This was for an impromptu UYE organized by Jeannie T. Without her or Lina Michelle V., I never would have known this place was here. This is as far out in Queens as you can get because Nassau County starts just across the street. Both the Q36 & N24 buses stop here. We were lucky and scored a parking space in front (metered NYC parking 9am-7pm M-Sa or use the app). We were early for our 7pm reservation and walked in through the bar side. It was a slow Tuesday night, so when we were brought into the dining room, there were plenty of open tables. The decor may be simple, but the Colombian food they serve is fantastic! JJ was our server and he was great, getting our drinks and food out quickly.
After everybody's arrival, we started with Guacamole and Chips which were pretty plain, but good. We also had the Arepitas de Chocolo con Carne with shredded beef & pico de gallo topping the mini corn cakes, which I liked. When the entrées came, 3 people ordered the Bandeja Tipica. It looked really good with a Carne Asada grilled steak, a long chunk of Chicharron, fried up all crispy, a pile of rice topped with a fried egg with a bowl of soupy pinto beans. That was a pretty substantial dinner. For the 2 of us, we had the Parrillada, a mixed grill platter with grilled sirloin steak, pork loin, a pounded chicken breast, a split sausage, a 1/2 dozen shrimp surrounded by cassava fries, plantains and potatoes. I felt the meat could have used some more seasoning or maybe a sauce. Oh, and it also came with a side plate of rice and beans. If you're BIG eater, this is for you. The 2 of us couldn't finish it and we brought the rest home. Needless to say, we didn't get dessert, but we did stay for a while catching up with all that's been going on in our lives and families. The staff were nice enough not to hurry us out.
So a funny thing happened while using the Gender Neutral Rest Rooms (I can now safely answer "Yes" to that Check-in question). After doing my business and washing my hands, I go to the Hi-Speed electric hand drier. It's mounted in a bad place, right above the toilet paper roll. They added a shield so you don't drip water on the paper, but it's too small for that function. It's also too small to block the hurricane force motor blowing 70mph winds onto it, causing it to spin out paper all over the floor. It was pretty comical. There I was with wet hands in the middle of a typhoon, trying to stop the paper from completely unrolling with my knees and trying not to get the roll wet at the same time. It was a Laurel and Hardy sketch all the way (if any of you young'uns even know who Laurel and Hardy are). I cleaned up the mess, washed my hands (again) and made sure not to repeat my mistake or it would have been another Groundhog Day. This is probably the longest part of a review I've ever done for a restaurant rest room. LOL
