How Hostels Became Poshtels: The Remaking of a Backpacker's Hangout

"The do-anything-for-a-dollar diva parodies her own luxe-obsessed reputation as she sashays around a hostel—in real life, the Casa Gracia in Barcelona."

Location-it is located in a quiet and safe neighbourhood near lots of high end shops and close to Casa Batlló. The apartment was good for what we needed to use it for. A base to retire to after sightseeing. Despite there being many large groups using the hostel/hotel adjacent to the apartments we never heard any noises. It is close to many restaurants. We had great meals at 3 local places. (Margharita's, Piko Taco, Encercle) There are many coffee shops close by too. |Cleanliness- It was clean, the bathroom was modern although the shower basin could fill quickly with water. |Comfort - the bed was comfortable but the apartment only had enough plates/bowls for 3. We were a party of 4. This was slightly annoying. |Check-in - it was slow and at 3pm, when check-in opens it may have made sense to have had more than 1 person checking everyone in. (Hostel, hotel and aparthotel all check-in at the same desk) We appreciated being able to leave our luggage before the 3pm check-in time.

Though we selected a private room, this was one of the nicest hostels we’ve stayed in with lots of charm! Not to mention the location was prime! The elevators were quirky but fun, and all the staff was incredibly helpful. Specifically want to call out Ivonne and Alfredo who made our stay extra sweet! Can’t wait to come back and stay again!

Location is the only advantage. They worked hard on this rating. We checked in, went to our room and it appeared that we have 2 separate beds while we booked double bed. Came back to the reception, they changed it to a different room but in the new one AC and shower were not working. Came back to the reception, lady rolled her eyes and said that technician will come later. 1h later when we passed by the reception we asked again and they said that technician left so he will come tomorrow (35 degrees outside). Finally we slept on 2 separate beds. Room is totally dark, all windows are closed because the view outside is terrible. When leaving we could not leave our luggages because storage was full. Apart from location which is great I struggle to find any pros. For this price you can definitely find something better.

The apartments are spacious, comfortable, and offer truly spectacular views. Without a doubt, the highlight of the experience was the service: the hotel is run by a young, cheerful team who are always ready to help. Their kind attitude and warm smiles make you feel welcome from the very first moment. I will definitely comeback!!! Thanks to all the team especially to Daha!!

The photos online looked much better than the real place. We booked a room that was supposed to be like a hotel room for three nights, but it was not what we expected. The first room we got had a terrible smell, like strong chemicals and dirty mops. We couldn’t stay there, so we asked to change rooms. The second room didn’t smell bad, was very basic and didn’t look like the pictures. The bathroom was a problem too. The shower didn’t have any glass doors—it looked like they were broken and never replaced. So when you take a shower, water goes all over the bathroom floor. Also, the room doors were very thin. We could hear everything happening in the hallway—people walking, rolling their luggage, and slamming doors. If you’re a light sleeper, you’ll need earplugs. If you’re looking for a hotel-style room, this is not the right place. The only good thing was the great location, but overall it would have been better to spend €50–100 more for a real hotel.

I loved the location and vibe of the area. It is located right in the heart of the shopping district with a lot of good shopping brands and food places. We loved taking a walk at night and exploring food places and old buildings with beautiful architecture. Initially, I had booked a room with a balcony and view. I found the room to be noisy as it was situated by the street. Also that room had only one charging point. We requested the lady at the reception to change our room and she was able to do so, although I had paid a little bit extra for the room with a balcony but sleep was more important. The other room was peaceful. The Staffs are very helpful. The breakfast is good too. Ivonne was very helpful and she was also kind enough to allow me late check-out because I had a late afternoon flight. Overall a very good experience. I wish they had a chair and a table in the rooms.

Location is good as it's not too far from metro stop. The room itself was big enough (for 6 people with private bathroom). Room was very hot tho. We could hear noise from the corridor. There is an elevator but you need to climb few stairs first to get to it.

We loved this hotel for a couple! The balcony views are incredible and owing to the nature of traffic you can leave the windows open and still snooze peacefully on a spring day. The staff was great, too. Alia and Claudia really went above and beyond when we stayed. The historical details of the building really added to the romance of Barcelona for me personally. And the location is simply unbeatable.

Yelp
Ive never felt like I was in a tourist trap until today. The atmosphere was trendy with neon lights, had many photo opportunity spots. You get a business card that entitles you to one free wine/beer/coffee with your order. The food menu was for sure overpriced, but I gave it a chance. Got the steak tartare which was adequate but did not taste much of anything other than egg yolk and salt. It said the item came with fries so for 17 euros I actually expected a real portion of fries since potatoes are cheap. The dish was mostly meat to my surprise with a side of potato sticks and 2 crackers. Not sure what to do with the sticks since you cant use it to scoop or pair with the beef tartare anyways. Overall was disappointing to say the least. Will not come back but many people will wander off to the streets as it is on a main street i am sure.

Yelp
Overall, we absolutely loved this hotel and would come back again next time we are in the area. Great location, friendly staff both at the bar and checkin, affordable breakfast spread that offers a variety of options each morning, clean rooms with very very comfortable beds, soft oversized towels and cleaning service each day (if desired). This place is more like an upscale chic hostel - with shared common bedrooms, public kitchen (with all amenities), shared lounge spaces as well as private beds/baths. Very trendy decor and easy access to and from the street to the hotel rooms. The only drawback is that some of the private baths may be a bit tight and small (not too uncommon among many places however) but still very clean and functional!

Yelp
All in all, not a bad place to stay at a decent price. Traditional hostel rooms as well as private rooms available. We had a private room with a "double bed." Double bed meaning two twins pushed together with a mattress topper connecting them...which meant waking up each night having fallen in the crack between the two beds inevitably separating. Less than ideal. Our room was teeny tiny with limited natural light and no frills (few outlets, no TV, no furniture, etc.), but it was kept very cool, clean, and the bathroom was nice. The breakfast spread is probably worth the price to get yourself ready to start a long day of exploring. Not a great breakfast by any means, but enough variety for a decent price to fill you up quickly. The place itself is very cute and charming. Love the decor, plants, and different hang out spaces. Customer service was also great and they stored our luggage all day after checkout while we waited for an evening train. By the end of the trip, I felt we did not have a great value for what we paid as it was the most expensive accommodation and my least favorite of the 4 places we stayed, but it was in a pretty convenient area for public transit and was relatively quiet.

Yelp
I had a great stay here last year! This is a super late review, but better late than never! I was greeted warmly upon check-in, and received great service throughout my stay. The building itself is older, but very charming, and is styled in both modern and old-school. This building is pretty huge as well, with many floors and rooms. I paid a little extra and got my own room during my stay, and I found it to be quite a lovely and comfortable room. This is a hostel, so I did find one of the rooms across the hallway to be super noisy, but they did eventually tone it down during a respectable hour. My only complaint with the room, although I can't really blame this on the place, is that there was a power outage one evening, so we were without AC for a night during the hot Barcelona summer, and that got to be pretty uncomfortable. Aside from that, I really don't have any complaints. As far as food goes, I didn't dine at the restaurant, but the daily breakfast was good. And as far as the neighborhood goes, Gràcia has tons of dining, shopping, and sites nearby, so you definitely won't get bored!

Yelp
Casa Gracia is a beautiful hostel in an excellent location. The breakfast is tasty, though the same everyday and the kitchen is nice when you need to save money on eating out. The building, decorations and design is gorgeous and trendy. Beds are comfy and daily towel and sheet service is a plus. Bathrooms are very clean. Staff is friendly enough. The main drawbacks are the fact that the WiFi moves terribly slow so bring a hotspot, and the laundry costs €5.50. The big rooms do not have a mirror outside the bathroom so getting ready was a challenge with a 6 person room, and there is no iron. I would stay here again, just better prepared.

Yelp
It's hard to recommend this place. Yes it has charm, it's in a decent location, the food is okay at the restaurant. But it seems very disorganized. The staff is friendly but not well trained. Simple tasks like luggage storage can take 30 minutes or more and requires talking to multiple employees. One employee tells you to wait in the chill room. But it's locked and another employee tells you you can't. Is your room ready? One employee tells you it is and to pick up your key at the other desk. The staff at that desk gives you a strange look because your room is not ready and you're not supposed to pick up your key here. All this can get pretty frustrating when the AC in the lobby barely works and it's a hot Barcelona summer day. Need some extra towels? They'll be right up. Thirty minutes later, go downstairs, ask again, different employee, shift change, they need to talk to another employee to get towels. Come'on it's just towels! Want to sit at the bar and have a cup of coffee? Be prepared to get a pushy bar tender trying to sell you food and drinks several times after you told him you only want coffee. To top it off, the WiFi is very slow and unreliable. Enough said. There are better places in Barcelona.

Yelp
I was looking forward to staying here but due to travel restrictions my country cannot travel to Spain and won't be for some time. This hotel will not offer a refund. They did offer a future credit but it expires in 2020. Unfortunately I don't anticipate the travel ban to be lifted nor do I see it safe to travel in December. I was looking to rebook in March with is within one year of my original booking. They denied the request and I have since requested to speak to a manager. Hotels should understand that the experience they deliver now will effect future bookings and recommendations. All of my other hotels from this trip have been refunded and this is the only hotel that I have had a negative experience with. I do not recommend making a booking here.

Yelp
I gave this place one star because of the location. Other than that it's way overpriced, no breakfast included, and on top of that we found a mouse in our room. I wanted to extended my checkout time and I had to go through many steps to do so and even though I extended my checkout three people Came to knock on my door early in the morning to communicate with me I had to check out on time. So frustrating. Perhaps better communication between staff members would help?

Yelp
Had the best time here! The hostel was organized, clean, and the staff was very friendly. We arrived early and they allowed us to place our luggage in a locked room until our room was ready so that we could go explore the city! Breakfast is amazing with many options and there is coffee available for any time of day. The hostel is in a great location with access to food, shopping, and museums. The only reason I'm not giving it five stars is because the WiFi was spotty from our 4th floor room. It would go in and out, wouldn't stay connected, and it made it very difficult to use. Overall, however, I would 100% book a stay in this hostel again.

Yelp
Review on the restaurant only: This place was selected by my vegetarian friends because they have a lot of options for the non meat eaters. Everything veg-friendly is indicated. What's funny is that the Patatas Bravas - which is normally a vegetarian dish - had meat in the sauce (which wasn't spicy at all). So beware if you're choosing that dish and thinking it's safe for vegetarians... The menu had a nice variety with seasonal flavors and inventive flavor combinations. I'd have loved to try some other dishes, but due to food allergies, I couldn't have them. What I did have was the carrot hummus - which was surprisingly delicious... And for my main plate, I had the grilled vegetables - which I absolutely loved. I usually don't opt for grilled vegetables here in Barcelona, because I've found most places don't do vegetables justice, or use the same boring vegetables that you find everywhere else... Not here! All the vegetables were cooked to the right tenderness - yet still had crunch. The desserts were all good - I had the textured orange with coconut tapioca and sorbet. I also tried the chocolate cake thing and the lemon meringue tart - all were good - but I liked mine the best. Sorry - no pictures. Prices were fair, and the service was friendly and accommodating. I wanted to go down to the basement bar - but, well, I had work the next morning. Perhaps next time.

Yelp
Restaurant review: actually BAR in the restaurant. The place gets pretty busy. Do yourself a favor sit at the bar and ask for Sebastian. Awesome guy, great bartender in every facet of the job. Speaks English if that helps, it does me. By the way, drinks are good, I have eaten muscles and patatas bravas both were terrific.

Yelp
This place is amazing. I loved staying at this hostel. The rooms are beautiful and the area is super nice. It was easy to get to public transporation from Casa Gracia. And, all the employees who worked here were super nice. They also had a ton of cool things going on at every night like Flamenco night where they served dinner, and had a flamenco show. Or Tapas night where they had Spanish musicians come in and perform. They only charged a few euros for the food. They also served complimentary breakfast every morning, and that was not bad either. The room we were in was very white, bright, and open. Super clean. The sheets were nice and white. The blankets were fluffy. And there was nice AC in our room. It was very beautifully decorated. This place is very big. There were about five or six floors for this hostel. There were public bathroom on the third floor and on the first floor in addition to the one we had in our room. There were a few cute lounge areas near the reception and even someone there who will help you find things to do in Barcelona. Also, the hotel offers free WiFi but it was spotty in some areas. For us, it only worked in the hallway. There weren't any places to wash your clothes, but there is a tiny laundry store about five minutes from Casa Gracia. There is a kitchen here so you can cook if you're trying to save money. And, they have free coffee all day. There's a super fancy machine here that does all kinds of things. I would not hesitate to recommend Casa Gracia in the future. Will upload piccs when I have time :)

Yelp
We stayed here as our first stop during our 2 week honeymoon and loved it! The staff were very friendly and helpful! The location was perfect and very close to metro. The room was decent and even came with fun bathrobes! Having access to a kitchen, free coffee machine, and laundry was super convenient! Downers...it could get a bit noisy in the evenings and even in the middle of the night, our room came with two single beds pushed together to make it a double and they kept sliding apart while we slept. All in all, a great stay and budget friendly option!

Yelp
This is by-far the best hostel that I've ever staid in. Booked this a few days in advance when my friend and I decided to go to Barcelona. All of the other hostels sounded either inconveniently located or just plain disgustig. While Casa Gracia is somewhere between a hostel and a hotel, it was defintely worth the extra money. Located right near the subway, you have easy access to many great neighborhoods either on foot or via subway. About 25-minute to the famous las Ramplas, or just two or three stops on the subway. Even better, my friend and I found a bus that went directly to the part of Barcelona with nice beaches. Was an amazing find! Every morning, there was a breakfast surveyed until maybe 9:30 and 10. Was enough to charge up for the morning. However, if you were out partying the night before, don't expect to make it down for breakfast in time. Casa Gracia had a charming balcony/elevated courtyard upon which you could sit and eat breakfast or enjoy the sunset. The hostel also partnered with several tour groups, so they could set you up with a walking tour or bike tour if you so desired. Would highly recommend, and would stay again if I get to go back to Barcelona

Yelp
Excellent location, friendly staff & a gorgeous building; plus, the meals are good. I stayed in this hostel & highly recommend it. It is convenient to the Metro in a nice neighborhood. The rooms are clean & spacious. The staff is very helpful in making recommendations of what to see & how to get there. One night we saw a flamenco performance & had paella at Casae Gracia. It was a great night of entertainment & we met very cool fellow travelers. The tomatoes, olive oil & salt on toast for breakfast is a wonderful way to start the day!

Yelp
I stayed here in a group of five and we had our own room and beds (no bunk beds). The hostel is located in a great neighborhood with easy access to the tube. The owner, Israel, is very friendly and always willing to help out. The rooms of the hostel are small, but, especially for Spain, the standard is great. The kitchen is big, the bathrooms are nice, the rooms have A/C, they offer free internet, have events planned incl. sangria and paella nights, and they have a terrace! The price is also very reasonable and the atmosphere of the hostel is great and cosy. It doesn't feel run-down, dirty or old like other hostels in Barcelona. We also had problems with our reservation as one person canceled last minute and the staff was very accommodating and let you change the reservation without a fee one week prior even though it was in september and high season. I would definitely be staying here again and also recommend casa gracia.

Kathryn W.

Yelp
Charming rooms, great parties, fantastic location, and helpful staff. I can't thank the front desk clerk enough for encouraging me to lock up my passport upon arrival. When I was on the beach I had some stuff stolen from my purse and thanks to la casa Gracia staff my passport wasn't among those items. The free blow dryers are very helpful for an American like me whose blow dryer won't work in the European outlets. They offered free sangria and took me out to fun bars in a big group. I love the way the rooms are decorated Highly recommend.

Lucia B.

Yelp
The hostel feels like a hotel! And the food is very nice! specially the bar downstains, the barmans have a lot of style

Yelp
Great value in a wonderful neighborhood. We did have problems with our air con (in the middle of the big heatwave). The first night they gave us a suite to accommodate the issue but they didn't take care of it the next day. We waited around until 4-5 and they found a room for us to move into after that - it just wasn't done, in our opinion, in a timely matter. Bedding wasn't fantastic but it serves it's purpose. Staff is hit or miss - some very friendly, others didn't really care. I would recommend this to young people traveling with a bigger budget than your average hostel - it would be great for a girls trip or something similar, the details were all very cute and Pinterest worthy.

Yelp
This place was awesome. It's more a hotel/apartments than a hostel. Great location and great service. The new restaurant and the groovu cocktail bar in the basement are fabulous and good value

Yelp
We started our trip in Barcelona at a 5-star hotel and when they couldn't extend our stay, we relocated to Casa Gràcia. We actually enjoyed our time at Casa much more and wished we'd stayed there the entire time. Wonderfully helpful staff, great atmosphere, comfortable and charming lobby with free coffee--simply the coolest hostel I've ever stayed at.
