The Vestiges of Southern Portugal's Islamic Empire

"And at Casa do Alentejo, a cultural center in what was Lisbon's first casino, I read Arabic letters spelling out “Allah” chiseled into the stucco."

I don’t remember where I first saw it or why I marked it on my map, but this place is truly a hidden gem. I went there two evenings in a row, and both dishes—one fish, the other meat—were absolutely delicious. On the first evening, I tried the local plum dessert, and on the second, the creamy vegetable soup. The magnificent architecture, beauty, and historical texture of the place are simply incredible.

The location of this restaurant is the best thing about it. It is located inside a beautiful baroque design house with a small terrace in the middle that does not match the same look. The food was good, not great not terrible and the drinks choice is limited. Staff is friendly and funny, does not speak English very well but overall everything was OK. From my opinion you can find better restaurants in Lisbon!

Google
This place is tucked away, unless a local shares the details, you wouldn’t stumble across it. In a building, up a few flights of stairs and with guidance from the person inside, it’s difficult to find. Beautifully positioned in a couple of grand rooms. There are no fans nor air conditioning so be prepared to be very hot if it’s warm outside. The first waiter ignored us - I think it was because we weren’t sitting in his area. The second was quite friendly. We order meals and drinks that were all traditional Portuguese style and enjoyable. A nice experience.

Google
Beautiful place to enjoy an authentic Portuguese meal surrounded by azulejos (tiles). The location is in the heart of the tourist area - this restaurant is step above the standard tourist places just outside the door. The wine list is inexpensive and excellent with Alentejo wines the star. We enjoyed the seafood rice and lamb rice with our red wine. The desserts looked amazing but we were too full to attempt any on our visit. Highly recommend and we will bring guests visiting in the future to experience it all.

Google
This review is for the restaurant inside the main Casa do Alentejo building, not the rather more touristy one on the street near the entrance. If you do go inside you’ll be rewarded not just with a great restaurant, but with a really wonderful interior adorned with the most amazing tiles typical of the Alentejo region. The restaurant serves amazing Alentejo regional food at really very reasonable prices. I had really nice grilled swordfish, followed by a traditional plum tart. Really lovely local white wine. It’s worth getting the traditional Portuguese appetisers of bread, olives, and the really amazing tapenade. Shared starters, main courses, dessert and drinks came to about 150 euros for 4 people, which is pretty typical of the restaurants in this area of Lisbon. Although child friendly, this isn’t somewhere you’d want to bring very small noisy children. It does have a slightly more formal adult/family vibe. All in all if you want something a bit different, and not at all touristy, this place is definitely worth a try.

Google
While the building looks unassuming from the outside, the interior is actually quite beautiful. Unfortunately, the overall restaurant experience doesn’t live up to the setting. The food was average at best, priced higher than it should be, and the service left a bad impression. We ordered the pork and clams with potatoes—it looked great in photos, but the reality was underwhelming. The potatoes were over-fried, and the clams didn’t taste fresh. The second dish, swordfish on vegetables, was slightly better. The vegetables were nicely done, but the fish itself was just okay. To top it off, when it came time to pay, the waiter handed me the card machine and said, “press for tip.” After I entered 0, he asked, “why no tip?” and walked off. Very unprofessional, and it left a sour note on an already forgettable meal. Tip: Enjoy the interior, snap a photo, but skip dining here.

We sat in the blue tiled room and upon first glance, it looks beautiful. But up close, the walls were dirty - we were seated at the corner where the bar was and it was even dirtier. The service was also pretty slow, but the food was delicious

With delicious traditional Portuguese food, an amazing atmosphere, friendly staff, and a beautiful garden, it was a great and enjoyable dinner. The building looks quite unattractive from the outside, but as soon as you step onto the first stair, you're welcomed into a truly remarkable ambiance. The prices are average, and the portions are generous. If you enjoy experiencing something different with a touch of history, you should definitely visit this place.

Yelp
In Lisboa, Portugal, the food at Casa do Alentejo fell short of greatness but I valued the decor and the story to the place. The service was both professional and efficient. If you haven't visited yet, this location is worth a stop and ideal for capturing photos.

Yelp
Beautiful interior, and the element of surprise- you enter an unassuming green door and you enter a beautiful building and dining room is notable. However, the food was sooo salty and extremely overpriced, and I think I prefer the hospitality of the mom and pop places rather than the professional yet curt service here.

Yelp
Excellent. This building is 100 years+ The food is fabulous. I had the monkfish. My husband had swordfish. We stumbled upon this place our last night in Portugal and everything about it was memorable. The ambience is romantic. Trust your gps and go thru the door at the street. Climb 3 flights of stairs. The place is full of locals so you can trust it is very good.

Yelp
This restaurant is set in a beautiful building with a long history. The restaurant itself I felt was nothing special compared to many other restaurants in Lisbon. The food was good the service could have been better.

Yelp
We were very interested in this place because we heard about a beautiful setting, a cool location, and also, we had recently been on a hiking trip through the Alentejo the region on which this place's cuisine is based. The setting is fabulous. There are incredibly beautifully painted tiles that depict the Alentejo countryside, and really interesting idyllic farming scenes. We went here on a Friday night and the ambience was incredible. We thought we were really in for a hidden treat. The service was super attentive! Servers were awesome! They made sure my gluten issue was addressed! The place was packed to the gills but they still found a table for us! We got a really incredible wine recommendation, and we had a starter of goat cheese, walnuts, and honey that was truly memorable. But unfortunately, things went downhill after that. Both our mains were just very poor. I got a lamb stew, and my girlfriend got grilled sea bream. The stew was unfortunately "throwaway" pieces of lamb, with lots of gristle and fat. The sea bream was just OK but not particularly fresh or tasty. The vegetables that came with both dishes felt like they came from cans and had been reheated at least 1-2x. Remember, we have eaten in multiple small villages before coming back to Lisbon, and have had meals like this in far less expensive settings, in far more modest places - and those places were awesome. They were delicious, memorable, and they made me want to finish my entire plate at the expense of my waistline. Here, I couldn't (and wouldn't, sadly) finish my meal and it's a real shame, as this setting and service had such great potential.

Yelp
First night's dinner in Portugal was disappointing at this place. My friend hyped it up but the food ended up being really salty. And the best thing for me was the white wine! And I'm not a drinker but it was smooth, dry and crisp! Portuguese white wine tonight is the winner. The food was an utter failure.

Yelp
This place must have been or is an old social club. Before you get to the restaurant part of the building 3 walking flights up, you come in to a courtyard with social sitting spaces on all sides with placks of people who are no longer with us, a fountain and some trees. Then you follow the sign up another flight of stairs to the actually resturant. The staff again reminds of club staff, who are usually salaried & doesn't work for tips, are strait foreword, honest about the food & not very particular (I like this). I had the bread soup and pork & clams both were new to me. Aside from being kinda strong tasting (Cantonese like tastes less concentrated) the dishes where fascinating in a good way. I've had clams at the Military Club in Macau (amazing) before and was not taken aback with clams with pork. These clams where small & the pork was cured so salty. This is a traditional Portuguese dish and save for a he saltiness, it was great. The bread soup was interesting in that it was brothy, oily and full of garlic at the same time with a poached egg in it and chunks of bread. Back off the garlic & oil a bit and I would have loved it... I finished it nevertheless. When we left, all 3 rooms of the restaurant was filled and mostly by locals (not tourist) having a good time. The rooms/building were stately at one point but still has some charm under the scruffiness. If you are traveling through Lisbon, come try this place... Far better than the myriad of tourist traps just outside.

Yelp
Based on the recommendation of our superb car pool driver, we arrived at this restaurant. he waiter recommended us to try the fried pork with clams & the stewed lamb, and as water is just a bit cheaper than wine, we also got a small bottle of red wine. The Pork came with fried potato or what we may call "home fries" and a pile of clams. The pork was very succulent and cooked just right and paired with the clams and fries added up to a great bite (especially with the wine to wash it down). The star for me was the lamb. Its times like these I like to say, whats the knife for? To defend myself from people who try to steal my food? Because i definitely don't need it to cut this lamb. Not only was the lamb tender, it was seasoned not with anything fancy except for good olive oil, salt and some herbs which really allowed the lamb itself to shine through with its flavor. A little bit of wine, a little bit of lamb, and some break apart potatoes, and it equals a great meal. In addition to the meal itself, the venue itself had parts which seem to come straight from a museum, so definitely check this place out.

Yelp
This restaurant was in general a very good experience. Service was good, not great, sometimes we found Portuguese waiters to be a bit rude but I think it probably only was a matter of the language barrier and/or maybe, some cultural differences. In this restaurant the best we had was probably my dish, the fried cod "bacalhau frito con migas" served with chickpeas purée. Everyone at the table agreed on this but they liked theirs except my younger daughter's dish was a fiasco. The name is hard to remember, something sounded like "pica pau" Porco Preto - Black Pork. The two rice dishes were delicious, the Tamboril one is a fish named like that and it usually doesn't have any other seafood but this came with "gambones" similar to regular shrimp but big and better. The "arroz de borrego con cogumelos", goat rice which had mushrooms was gamier but delicious also. We chose the cheapest wine on the menu because it happened to be an Albariño and it was a win.

Yelp
A hidden gem with an outer appearance that gives no hint of its magnificent interior with exquisite tile work and Moorish influences. Difficult stairs to cafe and rooms on upper floors. Their menu offers good rural comfort food. Great as a venue for Alentejan events.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent food at this place. It's a small selection but very good to say the least. The prices are a little higher then average but you can get a decent bottle of wine for about €10. I'd come back, as the atmosphere is what's super unique about Casa do Alentejo

Yelp
This place was recommended to me from a friend from Lisbon who said its the place to go for the southern Portuguese cuisine. The setting was such a surprise as the place has a regular store front and then you walk into what seems like a small palace with beautiful woodwork and windows. The restaurant inside was actually huge and we enjoyed our meal and service. The seafood is the choice in Lisbon as its so fresh. I think I prefer the northern cuisine to southern but I enjoyed tasting it all.

Yelp
Upon the recommendation of our bike guide, we ate at Casa do Alentejo for lunch on New Year's Eve. This turned out to be a great recommendation from a local once you enter the Casa do Alentejo from the street, you ascend a grand flight of stairs and enter a Moroccan courtyard. Stop for a picture there before you proceed to the second floor you'll find a grand library and ballroom, both of which were closed but could be viewed through a roped-off area. There are two connected dining rooms there where we flagged down a server to get a table. We ordered the vegetable soup, mixed salad, roasted salmon with potatoes and lamb chops with fries and sautéed spinach. We also enjoyed a bottle of house red wine, Portuguese draft beer and sparkling water. Lunch was finished with a chocolate mouse and pudding. All of this was tasty, well prepared and served in an historic, grand setting, for approximately 75E. Definitely worth a visit if you are looking for a relaxing lunch that provides good value in s memorable setting.

Yelp
Beautiful space, food is simple but you get what you order. Simple dishes that are flavourful without too many fillers. Staff is friendly, but the space.... a must see...

Yelp
You come here for the architecture of this restaurant + the portuguese food ! Found that restaurant on my app and wow, what a nice surprise ! Big palace with Moorish architecture, many rooms, you will probably get lost, beautiful details + chandeliers, you will be amazed for sure. Now, concerning the food, my plate was delicious, it's portuguese food, so it's very traditional, ceviches, fish, potatoes, lambs, red wine and so on... Very cheap & affordable menu. The waiter was friendly and service was good. People complaining about the food here don't understand the portuguese food at all, it's very rustic & basic, it's not fancy french food, otherwise, go to Paris. I really loved my experience here and I recommend it. *ps: according to Google Maps this restaurant is closed, but it's open !

Yelp
My sister and I wanted a real portuguese experience for our first night and we found this restaurant on Yelp. The restaurant itself is really amazing. The house is a little bit hard to find and from the outside it looks sort of rundown but the ambiance inside is great. There are two different rooms for seating decorated with the typical tiles. But now about the food: we ordered the pork with clams and potatoes (which was obviously one of their favorites because every second table ordered it) and one traditional dish but we don't remember the name. The plates looked good and were decorated but we absolutely didn't like the food. The potatoes were only half cooked and the meat wasn't good either. Maybe we just caught a bad night there.

Yelp
I went to this restaurant with a large group so we had a fixed menu. It started with the prerequisite Portuguese olives and cheese which are always good. It was followed by a vegetable soup, which I enjoyed but others said tasted burnt. Then we had a fish course, which was cod. It was a bit dry but the accompanying potatoes were very good. Next was a lamb and potatoes dish which was excellent. Everyone loved the lamb. Lastly, we had an assortment of desserts and port, a nice way to end the meal. The building had an interesting history making it a unique dining experience in Lisbon. The wait staff was also very friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing building (moorish style). I would suggest it to everyone visiting Lisbon and especially for those interested in cultural/ traditional atmosphere. The building looks like a very old Moorish style with different rooms overlooking a big yard covered in tiles and engraved wood, each room has different style and beautiful ceilings. I tried their dinner and I didn't like it at all, extremely salty, fish was overcooked, salad had no seasoning and the whole menu was not interesting ( fish/ meat with roasted veg). However, maybe it would be a great spot for a drink or afternoon tea or something. It's an incredible spot and not to be missed.
google avatar

Hali M.

Yelp
Our hostel recommended coming here for traditional Portuguese meal, but we were pretty disappointed. It's located in a beautiful space with tiled mosaics covering the walls, but the food was extremely disappointing. I got the pork with mussels and potatoes, and it was too salty and too greasy. The pork was really tough, dry, and stringy. The fries were probably the best part of the meal. Portions are huge, but doesn't make up for the quality of the food. Service though was very patient and let us sit and eat for a long time.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a historic building, where locals barely know what is going on - and that is the funky part of it. At night, a vibrant and young crowd come to savor local favorites. Chourico, tapas... cheeses and wine or beer or drinks. The food is ok, but the vibe is amazing - a wonderful, loud and energetic place to hang before you say adios to Lisbon. It is huge and maze-like with private party rooms, a large sit in restaurant and a couple of small bars. Very cool!
google avatar

Henry D.

Yelp
Great place and great food. We had the pork and clams and it was delicious. 40 euros for starters, main course and desert for two was cheap in regards to the food and service. Our waiter was one of the best!

Laurie R.

Yelp
Best dinner in Liabon. Historical building and the regional cuisine was it if this world. Only restaurant in Lisbon that I would recommend to others or come back to.
google avatar

Marty F.

Yelp
Magnificently decorated restaurant on the upper floor of a community center/social club/taverna with specialities of the Alentejo region. Among these, we had delicious pork and clams dish, a favorite from the region! The tile murals are glorious. Prices quite reasonable for such a beautiful setting. Note: up several flight guts of stairs with? Elevator. Also on touristy restaurant street off ROSSIO!

Denise H.

Yelp
We were tired from our flight and wanted something simple. There is a formal restaurant if you go upstairs, but we stopped in the bar/taverna area. We ate outside and went it to order at the counter (this is faster than waiting for a waiter). Wine inexpensive, gazpacho was delicious - very different from what we had in Spain. Sausage, bread and olives - a great start to our Lisbon adventure. You must walk upstairs to get to this bar and then up another set of stairs to the formal restaurant.

Yelp
How cool that this restaurant is on restaurant row but you almost have to do a double take to find it. It's an old Moorish castle and the interior is an unbelieveable display of tile work, a garden and various paintings on the walls. You climb two flights to get to the main restaurant. The food is simple, traditional Portuguese fare. We started with a melon and ham salad, which was just right. Then the famous peasant soup, acorca (sorry if i didnt use the right spelling), the bread soup in water, olive oil, garlic and herbs. This restaurant added an egg, but it was so hard boiled it was tough. Perhaps a soft boiled egg instead? We followed with the salmon with mashed potatoes and vegetables, and the pork with clams. The salmon was average, but the pork was flavored with typical tasty Portuguese spices. The pork melted in your mouth, and the clams were sweet. Dessert was the platter of assorted cakes, all good. Come here for the ambience, the tradition, and the price is good too.

Jason Z.

Yelp
Food is extremely tasty! I had baked rock fish and patatos. I arrived 9:40ish, even though google map said it closed at 11, I was told the kitchen has closed and they close at 10, so I only had two dishes to choose from, rock fish or pork. A neighboring table decided to eat here another day .... come early of you want more choices.
google avatar

NY B.

Yelp
This was recommended by food walking tour group as a hidden gem. The venue is fabulous being an old palace but the food is horrible. Cod was waaay too salty to be edible. The service was unattentive and did not care at all when told the feedback. Spend your dollar elsewhere. You're better off eating at home.

Siim K.

Yelp
It is a beautiful building, but they serve quite basic food. We had our last night dinner there, and were disappointed.
google avatar

Olga s.

Yelp
This place came highly recommended, however it was such a disappointment. If you like greasy salty food, with rude waiter then come and enjoy. The waiter was rude, did not stop for a second to acknowledge our desire to discuss food and give recommendations on the wine. He did not stop to answer a question on the order. Between the few of us we speak 5 languages, however he refused to try to communicate. Food was very mediocre, really not worth the hype.
google avatar

Elina B.

Yelp
Horrible service! The waiter would not answer a simple question, greasy, salty food...that drowns in oil, touristy trap!!! Stay away! One star for the authentic decor
google avatar

Felipe A.

Yelp
A beautiful and traditional building in the heart of Lisbon. Lots of cultural activities and one big and also traditional restaurant. The atmosphere is nice and the food is pretty good, but it could be better. It is worth the trip for the Portuguese tradition.
google avatar

Val D.

Yelp
After sitting for 30 minutes we didn't any receive service. We most likely arrived prior to closing. The waiter who was smoking on the patio next to us never said a word. Same with the other three waiters.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
Went here based on past reviews and was not disappointed. The location CAN be difficult to find especially if you're drawn to the tons of other restaurants in the area, but found it anyway without too much trouble. Once inside, you have to head up some stairs and follow the signs until you see the tables set up towards the back. The building was cool if you like rustic, but can definitely use a little updating. Even still, the place has some very interesting decor and was a cool place to eat. Was seated and promptly waited on...The service was good and our waiter spoke good English. I had an appetizer- assorted meats, some wine (awesome!) and the pork tenderloin. It was all VERY tasty so we stayed for dessert and had the chocolate mousse, also excellent. Would highly recommend.
google avatar

Carolina V.

Yelp
Service is a bit slow, but the building is awesome. The food isn't anything special unfortunately. Their wine is really good, but you're better off in any other restaurant from the centre.

D L.

Yelp
Severe food poisoning! Chorizo gone bad has caused us our trip! My boyfriend had to sit out on our trip because of what we ate. Our trip has been ruined by this unhygienic and unethical restaurant Deserves ZERO star

Ce E.

Yelp
Was recommended by a foot walking tour and is (at least) a tourist trap. We came for lunch and had just about 50 minutes to spend since we had to catch a plane later. After wie entered, the menus came right away, however until we could place our order 10 minutes were gone. Until the starter arrived another 10 minutes passed, but at least the mushrooms were yummy. The drinks (wine and water) didn't arrive yet. After we finished the starter in about 5 minutes, nothing happened anymore. Another 10 minutes later the wine and the water arrived - however, the glasses were so dirty we didn't wanna use them. As we had just 15 minutes left by then, I pointed out to the waiter we are in a rush. 5 minutes later the main dishes arrived at the table, but they would have better kept them in the kitchen: On one plate the salmon was burned to death (big black crust on the bottom) and dry like the dessert. The spinach was cold. Like not even a little bit warm, more like out of the fridge. The mashed potatoes were without salt, pepper, nothing. And at max medium warm. On the other plate the fish was ok, but the green beans were just medium warm and the most tasteless thing ever eaten. To be honest they weren't eaten. The potatoes were ok though. We then cancelled the desert, at the one hand due to our rush, at the other hand because we lost trust it might become any better. Long story short: tourist trap, very slow waiters, dirty dishes and partially awful food. If that is original Portuguese, then better take one of the pizza places on the main road.
google avatar

Gavriel K.

Yelp
It's not closed, just keep climbing the stairs. Cool ambiance, good service, but slow preparation of the food. Hot vegetable dishes are overcooked. Salads are good. Fish are great: moist and slightly crispy. Well priced. Good location.
google avatar

Carlmeasms M.

Yelp
Great place to eat well and at the best low price with hi quality and superb alentejo dishes

Fish L.

Yelp
We had the most wonderful dinner during the 5 days stay here. Food was excellent and decor totally amazing. The chickpea and cod fish salad was tasty and unique. The dogfish soup and Fried pork with claims were both wonderful. Very reasonable prices and good services.

Emily C.

Yelp
The restaurant itself is really beautiful but has very bright lighting. The portions are huge and good for sharing. All of the food was fresh and simple. Service was attentive but not exactly friendly.

Margaret R.

Yelp
The food is awful. Think Eastern Europe under Communism and you get the picture. The vegetables are terribly overcooked, The dory fish I tried was bland and the pork my husband had was tough. Avoid at all costs. The building is interesting but not a reason to eat here.
