilled to get a beautiful room on the first floor. Sometimes pet friendly rooms can be subpar but not this one. It was clean and comfy. The restaurant is also amazing. Wait staff are as friendly and efficient as you could ask for. Food is top notch, we've dined here prior to this trip, so we knew what to expect and it did not disappoint. We even got to dine with our pups in the lobby nook just outside the main dining room by the big fireplace and received the same good service. We will never stay anywhere else when we're back in the area.

Yelp
We stayed here for a weekend and it was an exceptional hotel. Their staff, rooms, restaurant is top notch. It happened to be Kentucky Derby day when we arrived and they served free drinks and horderves to all the guests in the lobby while watching the race on large screens they had in place so everyone could watch. It was a beautiful place to stay and the room was lovely. They allow pets if you advise them that you will be bringing a pet. It was a charming and very pleasant stay and the staff was amazing. I would highly recommend it. I know it will be our first choice the next time we are traveling through Eureka.

Yelp
Carter House is an amazing place. I travel a lot for business, and pleasure; I don't tend to write reviews. But I have to for Carter House. Don't be fooled by the outside, which looks a bit like the other 400 Victorians in town. Carter House is a gem and sets the bar for this town. Very relaxed, refund vibe. The rooms are spacious, clean, and well-appointed with quality towels, robes, and linens. A 'mini bar' of sorts holds local wine, caramels, and other goodies. Complimentary happy hour wine and beer; full spirit selection with some pretty special obscure picks behind the bar. The bar itself is a piece of art. Feels Hemingway at raffles in Singapore yet at the same time much more laid back. No one is rushing, no one is making any mistakes. The beds have been very comfortable. Both rooms I've had (201, and 301) have had fireplaces; 301 has a full size jacuzzi tube in an alcove discretely overlooking the area. It's so comfortable. It's not a 'trying hard to be comfortable' it just is. I can't say enough great things about this place. The staff are all amazing and truly care about your needs. I'm so glad I found this place. I can't wait to return!

Yelp
This is the quintessential place in Eureka, California. Not to be missed, this place has it all. Amazing food, service, wine list, and more. It's where locals go!

Yelp
We stayed at the "Carter Cottage" for our 10-year wedding anniversary and had a wonderful experience. Check in was easy & pleasant. The cottage itself was beautiful. It's not modern but it's fully equipped with everything you could need. It's decorated beautifully and it's really spacious. There's a gorgeous tub and two fireplaces. They asked for the reason for our stay and when we arrived there was a "congratulations " banner over the fireplace and a bottle of champagne. So sweet! I highly recommend staying here if you're coming to Eureka. It's within walking distance of downtown and a quick drive to the zoo, etc. Definitely give them a chance! We will absolutely be back.

Yelp
All around great experience! Rooms are clean, hotel is cozy & staff is friendly. Sarah at reception was super sweet and inviting. Diana, the bartender, was beyond hospitable. They gave my fiancé and I free glasses on wine and Diana set us up by the fireplace and even gave us utensils/water so we can eat our dinner after a long trip. Extra plus - dogs are allowed!! And Diana was absolutely loving our pup! Complimentary breakfast was honestly delicious. Waitress was sweet. Free coffee!!! Definitely recommend, definitely coming back.

Yelp
We spent two nights here while on vacation and we're very happy with the hotel as well as the staff. The room was clean and quiet and the staff helpful. The complimentary breakfast was very good, way better than your standard Continental. We will definitely stay here again if we ever find ourselves in the area again.

Yelp
We are locals but needed a quick staycation for our anniversary. Had a wonderful stay here from start to finish. We stayed in room #303. It is a spacious suite with a two sided fireplace and a comfortable bed with the softest sheets. We are big fans of whirlpool tubs and this was the first that truly was built for two. The little bar downstairs has an impressive collection of spirits from locally made products to the owner's own Old Carter Whiskey. The continental breakfast had an impressive variety all for $20/person. This inn is in the heart of Old Town Eureka. A horse drawn carriage often strolled by and it's It's a close walk to the historic downtown. We'll be back soon.

Yelp
Very nice stay at the Carter House Inn. Was a busy Saturday evening when we arrived but the check in process went smoothly and we really enjoyed our evening.

Yelp
This review is based on a dog friendly stay. Our room was very nice for a dog room. The inn does not give dog owners the "lesser" rooms. The staff is very friendly. The inn is very pretty and the food was very good. I read the poor reviews before making reservations, and glad I took a chance. I did not find the neighborhood to have a lot of homeless. The Inn is on the cleaner side of downtown. However, don't go to Eureka if homeless are an issue! Someone compared the homeless to LA in the reviews. Apparently they have never been to Los Angeles. A complimentary glass of wine, cookies, and lovely breakfast. Great value. Excellent place to stay if you have a dog and want something nice besides the un-renovated or no view room. Do not leave your dog in room if it barks, walls are thin. Nobody did, but I could see that being an issue as it is an old building.

Patty S.

Yelp
We spent one night here, and would definitely revisit if we are ever in the area. This is a fairly expensive place to stay, but we were very happy to have such a nice place where we were allowed to bring our two little dogs. We were on the second floor and had a good view of the fancy victorian house that is now a private club. They offered us a complementary glass of wine and we were able to bring our two dogs to the bar. We were not aware that they offered some food at the bar or we would have eaten there, instead we had visited Applebee's earlier in the evening. They offer a very small menu but the others who ordered said it was very good. Visited with some very friendly patrons and a very friendly bartender. I understand they are working hard to get the dining room back open as it was closed during the pandemic. In the morning we had breakfast in the dining room which was complementary and probably the best complementary breakfast I have ever had. They offered muffins, fruit, coffee, tea, juice and breakfast is whatever they decide to make that day. The day we were there they had grilled potatoes with bacon and an egg on top-- sounds simple but it was really very good. The only downside to this stay were the number of homeless people in the area. A woman ran down the street past me with her pants pulled completely down to her thighs and she was obviously out of it. There were many homeless people down by the water and lots of graffiti. It is sad to see this happen to an area and I could see why a lot of people would not want to stay here. Once inside the hotel you forget about what's going on outside. The other drawback is they tell you to remove everything from your car so you really do have to unload it all and we were fully packed for an eight day trip. We had been through Eureka years ago and wanted to stop there this time because we didn't get get to spend enough time the last time. We found it had changed drastically to its detriment, sad. The only reason I did not give four stars is because the whirlpool tub did not work in the room, and also the bed mattress should be upgraded a bit, not too comfortable. Everyone we spoke to at the hotel was very friendly and helpful and we wish them good luck as it is a very nice place and I hope they can get control of their homeless situation as I'm sure it is driving some people away.

Yelp
A great stay at the Carter House Inn! Douglass the concierge made our stay incredibly enjoyable with his hospitality, humor, and genuine care for our experience. He offered many great recommendations on places to eat and things to do around Humboldt County. Ian at the bar was very knowledgeable and a true artist with his cocktails and even went the extra mile to help us fix the TV in the room. James in the restaurant also gave us some great recommendations around the area.

Yelp
Of all the places to stay in Eureka, I'd say this is probably among the top. Rooms are clean and arranged nicely. Neither the AC or the bathroom fan worked but it was ok. Things are slightly outdated but not horribly so. The staff is friendly and accommodating, and I'm sure it's especially difficult to remain that way considering the location. Breakfast was ok, but you can get more and (arguably) better food at one of the newer remodeled-and cheaper- Holiday Inns I've stayed at during travels. Free wine in the evening was a decent perk they offered, if you're into that. Nonetheless, Price vs. value: a little too high compared to other places and why I dropped a star. Ultimately cut the trip short and checked out early. Not because of the hotel, but the town. A couple things you need to know if you plan on coming to Eureka, and my review of the hotel isn't based on this: The city is kind of a dump. I'm comparing this to the place I was trying to escape: the SF Bay Area. Don't leave anything in your car. Still unsure if I heard a gunshot or a firework one night while trying to sleep. Watch where you're walking, decent amounts of poop on certain streets and plenty of high, sometimes agitated, homeless people to make you want to leave. I will say local law enforcement does a good job of keeping them contained to non-shopping areas and maintaining a presence. There are only a few decent restaurants in the area, and a few more just north in Arcata. As far as Eureka goes: not worth the trip unless you're stopping by or spending all your time in the nearby parks and coast.

Amy W.

Yelp
We had a great stay at Carter House. We were just passing through on our way north, but decided to splurge a little... we had two big dogs with us and a standard hotel room gets a little cramped. Our room was great, a jr suite with large windows, a fireplace, and a lot of space. It was clean, comfortable and spacious. The bathroom tile shows a little wear, but there was great water pressure and plenty of hot water for the tub. (The tub was a jacuzzi but looked as if the jet control had been disabled - we didn't care, it was a luxury to stretch out & soak). Internet worked, a little bit slower than ours at home but adequate for our needs. We were enthusiastically welcomed and staff could not have been more helpful. We are at their in- house 301 restaurant and we're very pleased with dinner. The salad was kind of meh but the entrees were delicious. Service was good, trending to the leisurely side but our waiter was knowledgeable and we weren't going anywhere anyway. There was a note in the hotel info warning us to not leave luggage in the car; we decided to take a walk on the wild side and left things... there was no problem. Fair enough, they have to tell you & I understand. My husband was wakened at one point by voices in the area, but the hotel itself (maybe because of the location of the room) was quiet. One of our dogs is an early riser so I was out in the dark at five- thirty and all was quiet. The breakfast was nice - a selection of small pastries, fruit, yogurt, and a hot vegetable frittata. Overall this was an excellent stop. The one thing missing from the room was a refrigerator.

Yelp
This was a treat!! So beautiful, and cozy. The hospitality was exceptional as was the food. The bar has a happy hour that is amazing and delicious. If you want to treat yourself and significant other. This is a must.

Yelp
This past weekend I stated the Carter House Inn for the third time. Each time it just keeps getting better. The staff is lovely, the rooms are clean and well appointed, and overall it's a wonderful place to stay. They have a happy hour with a great selection of cocktails, wine, and snacks. My guest and I are both vegan, and the hotel offered to prepare a special breakfast for us so that we would be able to eat because that the food they had on the menu was not something we could have. Very rarely does a hotel go out of their way to take such wonderful care of their guests. I didn't find anything dated or not working in my room. The linens were clean and smelled fresh, the bathroom was spotless. I literally had no complaints about anything in the room.

Yelp
Our road trip brought us to Eureka. And if we were going to stay here, I wanted a place that would be unique. The Carter House Inns are just that! And they are dog friendly! We had options of where to stay and I reserved the Library Suite, which is a two room suite with a king bed in one room and a queen in the other. There was a cushy window seat in the large room, and a small couch in the other with a coffee table. The bathroom...large...huge even! Whirlpool tub, double head shower and two sinks. There's also a small room next to the bathroom that had a Keurig machine. Two flat screen tvs, and some antique furniture. I normally book rooms just to sleep in, but this suite, I wanted to stay in. We ordered pizza and just relaxed. Since we were in the original Carter B&B, there were other guests inside as well. Large common area on the 2nd floor, and a kitchen we could use on our floor. Breakfast at the hotel was included. I would have to agree that they could use two other people when the guests are eating. It just makes for a better dining experience. Since Cako is with us, we took turns going down for breakfast. I had to sit in the only clean table in the corner which was fine. Freshly baked fruit pastry, coffee and fruit to start, and then scrambled eggs, ham and potatoes. What a great start of the day! Everyone on the staff was so friendly! There was even a small welcome for Cako! I seriously wished we were staying one more night! But if our travels ever bring us up this way, even if it's out of our way, I'd definitely stay here again! Sure you could spend less at a chain hotel, but why? And Cako Approves!

Yelp
We decided to stay at Carter House Inns because of the unfortunate fire situation going on all around California right now. However, it appears their restaurant isn't open at the moment either because of COVID, so we weren't able to eat at their restaurant (and probably a big reason why there is such a high rating here). My rating is solely for the hotel: The good: - Both receptionists were really friendly - The bed is comfortable (slightly firm with some bounce to it) and the sheets felt really clean - Our room was big! Although so big that there is just empty space in the middle. Would be nice if they could utilize the space somehow - More towels than you'll probably need, along with a black makeup remover towel. I've never seen this at a hotel and thought it was incredibly smart of them to do/less throwing away of towels, I'm sure! - Parking is easy - although I can't imagine anyone having a hard time parking in any part of Eureka - Didn't hear our next door neighbors whatsoever - Complimentary glass of wine every night of your stay. Choice of Chardonnay, Cab, or sparkling - Big windows in the bedroom The so-so: - Reception interior looked a little outdated - Because it's obviously an older hotel, they still use keys/doorknobs for the hotel rooms versus the standard keycard. Since there is a doorknob and lock on top, you need to fiddle around to make sure you have the right key to unlock your door - The wine I mentioned above wasn't amazing (lol sorry. Picky about my wine) - They probably removed their menus that they usually kept in the rooms due to COVID. Instead, they give you that information on a piece of paper. I wish they spent a little time making that paper look somewhat nice - Bed is really short. Anyone taller than 5'6 will probably have their feet hanging off the bed The not so good: - Our bathroom light would sometimes take over a minute to turn on - Footsteps above were quite loud. Also when someone used their faucet/shower upstairs, it sounded so loud that you would think they were showering in your bathroom - The outlet strip for their TV/coffee machine looks noticeably old. When I plugged my charger in, it also didn't charge unless I held it down. No outlets on the nightstand, although I did find one next to the bed

Yelp
Great boutique hotel! Wondeful bar and very chill! Strongly recommend and a free glass of wine included!

Yelp
At $537.00 per night (after tax and whatnot) my wife and I have a certain level of expectations ie this should easily be at the level of the Mansion on Sutter in San Fran. It's not. Your met by a clerk who doesn't answer the door for you. A bar with early early hours of closing. No room service. Our room while nice was really beat up. Water stains littered the ceiling and a tub from 1974 crusty and full of ants awaited us. They where kind and put out a mixed board of meats and cheeses as well as a cheap bottle of champagne. However once you get past that and past the zero security protecting your vehicle from the hoard of homeless people staring you as you walk in. The real disappointment was breakfast. Quote served until 930. We arrived at 9am to zero breakfast. No front of house staff to be found. We have up and went and found breakfast in town. If I could give zero stars I would. Sad cause there is so much potential but it's just poorly ran and run down.

Yelp
Overall, it gets the job done, but it's not a great place to stay. Holiday Inn Express might be a better choice. The room was easy to book and cost about the same as other nightly rates in our area. We stayed in room 106 which is rather loud. When you aren't hearing the neighbors upstairs walking back and forth with the floor creaking non-stop, the exterior door just behind the room in the hallway slams shut as guests come and go. We awoke at 6am Monday morning to the garbage truck servicing the dumpsters right outside our window. A warning would have been nice and/or an assignment to another room might have been better in light of the weekly schedule staff is more than aware of. We received two complimentary drink coupons upon check-in and was informed happy hour ended at 5:30. We settled quickly and headed to the bar. Sadly, the bar was out of several selections which left less than desirable options. In search of a restaurant to eat, there is not much in the area. Homeless can be found on or near every other corner, one particular group eating sardines with lemons was smoking pot all while chilling in an inflatable chair. Sadly, it is what CA has become. When it came to breakfast, the experience was underwhelming. My wife's food was cold. When asked to have a new plate with warmed food, it returned luke warm at best. I would recommend you stay elsewhere.

Yelp
After reading reviews on Yelp about the Carter House Inn, my bf and I were not 100% certain that we wanted to stay here, which was a shame because we ended up staying elsewhere and not enjoying our stay there. The Carter House Inn was absolutely fabulous. We stayed in Arcata the previous night and left straight for Eureka the next morning after breakfast, so it was still a bit early for check in. Rose, the innkeeper, was very accommodating and allowed us to check in earlier than the normal check-in time. The room was adorable. It was light and bright. The bed was clean and cozy. Our bath towels were very high quality, and the amenities were excellent. There was a Keurig coffee maker with a variety of coffee and tea pods. There were creamer, two complimentary water bottles, and sugar packets for our use. Inside the bathroom were neatly folded bath towels, robes, disposable bottles of shampoo and conditioner, makeup remover wipes, and even bath salt. The front desk was very responsive to our needs. We asked for more body wash and a replacement cup and someone showed up at our door within the next five-ten minutes. Besides excellent customer service and a nice, pristine room, the inn offers complimentary wine/soda for their guests between 5:00pm-8:00pm, although I could be off on the time. They also provide breakfast in the morning, which is delivered right to your door. Overall, I was very impressed with the room and the services that they provided. I felt taken care of and appreciated as a guest. If you are in the area and need a place to stay, look no further. You won't go wrong choosing this inn.

Yelp
We spent two lovely nights here and if we ever return to Eureka we will want to stay here. It has a good location and the staff is very friendly and attentive. Our room was clean and comfortable.

Yelp
So many reviews of the restaurant and not many on the rooms themselves. I am giving this review based off of the hotel stay only. I went during COVID season back in March. First of all, we spoke with a lady named Rose on the phone and she said she could price match the price my girlfriend found on hotels.com or one of those hotel sites. That was extremely generous of her, because the price ended up being really REALLY reasonable and fair. A day before our stay here, we stayed at a really trashy place called The Front Porch Inn in Arcata nearby. And that place was charging about $270 a night there. We totally regret not coming here the first day to sleep. The staff, which were two ladies we met were really nice. I can't remember the other lady's name, but she was super nice and would switch shift with Rose. I think it was Andrea or something like that. Anyways, they made us feel homey. The rooms are amazing. VERY clean. The tub is huge and feels great to lay in. I'm 5'9" by the way. The bed was very comfortable. And the room didn't have any weird or cigarette smell to it. The robes provided were super comfortable. The TV didn't have a lot of channels, but who cares. We were streaming movies on our laptops through their really good WiFi. During your stay there, you get a free glass of wine to chillax. My girlfriend got the wine, and she said it tasted like good wine. We don't know sh*t about wines by the way. And I don't drink, so I got to have ginger ale. They don't skimp on the wine they give out either. And I got a whole bottle of ginger ale. Already, we were feeling like royalty here. We even met two really cool guys who work for BMW nearby, and they both agreed that this place was the bees effing knees. My girlfriend and I came in this area to check out the hiking spots. There's a really good hiking trail that is just minutes away from here via drive. It's 10 miles long and alltrails.com will show you the amazing trails around. There are many restaurants nearby to choose from. Some are in Arcata. Be sure to try the restaurants around, because we found good places to eat. The next morning we got ready to leave for check out which is around 11am. They are lenient. Also, we got breakfast brought up to us. I remember telling them I was allergic to peanuts, and they remembered. Holy sh*t guys... The breakfast here was phenomenal. I don't know what they put in that yogurt with the fruit, but that sh*t got me hard down there. And that fruit drink they gave us... God I can just feel parts of my body getting hard and throbbing from just thinking about that juice. Everything tasted really high class. And they brought the food to our doorway at the time we requested in the morning. This place has my vote. I'm sold. And I will definitely come back again in the future. I really don't understand why people give this place less stars. I'm reading the reviews and a lot of those people giving less than 5 stars seem really dumb. One downside to this place can be the noise. I heard someone revving their car around 2am and I heard some crazy guy yelling around midnight. Eureka has some lunatics around here. But I won't deduct stars from this place, just because Eureka houses a lot of California rejects. Can you find a quieter place to stay? Sure, but I guarantee it won't be as classy and clean as this place. Don't leave valuables in your car as well. Apparently break-ins can happen, but luckily I never heard or saw anything during my stay. We're both from the Bay Area, so we won't be back in a while. But when we do, we definitely will be coming back here. Possibly staying at one of the houses Carter House Inn owns that they let guests stay at. This part of California has great hiking spots, and the Carter House Inn is the place to crash to rejuvenate yourself.

Yelp
Nice, but small rooms, we got a suite, still kinda small.  BUT, these guys have maintenance and infrastructure issues.  Where can I start? A "fireplace suite" that the fireplace doesn't work?  Not a pilot light problem, a mechanical one. It is gas.   Yes, I negotiated a healthy discount because of it.  And yes, it was admitted they knew it far in advance of my arrival.  It should have been fixed or we should have been notified. I had to pair my computer with my cell phone because the internet connection works, only sometimes. The message light on their landline phone flashed for our entire stay, we don't have messages. Electronics, like TV, pretty out of date, especially in the living room. Poorly laid out room, at least ours.  Doors don't fully open, you can get by easily, but kind of weird, because furniture is in the way.  A "love seat" is the only living room seating besides a desk chair, next to the non working fireplace and a huge empty basket, to watch a maybe 26 inch TV.  BTW, the huge empty basket makes it so the bedroom door hits the couch and will not fully open. The other door of the French door set to the bedroom hits the desk about half way. Everything felt tight in that suite and we are thin people.  My wife is a small woman but we both commented that the space was over filled and felt crowded. You can watch a bigger TV in the bedroom, while in bed. Doesn't look like they have AC.  There was traffic noise, at least in our place, if it was hot and you had to open the windows?  Yikes!  Some of the windows don't seem to fully close anyway. There are other small issues.  But for the price they charge, there should not be.  Any of them.   I gave them 3 stars because the hotel is actually quite nice, as was the staff but they have some work to do. Fabulous breakfast, at least for us.  The eggs and bacon crowd will be disappointed though. More yogurt and fruit and pastry.  Delicious.  Served by a nice young woman. Hate to say it but Eureka is on life support.  We used to stop in town for lunch on a long car trip we take a couple of times a year and liked it a lot.  As a stopover for a couple of nights?  In the future we'll pass. Some darn good oysters can be had, though.

Yelp
I had a wonderful stay at The Carter House Inn last night! Everyone working there is so nice and friendly. I like the extra touches... they give you a complimentary glass of wine and a free breakfast in the morning. The rooms are very nice too! I had a gorgeous room with a fireplace. I highly recommend this beautiful inn!

Yelp
My friends and I had a wonderful experience today at the Carter House! We came in for the new Sunday Brunch Buffet...IT WAS INCREDIBLE!!! Perfectly cooked salmon, delicious prime rib. Soooo many options!! The desserts are made in house by their amazing pastry chef. Lemon Bars and Apple Tarts to die for! I hope that the buffet becomes a forever thing....I wanna go every week!!

Yelp
A wonderful experience! We had a warm welcome including complimentary wine and beer offerings in the cozy bar just off the spacious lobby entrance. The bartender was a local who provided us with points of interest and plenty of dinner options within walking distance. Our room had the little extras that made our stay comfortable. Complimentary breakfast was also provided including locally baked blueberry scones. We highly recommend the Carter House!

Yelp
Loved this place during our long weekend stay. Manager Troy Ritchie and his staff go to every length to ensure their guests' comfort and pleasure. Great little bar and 301 Restaurant (onsite) serves excellent cuisine and the wait staff is competent and appropriately attentive. This is an historical building so is "very quaint", and though it may not offer all the amenities found with a modern hotel, it is none-the-less an excellent choice for your stay while visiting Eureka.

Yelp
Enjoyed our stay at the Carter House Inn. Staff was friendly and helpful. Our room was in the main building. Perfect for two! Comfortable bed, spacious bathroom. We dined at the Restaurant 301 and did the special 5 course dinner and wine pairing. Food was great and the service was on point. Definitely enjoyed our quick stay.

Yelp
I really wanted to give 4 stars, and honestly, it's 3 1/2 at least, but there were some issues.....first of all...wonderful staff...really professional and on top of things. The afternoon complimentary glass of wine is awesome....great way to meet people in the bar or just hang out in the lobby. The hotel is walking distance to some great restaurants and Historic Downtown. The complimentary breakfast also is really good and filling and an easy way to start your day. Because of covid, you can take the tray up to your room to eat if you're not comfortable in the restaurant. The downsides: the WiFi did not have a booster and so we did not have it in our room upstairs...which was a disappointment. I alerted staff, but there was nothing they could do. Also our room phone was not working so we had to use our cells for any local calls, and even down to the Front Desk..the bathtub faucet was not functioning properly, so we had either scalding or cold water for our showers. One last thing, the walls are super thin and you can hear your adjacent neighbors pretty well. Overall, it was a nice stay, and I do attribute some of the issues to covid labor deficiencies.

Yelp
We were so happy staying at this beautiful, charming, quaint Inn! We were greeted by a wonderful staff. We had lovely glass of bubbly upon check in and then a lovely breakfast brought to our room in the morning! The bed and linens were fantastic and the towels were amazing! When we are in the area again we will be stay there again!!

Yelp
We arrived just after happy hour and the common area was hopping. Front desk helped us to our room right away and explained everything we could take advantage of: complimentary glass of wine (which could be used during dinner at the restaurant, see review of 301), complimentary breakfast, cookies at 8 pm. There was a doggie kit for our Frenchie ($50 fee for a dog), robes, blankets....The full bar was just down the hall and we brought our drinks back to the room. For breakfast, you could have the special or eggs to order. A walk around old town in the morning and we were off!

Yelp
I want to start by saying that Rose the Inn Keeper who checked us in is an ANGEL & God Bless her, I won't forget her anytime soon. She greeted us warmly & kindly & was very informative. She offered us a complimentary glass of wine of our choice & also reminded us again how late we could get it :) Also met the owner Mark, he was so nice & welcoming as welcome, full of energy & giving the history of the place it was our pleasure to have met him :) The room was spacious, bed was very comfortable but most importantly it was super clean that's most important to me. Very glad we stayed here at the start of my birthday week. I will most definitely return :) Liza & Fred from Vacaville CA

Yelp
This place was close today but my tour guide said that this is a very very posh place to stay when the elite come to town and they eat right across the street at Caffè Fahrenheit 301

Yelp
Stayed here on the 9th and 10th for my GF birthday. Got a king suite with a jacuzzi. Super fun. Did the bubbles and the bombs and the salts. Made some martinis for a couple friends. Our neighbor was super rad. The staff here is very accommodating. Priscilla manages this Top Notch establishment very well. They let me set the room up with flowers and candles. Sold me a couple bottles of wine and champagne even though the bar was closed. (Not past 2am of course). We got steak knives for our shamus filets. It was great. The misses had a decadent time. Highly recommend this joint for any romantic occasion. Thanks Carter House. Looking forward to staying again.

Yelp
A delightful discovery in historic Eureka, Ca. It was a dreary day last month, heading up the coast to Oregon. We were coming from Sonoma. The Carter House Inn was our overnight stop. I felt like I was back in time. The architecture is worth the visit alone. Add to that thoughtful hospitality and you have a real winner. Three things stood out. A wine selection the likes of no other and a wine hour for complimentary consumption. A little black towel in the bathroom specifically for eye makeup removing (brilliant!). And a perky plate of fruit, nuts, and muffins delivered on time to our door in the morning. I highly recommend booking a stay at The Carter House Inn when traveling up and down the Pacific Coast.
