Google
I’ve eaten here several times and it never disappoints. The roasted pork sandwiches, cod cakes, and croquettes are always tasty—especially when washed down with a cold Super Bock. Sitting outside is perfect for people watching. Life is good!

Google
We serendipitously had lunch here. This is one of the finest restaurants in Porto. The personnel were amicable and well-informed. They patiently elucidated the diverse dishes. The cuisine was undoubtedly superb and delectable. You should sample the abade prisco at least once to explore the flavors of Portugal.

Maggie

Google
Updated review after went back for dinner-had the traditional dish and fries and neither was that good especially the fries which was probably the worst I had ever 🤪. Stick with their specialty- Excellent traditional Portugal food especially the pork sandwich!🤤busy and managed well and didn’t even have to wait more than a few minutes. Very friendly service. Several levels -ground floor with a bar area and main dining on 1st floor and I heard there is a rooftop too but didn’t go as it was raining

It was our last night in Portugal and I really wanted a delicious traditional meal. We wandered around for quite some time and stumbled on Casa Guedes. We were greeted at the door and asked for a seat on the rooftop. When we reached the rooftop we greeted the server using Portuguese, instead of English, and she smiled broadly and gave my wife a huge hug and thanked us for using her language. This ladies name was Alexandra and she is, without a doubt, the absolute best server I have ever had. She helped us pick the perfect wine, made fantastic recommendations for what to choose for dinner and dessert and made sure that we never needed anything. The food was absolutely outstanding and Alexandra's kindness and outgoing personality were infectious! We soon found ourselves chatting with people at all of the tables around us and sharing experiences about our time in Portugal. This was all because of Alexandra. If you are in Porto and want a great meal and phenomenal service go to Casa Guedes and ask for Alexandra!

Google
Food was okay, Pork knuckle was really tasty, falling out of bone, do delicious, however side dish that you get with it was also good but portion is very small and not in proportion with the meat where you get really good amount of it. Other dish however, was nothing special, bacalar with egg and vegetables. It had some tomato taste which is fine but overall lacking some spices or something. Position of restaurant is nice, on the street.

Google
I genuinely don’t get the hype of this place — the food was super cold, flavourless and the price per quality is off (9,90€ for a prego with Brie and 5,90€ for a small glass of wine is exorbitant). They get an extra star for the super nice staff and incredible roof top terrace, but overall not worth it!

Google
We had bifana with fries. I added peri-peri sauce. It was amazing. We had bifana a second day and a cachorrinho. I think their cachorrinho is better than Gazela's! There is another place with a similar name very close to it. Please make sure you go to "Tradicional".

Google
Their traditional sandwiches with sheep cheese are totally worth it! Paired them with the black beer. The service is great as well and you have your order quickly.

Yelp
We sat at the counter in front of where the magic happens! Best seats in the house. If you are in the mood for a delicious and juicy roasted pork and cheese sandwich, go here! Open bread Stack pork slices Add a couple slices cheese Spoon some cooked pork au jus on the bun Close, serve Simply satisfying.

Yelp
Visited 6/11/24. Yum! Highly highly recommend Casa Guedes-one of my favorite restaurants we ate at in Portugal. Even more fun is the rooftop seating where they have fun music and rotating tapas. I got the pernil sandwich with sheep's cheese and wow did it hit the spot. I loved it and would order again in a heartbeat. My sister got the mushroom risotto which we also loved. We split the homemade chips as well and these were so good. Super fun and delicious spot.

Yelp
Definitely recommend the green soup. The typical Portuguese sandwich was OK but, not the best we've had. Service was good.

Yelp
Wonderful restaurant had dinner here one night and really enjoyed the food. The company and the service. A free Wi-Fi is also a plus. I ordered a pasta with tomato sauce and basil. I was really craving pasta at the time and it was very filling. It was cooked well and the pasta was chewy. Also got a glass of white wine, which was crisp and refreshing. What is there a table of shirt, a Keylime pie and a chocolate cheesecake, both of which were delicious and filling. The service was fantastic here. Our server was very attentive and always made sure our waters were refilled. The food came out really fast as well as hot and fresh. Bathrooms are also very clean.

Yelp
I would legitimately eat here everyday. The Picanha a Brasileira is very delicious and for 23 euros it's hard to beat. The meat is tender and full of flavor, accompanied by the farofa and rice it makes a dish spectacular! That reminds me we need more dishes with farofa back in the states! Overall the place stays busy but not overly busy I was able to grab a table fairly quickly when walking in. If you're in Porto I definitely recommend you stopping by!

Yelp
According to our waitress, the most popular sandwiches are 8, 14, 15. We decided to go with 8 & 14. #8 Pernil com Queijo de Ovelha - great if you're looking for a meat & potatoes type of sandwich. #14 Chef Guedes - similar to #8 bc of the roasted pork, except w Brie cheese, arugula, and caramelized onions in port wine. Both sandwiches are really good. However, IMO, #14 is definitely the better sandwich. The additional ingredients add depth and complexity to the tender, juicy pork + soft bun that simply melts in your mouth.
google avatar

Yelp
Not sure if the food here differs from the one at the corner, but we tried this for lunch one day and was underwhelmed. The pork in our sandwich was a bit dry and also had that meat taste to it. Wasn't as tender/exciting as the ratings conveyed or what we expected. Maybe we went on a bad day..
google avatar

Yelp
Great service and Portuguese food! Went for drinks and dinner on the rooftop--had a francesinha headed
google avatar

Jasmine L.

Yelp
Dined here twice and really enjoyed the food. However, our waitress tried to over charged by over 50 euros. Instead of charging us for 2 glasses of port wine, she charged us for 2 bottles... it seemed like it was on purpose too unfortunately Other than that, the place is clean and spacious with outdoor, rooftop, and indoor seating. The salmon plate was good, as was the green soup!
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
We bought two of the pork sandwiches, the original with sheep's cheese (very strong tasting) and the other with half the sheep's cheese and caramelized onions. The latter was my favorite as it had a sweeter taste. The French fries were cooked nice and crispy but were served cold. For drinks we ordered wine and soda. Restrooms downstairs with a washing station.

Yelp
I'm a New Yorker and we eat food from all over the world, but when you eat food in Porto, Portugal it's a whole different experience. The place is in the middle of the old city. The service is excellent. The people are friendly and they actually serve your meal with a smile. Here you can enjoy food in a relaxed environment. You must try the traditional Portuguese sandwich.

Seth B.

Yelp
We were promptly seated in the rooftop which is what we asked for. Service was nice. We only wanted to have a few beers and split the roasted pork and sheep cheese sandwich. The sandwich wasn't for us. Sheep cheese was great we just didn't love the taste of the roasted pork. Place is really cool and you should try something there. We just didn't love what we ordered. Prices were fair.

Yelp
The home of the best Franchasia sandwich on the planet!! Here it is. You've had the rest, now here's the best. We ordered two and each couple split them as they are MASSIVE, warm with egg, pork, cheese all oozy goodness. The service was excellent. The atmosphere was pure Lisbon. WARNING, there are two locations within 50 feet of each other. One has great seating on an elevated patio. The other does not. Try the lime pie. Not Key Lime, but damn good!!

Yelp
During a visit to Porto in November I kinda googled for some "must-trys" and this place was mentioned several times. There was no wait when we went, possibly due to the off season (Oct-Nov). Lower level was empty because everyone was on the rooftop. I could tell they probably get super busy during high season because the workers had earpieces to communicate~ Anyway, made it to the rooftop. View was nice. Got seated on a barstool with a wobbly table in between some other parties. Staff were reasonably friendly~and fast. We ordered the francesinha and a lemonade to share. The lemonade is exactly that. Lemon juice + water so if you're used to the sweet ones, be warned. The francesinha is basically layers of bread with meat drenched in this sweetish spicy sauce. It reminded me of an egg benedict for some reason~its apparently a famous Portuguese sandwich~just didn't float my boat~a bit too "bready" and hearty for me. Its great to share. Overall it was a meh for me. Good for groups and I believe they have alcohol too.

Yelp
Awesome! We were on the rooftop, and some very delicious francesinha, great drinks, friendly server, all we could ask for.

Yelp
Great rooftop garden seating. Lots of fresh croquettes available upon seating. Known for their sandwiches and fries, u can also enjoy their other offerings!!! Yummy!!

Yelp
Casa Guedes features a modern dining room and an extensive menu of Portuguese dishes. Their specialty was the Pernil sandwich, made with sliced roast pork (the whole roast is displayed at the counter!) and melted soft sheep's cheese. The sandwich had just the right combination of juicy pork and unctuous cheese in a crusty bread roll. Next, the Lascas de Bacalhau a Portuguesa was a baked casserole of cod fish pieces, red/green bell peppers, onions, olives, and potatoes, all in a light tomato sauce, topped with broccoli and a hard-boiled egg--a simple but tasty local dish!

Yelp
Best eats of the trip and great rooftop. Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5 Cost to worth it rating: 4 Opentableable: no reservations Return worthiness: yes! Eve award: best pork and cheese sandwich Highlights: - Pork and cheese sandwich: I am still dreaming of this sandwich. Fluffy fresh small circular roll filled with thin slices of tender pork, covered in this soft gooey cheese, and topped with some port wine onions. Heavenly. Best thing I ate all weekend in Porto. 5+ stars!!! - Rooftop: loved the fun vibe. Was fully covered so not too sunny, had a view of the square, and TV playing music. - Drinks: tall icey ones like sangrias and gin and tonics. So refreshing on a warm day. I could've stayed for hours if we didn't have other sights to see. - Service: we didn't have to wait long to order. For others who came later, they came around with appetizers to purchase while you wait which I thought was cool. - Open on Sundays: lots of restaurants in town are not, so glad we had this option. Lowlights: - No reservations so need to come early. We stood there right at opening at noon on Sunday and within a half hour the rooftop was full. Thought this might be a touristy spot with just OK food, but it was stellar. Would definitely come back here.

Yelp
My wife and I were on the lookout for Bifana, and of course this place is going to show up in any of the ratings and rankings you look up for Bifana in Porto. To be honest it was the pictures that sold me. Since the pork for Bifana is actually usually done in a pan, as pieces of pork and here I think they do it differently. At least in the 4 Bifanas I had in Portugal for my 2024, this one was the most unique and it seemed like it was prepared differently. A bit more roasted and not as much fat it seemed. The pork was EXCELLENT. We took a patio table as this restaurant has about 200+ tables, it spans may floors inside and they have a very big patio out on the square. If the weather is great, do the patio. We had amazing weather. The service outside is great. Our service was prompt and excellent. Yes they try to upsell you bottled water here, and the waiters are trained to try and sell you more, but I am not going to ding them a star for that. Overall the service was prompt, professional, and there were always servers available to help you out. VERY professional indeed. The food here was amazing and fresh, we had a salad, a plate of fries, and two different types of Bifana. I had the one with sheep's cheese and port infused grilled onions. The bread was a wheat bun, and the sandwich simply tasted divine. We also split a bottle of Vino Verdhe, that was a bit on the drier side of most Vinha Verde's and it cut through the fats and improved the hot day by a country mile. Outstanding!

Yelp
We dined on the rooftop. The atmosphere was lively to say the least. We were seated next to a big group. Even the background disco music was overshadowed by their frequent loud conversations, cheers and laughter. Normally we would have preferred a quiet dinner, but we didn't mind for a Friday night outing. It's a Portuguese restaurant that serves tapas. The service was pleasant and attentive. The prices were reasonable, and the food was excellent! Tapas are bigger here than in the States. They could easily be the main entrees. We ordered: 4*Bolinho Bacalhau:it's like fish samosa, made from a mixture of potatoes, bacalhau (codfish), eggs, parsley, onion. It was fried golden brown and tasted crispy and delicious. 4.5*Torre de Gambas ao Alho - Shrimp Tower with Garlic: prawns with garlic sauce, the sauce was tasty but a bit greasy. It was served with toasted bread and they were delicious when dipped into the sauce. 5*Pernil Aperitivo no Pão Sêmea - Roasted Pork Appetizer on Bread: it's a signature dish, the taste was a mixture of sweet onion, tender roasted pork and cheese. It was unique and delicious! 5*Torresmo Panceta - Pork Cracklings: crispy pork tasted great with lemon juice on top. 3*Mista salad: per normal.

Yelp
Stopped in for a semi late lunch on a Monday at around 2 pm. Maybe that's the normal lunch hour around here because there were a good amount of people still dining/coming in around that time. I randomly found this spot because I saw it on Google Maps and it was right by the hotel we were staying at. It had great reviews so we decided to come check it out. We sat at the rooftop, which is kind of enclosed but luckily it wasn't too cold anyway. It had a nice chill vibe. For drinks, I had the green wine. I wasn't really sure what that was but decided to try it. It's kind of like a white wine, which I don't even normally like. But this green wine was very good. It was light, crisp, and refreshing. Hubby had come kind of spicy chili cocktail, which was interesting because it had a kick to it. He enjoyed it. Their most popular sandwich seems to be the pernil with sheep's head cheese and I can see why. The 4 stars here are really just for this sandwich and the drinks. The pork is tender and the cheese is perfectly melty. It's also the perfect sized sandwich if you're not that hungry and don't want something massive, but want more than just a little snack. You definitely need to eat this fresh while you're there though. We got one to go on a separate day to bring back to the hotel and the meat was a little dried out, and the bread was soggy. The cheese was still good though. Hubby had the Guedes Francesinha (house bread, roasted pork, egg, mortadella, chorizo, fresh sausage, ham, gouda cheese, and special sauce). This was our first time trying a francesinha. Looking at photos online, we already knew it would be too heavy, and it was. I also don't like my sandwiches covered in sauce because I hate soggy bread. But still, we wanted to try one since we were just visiting Portugal. This came with a pretty big plate of fries. We almost ordered a side of aioli to go with the fries but our waiter suggested against it because the francesinha already comes with a bunch of sauce and it would be too heavy. Glad we listened to him. The fries were kind of soggy, matching the theme of the heavy sandwich. Overall, I would say stick to the simple dishes (like the roasted pork and sheep's cheese) and maybe a few tapas and drinks and you'll have a great experience.

Yelp
Visiting Porto for 2 days and stopped in for a quick bite and ordered the Guedes Chef Special with an egg on top. It was excellent and already planning on going back tomorrow for lunch.
google avatar

Sara H.

Yelp
Busy square but decent prices. The sandwich was good and filling- glad I tried the local specialty of pork sandwich.
google avatar

Claire G.

Yelp
Although it may be a carnivores delight, it was equally delightful for my vegetarian friend and I (plant based). My friend will still not stopping talking about the mushroom risotto!
google avatar

Terra S.

Yelp
This place looked really cool, so we thought that we would try it out. We sat on the rooftop, which was fun, but it would've been better being on the edge for a better view. Regardless, the service was really slow and just OK. I was not a fan of the food. we had a couple of the sandwiches and some croquettes. They were just ok...
google avatar

Emi B.

Yelp
Seems like a Porto must eat! Chef Guedes (14) - very good, caramelized onion has wine flavor. Pork & Soft Sheep Cheese Sandwich (8) - even better. The sheep cheese isn't too sheep so it was good for me. Love the 2 ways of pork cooking in the sandwich, very flavorful (the shredded part almost tasted like Asian pork floss) Calde Verde - interesting potato soft that's lightly foam texture, with cabbage and shredded kale.

Coutinho N.

Yelp
The passion fruit sangria is amazing! The food is just - ok- but service was fast and friendly.
google avatar

Billy T.

Yelp
I came here wanting to try the Sandes Pernil and had high expectations. They were definitely met. As an appetizer, I got the kale soup which was bussin. As for the sandwich itself, it was phenomenal - the meat was tender, seasoned well, and delicious; the bun was tasty and definitely very fresh. Phenomenal experience and definitely lives up to the hype. Come here!!

Yelp
This is a very popular casual eats spot in Porto. We stopped here for a late lunch, as I had seen videos of their roast pork sandwiches on TikTok. It's immediately apparent from their menu that roast pork is the thing to get here, as it features in most of their offerings. We started with a bolinho de bacalhau, which was offered to us a by a waiter carrying a plate of fried apps. It was room temp instead of hot, but the bolinho itself was very good and stuffed with a funky cheese, which I appreciated. We then got a couple of sandwiches and a small order of fries. The sandwiches themselves were good, but not great. My Chef Guedes sandwich, which included roast pork, brie, port wine caramelized onions, and arugula, was tasty but not as flavorful as I thought it'd be. My husband got a sandwich with roast pork and Portuguese cured ham. He liked it overall, but he was surprised to find that it came with nothing else inside, just meat and bread. They were nice sandwiches, but nothing new or revelatory. The small order of fries was actually massive, and they came hot and freshly fried with nice crispy bits. I will give them props for having ketchup and salt at the table, which was much needed for the unsalted Portuguese fries that are the norm. While this is a nice, easy lunch spot that offers plenty of outdoor seating in a cute little square, I wouldn't call it a must-try in Porto.

Leah M.

Yelp
I was excited for this place but the food was arguably the worst we've had while visiting in Portugal. It is so cute inside though.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Great casual restaurant to get your classic Porto dishes. They will have the popular entree that are tasty with beer. There should be good seating for small or slightly larger groups.
google avatar

Diane J.

Yelp
Casa Guedes is a restaurant famous for their sande de pernil, or roast pork sandwich. One costs 4.3 euros at the time of writing. The restaurant could be argued to be a tourist trap with multi-levels and multi-buildings, but it's famous for good reason. We also tried caldo verde, a Portuguese soup with potato and kale; papa de sarrabulho, a thick chili-like soup made with pork blood, liver, meat, and cumin; and the traditional francesinha sandwich, which is the Portuguese version of a croque madame that's stacked with various cuts of meat then drenched in cheese and a tomato-beer sauce (ours unfortunately didn't come with a fried egg). It's worth mentioning that the francesinha is incredibly indulgent; our family split it four-ways and felt even a quarter piece was edging the line of a post-lunch food coma.
google avatar

Joanna T.

Yelp
Casa Guedes was our destination to try a famous francheshina sandwich and it did not disappoint. We opted to sit on the lovely terrace and had fast & friendly service. I started with a caldo verde soup which was creamy and wonderful and then had a sliced pork sandwich on a fresh crusty roll (with local cheese). This was a really good sandwich - my pork was moist and simply reasoned. If you like a fancier preparation you can opt for any number of toppings but I like simplicity. The gents both got the Francheshina which again comes in many variants. They stayed with the traditional and received a beautiful hot mess of delicious meats, melted cheese and the famous gravy which is perfect for dipping crispy fries into. Prices are reasonable (under €10) and you will not leave hungry!
google avatar

Gabriel S.

Yelp
Chef Guedes sandwich had crusty bread, tasty & pretty juicy pork & a light sweet touch from the sauce. The cheese went well with it too. Cod cake with soft sheep cheese & Rissol with roasted pork & soft sheep cheese were both good - crispy, light & not greasy. The cheese added a nice edge to the latter. Porto (Tawny) was strong.
google avatar

Romina F.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches at any hour, the smell coming from the street of the food is amazing, try anything with pork!!!
google avatar

Veronica R.

Yelp
Yuck! This was recommend by a tour guide and we couldn't find anything good. Maybe the fries?? I guess if your a local it's good, but steer clear if your a tourist. Tables are way close, you can smell everyone. The waiters are rude and rush you through everything. Nahhhhh!
google avatar

Irene T.

Yelp
Most famous sandwich shop (or even restaurant in general), really good pork sliders and also a good vegetarian sandwich options! Highly recommended by tourists and locals alike. No frills, delicious food. On the corner of the street. Service was ok but they don't speak much English. I loved the 14 Chef Guedes, my favorite thing I tried. Really tasty bread, tender pork, arugula, cheese, caramelized onions. The cabbage soup has chorizo in it though so that is not vegetarian but the soup of the day was vegetarian (forgot to take a pic of the soup of the day oops). They have a restroom on the -1 floor. It's ok.

Robert G.

Yelp
Great food and great staff. Enjoy the rooftop or outdoor seating. Not sure why I have to have 85 characters to post a review so this is just filler.
google avatar

Jim S.

Yelp
We had a standard pork sandwich, pork sandwich with Brie and arugula added, chicken soup, and caldo verde - potato soup with kale. Added their house made piri chili sauce. All were delicious. Tons of outdoor seating.
google avatar

Jason T.

Yelp
I was excited to try their pernil but it kind of fell flat. The sandwich wasn't anything too special. I actually liked their soup more than their sandwich. They came around and asked if we wanted a bacalhau pastry. I decided to try it and it was also not that great. Maybe it was just the sandwich I got but I wouldn't come back again. Service was friendly, so that's a plus
google avatar

Adam C.

Yelp
You must go to downtown Porto to experience the food. Casa Guedes offers these sandwiches with roasted pork and a special cheese between two fresh crunchy buns that have a wow factor. Delicious. Add a beer and it does not get much better. You can also try the fried chicken filled croquets (I am assuming no calories). Just remember calories never count on vacation.
google avatar

Ben Y.

Yelp
No frills, absolutely delicious and juicy pernil sandwich. Must get with the cheese!!! The slightly sweet and melty cheese complements the pork so well. The smoked sausage and pork sandwich was also sublime. Great lunch/afternoon snack.
google avatar

Stef K.

Yelp
So nice - we had to have it twice! The pork was tender, flavorful and juicy. The service was really good- and when we returned for the second time, they remembered us really enjoyed my Sangria B
google avatar

Rupert R.

Yelp
Sande de Pernil all the way. This sandwich of the gods is worth the visit to Porto alone (although you should definitely see more of Porto, the city has much, much more to offer and other great foods & wines). I came here for lunch with a friend and went with the #1 item on their menu which is a roasted pork sandwich. This is a very different animal than a bifana (both still pigs, but you should have a bifana de molho which is a special sauce from Porto sometime during your visit at a different place). The meat is tender and juicy and they throw it on top of a homemade Portuguese bread bun. Simple. Wash it down with a Preta or a Fino depending on how full you want to be and how intense you want the flavor to be. I did a Preta (which is a dark stout beer) with the sandwich and my buddy and I split the chips. Outdoor seating is spacious and the lines can get long. I went around 12:30-1pm and only waited around 5-8 minutes but when we left, the line was double the size. It's worth the wait, you might want to order two sandwiches if you're hungry. They have a standard version and then some variants with cheese and other toppings. The staff is friendly and will bring your food to your table, although they may also call your number out depending on take away or dine-in so keep your ear open and learn some Portuguese numbers. Nearby is a great Francesinha place as well for dinner.

Yelp
4 different waiters came by to take our order, so the experience was a little hectic. We ended up with an extra ham sandwhich we didn't order. the food was ok. Would recommend the croquettes (pork and cheese)! Very crowded after ~8:30pm.

Yelp
For this being our first meal in Porto, I was happy with the food and the service. I ordered the picaña with fries, white rice, and egg & bacon casserole mixture. The picaña was cooked well and tender throughout. It didn't have any marinade on the meat, but it did have a little salt and rosemary garnish which added some flavor. The fries were literally fresh cut potatoes made into French fries and were absolutely delicious. The white rice was just blah for me. The casserole combination was really tasty, but it is a chalky type taste with egg and little bacon pieces scrambled in. I ordered the Hostel for a beverage which was vodka, limao, maracuyá, with pink pepper garnish and it was absolutely amazing! Definitely a nice place that'll I probably try again before leaving! Giving this an extra star because it stays open late!
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
We got the #1 pernil (roasted pork) and traditional Francesinha. Both were great and the service was excellent (we got it to-go though). I would recommend coming here.
google avatar

Teresa N.

Yelp
Excellent pork sandwich place recommended by the hotel guy. The bread was super soft with a light crunch on the outside, super fresh. Pork was very juicy and flavorful, I added brie to my sandwich and I was glad I did it it went very well with my sandwich. Can't wait to go back to Porto for all the yummy food!

Yelp
A little shop selling good quality pork sandwich! * * * EXPERIENCE * * * We went on a Thursday at 10:30am which the place just opened, there was barely any customer although I heard this place is pretty famous. Traditional interior decoration with both indoor and outdoor seatings. Don't forget to order a beer to compliment the pork sandwich! * * * FOOD * * * Pork Sandwich: A- It's pulled pork style and the amount of meat was generous. The meat would be almost too salty to eat on its own without the bun, which I think was the star of this dish with very soft and almost juicy texture. The harmony of the combination was a joy. Definitely a good place to try out pork sandwich if you have not had a chance to do so yet. I also recommend outdoor seating as you can do a bit of people watching too!
