Thank you Professor Ambers amd family for sharing your wealth of knowledge with the community. Unfortunately, much of history has been concealed, misconstrued and/or forgotten. Much love and respect for keeping it preserved and alive! (Photos of the book taken with permission)

Google
This place provided a phenomenal educational experience for our group of 25 young adults from L.A. Kudos to the founder and owner who is a professor and historian, with deep knowledge of everything in the museum. Will definitely return and spend more time there.

The professor had a great passion and knowledge, making for a fantastic experience. I highly recommend visiting for any history enthusiast.

You can tell this man is so passionate about what he talks about. He talks about missing history we’re never taught in school when it comes to black and latin history. His parrot is super cute too!

The exhibits at casa del rey moro are top-notch, offering a fascinating blend of african and latin history. a must-visit for those seeking unique cultural experiences.

Google
There's a lot of information to be seen but you can tell when a tour guide doesn't know what they're giving you a your on. The door fee is super inexpensive and you get a study guide to take notes on. Not a good place to visit for folks with a physical disability.

It's an African Museum in San Diego that is operated by one if the Black Studies professors at San Diego State University. A lot historical things there from Africa, Black America, black Europeans if you want a real deal history this is a great place to come.

Visited San Diego on a business trip last year and was looking to learn a little history. Stumbled across this museum while in an Uber and asked the driver to let us out. Thank you Professor Ambers for taking the time to educate me and my wife the true history of the black ancestors and San Diego. Learned so much in such little time. I live in D.C. but will travel back to San Diego just to visit the museum again.

Yelp
Owner is a brilliant and sweet man. He can talk and talk, but he's a wonderful story teller. It was a joy and an inspiration as another black man to listen about black history in San Diego.

Yelp
I visited because of the reviews posted on Yelp. As a history teacher, I came ready to learn and the owner not only taught me about this history of African influence, but he taught me a new approach to teaching history that engages well! He is so educated and passionate about his topic! The museum is arranged by continent and the artifacts, posters, and books numerous! Definitely a place to stop if you want to learn. Give yourself time- not to be rushed as hearing the stories is the best part of the visit.

Yelp
One of the best museums on African history. I highly recommend visiting the museum. Very informative

Yelp
Honestly was just killing some time on a Friday when me and my friend stumbled across this place in old town. We've walked by it a million times but decided to go in... This was an extremely eye opening experience with more history than I ever anticipated learning. My mind is truly blown and the owner is someone I could listen to for hours. Don't judge by the outside, the contents of this little museum are truly mind blowing...and I wasn't even planning on a history lesson. CHECK THIS PLACE OUT

Yelp
I visited this museum two years ago in February for Black History Month. My husband and I were really excited because San Diego lacks African and African American culture. When we arrived to the museum it was much smaller than we expected. It is about the size of an average house in San Diego. The artifacts are not as intriguing as I hoped it to be. Also, this is more like an African American Mexican museum because a lot history was based out of Mexico. My husband and I were the only visitors so we received a personal tour. The tour guide was friendly and informative. I was hoping to celebrate my culture especially because I am in interracial relationship and it was the opportunity for my huaband to observe my history. It is a good place to visit if you have extra time to spend in Old Town, but I wouldn't go out my to visit.

Yelp
I have visited twice and received the full tour by Professor Chuck Ambers. He is a wealth of information and history and has many artifacts. Do not be fooled by the house's humble appearance. It does not look like your typical museum but it is definitely the best museum in San Diego hands down. It is a bit cramped and the professor is one of those au natural types so stand back a little from him if you catch my drift.

Yelp
Listen, if you're reading this, listen up. This is a very unique San Diego Treasure. Totally run by one guy, with one objective, and one goal. He's eloquent, funny, and detailed. The place is eclectic and fun. If you're visiting San Diego, and in the area - you're in Old Town. Old Town is about historical as your instagram feed. Buy a burrito, take a picture on a wooden sidewalk, and get some ceramic stuff that's really from China. Then: Stop by here. Truthfully, honestly, and really - a hole in the wall of a unique view of African American History. Self run by a man with a vast historical knowledge that will likely fade away with him. He runs on donations, but doesn't solicit them - pay up when you stop by - a guy has to eat. Allot 30 minutes to an hour to hear his story. He's the real deal - been there done that, researched it all. He's not political, out to change your mind about anything, just to talk about history from the perspective of someone who's watched it over the years, taught it over the years and lived it over the years. It's not neat and clean. But life isn't, so why should a museum teaching you history be? It's ramshackle, but so varied your eyes will not ever be wanting for something new to look at.

Yelp
The man (& bird) behind the counter are super knowledgeable about African artifacts! He also has a bunch of stories to tell about his travel experience. I'm sad we couldn't stay longer to enjoy his walk through experience. I recommend stopping by and hearing what he has to say!

Yelp
Lots of knowledge about African American history no matter the day in time is hidden away in this little building. I was out in San Diego visiting over the MLK holiday weekend and realized there is not much history about AA's here. So my brother and I decided to end our day here. We were greeted by the owner and he took us on a very informative tour throughout the building. It's very small mind you but there is a lot of history under this roof. You can take pictures of some things but not others. They consider some artwork off limits since they plan to sell it. Overall the tour was very informative and they suggest a small donation of $7 I believe. We donated and took a picture with the little bird that was there. We didn't buy anything but they will offer to sell most if not all things in there.

Yelp
Professor chuck Ambers is my old professor from 6 years ago. I loved coming to his museum, he has a ton of items! Not to mention he is extremely knowledgeable. The owner is a very sweet man who has a huge passion for what he does.

Yelp
More of a store than a museum. The man who owns it gives a tour, but once you go in he is extremely adamant that you only move or look at what he wants and he quizzes you (a former teacher) on what you are looking at. He could be nice and charming, but he's just the opposite. A little rude and off putting if you just want to look around. The smell is pretty bad in there, and the rooms are crowded, but like I mentioned he has many beautiful items and an depth knowledge of all of them. If you don't mind grouchy old men and want to learn about African-American history, then this is the place for you! There were some items I would have liked to purchase, but he was such a jerk I changed my mind.

Yelp
Sooooo much history in such a small place. This is not your typical museum but it is full of rich history that you will be so fascinated by. You just have to keep an open mind and try to forget about your experiences at other museums and not try to compare it to them because that will just take away from the stories he has to tell. The owner is a professor of African History and is so passionate. He has 3 rooms separated into Africa, Spanish/Latin America, and US including San Diego. My girlfriend and I came in the day before Veteran's Day, two days after the 2016 Presidential Elections. Not one time did he voice his opinion on either candidates. He only says things that can be referenced and never anything that is a folklore. He is also a Veteran and we felt that it was the perfect time to come into his museum. It will give you a different perspective on the world without someone trying to change your views. He is a collector and has some amazing things in this gem that you may have never dreamt you'd see in your entire life. Or things that you might possibly have wanted to for yourself but couldn't find where to purchase it. Lots of signed collectible items from some amazingly historical people. Including King James of Cleveland Hahah. Make sure you set aside at least an hour of time. He asks for a really small donation. We gave him more because the experience really was worth much more than what he was asking and I still feel like we didn't give him enough. He also has a shop at the front where you can buy a bunch of cool authentic things he brought back with him from his travels around the world.

Yelp
You should know what you're getting into. This is nothing like a Smithsonian museum or art gallery, it's a small and intimate experience where you can learn a ton of black history (both in the US and worldwide, going back centuries) from a truly passionate and knowledgeable teacher. Mr. Ambers was very welcoming and engaging, even though we had no idea what was going on at first. We thought we were walking into a store, but we just decided to go along with it and see what it was all about. Many of the items are for sale (at very reasonable prices, considering their cultural and historical value) while others are too rare or priceless to be sold. I ended up buying a small wooden mask from the room with the African artifacts. Note: there's an African gray parrot and also a gopher snake, both in cages, inside the store/museum. This is not your average tourist destination with lines and tickets and cheap souvenirs, this is the real deal. Go in with an open mind, take your time, ask questions, and leave a donation if you're so inclined!

Yelp
By far the best museum in the state of California. Professor Chuck Ambers has a wealth of knowledge and a winning personality to match. He or one of his friendly staff will lead you through a tour of the museum. You will learn thousands upon thousands of years worth of history in an a hour's time. This is an African museum devoted to showing the history of African people as it pertains to the world. A great place to learn true history, not just HIS story. I suggest that everyone go to this museum at least once in your life.

Yelp
If you got the time and you're into history it is worth a stop for sure. The owner is full of knowledge and so nice. Tons of African and Latino history jammed into a little place learning that Hispanics and African Americans share a lot of history together.
