WOW!! WOW WOW WOW!! This place is AMAZING. The tacos are to die for. We were shopping and ran into a local lady and we asked her where we should eat and this is where she told us. Michelle and Ed weren't wrong!! So glad we ran into her. Freds didn't disappoint. The waitress was wonderful. She had great suggestions. The atmosphere was beautiful. Wishing we had Freds in our state because we would visit all the time. We had the mango margarita and it was yummy. Can't wait to return to San Diego so we can visit again!!

Google
You may be waiting a while to be seated, but damn worth the wait, Queso is fantastic, tacos were incredible and the service is out of this world. If you want to stop anywhere near a hotel, stop here and get a taco!

Google
Very good tacos and pet friendly. So friendly to the point that they have a pet menu. Love it!! The hostess was really nice. They DJ had great music! It's an awesome to have a chill time with family and friends.

Google
Loved it! Every staff member was super cool and helpful. The food plates are LARGE. The calamari was great. The cornmeal in the batter was interesting but still tasty. The chicken fajitas were delicious. Nd the aguachile has huge slices of shrimp. That dish wasn’t my favorite. Maybe if everything was mixed together it would be more flavorful but it was still good . The sauces were all great and prices you’re decent.

I took a seat at the bar on a Thursday late-afternoon. It was pretty slow/quiet at that time, but things started picking up. People were nice. Bartender was friendly and attentive. Tacos were delicious. Beer was cold. Chips and salsa were good too!

Google
Food was on point, burrito could easily feed two people with a taco or 2 for good measure. The tacos were great too. I had the carne asada for both, my friend had the fish taco and we’d happily recommend either. The margaritas were great, and not over powering. I’m a spice fan, and the spicy margarita weren’t overly spicy, but gave a good kick. Careful with the chips and dips too….they’re addictive 🤣 Overall I’d highly recommend this place

Google
Absolutely wonderful spot for lunch in the middle of Old Town. Very reasonably priced, generous portions, and both food and drink were delicious. Try the chingadera!! The decor is lovely and welcoming, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We asked to sit on the dog- friendly patio and got to enjoy looking at cuties while having a lovely lunch. We will definitely be back!!

Ashley

Google
Very dog friendly with a cute menu for dogs! I had the fajitas and my pups had the Teddy's Bowl with beef instead of chicken because they were able to accommodate my boy's chicken allergy. 🥰 Lesley F was a fantastic server and the whole experience was lovely!

Yelp
Ray, one of the Managing Partners at Fred's, accommodated twenty six of us following a class field trip on the Old Town Trolley Tour. After our tour of the city, we stopped at Fred's to eat an amazing lunch. Ray created a menu to custom our students, offering various tacos and enchilada plates, beans, rice and drinks! Tito, the assistant General Manager stepped in as our server so he could speak to the students in Spanish. He did a fantastic job at taking orders from our beginning Spanish students who were required to order their meal in Spanish. We will definitely plan another trip to Fred's because the food was excellent, the service was excellent and the management team was definitely there to help and serve students in the community of San Diego. Amazing location in beautiful Old Town, a beautiful ambiance of outdoor seating with Mexican decor and fantastic service of the fine people at Fred's!

Yelp
During our visit for happy hour they offered a huge selection of drinks and food for $7 each! At this incredible price we got 3 adobada tacos and the chicken quesadilla. We chose to sit at the bar to get the happy hour deals and was offered a free chips and salsa appetizers as we were seated. Its very culturally decorated at the restaurant with heat lamps outdoors which was nice during our evening visit. - Chips and Salsa (free!): Crispy and warm corn tortillas served with a generous portion of salsa. Salsa and chips weren't too salty or sour and was a perfect dipping consistency. Asked for seconds on the salsa because it was so good. (9/10) - Tres Adobada Tacos ($7.00): Regularly sized tacos with a sweet and charred pork tacos, pineapple bits, onions and verde crema drizzled on top. Very flavorful and tasted a lot like Chinese char siu. (9/10) - Chicken Quesadilla ($12.00): Two medium sized quesadillas with a crispy fried cheese crust and a gooey monterey jack cheese inside with chicken thigh bits. Paired with a shredded salad side and a refreshing verde crema dipping sauce. Without chicken is only $7.00 but adding meat (chicken/adobada) is $5 more. (9/10)

Yelp
not bad, surprisingly got in during dia de los Muertos. Line was 1hr wait but everywhere was so busy there was no escaping it. Our server was super friendly and attentive. The food not bad, would definitely like to come back and try other things on the menu.

Yelp
This place is definitely one of my go to spots when I'm in old town. They have an insanely delicious mai tai, one of my favorite I've ever had. The service is great. They always welcome you with a smile. You can even reserve yourself a table online before showing up to save yourself some time in case it's a busy day. Molcajete bow is NEXT LEVEL. I wish I had a picture to share, but that is definitely the best shareable item you can order. If you eat outside in the evening, they have a nice little ambience with fire next to your table, and you hear the hustle bustle of everyone enjoying the neighborhood! This is in old town, so parking is not the best, but walking around a little bit before you have your meal is also a plus in my book.

Yelp
We had the best bartender here!!! Came in for happy hour on a Sunday afternoon for some $7 specials. Got the chicken chimichanga, adobada fries, and carnitas tacos. Also got some margaritas and beer for only $7!!! Such a fun experience with a lively atmosphere. The food was decent but definitely order some of their habenero hot sauce to give it more punch.

Yelp
Stopped by here to grab some mid-afternoon drinks and they did not disappoint. Because we came at an off time, it was not crowded and we were able to get quickly seated at the bar. Bartender was great and there were some fun drinks to be had there. We saw a steady stream of people who look like local stop by to grab drinks here. Would definitely stop by here if I was in the area.

Yelp
Absolutamente maravellosa! Great service, great food, great atmosphere. They know how to take care of customers.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. The service was very friendly. Their ingredients seemed pretty fresh. I'm a harsh critic of queso however, and this queso was lacking. It was bland. The burrito was tasty and HUGE. Im not sure the size increase is worth the price increase. The chips and salsa were a bit bland as well. Overall it was a great vibe and the fresh avocado was a great surprise. But for the price i left disappointed.

Yelp
The environment was fun, service was really nice and attentive, and I enjoyed the food/drinks. The portions were generous! The tortillas were delicious. Loved my margarita too. Their patio is dog friendly! We didn't try any of the dog menu but maybe next time. Would definitely return!

Yelp
Okay first we were seated by a sweet hostess, and we had the best waitress Tati. The ambiance was so nice both inside and out. You might get the feeling as if you're in a real Mexican Upscale Restaurant in Mexico. The food is delicious as is the Fred's Casa I.P.A. Cold and hits the right spot. A must have while you're in Old Town San Diego.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is great! I love the possole. Service is great. Love their tacos too! If it's not too cold, I prefer seating outside.
google avatar

Yelp
Every time we come to Old Town we always stop here & it never disappoints! Always great food & service. The margaritas are GREAT. Highly recommend their Enchiladas.
google avatar

Katherine K.

Yelp
I was told Old Town had great Mexican food, but I don't think they were talking about this place. Out of all the salsas I tried here, I only really liked the green salsa. The chips were pretty stale and cold. My friend and I split the Rolled Tacos (half chicken and half potato) and the Chicken Mole. The mole was not good at all and the chicken was very chewy for a lot of it. The rice it came with was very salty and otherwise bland. However, I thought the rolled tacos weren't half bad. I definitely enjoyed the chicken one more than the potato because the potato one didn't get as crispy. Next time (if there ever is a next time), I wouldn't get the pico on top because the tacos just soaked in the juice, which ruined the flavor.

Yelp
The location is great, in the middle of Old Town. The atmosphere is fun with great energy. The chips and salsa were good. The nachos were big, decent. The carne asada on the nachos were overcooked and dry. I would skip the meat next time. Overall, a solid place in a tourist spot. It's worth checking out.

Yelp
This spot is our favorite my husband and I love it here the food is so fresh and Steph at the bar is great so hospitable and attentive. Great margaritas and tacos are so fresh!

Yelp
We were here for cinco de mayo. Big mistake because it was BUSY EVERYWHERE. No parking, had to park 20 mins walk away. It's our own fault. We had a group of 5 with 4 dogs and we had to wait maybe about 20-30 mins to get seated. It's a plus that their seatings are all dog friendly. They also had their own dog menu! So cute. Our waiter did his best to get our food going. There were ladies handing out free shots of the specials. We all enjoyed our margaritas, you can't go wrong with that. However, we didn't taste any alcohol. It was straight up juice and sugar. I've got chicken enchiladas and it was a bit dry.. needed more sauce. Wasn't fan of their beans that came with the food either. They also offered free chips and salsa. Their salsa was bland for my taste. Overall, I think it's worth a try. Good vibes.
google avatar

Lila P.

Yelp
Came during happy hour. Everything on the happy hour menu was $7 and you had to sit at the bar. From there, we got the mangonada and the watermelon sugar. Out of the two, the mangonada was the favorite. The tres street tacos with chicken was nice. Small but enough for me. And I'm not complaining about $7 tacos. For chips and salsa, the first basket was free. We also got a free photograph.
google avatar

Cassandra K.

Yelp
Haven't gone out for Cinco de Mayo in a long time but decided to meet up with some friends in Old Town for some drinks and food. None of us had been here and were impressed with the spacious layout - absolutely perfect for our party that included 4 dogs! The portion size for the food was good for the price as well. Like other reviews mentioned, Casa de Freds might be a bit "touristy" but the ambiance and staff were great. They were also offering free shots of the tequila that they were promoting (forgot which one). Might have to come back for Taco Tuesday in the future! Can't forgot to mention the yummy margaritas rimmed with Tajin.
google avatar

Stephanie P.

Yelp
This place is a great place to grab some drinks and have a taco. They have an amazing special for one beer and a tequila shot for $14. Loved it here! Stephanie Z took care of us and she was amazing! Will return! Outstanding service!

Vicky B.

Yelp
Wonerful time meeting old friends from the east coast for lunch at Freds. Our server was very knowledgeable about all the tequilas and stopped to chat with us even though he was busy with other tables. We enjoyed every taco from the taco Tuesday menu and the chips and salsa came free at the table. They even have a doggie menu for you pup and ours licked his plate clean! We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Camille H.

Yelp
I like the atmosphere in here. The décor is fun and the colors are festive! There are lots of seating options (inside and out). Even on a very busy Cinco de Mayo, staff was friendly and attentive. We got the rolled tacos. They were just the right amount of crunchy. They were a little bland and dry but they were perfect with a little added salsa (which came free with chips for the table). The salsa is not spicy at all fyi. I got the shrimp enchiladas which were good. They had a tasty sauce on top and the beans and rice that came with it were well cooked and the beans were actually delicious. I don't usually like black beans but these had a great flavor. My mom got the chicken breast fajitas which I thought were a bit dry. The homemade tortillas were really good though, especially warm and fresh. The strawberry margarita tasted like a slushy. Not very strong but I liked it.

Yelp
Bad experience on a Saturday night. We booked a reservation and arrived at the restaurant about 20 minutes later. And they refused to seat us because we didn't make the reservation 2 hours ahead of time. I asked to speak to the manager and they had a security person come talk to me. The hostess got super combative and we walked away. Horrible experience. If you have a reservation, the restaurant should honor it regardless of when it was made. If you choose to leave your reservation system open on OpenTable, that's your bad. No bueno.

Yelp
I've only had the Molcajete .. it's the best that Ive had. Every protein is delicious the sauce is mild not too spicy and very flavorful.. comes with flour tortillas side of rice and beans.. it's big so I share with my wife leave us very satisfied. 3 stars due to service, you can get annoyed fairly quickly. They have around 3/4 servers and multiple empty tables . I don't understand why they don't use them . Might as well not have them. This last time we went . After waiting in line for 15min . They finally came and offered us a table but that we had to leave within an hour since it was reserved ‍. Meanwhile there's other parties finished , why just not use those table for reservation arrives. Overall you'll have a good time

Yelp
First off - Tito, you're running an excellent restaurant. We absolutely adore you and your staff - especially Brandon. He was friendly, calm, fast, happy and made our experience great. We also appreciate you recognizing us, welcoming us and making us feel like we are at home. We won't go anywhere else for Mexican food.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was all right. I would not willingly go out of my way to return but i might eat there again if in the area. Loved the colorful chairs Didn't understand no knives given with fork, had to go hunt down a server Nice servers Guac was tasteless Chips were hot yey, salsa was mild but good Quesadilla was great - browned cheese all over yum There was piña!

Yelp
Stumbled in since the Cafe Coyote across the street looked way too crowded. Had an awesome lunch with great friendly service. Tito the Manager took great care of us. Wanted to take a picture of our food, but it's gone now. Mariah was our server and she was super friendly and also took care of us. We will definitely be back next time we are in old town SD.

Yelp
Was strolling Old Town and decided it was time for a refreshment and whaddayaknow it's happy hour. We grabbed a couple seats at the bar. Bartender was quick to greet us and provide waters. Perfect. Happy Hour is 3-6pm daily and items are $7. Nice. Tried: El Perfecto Skinny with Corralejo Blanco-happy to have a skinny option Primavera Lemonade with Cutwater Hibiscus Vodka and East Imperial Yuzu Lemon-refreshing and dangerous because they go down too easy. Mini nachos w/chicken-wouldn't call this "mini". Beans, cheese, pick, sour cream, cilantro, onion, jalapeños and we added chicken. Exceeded our expectations and we ate it all. Service was friendly and fast, too. It truly was a couple of happy hours.
google avatar

Angelina C.

Yelp
Service: let me start off by saying they are MUCH more friendly here than across the street at Cafe Coyote! After waiting an hour or so for two different restaurants across from Fred's, we asked the front desk staff at Fred's if they could seat our large party (including our doggie). They were super friendly and said they could seat us right away. Our waitress was amazing even though they were extremely busy. I don't blame her for not being able to come around more often to check on us; but it felt like we hardly saw her. For instance, we wanted to order more chips and salsa but we didn't see her for about 30 mins after placing drink orders. Same thing after receiving our food- we couldn't find her to ask for more condiments, napkins, etc. 3/5 Food: The food took quite a while to come out, but our drinks came quickly and they were strong! Lots of different flavors here. We ordered some blended strawberry margaritas and some watermelon margaritas on the rocks. Drinks were great! Food, however, was just alright. We ordered a cheese enchilada plate, some carne asada fries, and carne asada tacos. We didn't care for the entrees we ordered. My sister and I thought the meat was dry and none of us finished our plates. However, our waitress surprised us at the end of our meal with some birthday churros and they were great! Crispy and flavorful. 3/5 Ambiance: it's nice here for a late night outing! They have string lights and plants, with nice music. It's not too loud here, we could all hear each other just fine. 3/5

Yelp
If I went to Old Town more often, I would have definitely been a regular at Casa de Freds! It seems like many people are already - this place gets busy even for a random weeknight! - PARKING - There's street parking but also a lot nearby that you can walk from! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - Very welcoming staff, and they were very attentive throughout our meal service! The restaurant is quite large, with several table seatings inside and outside available. After we ordered, the food did not take long to come out, which was great since we were hungry! They have specials on specific days, so be sure to check out their social media for more! - FOOD - Shrimp Ceviche ($14.95): I personally like other seafood as Ceviche over Shrimp, but this was still a great appetizer! Taco Plate ($16.95): We got the Baja Fish and the Spicy Pork Adobada. Both were delicious in their own ways! The Fish was nice and crispy, and the Adobada had a great sweet and savory flavor. Ginormous Molcajete ($46.45): Be ready to share this with a party, or be prepared to take food home because this truly is GINORMOUS! Filled to the brim with carne asada, bacon wrapped shrimp, cream salsa verde, guajillo and more, this packs a ton of flavor and food! Flan & Bunuelos ($7.45): Flan was delicious! I think the Bunuelos got a bit stale, but they were still ok! - OVERALL - Definitely keeping this spot in the back of my head for Taco Tuesdays and for those B.A.Ms!!!

Yelp
Found a coupon for buy one get one free entree in the Old Town San Diego booklet. It's been over 10 years since we've come to this restaurant so we said okay let's go ahead and try it again. So we ordered fajitas the beef with flour tortillas. The presentation was nice however it didn't taste so great. The beans were like paste, they tasted like the rosarita beans that are refried out of the can with a little bit of cheese sprinkled on it for flavor. The three tortillas that come with the dish or hard along the sides and we're not tasty. There was enough steak in the dish to make three tacos, heavily combined with onions bell peppers and Padilla I think it was and a few other Chili's and a jalapeno grilled. The rice is not what I was expecting it was white rice with a hint of lime it was very tasty but just not what I was expecting. It came with a little corn muffin that was a little overcooked but it was okay. The topper to this dinner is that we got our bill they billed it wrong then the manager comes, we explain to him we had the coupon and we showed it to the waiter before we ordered so they adjust the bill, also the manager asked how we liked our mail, we said the beans were just as I described so he went to the kitchen and said that yes they were very dry and that usually they are not and he said he had them thin them down whatever that means, I guess they could have thinned them down the best they could they would still taste bad these were not homemade beans these were definitely from a can, although the waitress argued that they are homemade there's just no way. The bill comes back with an extra charge for a soda. At this point we just wanted out of there we told the waiter that the bill was still wrong we only ordered one soda and it was a Coke the waitress came and asked him if he wanted a refill and he said yes a root beer. So the bill shows one Coke and one root beer and we explained to the waiter that it was only one drink with one refill he was just too lazy to go back and adjust the bill or just didn't want to deal with his manager again and said oh no because it was refilled with a different flavor it's considered two sodas they do not charge for refills, so unsure what he expected out of this from us. We just let it go but it seems like he feels justified because of his mistake the first time and then second of all having a coupon he felt we had to pay somehow how Petty. The shakedown of a tourist coming into Old Town for a few measly $4 for a drink. Incredible I wonder if that affects his raise.

Yelp
Explore Old Town San Diego and @casadefreds Mexican restaurant. We started with chips, 4 different kinds of salsa and a Blue Hawaiian cocktail. Fred's Street Corn and Cool Ranch Grilled Corn Ribs were delicious and a fun way to eat corn. Grilled Corn Ribs, Fun Crumbles, Sour Cream, Tapatio, Cotija, and Cilantaro - a combination of flavors that truly pack a punch! The Shrimp Enchiladas were stuffed with shrimp, melted jack cheese in a corn tortillas, topped with Ranchero sauce. The Cauliflower Al Pastor Taco was a creative twist on the traditional taco and a favorite of ours. The florets were tender and flavorful and didn't make me miss the meat in it. The Mahi Mahi Tacos, were served on a corn tortilla and topped with Baja Creme. The Ginormous Molcajete is a traditional Mexican dish. This one had carne asada, chicken breast, mahi mahi, bacon-wrapped shrimp, salsa verde, guajillo, quest fresca, jack cheese, cilantro, fried jalapeno, spring onion and a large cheese crisp. Served with homemade flour tortillas, rice and beans. The patio is also dog friendly. It was Fuzzy approved.

Yelp
The service from the moment you walk up is welcoming and inviting. We happened to make it during happy hour. The hostess Chrissy was very nice and friendly. D the bartender made me a great drink called Watermelon Sugar. I would have to say this place is underrated. The food is absolutely delicious and you can tell it is made fresh. We ordered the street corn ribblets. Wow. All the ingredients were fresh and delicious. Their happy hour menu is a great deal as well. You can sit outside and people watch or sit inside on comfy intimate booths. The choice is yours. I recommend this place if you are ever in Ild Town, San Diego. The service is fantastic. The food is amazing. The ambiance is so chill. Don't miss out on great food, drinks and service.

Yelp
After my boyfriends dad had been raving about this spot in Old Town we decided to finally check it out! This spot is pretty big with lots of outdoor seating but we decided to sit at the bar and enjoy some drinks while watching the end of the Padres game. Sitting at the bar service is normally pretty quick which I like and the ladies bartending seemed to be having a great time and made the environment more lively which was fun. We ended up just ordering some food to take home since we had been out and about for awhile. We all ordered different things and it was alright by the time we got home so hard to tell but you can't go wrong with a chicken quesadilla. We did fill up on plenty of chips and salsa while we were there too!

Yelp
The best taco on the menu is the Spicy Pork Adobada tacos. They're well seasoned, filled with tender marinated pork, fresh garnish, and a soft corn tortilla. They're delicious!! The churro donuts with the home made cajeta and chocolate are amazing, must try them! They're crispy on the outside and soft inside, and aren't too sweet despite looking very sweet. The Spicy Guava-Rita and the Tamarindo Margaritas are so so good, some of the best I've had!! So definitely stop by for drinks and desserts!! Some of their other items needed salt to boost their flavor but I found things that were well seasoned and delicious! The service is good, my server was very attentive and accommodating. The ambiance is casual. It's good for small or big groups. They're dog friendly and even have a menu for dogs, and they care for a few cats on the premises that you can play with too!

Yelp
It's not the best, but it's not the worst either. It is one of the better places on that strip of restaurants. The tacos are good, and the aguachile was pretty tasty. My son loves it here so we always stop by anytime we are in SD. It wouldn't be my choice to stop, but the service is always great there and the ambiance is fun. So we go. I can't say I've ever been disappointed here, so that is why I go back....also cause my son won't let me not go lol.
google avatar

Yelp
The food at Fred's used to be way better for Taco Tuesday. The chips guac and queso are pretty good still. the drinks are good even though I didn't have any cocktails tonight. The shrimp taco was not that good, no flavor. The white fish was good, and they ran out of brisket and filet mignon which is what I wanted to try. The options and the quality was better at one point...kind of disappointing this time around sadly.

Yelp
I came across this spot and decided to check it out. Host was sweet and seated me right away. 1st basket of chips and salsa are complimentary. I ordered a strawberry margarita and that was really good! My food however, was rather disappointing. It arrived cold, which was weird considering they weren't really busy, and I didn't wait very long for it to come. Overall, I'd probably only comeback for the drinks.
google avatar

Nyssa B.

Yelp
I feel like you can never go wrong with Fred's. I've always have such a great experience while dinning in here. Staff is always on it no matter who you get, always checking in on you making sure you have everything you need. I feel like they have something for everyone on the menu which is always a plus to have variety. Food and drinks are always delicious. If you stop in and try it out I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Yelp
LUNCHING (3 stars) FACT: Caesar Salad originated from Tuijuana, Mexico. Old Town... Gringo Mexican food. Searching for pozole and caesar salad in Old Town brought me here. - FOOD: ok - SERVICE: wonderful - PRICE: fair - AMBIANCE: typical Old Town eatery :: FOOD/DRINK :: STRAWBERRY MARGARITA ($8.95) - the most popular flavor at this restaurant. I barely if ever drink margaritas but this one was on. I did ask for extra strawberry pure to add to my drink because I love strawberries. You can order it on the rocks or blended. I usually would do blended but would easily get full. RECOMMEND CHIPS & SALSA ($free) - not hating on free food but their chips and salsa was pretty good. The chips thin and crispy, not thick with a hard crunch. I felt the chips were very fresh... yet not greasy fresh out the fryer. The salsa was nice, I kept eating it. Was not spicy, was not tangy, just perfect and simple. SOUP & SALAD COMBO ($14.95) - I went with a cup of Pozole Rojo and a Caesar salads. I love how this combo exist, sometimes you don't want to eat a huge plate of Mexican food. I did not expect this much food with such a simple order of soup and salad. The Caesar Salad was AMAZING. Probably one of the best I've had in Old Town. The chicken was nicely grilled and very tender and flavorful. The salad was mixed well with dressing and shredded parmesan. This salad WAS the highly of the meal. Not so much for the Pozole Rojo. That was a very weak and poorly executed Pozole. No hearty deliciousness in the pozole broth, the broth was so bland. It did have all the fixings and herbs and small bites of tender pork but the overall taste was disappointing. I'm not even Mexican and I make way better homemade pozole than this. It was as if it was a fresh batch without letting the flavors marinate and I was given the top skim of the pot when the good stuff was probably at the bottom. I'd come back to only eat the Caesar salad and eat free chips and salsa but definitely not in a rush to come back. Until the next review...

Yelp
My wife and I do date nights every Sunday, and every few months we decide to walk around old town, stop in at freds, and then go to seaworld. I've never had a "bad" experience here, but never one good enough to leave a review, as I'm a very very picky eater and restaurant goer, and i have high standards for what I pay for. However, this time was different. It started with our server (Mariah or Moriah, I forgot to ask about spelling) really hyping up my wife. First thing she did was talk about how beautiful her eyelashes are (which is a huge insecurity she has, like she will cry in the car if her eyelashes are not "perfect"). And at first we joked that the waitress was REALLY working for a good tip, but then I noticed the experience wasn't typical, normally i get irritated by wait staff constantly coming and bothering us about every little thing, but then when you need them they're nowhere to be found. however Mariah simply did what was necessary, didnt do the typical "food is in your mouth is it good?" Thing wait staff usually does, and when we did actually need her, she was already walking our way, no flagging down necessary. Now As I said I'm also a very picky eater. I can taste really minute details that are funky, my most common remark is "yeah its just annoying cause i could make this quality at home, and having to pay and be at a restaurant for the same quality just sucks" maybe thats on me cause I tend to order things that I already do make at home, or have made before, however, this time was also noticeably different. The quality of my burrito was beyond expectations, the tortilla was very clearly fresh, the carne asada was tender and juicy, but also had that flame-touched bark it gets, it was seasoned well, i did not have a single bad bite that you normally get in a burrito, and my wife's food was equally as immaculate. And if you need ANY more convincing about this review I have 2 more remarks, 1) If you look at reviews I've posted, they're almost all negative, as I said I'm PICKY 2) we were so happy with everything we told the manager that it was the best dining experience we have had, and they comped us a churro dish, and when my wife told me about it ( i had to use the restroom and she was texting me) I assumed, classic theme park style churros, but no, these churros were beautiful and tasted delicious, they're pictured in this review. Definitely coming back more often

Yelp
What a great place! This is right in the center of Old town San Diego! We got to enjoy a wonderful meal out in the sunshine. Tito was absolutely amazing! We got their surf and turf fajitas along with their carne asade plate. Their margaritas are amazing and strong

Yelp
I've been here twice now. The first time was with one of my friends and we shared the chicken chingaderas, queso dip, taco plate, rice and beans, and churros! I tried some of her Blue Hawaiian cocktail and another drink. They also have B.A.M., and ours was blue like the ocean and came with a few rubber duckies. We were also given complimentary chips and salsa, which were very addicting. The queso dip was really yummy! For tacos, we tried the shrimp, adobada, carne asada, mahi mahi, and cheeseburger! It was a nice variety, but cheeseburger was a bit weird LOL. The churros came with cajeta and chocolate sauce, so make sure you dip into both! There is even someone offering to take your photo and sells the prints if you want to purchase. I went again last month with my hubby. We were brought out chips and salsa and they were still addicting haha. For drinks, I got a mocktail and he tried some kind of tamarind cocktail with a side of Mezcal. My drink was very refreshing and he liked his too. The queso dip was not as good as I remember- seemed like they used a different type of cheese this time. He opted for a cup of pozole and two taco plate for his entree. I went for the fajitas! The portions were pretty big! The fajitas came out on a sizzling plate and had rice, beans, salsa, and fresh flour tortillas. It was delicious and one of their signature dishes. We decided to get the churro tower for dessert and it was still pretty good. There was someone going around taking photos of customers again, but you aren't obligated to purchase the prints. I can't wait to go back to try their molcajete next time!

Yelp
Complimentary chips and salsa. Refillable sodas, count me in! Found this place on OpenTable when we were pretty desperate, as 2 of the other places were chock full...no reservations available and no walk-ins. The crowd was pretty thin. The tortillas are housemade. The chicken was perfectly grilled. The steak fajitas were flavored really well and the salsa was perfect. We saved room for the churros. GET THEM.

Yelp
CHIPS, SALSA, QUESO - INCLUDED! No complaints here! Pretty good considering the price - FREE! :) GREAT SPOT FOR DRINKS & CHIPS If you're coming for drinks and just chips, salsa and queso - THIS IS THE SPOT! BUT IF YOU'RE HUNGRY... If you're in Old Town, there are a lot of pretty good places to eat. This is one of them. You'll be satisfied. Just not amazed. But the servers are super friendly and that's always a big plus!

Yelp
Freds is now the go-to place in Old Town. Its been a staple since I moved to San Diego 20 years ago, and they have only gotten better and better. Great location, great fresh mexican food, great hand-made margaritas, great prices, great customer service. It doesnt get any better than Freds. If youre a local, or a tourist, in Old Town - Freds is the place to go. The food quality, taste and presentation is excellent. They have something for everyone; from ceviche, to tacos, quesadillas, pozole soup, fajitas, mild salsas to habanero-melt-your-mouth salsa, etc, etc. Freds has a fantastic selection of hand-made legit margaritas, but they have a full bar for those that dont do tequila. I usually have 1 margarita (im not a huge fan of tequila), but Freds margaritas were so good I ended up having 5; skinny marg, passion fruit, cucumber watermelon, tamarindo, spicy. All were great, I suggest subbing sour mix for lime juice. The service we got was phenomenal, from the hostess, to the bar tender, our waitress and the assist. Gen. Manager. We had a large party of 25 people for a work event and they had no problem accommodating us. The hostess at the front was very welcoming and showed us where the rest of our party was waiting at the bar. The bar had great happy hour specials while we waited for the rest of our group. Our waitress Moriah single-handily oversaw our big party, and she never missed a beat and had a great attitude the whole time. Tito the assist. General Manager came by to check on us multiple times and we chatted about other events that Freds hosts. The drinks came out super quick, no one was ever waiting for the next round. The food for our big party all came out at the same time and all was freshly made. We had a set time to leave to catch the Ghost Tour and Moriah made sure we made the schedule, but never felt rushed or behind. Thank you Freds for the excellent dinner event, we're looking forward to doing it again!

Yelp
While the establishment across the street was slammed, Fred's didn't have a line, which was great, considering the food was comparable. We were seated right away, along with our friends, and service was pretty good. While the food was good, it wasn't so outstanding that it was memorable. Good chips and salsa, good margaritas, good burritos and enchiladas. Now, was it better than the taco shop down the street from our house? No, but they do serve alcohol. So, if you're going for table service and outdoor seating with the Old Town vibe, then Fred's is just as good as any other casual dining restaurant in the area.

Yelp
Bizarre experience at Fred's. The hostess refused to seat our party of 5 people even though there were multiple open tables and we had been waiting for over 20 min. We offered to be patient and order drinks and she basically told us there was nothing she could do and they couldn't seat anyone else at this time. We could continue to wait, who knows for how long, or we could leave. It was pretty rude and combative so we went across the street only to watch her proceed to seat 3 tables with no wait. Totally soured my experience of Fred's. Recommend some hospitality training for hostess.
