Best hostel and best operated hostel that I have experienced in my travels on five continents. Also the cleanest, most thoughtful, most well organized, best kitchen (cleanest/most well organized/loveliest layout and most enjoyable to cook and to cohabitate in); and the most tastefully, artfully, and beautifully decorated hostel (by a long shot) that I’ve experienced overall. Casa Azul is also in perhaps in the best location in Puerto Varas. What’s more, there’s a great communal vibe amongst the travelers and guests coming through. The public spaces can be quite social and yet there are enough of these spaces both inside and out (including little nooks in the shared and gigantic ‘living room’) to find plenty of privacy and quieter zones, even when the hostel is completely full. And then the rooms themselves are exquisite, with a high degree of thoughtfulness having gone into their outfitting and design, including super warm blankets and comfortable beds. Also spotless shared bathrooms that are kept extremely well cleaned on a daily basis.

Hostel is located on a smaller, largely quiet street in the more local part of town (less overrun with out of town tourists most interested in shopping), yet only several blocks and perhaps a five or so minute walk away from the center of town and all of its cafes, restaurants, bars, shopping, plazas and events. It's incredible, really. One great little less frequented cafe is just 60 meters out the front door...

Casa Azul is a family run house and gardens that's been in business for 25+ years (haha, I’m aware now that I sound like an advertisement—I just became so fond of this place is all!) Andres and son Luka do a tremendous job running the place, and it's lovely to notice the level of care that the two and the rest of their staff put into the Hostal (Shoutout to Federico and Krétse!!! (sorry I'm sure I spelled that wrong!)). It’s an informed care that clearly comes from years of experience with the place and knowing what works well. There's a warmth that radiates from the hostel's design theme of beautiful warm, light colored wood throughout--tongue and groove wooden walls, ceilings and floors, wooden doors and gorgeous block wood staircase; to the custom glass display cases that hang in different shared spaces throughout, and are filled with various pieces of memorabilia and pop [and other] culture remnants, from multiple decades and countries with numerous genres of life and art represented (including Andre's former career as a professional photographer in the German movie industry); to the tastefully custom framed printouts of lyrics to profound/inspirational songs or passages from powerful pieces of literature that hang in some guest rooms; the small shelves above the head of the single beds (as well as matching wooden nightstand beside the bed) at just the right height to be able to reach up and grab things in the dark while you're sleeping--and the light and easy to reach light switch underneath. Also a mirror in most of the rooms that I saw and small custom locking wooden boxes to store personal items in.

There’s a Japanese garden down one side of the hostel with a lovely covered deck and seating to take in the sounds of the coy pond at its center and watch the fish swim along beneath strands of colorful prayer flags that hang from above, presiding over the jade and other plants and small Buddhist statues… The highly curated assortment of music that plays on old school high fi speakers throughout impressed me on a regular basis.

I stayed here for a long time--much longer than I'd originally intended to, and I felt so very welcome, almost like a part of the family. You will be impressed by this place (I am not the only one I heard say, 'this is the best hostal I've ever stayed at') and it is almost always full, so book in advance if you think you may like to be here longer! Thanks Casa Azul Hostal crew for truly making me feel at home and for being my home in Chile for nearly a month! See you again! :) :) :)
