9 of the best cooking classes around the world - SilverKris

"Regarded as one of Bali’s top cooking schools, classes in Ubud teach participants how to prepare traditional Balinese dishes while also explaining the cultural significance of the cuisine and its abundant use of local herbs and spices. Sessions typically end with a lavish meal made by the students, enjoyed alongside local rice wine or homemade hibiscus tea to complete the cultural and culinary immersion." - SilverKris

We were a group of 13 people in Friday class. There was no market visit but the class started with an introduction of local ingredients which are crucial for balinese cuisine. Our instructor Yuk De made an extra stand up show before cooking which gave us pleasent moment. Yuk De and her team was very friendly and helpful. Anyone can participate with a little cooking skills. We had a delicious lunch with the group and at least now we know how to prepare Nasi & Mi Goreng or how they are prepared. Thanks a lot.

Monday Focus on Fish Cooking Class. What I liked about the class was its central location in Ubud amidst a beautifully landscaped guesthouse compound. It’s pleasant to learn how to cook in such a charming environment. We had a small group (which was rare in recent history for them) and started out with hisbiscus tea and coffee. We had a very happy and enthusiastic instructor who was also keen to share stories about Balinese customs and herself. After they explained and demoed the ingredients we could all try our hand at chopping etc. My preferred dish turned out to be the Kangkong.

I was a bit skeptical after seeing on arrival that the cooking school was owned and run by an Australian with no historical ties to Bali. I was gladly proven wrong in that notion. We did the market visit and class and enjoyed it thoroughly. Best meal we had in Ubud (including Aperitif and Syrco BASE). But it’s not a cooking class. It’s more of a demonstration. The market visit was conducted by a sweet, positive, hilarious local man who patiently and proudly took us through all things Bali in terms of ingredients and market (with time to shop). The class was run by an ubud native who has been with the school for 21 years and did a great job with her team. We all chopped, a couple of people stirred a bit, and one or two made quenelles to be fried. So don’t come if you are expecting technique or details on how to cook. You do get a good demonstration of specific dishes and flavour combinations. The end result was outstanding so it’s a good meal regardless and the hotel / space in which you work is truly lovely.

My boyfriend and I had a great time at the cooking class. The kitchen was set in a beautiful calming atmosphere, the food was all fresh and very delicious. So generous with food and drinks. But the highlight was the staff - Oleg, Made and Jero - they were so sweet and funny, and told us lots of useful information about the ingredients and cooking techniques used. The booklet you get to take home with information/recipes from the class is a very nice touch. Would definitely recommend Casa Luna, they're the BEST cooking school in Bali!

I had an absolutely fantastic time at this cooking class... looking at how to cook Balinese ceremonial food (Wednesday's class). I booked and paid online via their website using PayPal. Each day of the week has a different class. Some include a trip to the local market to select produce. Today's was all done at Honeymoon, and there were ten of us altogether - a mix of travellers from England, Australia, Spain France and Hong Kong. The chef was brilliant at telling us more about how food fits in with traditional Balinese life, and also what to substitute Balinese ingredients with in our own countries. The start of the lesson was going through each ingredient, holding and smelling them and understanding more about what they add to the dish (all the dishes are based around a balance of sweet, sour, salty and spicy) We were provided with a recipe booklet so we could go home and cook the same dishes we made. There were 8 different items made. We all took part in chopping and preparing ingredients, and volunteers were asked to help with frying some of the ingredients. The rest of the cooking was completed by the professional cooks, so we could watch and see how the cooking was done. Photos and videos were encouraged throughout and they offered to take photos of me taking part as I'm a solo traveller 😉 At the end we all sat down at a long table and aye our wonderful food, and I'm inspired to try cooking these meals back at home. This was a brilliant course and I'd highly recommend it.

We loved this cooking class! Each day has a different menu and we did Tuesday’s, which was very vegan friendly. Started the day with a tour of the local market. Learned a lot about the raw ingredients there. Enjoyed learning traditional Balinese cooking techniques. Loved everything we made, the flavors were incredible!! Got a recipe booklet to take home too.

Short Review: We were very excited to do a cooking class, but ultimately their Thursday class with the market tour was extremely slow (actual cooking done in about an hour), staff barely spoke English, and the dishes we made were just ok. Also it felt expensive for what it was and we are surprised so many people left good reviews. Overview of class: We did the Thursday Market Tour + Cooking class. - meet at Casa luna restaurant 8am - walk to a pretty unappealing nearby market where during the walk they tell you markets are all closing! At the markets we crowded around a few stalls as vendors were trying to pack up to listen to an associate tell awkward jokes and explain ingredients pretty superficially (ingredients have all already been purchased for you) - walk back to casa lunas cooking school and take a 45 min to 1 hour break (felt like a huge waste of time) - around 10, the head chef starts explaining the ingredients to you again although at least this is in the kitchen with the ingredients Infront of you. Her English was also somewhat limited and she tended to ramble or tell stories about random things perhaps to fill the time(?) - About 10.15/10.30 cooking and prep finally starts! you cut up some ingredients (onion, garlic, peppers), grind them manually with a mortar and pestle, then watch the lead cook make them for you with an occasional volunteer doing some light stirring - around 11.45 lunch was served and you are free to eat then leave
