12 Best Places for Shopping in Madrid | Condé Nast Traveler

"Casa de Diego has been outfitting Madrid's gentry with umbrellas, canes, combs, shawls, and fans since 1800, when Manuel de Diego opened the corner shop just off the Puerta del Sol. Today, De Diego's descendants continue to preside over the business, where the hand-painted fans, bearing floral motifs, polka dots, nature scenes, and more, steal the show. Can't imagine fanning yourself in a bar or on the subway platform? Pick up a fringed, feather-soft shawl that displays the painstaking artistry of traditional Spanish needlework—Casa de Diego uses only the finest silk and still embroiders everything by hand." - Benjamin Kemper

Excellent dinner at Casa Diego Madrid. We were recommended the authentic Spanish food. Their fish plate Rodaballo (Turbot) was exquisite. The food was delicious and the service provided by Hernando was top notch. We will definitely be back soon.

This place is amazing! I bought a medium sized fan and a case, I love them both. My mom has a few fans which she bought here over 8 years ago and they are still good as new. The service was amazing. Cherry was especially patient and helped us pick out many fans. This place is definitely one you should visit.

I highly recommend people who love Spanish fans to visit the shop and see if you want to find a special fan to collect! I bought a beautiful special fan from the shop made with mother of pearl. The staff were very friendly and they gave me a lot of information on the fan I purchased. Thank you Casa de Diego and all the best to you guys!

Do you want to taste some of Madrid's ánd Europe's culture and history when you are in Madrid? Than you should absolutely visit Casa de Diego at the Puerta del Sol, Madrid's oldest fan (in Spanish: abánico) shop! The family company has been selling "abánico's" since the beginning of the nineteenth century, when a fan was used by the rich in Europa. Nowadays, everyone can use a fan in Spain. The Diego family can show you some precious fans from the beginning... And keeps on selling fans and umbrella's from the best quality...

Beautiful place where I got my bridal mantilla! Francisco and Natania were AMAZING and very helpful. I felt bad for coming so close to closing time, but it was worth the flight across the ocean as I left with a mantilla, castañas, and peinete. My mom also bought a mantilla for my wedding as well as they had various options. MUST VISIT if you're getting something unique for your special event.

If you are looking for something more authentic than check out this place for your Spanish fan. But remember, that authentic isn't cheap. These are high quality fans. They carry a little bit of everything.... to include some amazing antiques... true pieces of art and history

Located on the Puerta del Sol, stepping into Casa de Diego takes you back into time where strolling with a cane, umbrella, parasol or fan was commonplace. The selection is almost overwhelming, but the staff is friendly and there are a wide variety of price points. It was nice to see that they didn’t push the highest priced items first and highlighted the handcrafted/painted differences between each.

Walk into the store and step into old-world customer service. All of the employees give exemplary customer service. That, in addition to hand fans, canes and umbrellas—all handmade!! Great quality and decent prices. Complimentary gift wrapping too!!

Yelp
Casa de Diego is a very small shop on the Puerta Del Sol. I had heard it was overpriced, but checked it out anyways. I really wanted to find an authentic gift for my sister from Spain. I thought a hand painted fan would be something she'd like. And this was the place to go. I was pleasantly surprised by the price range. I bought two fans on the mid-high end, but I really like them. I skipped the specially designed stands because at 100€ a piece, I can't afford the stand to cost more than the fan. The service in the store was good. They were pleasant, but a little abrupt. It could have been the language barrier. So I won't really fault them. Other items including Paraguas (umbrellas) can be found here. Definitely worth at least a look in the Windows if only to admire the handiwork.

Yelp
Great cultural experience. This shop is in the heart of Puerta De Sol and offers a look into the more traditional past of Spain. Hand painted fans adorn the walls and windows, and they are quite beautiful to look at. The range of prices was $24-$300. We bought one to take home as a gift for a relative.
