Why This Region Nicknamed “the California of Europe” Should Be on Your Must-Visit List | Vogue

"Located in the historic coastal town of Lagos, this restored 19th-century estate offers a sunny, beachside stay steeped in sustainability, sun, and creativity. The 33 accommodations, which include five suites, are five-star from top to bottom and almost entirely locally sourced: more than 90% of everything you see and touch is handmade in Portugal exclusively for the property, and the attention to detail extends to the restaurant, where most of the ingredients come from the hotel’s gardens." - Christina Pérez, Lindsay Lambert Day

Casa Mãe Lagos (Lagos, Algarve) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Once a crumbling estate by the sea, Casa Mãe was revived by a design-minded newcomer who made Lagos her home. Set just inside the city’s 16th-century walls, the hotel bridges eras and aesthetics - its 34 rooms span a whitewashed 19th-century house, concrete cabanas, and pared-back garden suites. Terracotta tiles, handwoven textiles, and custom ceramics speak to local tradition. With orchard paths, a vegetable garden and salt air drifting in from the coast, Casa Mãe offers a slower version of southern Portugal." - Tablet Hotels

Casa Mãe is a beautifully renovated, historic property in an ideal location. The Hotel staff was incredibly helpful by email prior to our arrival. We were greeted warmly with a delicious beverage and our room is luxurious. The bed and linens are wonderful. We had dinner at the restaurant last night and the drinks, food and service were outstanding. this is a wonderful place to stay!

My mother and I splurged on 4 nights in a cabana to celebrate my birthday in Lagos. We loved most amenities like the pool, private patio, and morning yoga/pilates class. Great eco vibe with garden on the peaceful quiet grounds, large room with thoughtful touches and indoor plants, and 10 min walk to city center or 10 min ride to beach. Kudos to the grill master for perfectly grilled steak on bbq night! The rooms are designed more so for couples in that the tub is out in the open and shower has glass, so lacks privacy but great for a romantic getaway if that’s your purpose. The downsides: too expensive for the service that you would expect from 5 star hotel. the reception staff seem young, bothered and don’t greet (with exception of one friendly/helpful female). Janky details like our front door knob was broken and shower doors don’t shut all the way plus ants crawling on the bed. Also this is definitely a great option for a special occasion but curious why the reason is requested on ALL platforms if they don’t acknowledge it. Our next hotel was half the price and I received a cute display with handwritten birthday card upon arrival. Otherwise, we loved our stay but I would stay elsewhere due to price if it were not a special occasion. Still gotta give credit —5 stars overall!

An outstanding restaurant. We booked Christmas Day lunch and were delighted. We've lived near Lagos for five years and this was the finest meal that we've eaten here. The bread basket blew us away. The best olive oil that I've ever tried and mutiple, interesting types of bread and butter. The wine and cocktails were outstanding. Each course was excellent. Our host (Ricardo?) was wonderful and guided us through each decision with kindness and enthusiasm. The grounds are wonderful. Casa Mae made our Christmas day special and memorable.

Our Travel Agent booked the 3 Cabanas at Casa Mae for us and the two other couples we were traveling with this past September. The resort is very nice, but we had a poor experience. We were assigned the 1st of the 3 Cabanas, and the staff member who took us to the Cabanas, showed us all the 1st Cabana which was along the walkway to the pool and restaurant, and told us that all three Cabanas were the same. This was not true. The 2nd and 3rd Cabanas had lovely private outdoor living spaces. Our Cabana outdoor space was not private and had sparse outdoor furniture. When we asked the Resort Manager to provide us accommodations on par with our traveling companions or a partial refund, she, to her credit suggested we all move to the 3 Bedroom Casa Mae Villa. The Villa was lovely, and we agreed to make the move. |Unfortunately, we were in the 3rd Floor Bedroom of the Villa, and we discovered when we went to bed that evening, that the air conditioning was not working and the temperature in the bedroom had risen to 25.5C / 79F, which made sleeping very difficult and uncomfortable. When reporting the air conditioning issue to the Manager, she shared with us that this was a known problem with the 3rd Floor Bedroom and that the Technician who could fix it, was not available for our stay. She provided us two fans which were delivered to the bottom floor of the Villa and we had to carry them up two flight of stairs to our bedroom. The fans did not help much and we had another night of little and uncomfortable sleeping.||We asked the Owner of Casa Mae for a partial refund and that she could work with our travel agent to determine an appropriate amount. She declined multiple requests stating that the Villa was an upgrade over the Cabanas and the air conditioning issue was out of her control. Clearly she did not care that we had a miserable experience.||So if you decide to book a Cabana at Casa Mae, insist on the 2nd or 3rd Cabana. If you book the Villa, make sure the air conditioning is working. If you do, I expect you will have a more enjoyable stay than we did.

Idyllic experience! The hotel is located in a tipsy turvy location which took some careful driving to reach. But once there, everything was taken care of in the best ways. The rooms are modern and yet cozy, with a great coastal vibe. The entire property is lovely … there’s even a small farm that’s used for various products. The restaurant is fantastic. We ventured out once for dinner but it didn’t match the quality and choices of the hotel’s restaurant. The service here is excellent. Too many to name but cherise and Candela were always on hand for delicious food. I think the spa was definitely one of our highlights of our entire stay. Ana for a facial and Cynthia for all kinds of massages and body treatments. Wow. They are so skilled and take great care for an incredible experience. Honestly can’t say enough good things about them. The location is perfect. We walked to beaches and strolled around city center. The car was safely parked just on the other side of the wall. I highly recommend this beautiful hotel!

Fantastic stay at Casa Mãe. My partner and I stayed in the main building, and throughly enjoyed walking the grounds, relaxing by the pool, and brilliant recommendations by front of house staff. The main building rooms are cozy, and the shower is see-through so if sharing the room make sure you’re comfortable with your other guest! The restaurant staff, food & drinks were top notch as well. The included breakfast was especially tasty each morning. We will be returning to Casa Mãe our next trip to Algarve!

I cannot put into words how beautiful this boutique hotel is. My husband and I booked one of the cabanas for our honeymoon and it was the best decision we made during our travels in Portugal. From the moment you step in, you’re greeted with stunning decor, smiles from the staff, and a welcome glass of wine or other drink of your choosing. The staff let us store our bags, gave us many recommendations of things to do, and allowed us to enjoy the facilities as we waited to check-in. Our room was incredible, private, and very close to the pool. Every little detail, like the champagne, lavender bath salts, robes and slippers, and pastel de natas were an absolute treat! The pool is absolutely beautiful with many chairs and a pool side bar with delicious food. Our favorite part of our stay was the breakfast and BBQ. Every single bite we had here, we loved! My mouth is still watering. The farm to table concept is magnificent. The serving staff were always kind, polite, and accommodating. The dinner we had for their BBQ party was our favorite meal of the entire trip- I will always be dreaming of the sea bass. Lastly, the entire property almost feels like your own! It was so quiet, peaceful, and relaxing. It was also very walkable to the marina and bars/restaurants. HIGHLY recommend staying here! Book it, it’s worth it!

In October this place was fairly pricey. We expected something special. It was quite trendy, sort of a south beach vibe. The breakfast was nice and plentiful, coffees were good. otherwise we only had a cocktail at the bar, which was nicely done but there isn't much nighttime activity here. Most people seem to take a small walk to a restaurant. Concierge was helpful with suggestions for around Lagos. The room was pretty spacious. We had a balcony facing the street which wasn't great. I'd request one inward facing. Pools were cold but refreshing and nice to relax at after a day of hiking. they don't get a lot of late day sun tho.|the bath products were all mixed up in our room, wrong products in the wrong containers i'm pretty sure, or else the shampoo was just odd. The spouts also don't work well. Small thing but annoying when you get body lotion all over.
