I bought the cutest bag, they have really interesting stuff, from canvas rolls to calligraphy nibs. I am really into the gothic type and it is so hard to find nibs, I was really fortunate to find the A1 and A0. Those are the best and I was able to get some really nice Princeton brushes with a on the go case and the brushes have a metal cover for only 20 dollars, because they were on sale. That was such a great buy! Every one is so nice! They also have art shows!!! Such a gem 💎 I went to star bucks after my spending splurge..

Google
Really love the selection of materials they have here. Currently on vacation and have relied on CSAM a few times since staying here.

It's not only Artists Materials, but there are also painting exhibitions. Today was EARTH DAY ART OPENING. There were snacks, drinks, many guests and of course paintings. Come admire the paintings and of course buy something for your creativity.

Exceptional experience! Called in to make sure an airbrush repair person was in, there was 2. I met Lee who saved my favorite airbrush. He repaired my needle so I wouldn't have to buy one and they had all the other missing pieces to my Iwata. All in 15 minutes it was repaired and ready, I was so happy. Thank you guys!

I made some prints for my first art show exhibition. I went to Carter Sexton and got some nice backing for the frames. Their Guillotine is amazing because its so large. I was able to cut down my 11x17 prints easily. It was really fun to operate such a large guillotine. I highly recommend you try it out for your large format prints. Also the employees that work there are very helpful and cheerful. I feel very welcome when i am perusing the store looking for my next fancy pen.

Have seen this place for years but never gone in. Finally did and was surprised to see how big and well stocked it is. Staff were super helpful without being pushy. Will definitely be back!

Google
Highly recommend you coming here if you need any paper or pens or any inks of any sorts. The employees are extremely helpful and a joy to deal with. Run, don't walk to this place for all your stationary needs.

Google
So a nice artist materials shop in Valley. I am an architectural major student. I went to the store to prepare required materials. A staff, Nicky, helped me to complete the list. The store provided student discount. Thank you so much. ☺️

Yelp
"Paint it! Paint it black!!!" My go to local small art supply, art gallery, art happenings and creative vibes stores. Carter Sexton Artist Materials is located in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley within the Valley Village/Studio City area and resides on Laurel Canyon Boulevard/just a beat down from Chandler Blvd and the Laurel Canyon Metro Station for the Orange (aka G) line. It's got lots of fun nooks and crannies with great materials, supplies, service and sales (including 40% off, clearance items and more). It was easy for me to follow a lot of their played out pricing for canvas (10 years in retail, though it's been almost 10 years since I walked away from it and yet still retain so much lol). I ventured into the "Come (On) In" area and discovered some complimentary artist guides, incredible artwork and extra items I was seeking for a sketching event I hosted over the weekend. Love coming in on Saturdays, though it's been several months since I was last in, hoping to change that, check out more of their events, including some great some shows this holiday season like their Medley. I don't have much to submit by their deadline, but highly recommend you do if you're an artist, aspiring artist or creative. They definitely are neighborhood feel with some cool regulars. Caught some warming interactions and references to Cheers (the 80s to early 90s series) between the staff and a really nice returning customer. I'm not sure if Kelli was there when I stopped in, but I've had some greatest response with her in the past online when inquire about things. Everyone is super knowledgeable, mindful and respectful. Ready to assist, but also let you take your time exploring and feeling out all they have to offer. Street parking primarily with a 1hour limit from 8am to 6pm. Some limited spaces in their back alley parking, that I'm sure is super great for their staff/ the Carter Sexton family. Its first come first serve, but you might get lucky. Open from 10am to 6pm Monday through Saturday weekly with some variations for holidays. A must whether a local, passing through or seeking out a small biz to support that does great things for the area, and showcasing a spotlights artists of all walks of lives and ages. Even Bob Ross on display wants you to check out this great supportive Art spot. "We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents."

Yelp
Not a huge selection of watercolor. The brushes were quite picked over. Didn't stop me from splurging on a few delights!! Wonderful selection of colored pencils. Nice woman at the register. A good art store experience. Prices were good

Yelp
Carter Sexton is one of the few mortar and pestle stores still in business and they are all very knowledgeable about their art supplies! They also give excellent service with a smile!!

Yelp
Walking in my partner whispered to me "oh man, this is a REAL art supplies store" and he was 100% right. This is the real deal. The staff was super knowledgeable and helpful. The store is cute. The prices are wild compared to Michael's or ::gag:: Hobby Lobby. This is my new go-to spot. SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESSES!

Yelp
Since I was a kid I've always wanted to visit this store. I visited yesterday with my two kiddos that love to draw and it was such a fun experience. My kids bought themselves a few items that they were so excited about. They have a wide variety of artist materials.

Yelp
Family owned and operated for 80 years, this is a wonderful of art supplies! They have what you need and know where everything is. They have art and cool decorative accessories for sale. Ask about their discount to professional artists. A great place to get your art supplies--and support a friendly, local gem of a business.
google avatar

Yelp
A really lovely experience. Very cool store. I'm an art novice and got kind and supportive help from a knowledgeable salesperson. Skip the chain stores! This place is great.

Yelp
Hidden Gem, honestly the only comparable place would be those colleges that had a student store that was stocked with everything you could possibly need for art supplies and not overpriced. You can straight up buy scrap canvas and bagels to hold your large print art work, 1-3 point perspective grid paper, puddey and charcoal in every color, paint pens and cans and just everything they have everything, those little stick figure guys you can pose for like less than 10$ bucks. It's awesome not over priced and the staff is super kind and knowledgeable too it's just it's such a good place. I'll never walk into a Michael's again, sorry but just no lol this is better and apparently they've been there for like 80+ years just go, you found your art store or make the drive out, it's worth it.

Yelp
Came in to the store today. This was my first time visiting. Absolutely amazing. An artist's dream store. I will be coming back here as often as I can. My new favorite store for supplies and the shop employees were so nice and helpful. I highly recommend this place for your art supplies/ materials.

Yelp
I spent at least 2 hours wandering aisle to aisle. I came here for large bristol paper and didn't realize every thing else they had to offer! They were super nice (hi andy!) and helpful. A large variety and range to choose from in terms of projects. There hasn't been a shop in LA that i have seen a large selection of pen nibbs such as this shop. Need to come back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
A sweet, old-school art supply shop staffed with ARTISTS who know their stuff. I buy my inexpensive journals here, a specific kind with quality paper that accommodates any style pen. (The friendly, helpful staff happily special-order them for me.) Dump the corporate big-box stores, buy local; buy mom-and-pop.

Yelp
MEANDERINGS: I was up in The Valley picking up some things in Van Nuys when I thought about some arts supplies I was needing. So, off to Yelp I went and I ended up at Carter Sexton Artist Materials (9/30/20). BE SURE: I had called first to confirm that "in-store" shopping was indeed in effect -- I recommend that you do this no matter what any website for any business says and their business fit nicely into my planned multistop route via Google Maps. WOWED: Anyway, when I arrived I quickly found a parking spot behind the business and I was fortunate enough to be served by Kylie, the same woman who fielded my call. She is a lovely person who, when it comes to customer service, truly sets the standard other strive to emulate. We spoke for a good bit and I think we both came away educated by one another. She taught me about Dura-Lar and acetate (I need this for a Halloween Costume I am constructing for 2020 (probably for 2021, the way the Coronavirus is acting up lately) and we conversed on a multitude of topics. NEXT TIME: I will be coming back here bases on her vast knowledge on everything I asked about... she even knew about my Mitsubishi drawing pencils that I purchased in Japan (of which I need several replaced). I left with a bonus item... I remembered that I needed a good T square... my cheap plastic one of 30 years or so has finally broken... Kylie set me up with a good stainless steel version. Probably going to be set now for the next 60 years, lol. END GAME: This is one of those businesses that I hope to return to sooner than later. I didnt get the name of the woman who rung me up but she was very pleasant, polite and professional and I could easily imagine a delightful smile behind her mask.

Yelp
Service was great and the materials were easy to find. They have good discounts too for students. Highly recommend checking out.

Yelp
Competitive pricing and locally owned! What more could you ask for? I've been shopping at Carter Sexton for my art materials for several years now they have a great selection and extremely friendly staff. Everything is affordably priced and you wouldn't be able to get it cheaper at Blick or bigger art store. They have a diverse selection of materials and will order anything for you that they don't have in stock and give you a call when it comes in. If you're in the area I would highly recommend that you shop here. It is perfect whether you're a beginner or a pro.

Yelp
I'm really not much of an artist and my main crafting form is sewing or knitting. However, due to the pandemic I've had free time and wanted to try getting into painting - something I really haven't done since I was a child. I found this store on Google and it was the most pleasant outside experience I've had since the lockdown. The store itself seems large to me for an art supplies store and all of the workers were friendly and helpful. They have a lot of different types of supplies from water colors, acrylic paints, heavy duty paints, markers, calligraphy supplies, chalk, clay, canvases, pastels, graphite, and more. The store is laid out in a logical pattern that allowed even first time visitors like myself to understand where things were. They had many different types of every type of item I previously listed as well; offering a diverse range of choices. I came after viewing their website that detailed many items but upon arrival when I asked I was explained that while they have many items in stock, some items they do not have so if you want something they do not have in stock you would order from their website with free shipping to their store at which point you would go pick it up. Lastly, they offered hand sanitizer and gloves to incoming shoppers. There is also a student discount of 10% which I was unaware of but the employee who rang me up at check out told me about it and generously applied it to my purchase. I would absolutely recommend coming here and checking out art supplies.

Yelp
First time visiting the store and got some great deals! Very nice and friendly staff. They also had a great clearance area where I managed to find some Schmincke soft pastels for $1 a stick, just WOW! Nice Velour papers and plenty of pastel pencils to choose from. I was also very happy that nice girl waiting on me packaged up all my loose pencils and pastels very nicely in small boxes. My new go to art store... Susan Kashimiri suekashart@instagram

Yelp
I have been coming to place for years, they are so helpful when it comes to any of my needs for my Airbrushing equipment. Definitely recommend this place to others.
google avatar

Yelp
in a sea of big box stores, Carter sexton is the last of the valleys true art stores which the employees themselves and the owners are artists. its the last place in the valley where you can find an actual expert in airbrushing. and where they have a paper department and where you can get brands you cant find in many big box places such as Rublev and even Mghram. Defintley worth a visit and more.

Yelp
My Artist friends and I absolutely LOVE coming here for our supplies. Great selection and if they don't carry what you're looking for, they will order it for you and call you when it arrives. Such friendly service!

Susan H.

Yelp
Carter Sexton to the rescue again! Found the best prices for what I wanted and needed. Could not be happier!

Ravi M.

Yelp
Love this local community friendly artist hub. Filled with artist essentials of all types for beginners and professionals and all between. It's a small store, so don't expect everything to be in stock or competitive with an online store; however, if you value seeing the product in hand, and building relations with the artist community, then this is your place.
google avatar

Ellie S.

Yelp
Really good selection of art supplies and very competitively priced. The staff is really helpful and people who frequent it are friendly. It's not near where I live but I go there a few takes per year.

Yelp
Christmas Shopping as an African American is exhausting. Witnessed my fiancé being followed by a gentleman and then followed my entire party to another area without even speaking. Just staring. This made us extremely uncomfortable and we left. Happy Holidays i suppose.

George C.

Yelp
Great communication, warmth and charm. From beginning artists to top professionals they are truly helpful and sincere in their knowledge and sense of what is needed and wanted. I've been buying from them for 20 years but never wrote a review, maybe I was too busy. I have always found the items I needed there whereas other "art stores" would just stare at me blankly and not care.
google avatar

Yelp
Super nice and knowledgeable staff!! Awesome selection of art supplies at a fair price.

Yelp
It's an artist haven!! Since I lived in North Hollywood for 15+ years I always pass by it or see it across Shakey's, never crossed my mind to visit it. OMG! Can't believe my eyes it's a candy store for artist, sculptors, painters, spray painters, etc. whatever is your medium they got it. Great friendly staff and knowledgeable with all the products, can recommend based on what you need. By the way, their prices is great! Got my Uni Posca Markers I'm quite happy they have the variety of sizes and colors. Stop by and say "Hi!"

Kenneth F.

Yelp
PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS! Don't use corporate stores like Blick. I absolutely love this store. I spend most of my time in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys where the only options are Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and JoAnnes which don't really cater to the fine art supplies I need. And I don't like supporting corporate stores or online shopping. An artist recommended this store to me... which has saved me a lot of time! There are many fine art supply stores south of the Hollywood Hills, but I'd rather go somewhere close that's got a more ma and pop vibe to it. I primarily work in colored pencils, graphite, and charcoal, while recently starting in many types of paint. This store has so much. When I was brand new I found what I needed there. Now that I'm moving into intermediate, I'm taking advantage of the plentiful amount of tools they offer. For me, this is my favorite place when I need a specific kind of paper or paint because I know they have it. Some of the color pencil sets I need (a full set of 76-120 depending, usually $200-500) are hard to find in stores. But they will order anything you need within a couple days! Very glad my friend recommended you guys to me.

Yelp
I've been going to Carter Sexton for years. They know me by name, they've helped me in a pinch, and I've had the pleasure of working with them for community arts events. It's extremely important to support this last art store in the Valley - not just to keep professional resources in the community - but to attract all the kids and new artists that a brick-and-mortar can bring in.
google avatar

Mishelle M.

Yelp
I love the people that work there. You can really tell that they were hand picked. So human and thoughtful.
google avatar

Ivan P.

Yelp
The staff is always super helpful, friendly, knowledgeable, and their stock is exactly what any artist would wish to see in an art supply store. Definitely my favorite local art supply spot.
google avatar

George M.

Yelp
RACIST. Went in to exchange a canvas I bought from there for some brushes- even bought more than the total amount of the canvas so I gave them more money, but I won't be coming back again because the entire time I was there I was treated like a criminal. One of the employees came over and stood behind me as I looked for brushes, pretending to be on the phone, watching me like a hawk. Back off of your customers.
google avatar

Navissima K.

Yelp
Top notch, uber-passionate staff that truly, deeply, honestly care about artists of all sizes and scopes. Even the non-artsy folks like myself. Was privileged to have a piece of art commemorating my late GSD. And, boy was the team on it with recommendations on paper, prints, frames, sizing, and so much more. These people live and breathe their work. Trust them for classic modern and cutting edge design products for adults and kids alike. Ask for Niki as she's a gem of a consultant!
google avatar

Jeffrey H.

Yelp
Lovely folks there. Family biz since 40's. Great old school art supplies. Now that Kit Kraft is gone, this place is even MoRE special. Great selection.

Yelp
Another small business owner (art supply store), who unfortunately went out of business recommended me to this amazing place ! I needed a gift for an artist, wow! I received the best customer service and the staff was absolutely helpful and very knowledgeable. I can't believe that living in the neighborhood, I had never visited this gem in the valley. I Love that feeling when you write up about such a great place and experience . Stop by and get all yours art supplies here and support small business.
google avatar

Ann M.

Yelp
Probably the most friendly art store you're ever going to find. They've got a pretty good selection - I can usually find what I'm looking for and it's nice to go to a local store. Nice atmosphere, great staff, super sweet and helpful.
google avatar

Gina C.

Yelp
A great neighborhood art store. The workers are extremely attentive and knowledgeable of the products. Out of a marker you usually use? They'll help you find the next best thing. They have a great assortment for how small the store is compared to larger art shops. I love supporting this place and will continue doing so. Five stars!!

Rob 1.

Yelp
Lovely staff. My wife wanted to pop in here and some inks caught her eye. She never used them before. The staff gave recommendations and even a little demonstration. My wife got to try things out a little before buying. This made her day. Its a pretty cool store.
google avatar

Thomas S.

Yelp
I've been coming here for YEARS. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. I have recently began taking my daughter (5yrs) to CS and she loves it. She looks around at the various art tools/materials and can't wait to get her hands on'em. CS is one of the oldest art stores around. Support them! *they offer student discounts *plenty of parking. (Front and back of store) *they offer art classes and gallery shows
google avatar

Alex T.

Yelp
Not my first time coming here and definitely won't be the last. They have high quality materials for so many different artists. They also have awesome sales on paint brushes. I recently went about a week ago and they had a table set up with gloves and hand sanitizer, and even though I had brought my own, I really appreciated that: it shows they care for their customers! A worker was able to answer my question about where watercolor paper was located and not only did he help me out with that, he very kindly helped me choose the best paper for my needs ( because I didn't even know there were different types!) and he wasn't rude or condescending. I really really love this store and hope more people visit them. Nice people and they play classic rock. p.s. they have discounts for students!
google avatar

Bianca E.

Yelp
This store is so awesome and inspiring! I went to look for some drawing supplies and I found a new hobby there thanks to the associates help!!! Literally every person working there had amazing customer service and were extremely knowledgeable! I'm definitely coming back!!!!

Yelp
I was in need of MONTANA GOLD spray paint for an upcoming project I have. After many searches trying to find this spray paint at a local store that is open & offers curbside pick-up, I finally found this hidden gem! The woman that helped with my order is lovely & made the entire process quick & easy! That being said, I absolutely recommend this art supply store to anyone!
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
I believe in supporting small businesses, even though the prices might be higher than the big discount stores. It's worth it to me. I love this art supply store for the variety of materials and the helpful employees. Recently I needed some large canvases, and they were able to deliver to my place.

Elena A.

Yelp
Great art supplies and employees are so helpful with information and useful tips for the right tools or art supplies to use. Love coming here!
google avatar

Adriana B.

Yelp
My new favorite Art store. :) Friendly staff and lots of art supplies! Continental art supply in Reseda used to be my go to place but they shut down awhile back. Glad there are still Art stores out there. I thought Michaels and hobby lobby were the only choices left.
google avatar

Vanessa M.

Yelp
This place is excellent! Didn't even know about it until I was referred here by a salesman at Continental Art Supplies, where they had only half of my supplies. Came here instead of making the trek to Pasadena for Blick's and it was super convenient since it's in the valley. It looks tiny from the outside but like other reviewers say, it's pretty big and is split up into different sections loaded with stuff. Aisles are thin, that would be my only complaint, but that's because they have so much stock. Found all my materials with a super helpful worker who was able to tell me specifics for products I needed, helped me find the right alternatives and the teller was equally as charming and knowledgeable. The front of the store is like a mini bookstore and they also have cheap instructional dvds, easels, portfolios, all kinds of paper, etc. Also, they have a 10% student discount, and I hear they also have a professional discount. All in all it's a great, chill art store hidden in the valley with great customer service. Def will be coming in again soon!
google avatar

Clara B.

Yelp
Oldest art store in Los Angeles, since 1944! Lovely and friendly staff, they carry unique selection of papers and reasonable prices. It is close to my home and recommend it to my students. Please support your local art store.
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
My dad was an architect so we would frequent a technical art store in my home town when I was growing up. I remember the smell of it and all the cool odds and ends and specific tools. Sometimes he'd get me a new pen or colored pencils or something like that. I think that's why I love this store so much. I was just looking for some micron pens to do Inktober and found them because they had some in stock and were open on a Saturday. It really brought back memories walking inside. The staff was kind, helpful and knowledgeable. I found what I needed easily and also had a good time browsing the rest of the shelves. There's something so cool about seeing all the specific tools of people's particular trades laid out and displayed. I'll be back for sure!
google avatar

Linda P.

Yelp
The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about their supplies. I do not know much about art supplies but needed to buy some for a gift. The staff member walked me through several products. The products sold were quality products sold at a reasonable price.
