Isla Holbox, Mexico, Travel Guide

"Bohemian-chic rooms that lean into understated luxury with local art and decor, an impressive spa and wellness menu that draws day visitors, plus a seaside restaurant and a Japanese bar. The hotel's garden-set spot Luuma is highlighted as "one of Holbox's best spots for small bites and sunset cocktails," making it a popular choice for evening drinks and light plates." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. Casa Las Tortugas Hotel Review | Hotels Above Par

"A barefoot-luxury boutique hotel on Isla Holbox that rewards the somewhat adventurous arrival (about two hours by car from Cancún, a 20-minute ferry and final ATV transfer on a car-free island) with a serene, organic-minimalist retreat. The property centers on a tranquil main pool and private beachfront with a soft sandbar and coveted lounge cushions; rooms are whitewashed with neutral palettes, local textiles, macramé wall hangings, woven pendant lamps and raw cement floors, and are playfully labeled with Spanish words rather than numbers. Bath products are locally sourced and lightly honey-scented, and small touches like the owner’s ofrenda to Frida Kahlo, a petite yoga area, a one-room spa and the daily scent of burning copal blanco encourage guests to slow down. The stay is oriented toward unplugging—there are no mini-fridges, TVs or strong Wi‑Fi—and includes an ample breakfast (fresh-squeezed or green juice, pastry, French-press coffee or tea, fruit and yogurt and mains such as huitlacoche omelette, avocado toast and chilaquiles) plus morning yoga. On-site staff help arrange seasonal experiences like whale-shark excursions (May–September), bioluminescent night trips and year‑round kitesurfing. With 21 rooms, a laid-back bohemian vibe and multiple dining options on the grounds, the four-star property aims for relaxed, unpretentious luxury; rates start around $330 per night."

We really enjoyed our five nights here. The location is spot on—close to the market center with everything within a short walk, yet still quiet enough to feel like a proper getaway. Since it’s the last hotel on the beach, the stretch of sand feels almost private and never crowded. The water is shallow, warm, and gorgeous, and there were always enough sun beds, which made the mornings pleasantly stress-free.||Breakfast was another big plus. It was generous, tasty, and their house breads were honestly so good. The whole property is kept clean and well maintained, and the staff were friendly and consistently helpful. Service at the beach bar and restaurant was great throughout our stay.||A couple things in the room could be better. The big glass windows don’t have sheer curtains, and because they face other rooms, it felt like we had zero privacy unless the main curtains were fully closed. The bathroom is spacious, but the lighting is too dim—especially in the evening. Getting ready or doing makeup was a bit of a challenge.||Overall, it’s a lovely place with an amazing beach and great service. With a few tweaks to the rooms, it would be close to perfect.

My husband and I came here for a weekend just to get some R&R. I was so pleasantly surprised by the beauty and comfort of this cute and quaint boutique hotel. We're used to resorts, so we didn't know what to expect. I'll tell you that it exceeded our expectations tenfold. From the minute we walked in and were served this delicious juice. The staff at the hotel are so wonderful. Sebastian who runs the restaurant took care of all our dietary needs with extreme patience. Special shoutout to Noel and Allesia who also helped make our stay there special. the rooms are so spacious and clean. We will definitely be back! soon, I hope.

Third time here, and our last. The nickel and dime-ing is embarrassing. For example we needed to stay an extra night because our family got sick. I asked them if they could offer us a price at the same room as our previous room (100 dollar difference). We’d spent THOUSANDS of dollars at this point just on this trip and they only were willing to give us 60 dollars off. This is our third time here and we literally eloped here! They couldn’t give us a mere 40 dollars off more? The principle of it hurt my heart! The point is that if they can charge you, they will. And it’s gross. Also while I’m complaining… drinks are not great! And they used to be! So sour and expensive. Might as well go down to nomade and get really good drinks for the same price. The menu is weird. Who wants pasta on the beach? Not I. The burger is great but only served from 12-6. Breakfast is consistently good. I’m sad about this because I used to love this place but the service this time left such a bad taste in my mouth- I’ll be staying somewhere else next time. Finally two things… 1. get some full length mirrors in the rooms y’all. I can’t be the only one who wants to see what my full fit looks like. 2. Get a database where you know if customers have stayed before and if we’re celebrating something. I had to remind them like three times it was our anni and we got married in the hotel. They gave us two mimosas. Lol. Bye

We just stayed Nov. 11-14 and had such an amazing time. The property is very well kept and we thought it was also a great location. It is very nice that there is a taxi stand right across from the entrance if you don't care to walk or if there has been recent rain the the streets have water in them. The breakfast that come included with your stay every morning is amazing. Definitely do not miss out on that!

We recently stayed at Casa Las Tortugas for a week as the second part of our honeymoon and we honestly could not fault it. The hotel itself is beautiful: a gorgeous design fitting to the island surroundings both in the rooms and rest of hotel, a beach you never want to leave, a beautiful pool. The restaurants and amenities were fab. Breakfast was the nicest start to each day with freshly squeezed juice, fruits and a ‘hot’ option. Really great value and a nice touch. The free activities were lovely, with a soundbath experience, film showing and yoga while we were there, and although we didnt attend them all, it was nice to have the option. The location we found to be perfect, so close to the town which we explored most evenings, but it felt like a completely tranquil space. The beach was cleaned and maintained so well - we walked along and it was by far one of the nicest spots we saw. We barely used the pool which is unlike us! Ive seen bad reviews from non guests on here, but as guests we personally appreciated people being moved along who had tried to pitch up with towels on what I presume is a private beach, and use the shade from the hotel’s parasols. The staff were always very polite about it. One of the key selling points for the hotel were the staff. They honestly could not have been nicer. Every single person from reception staff, waiting staff, the hostesses, cleaners etc were absolutely lovely and could not do enough for you the entire time. It made it hard to leave on our last day, we just had the best time. The hotel bar and restaurants had good options but a tad pricier than the local bars/restaurants. We really didnt mind paying the prices for such lovely surroundings and service, though, and actually chose to eat at their restaurants 2 nights out of 7 which we would never ordinarily do. I honestly think this is the best hotel on Holbox (after doing a lot of research to make sure our honeymoon was special) and we really hope to be able to return some day!

The hotel looks stylish on the photos but unfortunately we were disappointed overall with our experience at Casa las Tortugas. Plus: Location and beach area. Unfortunately, when we arrived the beach area was closed as it was too windy, but there was nowhere else to sit and relax around the hotel other than our rooms or sit in the restaurant. There were only five pool lounge chairs which were always taken. Service needs to be more consistent in the restaurant.

AMAZING experience in Holbox and at Casa Las Tortugas Karol, Danny, Alicia (from Venice) - just added to my experience. The staff during breakfast and on the beach were so wonderful to chat with - and loved hearing about their experiences! I went for a relaxing solo vacation - and this trip did just that! I left with a calm mind and open heart! Thank you again Kathleen

Pure magic — warmth, care, and community. From the moment we arrived at Casa de las Tortugas, we felt like we’d been transported to another world — a different place, a different time. It’s hard to describe… you just have to experience it for yourself. The staff made us feel like family — warm, attentive, and genuinely caring. The property is small, charming, and perfectly located, with bright, cheerful rooms and thoughtful touches everywhere. The spa experience was next level — a warm bath with petals and candles before my massage, followed by a steam. The therapists were incredible, and I left completely renewed. Delicious food, beautiful morning yoga, and an overall sense of peace and connection made this stay unforgettable. Tulum can feel busy, but Casa de las Tortugas is a sanctuary — authentic, soulful, and full of heart. We left feeling cared for, recharged, and already planning our return

Yelp
I visited this hotel in October of 2021 with my husband for 4 days and it was absolutely amazing. If you're looking for a place to disconnect from the world this is it. the island itself is laid back and beautiful. It feels like time stands still and you're in this never ending relaxation mode. Our reservations included breakfast and it did not disappoint. The food at the hotel is pricey but very good. We would take our breakfast fruit platter to the beach beds and relax at the beach all day. There are tons of street vendors on the beach a have cash ready because they have fresh coconuts and empanadas to sandwiches and other snacks. If you buy a coconut and drink the coconut water you can ask for the vendor to crack is open and take out the fresh coconut meat for free.

Yelp
Casa Las Tortugas was a beautiful and comfortable home away from home on Isla Holbox. I booked a suite, which was one of their smaller room offerings. It was beautiful, with white walls and linens and natural wood accents. We had a cute patio out front with a partial view of the ocean; a perfect spot for reading or having a drink at night. Though it was cooler than expected for the beginning of our stay, we were able to comfortably keep the windows open. It was an absolute dream to fall asleep to the ocean! Covid precautions were taken very seriously; everyone on staff was masked up at all times and guests were compliant as well. Our room was spotless and the entire property was constantly being cleaned. The beachfront is the star at Casa Las Tortugas. It's quite expansive and there are loads of chairs, loungers, and some very cool lounge swings which my husband and I were happy to occupy every afternoon. Though I'm not typically a pool person when I have the ocean nearby, the pool area was a nice, warm place to lounge on those first couple of days when it was a bit breezier on the beach. Breakfast is included and we were treated to an epic feast every morning at Mandarina restaurant, including coffee, fresh juice of the day, toast, fruit, yogurt and granola and a choice of breakfast entree. I'll elaborate more on that in my review of Mandarina, but take my word that it was a perfect start to each day. Everyone on staff was lovely, from the front desk to the servers and the housekeepers. Blanca, the hotel cat, was a fun addition as well. Casa Las Tortugas is perfectly located on the edge of town, providing easy access to all of the town's restaurants and shopping while also being right on the beach, making for nice walking options in either direction. If we return to Holbox in the future, we'd be hard-pressed to stay elsewhere!

Yelp
If your looking for a hotel that will bring you peace and full relaxation, this is it! The rooms are oceanfront, very clean and it just feels like an oasis. What I loved the most is their restraunt. Literally the best versatile restaurant in the island. All the employees are absolutely fantastic and welcoming. I'm looking forward to coming back.
