On the Grid : Casa dos Ovos Moles

"These are conventual pastry sweets based on eggs and sugar, created by nuns and monks in the monasteries. In this cute shop just in front of Basílica da Estrela, you can taste delicacies like “ovos moles” (soft eggs) from Aveiro and “pão de ló” (a light sponge cake). These treats taste like a major reward after climbing Calçada da Estrela, from São Bento neighborhood to Campo de Ourique." - Fluor

This is one of the BEST bakeries in Lisbon! We took an amazing pastel de nata baking class with the owner Filipa. She took us through every step of how to make the classes Portuguese tart - and it was the best one we ate all trip :) We absolutely visiting this shop and taking the class!!!

Amazing class with Maria! She walked us through each step to make delicious pastries and definitely had us involved! They were the best pasteries we had in Lisbon and we made them ourselves! She gave us the recipes so we can try them at home! Loved this workshop!

We went today in the morning, and, unfortunately, the waitress (?) was VERY rude. She couldn’t even come to our table to take our order, she was so “busy” that while doing other stuff asked us and walked away while we decided. When our coffee was ready, she didn’t even tell us, she just put it on the counter and when we saw it, we went for it. She was behind the counter on her phone the whole time. While paying, she had the same rude attitude, we were giving here 20 cents to avoid receiving many coins and she was ignoring us, I insisted and then she said “no, it’s not necessary”, she gave us the change (many coins btw). The place was EMPTY except for 4/5 people in a class (?). The coffee was extremely hot. The place is cute, so it’s very unfortunate that the service is one of the worst we had in Lisbon.

My wife and I took the Pastei baking class with Filipa this past week. There were a total of 5 people in the class. It was a fun and tasty experience! Filipa was so helpful, very precise in her procedures and never rudely critical of anyone. We learned the whole process from beginning to eating of how to make a Pastei de Nata pastry. Filipa was very patient with each of us and had us all laughing as we fumbled our way through. We would highly recommend this class!

We did a workshop as a family with the owner Filipa. We learned and baked Natas and learned a lot about regional sweets of Portugal. Everything was just right, perfect, sweet and cozy about the place! Highly recommended.

Maria was an amazing host and teacher! We made some delicious traditional Portuguese pastries! Can't recommend her class strong enough!

The workshop of pasteis de natas is highly recommended specially if you want to get the right texture of the pastry and the custard 🍮. Filipa is such a professional. You'll have a quality time there by experiencing a typical Portuguese activity! 🍰🥧

We tried to buy pastries from this shop today at 13:24 but were told by a woman smoking in front of the shop that it was closed for an hour even though the door was left open. You should change your sign outside the shop and on Google Maps to inform people of that because we walked a long time to your shop and were very disappointed to find it closed.

Yelp
This place has some really good ovos moles; egg yolk and sugar inside a thin wafer in the shape of seashells. They also have other egg yolk based pastries that are worth having. The space is small and has about 2 or 3 tables. It's in the Chiado area and on a side road next to Carmo convent (museu arqueológico do Carmo).

Yelp
Wow, wow, and again. They specialize in pastries which are made with sugar and eggs from different regions of Portugal. In particular, you must try the "Ovos Moles de Aveiro." They come this particular district and the casing is rice paper, like a communion wafer, but in a variety of different shapes--such as sea shells, barrels, and fish. Very smooth texture. A local confectionary delicacy not to be missed, if you can't visit this region!
