7 Must-Try Sandwiches for Your Next Trip to Portugal

"A Porto spot credited as the origin of the sandes de pernil: slow-roasted, shredded pork shoulder piled high with cheese inside a flavorful roll; its multiple locations make it easy to sample this emblematic northern pork sandwich without a long wait." - Stacey Leasca

Local place with local tastes. I tried few dishes for the first time, that is why ı have no chance to compare: Francesinha traditional is good, the souse was a bit like tomato soup. Coxinha Frango is good, it was chicken and cheese, nice to start with a basic one if you will try first time. We also tried basic tastes: Papas Bravas was very nice, especially the spicy souse was very delicious. Pimentos Padron was so fresh. Polvo was not so good, it was a bit cold. Picanha Brasil was so-so, it was a bit dry, not so juicy. The place was fully booked, but we waited only 5 minutes, and they arranged the table for us very quickly. If you want to try traditional dishes in Porto, here is very nice restaurant..

We had a great time here! Came on a Saturday night and it was quite busy still at 8ish. We were served by Jack who was fast, efficient and friendly. The food portion and taste was fantastic, great value for the price. We ordered the pork leg and the Portuguese style cod fish. The pork leg was especially yummy and the meat was fall off the bone.

Quite disappointing. The steak was cold, the burger was plain, the fish was too salty and I asked them 3 times to bring our fries and some lemon. The restaurant looks nice, but it doesn't matter when you are hungry and the food is below any expectations. I would never recommend anyone to choose this place and I won't return. Unfortunately, the food only looks nice.

This was a fantastic stop to try all the Porto specialities. Recommended by a local friend and it didn’t disappoint. We had the Francesinha, #15, and the Simples hot dog and it was all amazing. We certainly will be trying more Porto hot dogs though. Our entire family devoured it! Jack’s service was exemplary and the whole vibe was chill and friendly with kids. (No picture of the hotdog because it was gone too fast!)

Casa Guedes absolutely lived up to the hype — one of those Porto spots where you take one bite and immediately get why people keep recommending it. We came hungry and left very happy. The star for me was the pork (pernil) sandwich: insanely tender, juicy meat with that slow-roasted flavour, and the cheese melting into everything so perfectly that every bite felt rich but still balanced. Simple idea, executed at a level that’s honestly hard to beat. We also tried the francesinha and it was a full-on comfort-food masterpiece — gooey cheese blanket, a perfect runny egg on top, and that warm, savoury sauce that you just want to scoop up until the plate is spotless. Add the crispy fries on the side and it’s game over. Even the snacks were great — the croquettes/rissois-style bites were crunchy outside, soft and flavourful inside, and disappeared way too fast. On top of the food, the place has a fun, lively vibe and the service was quick and efficient (especially impressive when it’s busy). If you’re in Porto and want something iconic, satisfying, and genuinely delicious: Casa Guedes is a must.

I had the shrimp risotto and the soup sandwitch with ham, sausage and steak, native of Porto. The shrimp risotto was quite good with a good amount of shrimp. The soup sandwitch was perhaps an acquired taste, a bit on the saltier side and with sour dough bread that was soaked with soup -- probably a feature. Had a soup with potato and kale which was a good filler before the main course. The restaurant was very busy at around 1pm on a sunday, and service was understandably slower. Interior is functional and a bit on the older side.

A really lovely restaurant with kind and attentive staff. The local dishes were delicious, and our waiter, Matheus, was exceptionally helpful. He spoke excellent English and provided clear information about allergens, making our experience even better. The place was a bit crowded, and we had to wait a few minutes to get in, but it was absolutely worth it.

We went to Casa Guedes Rooftop for dinner and really enjoyed the vibes. The food was great, and the pork cracklings are a must-try. We also tried the famous Francesinha for the first time. Can’t say how it compares to other places, but I realised it’s not really my kind of dish. Still glad I gave it a try. Everything else was delicious. Service was fast and friendly. Definitely a spot worth checking out!
