Hotel Casa de la Real Aduana, Patzcuaro, Mexico - Explore & Book

"The first Royal Customs House of the Pacific Coast was built in Patzcuaro, in the 1540s. In perfect hacienda style, with a wraparound veranda and a sunny central courtyard, it's a gem of colonial architecture. In 2004 it opened as an intimate hotel - one of the best in Mexico, thanks to its artist owners Gemma and Didier. All who stay are captivated by the art, which ranges from a funky collection of Mexican dolls to an exquisite carving of the Virgin and Child. From the lemon verbena tea brought to your room in the evening to communal breakfasts at the long table by the open fire, the attention to detail is enchanting. The casa may not be open to children, but this is in no way a precious period piece. Time your visit if you can to coincide with a recital - perhaps rousing classical guitar on the candlelit patio, or a piano solo in the hotel's music room. The situation, too, cannot be faulted, a step from the Plaza Grande. Best of all, you're made to feel at home from the moment you arrive. Highs Warm, gracious and artistic owners Exquisite restoration of a listed house Fascinating collection of art and crafts from all eras Enchanting patios and a central courtyard garden Regular concerts in the music room or on the veranda Loving attention paid to every detail Lows Children aren't welcome There are noisy firecrackers when religious festivals take place in town - a small price to pay! Food offering is limited to a (hearty) continental breakfast each morning" - Handpicked by our hotel experts

Casa de la Real Aduana is truly a gem in Pátzcuaro. It is an art-filled sanctuary maintained with incredible attention to detail by its remarkable owners, Gemma and Didier. We'd been dreaming of visiting during Día de Muertos, and in 2025 we finally made it! We were absolutely blown away upon arrival by the decorations—the authenticity and aesthetics created unparalleled and absolutely breathtaking visuals. The location is superb: it's steps from the main Plaza Grande, yet the property itself is so tranquil that you immediately feel removed from all the hustle and bustle upon stepping through the doors. For music lovers, be sure to ask for a chance to spend time in Didier's incredible audio room; it will totally blow your mind and might make you second-guess your own sound system at home! The property also attracts delightful and fascinating fellow guests, providing charming company throughout your journey. To top it off: the wonderful staff are meticulous and warm, and the entire home is immaculately maintained. If that still isn't enough, Tubo, their delightful adopted dog, only adds to the warmth and charm of your stay. If you seek a sophisticated, serene, and deeply welcoming experience, this is the perfect choice.

😊: A magical place to stay for a while. The owners, Gemma and Didier, are so hospitable and interesting, we felt right at home here. They have an incredible art collection that they’ve furnished the hotel with, and have some amazing stories to tell. Definitely stay here if you’re coming to Patzcuaro or the region!. 😢: Everything was fantastic!.

This place is beyond incredible! Didier and Gemma are truly wonderful hosts, and made us feel so at home for the days we spent here. The hotel itself is in a historical building, is filled to the brim with tasteful art, and is centered around a very peaceful garden. Breakfast is delicious, and the service is impeccable. This is a perfect base to explore Patzcuaro and the surrounding towns. We're planning to go back!

This is a most extraordinary hotel. |The rooms are grand spaces, lavishly decorated, beautifully furnished, bright and airy by day and solidly dark at night, and above all, they are quiet and comfortable. ||The grounds are positively magical. They are beautifully landscaped and every room has an outdoor seating area to enjoy the space. Best of all, everywhere you look there are imaginatively arranged displays of artwork and of area crafts- pottery, sculpture, embroidered and woven pieces.||The hosts and staff are helpful- even anticipatory- and I concur with the many comments that speak to the beautiful breakfasts (and the tray of tea and cake that’s delivered to your room when you return from a day’s outing).||It was a special and memorable stay at the Casa de la Real Aduana. |

Didier and Gemma are gracious, marvelous hosts with a remarkable attention to detail. They’ve curated a stunning retreat for their guests, whom they welcome to their beautiful boutique hotel as though family, from the moment of arrival. Don’t miss a visit to Didier’s studio, the artist talk, or the wines from Gemma’s family vineyards— or a few minutes in the music room after dinner. They are both charming, lovely proprietors with a knack for creating wonderful memories for their visitors with seemingly uncanny ease. One the best places we’ve ever stayed in our travels and we’re certain to be back.

This is probably one of the most beautiful hotels my wife and I have ever been to. The owners Didier and Gemma are wonderful and friendly. Their house is a lovely place of music, art and beautiful gardens. Patzcuaro and the nearby towns of Quiroga and Tzintzuntan, are peaceful places to visit and have plenty of attractions. We hope to go back and stay longer, now that we have discovered this amazing combination of beautiful little towns, great people and the memorable Casa de la Real Aduana hotel.

Extraordinary things do happen- just occasionally. Somehow we found ourselves at Real Aduana. To call this “a property” or a “hotel” misses the point. Real Aduana is an experience, and indeed an extraordinary one. It is found in Patzcuaro, a delightful Mexican town with true character and of great interest. Real Aduana is only a few steps from the main square. Its courtyard garden and rooms are exquisite, and indeed as mentioned elsewhere are packed with artworks. From Patzcuaro Morelia is less than an hour’s drive. The villages around the lake are full of interest, and indeed we visited the Sanctuario El Rosario to witness the Monarch butterflies, coming to the end of their Winter hibernation, a truly spectacular sight. But to return to Real Aduana, and what truly separates it from the pack. We have travelled far and wide over many years, but we have never met hosts like Didier and Gemma. We weren’t staying in a hotel, we had a house party. Gemma is a wonderful hostess, and knows what you need before you know you need it. We wanted to see the butterflies and it was entirely down to Gemma that we were able to do this. Didier is a photographer, and artist- but perhaps above all a man of ideas and wonderful conversations. The warmth of their greeting and goodbye were genuine. I truly hope that this is not au revoir but rather a bientot.
